Yankees To Place Jonathan Loaisiga On IL Due To Shoulder Discomfort

By Mark Polishuk | May 25, 2022 at 3:37pm CDT

Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga is being placed on the injured list due to shoulder discomfort, manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including The Athletic’s Lindsey Adler).  A corresponding roster move hasn’t yet been announced in advance of New York’s game with the Orioles tonight.

It has been a tough year for Loaisiga, who has a 7.02 ERA through 16 2/3 innings out of New York’s bullpen.  While his SIERA (3.91) and xFIP (3.86) are a lot more favorable, Loaisiga hasn’t helped his cause with a 13.7% walk rate or three home runs allowed in his small sample size of playing time.

Homers and walks also hampered Loaisiga earlier in his Major League career, but the reliever got it all together during a superb 2021 season.  The righty posted a 2.17 ERA over 70 2/3 innings last year, standing out as arguably the best pitcher of an overall strong Yankees relief corps.  While his 24.4% strikeout rate in 2021 was nothing special, Loaisiga displayed excellent control (5.7% walk rate), a 60.9% grounder rate, and he surrendered only three home runs during the entirety of the season.

After going virtually injury-free over the first month of the 2022 campaign, the Yankees have recently been hit with some notable losses over the last week, particularly in the bullpen.  Aroldis Chapman is on the 15-day IL due to left Achilles tendinitis, while Chad Green has been lost for the season due to Tommy John surgery.  (Depth starter Luis Gil also underwent a TJ procedure, further depleting the pitching depth.)

The Yankees still have plenty of quality arms in their bullpen, but they’ll need some pitchers to step up with their closer and two top set-up options out of action.

The Yankees very healthy season has turned distinctly unhealthy over the past week.

Im sure they’ll be fine. They still have the best record in all of baseball.

By half a game. With TB only 4.5 games behind. Sure the hot start is great but there’s way too much season left to start feeling complacent.

I don’t believe it’s a question of complacency. The advantage of their great start is they can weather the storm for a bit, but not for long in their division. Their once very deep bullpen has been critical to their success. It’s now in shambles just as they go and play the Rays. Not ideal, but all teams face injuries. The 162-game schedule is a grind.

Glad you’re sure. I’d be a little worried. Every Stanton injury is a potential long term injury. Loaisiga has a history of shoulder problems. Chapman is a long term risk. Green is gone. DJ is no longer a young player who bounces right back. With the walking IL guy in center and mildly injury prone Donaldson, things could go south pretty quickly.

And MLBTR didn’t mention Stanton having a MRI on his calf and DJLM having a wrist issue that’s keeping him out of the lineup a couple of days. Fortunately his MRI came back negative.

They also said the MRI wasn’t read today so they won’t know until tomorrow

Sears would have to be the corresponding roster move, since he’s starting tonight and isn’t on the roster.

Any interest in Cubs reliever Chris Martin? Wouldn’t cost much. Maybe a Warren/Fitts/Champlain?

Sears will be one of a few moves made today with Stanton and DJLM hurting and Brantly’s presence still on the roster. Bullpen could use another arm too but they may wait to demote Sears tomorrow. My prediction is a non-40 man guy will be signed to the active roster today. Maybe Shelby Miller? He’s looked good in the AAA bullpen. Maybe Ryan LaMarre or Derek Dietrich? Inciarte may be redundant with Florial on the roster.

Tim Huwe is a so-called writer who can’t articulate very well, and craves attention by doing play-by-play for MiLB games on Twitter to an audience that mostly ignores him. He is trending towards obsolescence.

          As always, we await developments.

Probably use the injury to be able to recall McKay, and then DFA Brantly to make room for Sears.

I didn’t think Johnny Lasagna looked right this year. His slider had no movement at all.

Yeah, certainly lacking accuracy on his two-seamer. Overthrowing may very well be the cause. Sometimes these guys get obsessed with the triple digits on the boards instead of the outcome of their performance. Then they see Hicks hitting 102MPH consistently & feel 100MPH Isn’t enough. I think that’s what the underlying problem with Chapman is too. Instead of throwing a good 98-99 and being consistent, he’s still obsessed with maintaining 100+, therefore he overthrows to achieve the number.

What would a Yankees offer be for Luis Castillo. It would have to start with Oswald Peraza then add 2 or 3 pieces along with it. Do it soon and New York has Castillo for 1 1/2 years at least.

Reds have some other pieces to add. When Jose berrios comes off the disabled list Kyle Farmer will be out of a spot. Tommy phan has started hitting and can cover an outfield spot. Even Mike moutsakes has hit better this year and with some money added could cover 3td base, 1st base and DH. As to the bullpen maybe a reuniting with Luis cessa

First Giancarlo Stanton, now Johnny Lasagna. Next will be Aaron Hicks then Josh Donaldson pulls up lame on a simple grounder, then Michael King feels a twinge…. The pratfalls of a roster poorly designed and advancing in age.

They’ll be fine. Judge, Gallo, Donaldson, Torres and Hicks will carry the load. The “Break glass in case of Emergency” Gardner signing hasn’t happened yet, thus all is good.
