Roster Moves: Brewers, Red Sox, Twins

By TC Zencka | June 23, 2022 at 4:21pm CDT

The Brewers have acquired Triple-A infielder Patrick Dorrian from the Orioles in exchange for cash considerations, per MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy (via Twitter). Dorrian, 25, hit .161/.256/.269 over 169 plate appearances with Triple-A Norfolk this season. As recently as last year, however, Dorrian posted a solid .246/.362/.475 in 473 plate appearances in Double-A. The Brewers will see if they can rekindle some of that magic in Triple-A.

  • The Red Sox have optioned Jeter Downs back to Triple-A. The move comes in anticipation of activating Christian Arroyo tomorrow, per Christopher Smith of masslive.com. Downs spent just three days on the active roster, going 0-4 in his debut with three strikeouts. Arroyo is on the COVID injured list but is expected back for Friday’s game. Arroyo has gotten off to a slow start, slashing .187/.227/.319 over 98 plate appearances.
  • The Twins optioned Josh Winder to Triple-A, per Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press (via Twitter). Winder just completed a rehab assignment, so he had to be returned to the active roster and optioned. The 25-year-old right-hander made three starts and pitched four times out of the bullpen this season, pitching to a 3.68 ERA/4.36 FIP over 29 1/3 innings. Winder has three options remaining, so the Twins can easily give him more time in the minors.

So the Sox option Downs back to AAA. Now there is a shock. And he K’d 3 times….another shock. Bloom should be ashamed of the players he settled for in return for Mookie. But hey….let’s go to Fenway and pay $100/ticket and buy some Red Sox $10 popcorn.

When he traded Betts, Betts had one year left on his contract, Downs was coming off a 20/20 season with an OPS over .880, and Alex Verdugo was coming of a strong rookie season. What more would you have liked him to get? Gavin Lux and Josiah Gray?

He should’ve traded Betts at the deadline of 19… but still, he did what he had to.

Pedey – It would have been difficult for Bloom to trade Betts at the 2019 trade deadline, considering he was Senior VP of Baseball Operations for the Rays at the time.

Yeah, Bloom turned down all those better offers…

Your point was that there were better offers, right? Or that Bloom could convince him to resign.

I guess this is a good opportunity to once again remind people that at the time of the trade Betts was widely considered to be the 2nd-best player in MLB and teams knew he would be looking for a contract extension well north of $300M. Since very few teams were willing and able to give that kind of contract extension, most teams didn’t want to part with top talent for a one-year rental.

And as others have already stated, Dugie and Downs were valued a lot higher at the time. Nobody expected them to turn into Trot Nixon and Juan Bustabad.

fitted – Fenway is where they sell beer only in plastic cups at the concessions, not in plastic bottles, and they refuse to provide lids. Why? Because most people will spill at least 10% by the team they get back to their seat, which means they will be empty faster and therefore will buy more beer.

It’s both devious and ingenious at the same time.

If the season ended today; they’d be in the playoffs and have a steadily improving minor league system per baseball America… sure, makes tons of sense to dump on the GM who was put in a weird place to get value for a player who was vocal about wanting to test the free agent market.
Oh, and ticket and concession prices are high everywhere.

        ‘Mookie Betts wanted to stay.

‘At least according to Hall of Famer and former Red Sox slugger Jim Rice, who says Betts admitted to him on Tuesday — when he was traded to the LA Dodgers — that Boston was where he wanted to remain:

‘Hall of Famer Jim Rice spoke to Mookie Betts last night.

What does cost at Fenway have to do with anything? It’s one of the smallest parks in baseball. Wouldn’t team revenue be a much more accurate assessment of a teams financial clout? Let’s see, Dodgers first, Yankees second, Red Sox third. And the Red Sox lost out to Dodgers.

          Just the REAL facts.

        • Fink Ployed

I didn’t raise the topic of Fenway prices. I just responded to a poster who did. That Fenway is the most expensive place, on average, to watch a ballgame is a real fact, Marvin.

That the facts are what they are, don’t blame me.

BTW, Forbes says the Yankees had only $3M more in revenue than the Red Sox:

        • Fink Ployed

Also note: according to Forbes, Boston had the highest operating income of the three. Operating income is profit after subtracting operating expenses.

        • MudyChicken

Operating expense takes into account player payroll, so the Dodgers have higher operating expenses because they are over-paying on FAs like Betts. Revenue is a much truer indication of how much a team has to spend. A guy who makes $1Mil then pissses away $800,000 in Vegas, has much financial flexibility, than a guy who makes $600,000 and only spends $300,000.

Players ask to be traded every season.
          ====================================
Fair enough. Just to clarify, no pending FA ever writes off his current team. And why would they? They want to put pressure on the FO to extend them. They want the fans to like them. In virtually 100% of the cases, they say virtually the identical thing; “I love xxx, I love the fans, I’ve been here my entire life. I’d love to sign here”

And, FWIW, the owners do the same thing. The RS FO professes love for all their impending FAs, and say “We want to make xxx a Red Sox for life”.

But at least half the time, decisions have already been made.

Play him full time and he’d be better. Cora doesn’t start him everyday and when he does start, he never knows his position. Guy moves all over the place. You try doing that, it’s not easy.

‘start him everyday’ === What? Who sits, Bogaerts, Story or Devers? I hope your not suggesting RF, where he has never played before this season, and has looked terrible in a small sample. June/July isn’t the time to be teaching players new positions.

Chicken – If the Sox are smart, when Hernandez returns they will keep Ref and Duran. If Arroyo doesn’t improve by then, he should be the odd man out.

Arroyo should be released! He has no path to playing time. Arroyo has been in RF, but Refsnyder IS ACTUALLY AN OUTFIELDER not pretending like Arroyo. Refsnyder is a much better hitter. The at bats should go to Refsnyder instead of Arroyo. When Enrique Hernandez comes back from the DL he can serve as backup infielder with Duran starting in CF.

The Red Sox are 14-4 in June as the weak bats have been on the DL. Duran is hitting over .300, and Refsnyder has been hitting as well.

Downs was only called up because he was the only non-injured infielder already on the 40 man. His call up was always going to be until Arroyo was ready to be activated, so there’s nothing to make of him getting sent down. His numbers have been bad in the minors, but it’s still too early to judge.

It doesn’t matter to me neither player moves the needle right now. It’d serve Arroyo right with those pathetic numbers that they give someone else a shot. I just don’t think it’s Jeter Downs though his numbers suck too. What is going to be interesting is when Keke is healthy what are the Sox going to do with Duran? Duran has produced and deserves to stay.,
