Giants Place Joc Pederson On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | July 29, 2022 at 6:16pm CDT

The Giants have placed outfielder Joc Pederson on the seven-day injured list, which is specific to concussion-like symptoms. Infielder Jason Vosler has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take his active roster spot.

Pederson has been one of the Giants more productive hitters this season. Signed to a $6MM deal over the winter, he’s hit 17 home runs in only 285 plate appearances. Pederson has a .242/.319/.492 line, splitting his time between the corner outfield and designated hitter. It’s something of a bounceback showing for the 30-year-old, who posted below-average offensive numbers between 2020-21 after a generally strong run with the Dodgers.

While Pederson could return to the lineup within a week, his trip to the IL comes at an interesting time for the Giants. San Francisco enters play tonight with a 49-50 record, placing them three games back in the NL Wild Card race. The next few days could prove pivotal towards determining how president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and his staff approach the deadline. They’ll have to navigate the next few games without one of their better left-handed bats.

If the Giants did decide to sell, Pederson would be an interesting trade candidate himself. He’s an affordable platoon bat who’d certainly appeal to contenders searching for that kind of player. As an impending free agent, Pederson would be among the likeliest players the Giants could deal if they moved anyone. He checked in 22nd on MLBTR’s list of the top 60 deadline trade candidates this afternoon. Players on the IL can still be traded, so the Giants could move Pederson before next Tuesday’s deadline if other clubs continue to express interest despite the concussion symptoms.

I propose a Braves trade of Tyler Collins and Justin Dean for Jorge Soler. They are both 70 speed and 30 power type center-fielders.

I mention this because I think Soler is a better fit than Pederson for Braves.

Collins, the Braves # 21 prospect is only 19 and has more upside. Dean is the Braves #30 prospect and is already 25. Probably has a ceiling of a fourth or fifth outfielder.

It was a lot of fun to watch them both play last season, but Pederson is the better fit this season. The Braves desperately need more LH pop.

        I’m hoping they require him.

The problem is you don’t know what you’re gonna get out of Soler. Braves saw the best of him last year, but he’s NOT having a good year in MIA.

Very true @solaris, and he’ll have 2 years left on that deal after this one. No thanks. Plus, where would he play? The Braves need a LF, not a RF.

Sell everything you can and then actually spend money on talent in the off-season. Last year was a fluke. The dumpster diving is beyond old. The fans deserve better. Giants actually won last night for the first time in over a week, not because they are good but because they got a few really lucky breaks. I’m a Giants fan, but I’m starting to feel like that dude who always posts about LOL Giants on here. Have tickets to the game tomorrow but I’d way rather go spend a 100 bucks sucking at golf than on a couple of beers and hotdogs watching the Giants suck.

Oh, and fire Kapler. Guy sounds like a sociology professor at some liberal arts school, not a major league baseball manager.

No he really doesn’t . Kepler injected his personal negative opinion of our country into the baseball season. Yes, he has a first amendment right to speak his mind. But most importantly, he was not asked for his opinion; more importantly, the Giants went into a complete tailspin a couple days later.

Yes, Ted, and fans deserve a team that could win 107 games. You know, people like you feel a team is lucky/fluky to win 107 and therefore give no credit to this manager, because you don’t like him and feel he should be teaching sociology. Then when essentially that same team adds 2 Allstars, yet has huge regressions in so many areas, its the managers fault. I’ve been a Giants fan for 55 years. I may have had more fun watching them last in2021 than essentially ever. They have a plan that unexpectedly exceededtheir expectations early (2021). This year is frustrating, yes, but a true Giants fan (not one dating back to 2010) hangs in there. So I suggest the following: 1. root for the Yankees, 2. locate Tonygwynn19LOL and become his beastie, 3. DONT WASTE ur time responding to me cuz I will never interact again with you going forward and 4, please leave your tickets for tomorrow’s game at will call. Clearly you’re not interested in Will Clark’s number retirement, after all he played well before 2010.

Save the fan since 2010 bs. That’s such a played out line to throw at a Giants fan who questions the roster and coaching staff construction. The Thrill getting his number retired will be the only interesting thing that happens at the stadium tomorrow, certainly won’t be any compelling baseball to watch. But hey, hopefully Yermin Mercedes will get some sweet bloop knocks.

Last year was the worst thing that could happen to the Giants. It was fools gold and just delayed the inevitable another year. They won 3 series and then got greedy and kept believing that could catch lightening in a bottle again and they’ve spent 8 futile seasons trying. They’re a hodgepodge of players, good a one aspect of the game but no one is great at anything. I’d sell nearly everything and build a strong core because I don’t really see anything all that appealing on the horizon. They have a few highly prospects but their history is not great when considering the farm as a whole. Ya Giants fans will rattle off a few successes but no one’s chomping at the bit for their prospects. JMHO

      Truth @senior editor

Last seasons anomaly set them back because they bought into the fact that they are a playoff caliber team….they are not and to be fair they didn’t have a playoff caliber team last season either

What they had was aging players reviving their careers all in the same season and some players having career years….I think everyone knew they would fall apart….I know I did

Sell sell sell….anything and everything should be available….

All fair points but it’s also really hard to win a WS. What they did in 2010-2014 was rare and spectacular. The Giants are far from “futile” compared to many other organizations in this league.

Giant errors have played a big role in the losing season.
If you are a giants fan, you know that Crawford is an excellent defensive SS.
He makes all the plays, makes those around him better. Also Belt is an excellent defensive 1B, he’s missed huge time this year as has Crawford.
When you’re a team in a pitchers park you need to make those tough plays in the infield to keep the game close, the Giants play for 4-2, 5-4, 3-1 games, tight games.
The defense this year has been horrible!
Rebuild, now they can and will. Good pitching will always keep them around ,500+ but not when the defense stinks.
They should and will trade Pederson. Know Farid another arm is coming.

If Muncy and Bellinger are going to hit significantly below the average MLB OPS line I’d say grab Pederson and platoon him with Taylor at LF and DH him. Lux takes 2B.
