Tigers To Select Drew Hutchison

By Steve Adams | July 5, 2022 at 9:24am CDT

Righty Drew Hutchison is headed back to the Tigers for his third stint this season. Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports that Hutchison’s contract will be selected this week so that he can start one of the final two games of the team’s current series against the Guardians. The Tigers will need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move to accommodate Hutchison’s selection back to the big leagues.

Hutchison inked a minor league deal with the Tigers back in March, made the Opening Day roster and has twice been designated for assignment by the team. He elected free agency and quickly re-signed on a new minor league deal in both instances. That’s not entirely uncommon for veteran players of this nature who are playing on minor league contracts.

Hutchison discussed the cyclical nature of his Tigers tenure with McCosky, praising the team for being “very upfront” and honest with their communication. “That’s all you can ask for as a player,” said Hutchison. Given the circumstances of Hutchison’s latest call to the big leagues — the Tigers again find themselves in need of a starter for an injury-depleted rotation — the whole process could eventually play out again. However, none of the Tigers’ absent starters appear close to a return at present, so Hutchison could be entrusted with multiple starts this time around.

The 31-year-old Hutchison has made just one appearance in Triple-A Toledo since rejoining the Tigers late last month, tossing four innings and yielding three runs on five hits and no walks with six punchouts on June 30. He threw 67 pitches in that outing — his most in any Major League or Triple-A game this season — which suggests he could build on that a bit further in his forthcoming start for the Tigers. Hutchison has a 3.95 ERA in 13 2/3 innings with Toledo this season and a 4.81 mark in 24 1/3 Major League innings.

I thought I heard Will Vest was the corresponding move?

I believe Vest is the corresponding 26-man roster move because he has options and there is a limit to the number of pitchers that can be on the 26-man. I think the issue now is the 40-man roster, not the 26.

Vest is being sent down yes, to make room for Hutchinson. 13 pitcher max right now. But the 40 man is full so another move will need to be done to create room for Hutchinson.

DFA waiver claim Sam Howard or move Joey Wentz to the 60-day IL if he isn’t coming back soon. Wentz is already 36 days into the 60.

Wentz would have to be activated to the MLB roster in order to put him on the 60 day IL. He is in the minors right now on their 7 day list. Makes it seem likely that Sam Howard, who is a 29 year old journeyman pitcher will be the one to be DFA’d to clear room for Hutchinson

Already done when they selected Garrett Hill.

Was just pointing that out myself. There’s no obvious 60-day candidate right now unless the injuries to Rony Garcia or Austin Meadows are more serious than publicly indicated thus far.

I’d be willing to part with Grossman.

          But, it’ll be Clemens.

They wont DFA Clemens. My guess is Zack Short. Could be Sam Howard or Brendon Davis too. Could be Grossman if the tigers find a trade partner, doubt it though.

Since Garcia is on the 15 day-IL and Faedo seems gassed, I am sure Hutchison’s stint will be a little longer now. Even if Ed. Rodriguez came back, he would need a minor league assignment before being able to start again.

Where is Rodriguez? How much time do you get off for “family issues “?

He’s in Florida with his kids. He gets as much time off as he needs, but he doesn’t get paid. I think his lost pay comes out to a little less than $80,000 per day.

Avila said today that they’ve reached out to E-Rod recently and haven’t heard back. I hope they figure out a way to void that contract.
