9:30pm: While the team announced Stanton’s injury as a calf strain, Boone told reporters tonight that the former NL MVP is actually dealing with ankle inflammation (via Lindsey Adler of the Athletic). The hope is that Stanton can return after a minimal IL stay.
5:47pm: The Yankees announced a series of moves before tonight’s matchup with the Orioles. Most notably, designated hitter/right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is headed to the 10-day injured list because of a right calf strain. New York also placed reliever Jonathan Loáisiga on the 15-day IL and designated catcher Rob Brantly for assignment. In corresponding moves, the Yankees welcomed Joey Gallo back from the COVID-19 injured list. They also recalled relievers JP Sears and David McKay from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Stanton has been one of the best hitters for the AL-leading Yankees. He’s mashing at a .285/.339/.523 clip, and his 11 home runs tie him for fifth in MLB. The big slugger has a personal-low 8.3% walk rate, but he’s doing more than enough damage on contact to offset the corresponding drop in his on-base percentage. Stanton has been an instrumental piece of a lineup that has been among the league’s best. Aaron Judge is playing at an MVP-type pace through the season’s first month and a half, with Stanton and Anthony Rizzo also offering middle-of-the-order caliber production.
Unfortunately, Stanton is also no stranger to the injured list. He’s landed on the IL because of leg issues in each of the past four years. Stanton missed a significant chunk of the 2019 campaign because of a right knee sprain, then lost more than half of the shortened 2020 season with a left hamstring strain. The 32-year-old had a more minor IL stint due to a left quad strain last year, and he’ll obviously miss some time with his current malady. A timetable remains unclear, but manager Aaron Boone informed reporters last night (via Joel Sherman of the New York Post) that he was headed for an MRI after leaving yesterday’s game with calf tightness.
The Yankees have been hit hard by injuries in recent days. New York lost pitchers Chad Green and Luis Gil to Tommy John procedures over the weekend. Closer Aroldis Chapman hit the IL with Achilles tendinitis yesterday, and Boone told reporters this afternoon that Loáisiga was going on the IL with shoulder discomfort. The team’s official diagnosis for Loáisiga is shoulder inflammation.
New York welcomes Gallo back to the lineup a few days after he landed on the virus list. The power-hitting outfielder hit the IL on Sunday as part of a trio of Yankees suffering flu-like symptoms, but he and Kyle Higashioka have returned quickly. Gallo is capable of suiting up in either corner outfield spot but is struggling this season, owning just a .176/.294/.333 line through 119 plate appearances.
Brantly was selected onto the 40-man roster once Higashioka went out to offer some catching depth behind Jose Trevino. With Higahioka now back, Brantly loses his roster spot after appearing in one game. The 32-year-old has seen brief action at the big league level in each of the last four years, but he’s not tallied more than 40 MLB plate appearances in a season since 2013. He’ll have the right to refuse an outright assignment in favor of minor league free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

It’s bound to happen I guess. Hopefully it doesn’t keep him out longer than 10 days.

Hope not, he’s badly needed.

He’s gone but don’t worry, we got Gallo back. Hitting.170 and half the homers of Stanton is exactly what we need.

It wouldn’t be a real season if he wasn’t on the IL at least once. Judge should be there soon. No I am not wishing anyone hurt just seems those two are on at least once.

Rob Deer wasn’t horrible on defense. However, if there was a way to strike out 5 times in 3 at bats, Deer would have found it!

Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Good point, but according to baseball pundits, strike outs & batting average make no never mind. I miss baseball, not this crap
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Swing & a miss, swing & a miss, swing & a miss, swing &….oh wait, innings over. They want to speed up baseball? They’re doing a damn good job.. Stolen bases are slowly coming back, how about bunts? A good way of getting on base INSTEAD of striking out. Many teams are losing games by 1 run, how about some strategy?
When it was a game.
Well said.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, Curly, what the stat nerds seem to miss is that you can’t drive over, or in, any runs with a strikeout. What you CAN do, is kill a rally, leave RISP, & lose a game when it otherwise could’ve been tied or won.

Hopefully he heals early in the season and stays healthy the rest of the way. The Yankee lineup has been very good with him there in the middle of it. Short term they’l be ok. Longer term….. not so sure.

The confusion came in when you used the plural “things” instead of the singular “thing.”
Inflating their blow-up wives is a single action, so you’d use a singular noun to refer to it; i.e., thing.

I would be elated if he did. I’m a Gallo fan. Constantly pull for the guy. He frustrates me because he can make one change to his swing and probably change his entire career.

JerryBird
Captain – I’m not a hater, but I have always felt that Gallo is extremely overrated. It has been said a gazillion times about his strikeouts and inability to really hit. I would be more apt to breathe a sigh of relief instead of laugh if he could possibly break the Mendoza line in a Yankee uniform.
Yankee Clipper
Jerry, I think your point is valid, but I think it’s also applicable on a greater scale than just Gallo, to ALL TTO guys. They’re simply overrated stat darlings.
I do believe with Gallo’s discipline & size, a key adjustment to his swing mechanics could turn him into an actual offensive threat.
Captain Judge99
@JerryBird- your absolutely right about Gallo being overrated. Let’s face it he’s never going to win a batting title. The Yankees knew that when they acquired him last year. They traded for him because he could hit homers, this is likely his last season in pinstripes. And that’s fine.

162-Game Average
‘This is an attempt to condense each batter’s career into a single season’s worth of stats. With batters this is easy. Just take their career games played and divide by 162, and then divide their career totals by that factor.’
Do that, and you’ll arrive at 42.51906158357771, which, rounded up, is 43.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Another way to look at it: How many players have more than Stanton’s 358 home runs since his 2010 debut?
One. Nelson Cruz. In 1,046 more plate appearances.
Or you can look at it this way: How many players have hit more than Stanton’s 91 home runs since he joined the Yankees?
Forty-four.
Yankee Clipper
Perfectly stated, Fink.
miltpappas
I recently realized that without Stanton’s injuries and the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he’d possibly be shooting for 500 homers this season at 32.
bucketbrew35
I think he still gets to 500 easily if he can stay on the field long enough to do it. Unreal power. Dude basically flicks baseballs out of the yard.
Yankee Clipper
The calf strain…. Such a minor injury, but some guys have been out for months dealing with them. Hopefully his isn’t too bad because he’s desperately needed in this lineup. The NY lead could dissipate quickly if they don’t maintain.
Gallo & Hicks: Please stop sucking. Or, go to the IL, get your nails done, whatever.
Motown is My Town
You do realize Boone will only play him part time, 3 or 4 games a week, for the next 5 weeks after he returns in order to avoid him getting hurt again to save him for the playoffs. And since Boone is such a “great” manager the Yankees will miss the playoffs
Poster formerly known as . . .
The Yankees have never failed to make the playoffs under Boone’s management.
Yankee Clipper
JayHeck: Although I’m one of Boone’s most ardent critics, I must say, his average of 95 wins per season, coupled with the Yankees perennial appearance in the postseason (no doubt as a mandatory contribution to Bank of Steinbrenner), I sincerely doubt the Yankees miss the playoffs.
If there’s one thing the Yankees will not do, it’s miss the playoffs – the WC game is essentially a losing season for us.
But, Booner has made improvements this year with his management, the Yankees roster is better overall (still not where it should be), and because of the aforementioned, they will persevere.
DR2020
Ditto Clipper.Or just retire. Never thought I be hoping for the return of Gardner ha ha.
Yankee Clipper
“……Return of Gardy” Probably the most repeated line by Yankees fans this year.
The problem, imo, is that they did what was necessary, not what they could because they could to dominate. Again, they should’ve acquired a top-tier SS, IKF should’ve been a bench/UTL guy, a true CF was also necessary, & we had DJL as the other bench role.
But, this team may just work out if it can get healthy and stay that way. I still don’t get their plan with Florial – not trading him, not bringing him up, just playing a lackluster Hicks. I mean, goodness, what is the plan?
jopeness
the biggest hurt is he is very much less likely to play in the OF much at all rest of the season. Calf is so easy to re-injure. this loses the DH for the semi day offs we’ve been able to utilize.

Yeah, Doc, the power is what’s telling. He’s connecting his base to the ground again and staying strong on his front side. He looks good now that he’s been focused on going the other way – then when he gets a good pitch, he got everything moving forward, not pulling off the ball in an attempt to pull.
Plus, he’s keeping his head/hands back and it’s stopped his head from moving during his swing.
Gleyber has potential for sure, and he’s still really young.

40 years ago, I was in a head-on collision with a car while riding my bike. I woke up at the hospital with no memory of it. Three days later, I went running. Four weeks later, I ran a 10K PR. One of my friends joked that I shouldn’t try to stop a car with my face. I still have the scars.
If you think I am joking about injuries, you’re wrong. But I am making light of them. And further, Dr. Boonedoggle can’t even get it right. It’s not the calf at all. What a rube.
After 42 years of running over 68,000 miles, I can barely get up the stairs. Three viruses, two parasites, immune compromised and arthritic hips that both need replacement. I am taking dozens of pills. But I will make light of it every day. I don’t take myself seriously.
Like Stanton, I’ll be back. And maybe I’ll run my 24th marathon, if they’ll wait that long for me to finish. I am now slower than slow. The days of qualifying for Boston are way behind me.

Ankle inflammation is a better diagnosis. The initial diagnosis of a calf injury was concerning as they can linger. Decent chance he may be able return after his 10 days on the IL
YankeesBleacherCreature
Likely he won’t need a rehab assignment too and can hit once the inflammation starts subsiding.
Yankee Clipper
Shoot that baby up with cortisone and send him back out there!!!! I think the limit is…..50 injections per week – perhaps I’m a bit off.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I guess ankle inflammation is better than a calf strain. He can still do light leg workouts. Glad to see the new guys really step up tonight!
RobM
I’ve said more than a few times that the Yankees have a good MLB bullpen in Scranton in case injuries hit the big league club. I didn’t expect they’d have to fully depend on them, but we’re now there with Green, Chapman and Loaisiga out, not to mention Gil who was one of the arms who I thought could step in. Marinaccio has the stuff to be a major impact reliever, and Sears and Schmidt both have nasty pitches to be quality relievers out of the pen, or starters in a pinch. There’s several more arms in AAA who can step in if needed too.
Really hoping Andujar goes on a nice run. He was sent to the minors as a bad defensive 3B’man; he’s returned as a quality defensive LFer. We know he can hit.
Yankee Clipper
Andujar does look better in LF. His routes are better & his fielding has improved…. He almost looks…somewhat natural.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Nice rangy catch he made to his right tonight. Impressive. He’s credited with 1 Defensive Run Saved, and I think Fangraphs’ stats probably don’t reflect tonight’s game yet. They’re kinda slow over there.
Yankee Clipper
Which stat system are you primarily using Fink? I tend to think Fielding Bible supports my ultra-reliable eye test the most… OOA is good, but I think they’re missing a bit on the data entry side to make it as comprehensive as it could be, so it artificially inflates certain player’s stats.
I find Baseball Prospectus is the best for catcher stats.
Poster formerly known as . . .
DRS is a Fielding Bible metric, and I used to rely on it a lot; but now I refer to OAA more often. I really don’t know how they compare in terms of reliability. The gap between the two is sometimes wide, and it seems to me that both can’t be right when that’s the case. Fielding Bible stats are compiled by humans watching plays on computers. My vague understanding of Statcast’s OAA is that computers read the data tracked by cameras.
In his MLB article on OAA, Mike Petriello adds these caveats:
‘Worth noting, #1: A runner’s average sprint speed is used in the calculation, rather than “on that play,” because a fielder has to plan for a runner’s best, even if on some plays a runner jogs, trips, etc. For new players with no data, a league-average (27 ft/sec) score is used; once the player qualifies for the leaderboard, all of his previous plays are re-run.
‘Worth noting, #2: Only plays tracked by the system are included. Fortunately, most of the untracked plays are high popups or weak grounders, which are low-probability plays, and there is little to no bias between home ballparks. This is about getting the model into place, with the intention that future hardware updates will collect more data. Numbers may be expected to increase or decrease by approximately 20% for full-time players if all plays are tracked.’
mlb.com/news/statcast-introduces-outs-above-averag…
I don’t expect that any defensive metrics are 100% reliable. I think the best I can do is scan them all when appraising a player to get a general read on how good he probably is; or, when the range of the different ratings is all over the place, how tentative my conclusions should be.
I think the act of fielding a ball is more resistant to quantification than hitting or pitching because of its complexity. I think there are too many potentially impactful factors to account for all of them. If you can watch the plays yourself, I think your subjective impressions are good enough, provided you see a player often enough. The metrics are useful when they’re all that you have because you rarely see a guy play.
Yankee Clipper
Excellent summation, bro. I like your perspective on how fielding the ball is much more complex due to the variables involved, thus more difficult to accurately assess compared to hitting/pitching.
LordD99
I’m a longtime follower of defensive metrics. It’s a love-hate relationship. I can’t resist them. I believe they’ve improved over the decades, but are still incomplete. I also think people have too much faith in them. To quote Twain (even though he didn’t say it), there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Fans will find one statistic to support their claim about a player, while ignoring 10 other stats showing the opposite. One thing I am sure of is no defensive metric has properly captured the value of a good defensive 1B’man. One day, someone will, and the industry will collectively decide that I guess we shouldn’t have been putting bad defensive 1B’man out there all these years.
Yankee Clipper
L99: That’s an apt description for me as well. As unreliable as they are, I still check them….frequently. It’s weird (I’m weird). Love the Twain/not Twain quote btw…lol.
Anyway, the 1B stat is one to which I was referring, and here’s why: defensively, Rizzo is doing poorly according to the metrics, but watching him in every game, listening to those watching him play, & hear broadcasters describe his play all indicate Rizzo performs above average defensively.
On the other hand, watching some others play,(insert name), they are clearly not as defensively sound yet metrics favor them incredibly well…..almost too well.
I think what bothers me most is I like to know why. With defensive metrics, it’s doesn’t necessarily make sense.

What Can They Do To Correct Joey Gallo,So That He Starts Hitting With The Rest Of The Lineup?
Yankee Clipper
Nothing, honestly. Joey Gallo is the only one who can give Joey Gallo a shot at fixing himself and he doesn’t want to be fixed. His uppercut swing it too angled. He’s missing balls middle-middle. When you can’t hit one square down the middle, and you say, “that’s just who I am,” there’s probably not much hope, unfortunately.
If he were to alter his swing approach to more of a line drive, gap-to-gap style (center of the field), I believe his chances of contact would go way up, particularly in the center area of the zone. He’s so big & strong he would still have great HR power too. But he would strike out nearly as much.
