Marlins Activate Dylan Floro

By Darragh McDonald | May 9, 2022 at 8:30pm CDT

The Marlins announced that they have activated right-handed pitcher Dylan Floro from the injured list. Infielder Joe Dunand was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.

Floro has missed the entirety of the season so far, having been shelved during Spring Training with some arm soreness. This was later diagnosed as right rotator cuff tendinitis, which landed Floro on the injured list as the season began in April. Acquired from the Dodgers prior to the 2021 season, Floro somewhat quietly had an excellent campaign in Miami last year. In 64 innings out of the bullpen, his ERA was 2.81, along with a 23% strikeout rate, 9.3% walk rate and 49.2% ground ball rate. He notched 15 saves and 11 holds as a key piece of the team’s bullpen.

Without Floro in the mix, the club has turned to Anthony Bender as its primary closer this year. Although he’s notched six saves, he’s also blown a pair, putting up an ERA of 4.91 so far in the young season. His 28.7% strikeout rate from last year has dipped to 21.7% so far this year, though this is a small sample of just 11 innings. Regardless of how the roles shake out, if Floro is able to replicate his success from last year, he should be a boon to the team’s relief corps. As a whole, the Miami bullpen has a 3.05 ERA, placing them 7th in the league.

I guess Joe Dunand was hitting too well to stay on the roster.

As for Floro, well he’s healthy now so he can come in and join his bullpen teammates in blowing late-inning leads too.

Can Floro catch up in the blown-lead competition between the Marlins relievers? It’s going to be tough, especially if the Marlins try to stick Bass in the set-up or Closer spots here in there. Bass is the favorite., but Floro has the potential to give him a run for it. Maybe after tonight, the Marlins move Hernandez to the bullpen, which may bring a serious contender for the most blown leads.

Watching a bullpen blow lead after lead after lead for what is now over a year will do that to any fan…especially when your front office fails to bring in a legit Closer, which was a blatantly known need. Instead we sign two corner OFs when we only needed one, and we don’t bring in a legit Closer, even though we need one desperately.

I’d love to attend, but we both know that I’ll be there while you won’t because you’ve clearly never watched a Marlins game in your life from your mom’s troll hole.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the blown leads and failure to get a proven closer.
This situation is not just about the bullpen. They have about the 5th best ERA in MLB. It is also one of the most pressured.
This is also about the repeated failure to add on against the minor members of opposing teams’ bullpens. The biggest failure is offense. How often am I sitting watching games where the second best starting pitcher on view (the opposing one) is leaving the game with a 1 run lead?
The missing ingredient on the Marlins is offense. Mediocre, league average offense would propel the Marlins up the standings

A fair point about the offense. However, despite the Marlins offensive woes, they have been handing leads to their bullpen. The Marlins need to fix that bullpen before looking at the offense. With legit Closer, we’re above .500 last year and this year.

How are the Marlins faring against the World Champion Braves? 2-1 up. Long way to go, but so far so good.

Marlins look All-World against the NL East teams. They’ve unfortunately been a doormat for the other divisions. And the minute our SP is out of the game, the opposing hitters are licking their chops knowing that they’ll hit this bullpen in the last two innings…at least the SPs that are not named Elieser Hernandez. He should be moved to the bullpen since he fits right in with throwing BP to opposing hitters.

1 of many the Marlins should have traded and waited too long on. I thought for sure Hernandez was getting moved this offseason for bullpen help.

One of the things that stands out during Kim Ng’s time with the Marlins is this failure to have a dependable bullpen that can hold leads. She has yet to step up and target a Closer. It’s just been a bunch of MRs and a couple of SUs, but not one guy that can close out a game.

Today, we got lucky that our offense put up 8 in the top of the 9th to regain the lead after another lead blown in the bottom of the 8th.

Bro…we actually did blow that lead roflmao. I had said, “we’re going to lose this game,” after Sandy didnt come out for the 8th, and I knocked out in that inning from not having had enough rest, and just checked the score after seeing you said that….amazing

Yeah, sadly our bullpen has become automatic at blowing leads. That’s why when I saw it happen again to open the season, I posted that we were already done this year.

Until Ng fixes this bullpen and gets us a legit Closer, we won’t go anywhere. Can’t go anywhere when you have a bullpen that routinely snatches defeat out of the jaws of victory.
