Mets’ Sean Reid-Foley To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

By Sean Bavazzano | May 10, 2022 at 6:43pm CDT

Mets GM Billy Eppler announced that right-hander Sean Reid-Foley will undergo Tommy John surgery tomorrow, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. The 26-year-old was transferred to the 60-day IL just a few days ago, so no further transactions are imminent for the Mets at this time. Given the timing of the surgery, it seems likely that Reid-Foley won’t be able to resume  full baseball activities until late spring or summer of next year.

Acquired in a swap with Toronto in January of last year, Reid-Foley has shifted almost exclusively to relief work for the Mets. The results have been mixed, as the right-hander saw his strikeout and walk rates reach career-best levels last season. That progress has reversed through 10 innings so far this season, however, thanks in part to the return of control issues that plagued him even as a touted prospect in the Blue Jays’ farm system. All told, Reid-Foley owns a 5.28 ERA in two seasons (30 plus innings) out of the Mets bullpen.

With less than two years of service time entering the season, Reid-Foley is a ways away from qualifying for the arbitration process. Given his general ineffectiveness and injury woes with the Mets so far, however, it’s possible that the pitcher will find himself with a different team this offseason when a 40-man roster spot is required again. Additionally, the current front office leader, Billy Eppler, was not aboard when the team acquired the right-hander in the first place, which could work against the pitcher’s chance at holding down a roster spot despite his pedigree.

Another reliever to find, not that Foley was anything great to replace but we don’t exactly have the best of pens either.

Diaz has been phenomenal, but outside of that, I do see this pen struggling down the stretch unless they make some additions.

Agreed. Diaz and Drew Smith have been on another level so far this year. The rest of the pen doesn’t have much staying power though. They’ll need reinforcements but I fear there will be stiff competition for bullpen help and I would hate to see them give away another top prospect after shipping off Ginn for Bassett.

Drew Smith isn’t good hes just been lucky, he will have a 5 era by seasons end unless he gets hurt. Givesnup a walk or a hit in every appearance and then someone makes a spectacular play to save him a run. They hit bullets off him

He’s allowed 9 baserunners in 12.1 IP for a 0.73 WHIP, his BAA is .098, he’s got 16 K’s good for 11.7 K/9, has an ERA of 0.00 and a FIP of 1.70. I’m not sure what else you would like him to do, he’s been a stud.

Too bad they had millions tied up in Cano–could have added a couple relievers, instead.

You are correct, sir. In addition, many detractors forget from that trade that the Mets offloaded the salaries of Jay Bruce ($28 million) and Anthony Swarzak ($8.5 million) from the books, plus they received $20 million in cash from the Mariners. As such, the Mets are effectively paying Cano $12.7 million per year through 2023 (though he’s a $20 million line item on their payroll each year).

It is OK, because contracts in the MLB are guaranteed and are given based on past performance. When you realize the player’s future performance will not meet the value of the contract, you do what you can to trade it for prospects, if possible. That often involves adding sweeteners and/or paying the contract down. In the Mets/Mariners deal, the sweetener was Sugar Diaz. The Mets tossed in a couple bad contracts of their own to lessen the blow of assuming most of Canó’s contract. I believe there was a way to get the Mariners to assume more of his contract, but they wanted Jeff McNeil instead of Gerson Bautista. It’s a good thing they didn’t go in that direction.
It’d’ve been great if Canó accepted an assignment to Syracuse and acted as a player-coach there, but it was obvious that wasn’t going to happen. So, the Mets released him. They gladly would’ve paid him to remain in the minors since they have to pay him anyway. If he hooks up somewhere else, the Mets will get a small amount back based on the prorated minimum, but the value of Diaz’s current play makes it worth it.

Agreed, perspective is key so I guess I can say most competitive teams have sunken costs here n there. Still sux. I’m sure the Bauer situation sucked for the Dodgers as well so all is fair.

Let’s see how creative the Mets get, thats what ultimately sets the good teams apart from the average/bad teams.

I don’t understand why pitchers sign with the Mets. They break all of their pitchers. Every single year.

I mean, just an hour ago they moved Degrom to the 60 day IL. He’s basically out for the year now.

DeGrom’s 60 days started from when he went on the 10 day on April 7th. 60 days would take him to June 6th. He is eligible to come off on the 7th. He is at 60 feet throwing, unless he has a setback, he should be back in late June just as @DaOldDerbyBastard said. Still should have 3. months left.

metzfan Not to knowledgeable are you? All pitchers have injuries, The uniform doesn’t cause them and 60 day IL from March isn’t Sept. It’s June. It was a bookeeping, 40 man roster move. Try harder.

Cohen’s Wallet: Do you all have the personnel to get either Montas or Castillo? Perhaps Mahle? I’d think Mahle wouldn’t be prohibitively expensive & would be a decent addition to your staff while DeGrom heals up. Reds are in the tank so I don’t know why they wouldn’t want to reinforce their farm.

When DeGrom returns that staff is going to be insane. Peterson, McGill, & Carrasco are throwing really well. I’m most surprised at Carrasco’s performance. What a nice pickup.

You can’t sign everyone in the offseason – they Mets will have the opportunity to add at the deadline should they continue to play well. We at the Marlins Front Office will certainly be competing for similar bullpen services, as will a lot of other teams with the expanded playoffs. We’ll be selling raffle tickets at the stadium to raise funds to add a closer.

Yeah, man, I appreciate it. I think the umpires are getting way too involved, way too often. Intentional or not (I don’t see why it would be as it was tied score), the umpires should be giving a warning, at most. If it’s unintentional, it is what it is. These umps are impacting games in ways they shouldn’t.

As far as the roster, yeah, really happy with what we see so far. But the Jays scare me, man. You’ve got a few who have yet to get going, and once they do, that lineup is even more brutal to get through. Jays are a team that could easily be 10 games back after the All-Star break and still finish first in the division.

Curious to see the trade deadline movement too.

Garcia bit of a headcase he argued quite hard last summer when he was pulled. Hope our pen isnt as bad as last year. The ump made poor calls too wish their was electronic strikezone more and more. Like how Stanton is homering the other way and ur SS from Min playing pretty good. Ur pen is solid. Story signing been brutal for the bosox.

Yes, no doubt on all. In think the ‘pen is probably the area that the Jays would say is their only “need” at this point. Alek Manoa is a beast on the mound, and Vlad’s 3-home run game, after having his hand sliced open was awesome!

And the FO obviously saw something in Gaus that he would continue success because he’s masterful with that splitter….
