Angels Reinstate Mike Trout

By Darragh McDonald | August 19, 2022 at 2:50pm CDT

The Angels announced that outfielder Mike Trout has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list. After Wednesday’s game, they opened a spot on the active roster by optioning fellow outfielder Steven Duggar.

The return of Trout after just over a month on the IL will surely be a tremendous sigh of relief for the Angels and their fans, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was just last year that Trout landed on the injured list due to a seemingly minor calf injury. However, that injury lingered and Trout was never able to return, limiting him to just 36 games on the season.

Secondly, this year’s injury, which was initially termed “ribcage inflammation” at the time of his IL placement, was followed by a very ominous-sounding report from Mike Frostad, the club’s head trainer. Frostrad relayed that Trout had been diagnosed with a “a costovertebral dysfunction” in his back, adding that Trout “has to manage it, not just through the rest of this season, but also through the rest of his career probably.”

Given that Trout had already lost most of his 2021 season due to a nagging condition, this update caused understandable consternation among the fanbase. With Frostad’s description of the issue making it seem chronic and ongoing, some wondered if Trout would ever get back to his previous elite level, but the superstar was quick to shrug off those concerns. “I appreciate all the prayer requests, but my career isn’t over,” Trout quipped at the time of Frostad’s report. Subsequent developments helped part the storm clouds hanging over the situation, as Trout later saw a specialist and began ramping up physical activities by the end of July, eventually leading to today’s return.

Before landing on the injured list, Trout was still one of the best players in baseball. He hit 24 home runs in 79 games and produced an overall batting line of .270/.368/.599. That production amounts to a wRC+ of 169, or 69% above league average, fourth-highest in baseball among those with at least 300 plate appearances on the year.

While Trout’s return will be most welcome for the Angels, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the team in terms of this year’s standings. The Halos are 12 1/2 games out of a playoff spot and have a 0.0% chance of a miracle comeback, according to the playoff odds calculated by FanGraphs. However, just returning to health and getting back onto the field is still a positive development, considering last year’s frustrations and the worries surrounding this recent issue.

Imagine the numbers he would put up if he wasn’t so fragile. Absolutely one of my favorite players (probably ever), but between the constant injuries, and playing for an absolute dogsh*t franchise, Trout is becoming an afterthought. Still going to the Hall, but the GOAT talk is pretty much over for me.

713 ABs since the 2019 season ended.

    2022 – 79 games played
    2021 – 36 games played
2020 – 53 games (short season – but still missed 12 percent of the season)
    2019 – 134 games
    2018 – 140 games

Griffey was getting gold glove when they awarded multiple gloves to CF.

Trout has already eclipsed Griffey best OPS+ 7 times. Griffey’s best OBP is not even close to Trouts’s average OBP.

I’m glad you watched them both play. Did you learn anything about the game during that time?

Did Trout drive in 140+ four years in a row? Or was he looking to walk.Ever hit over 50 dingers like griffey did multiple times? Where Edger Martinez and Frank Thomas better then trout with higher OBP? Should we compare playoff stats or does Trout even have any?

Wait, you think those stats prove Griffey is a better fielder? These are the years he won gold gloves and Trout had several years with better numbers. I am proving to you that gold glove is not a very good award.

The average over those 10 years for Griffey is 6.9 (lol) and for Trout is 5.1. Those are pretty similar numbers. Definitely not a 10 gold glove difference in my opinion.

I’m not arguing that Griffey was a worse fielder than Trout (although I do think the stats show they are fairly similar), but he definitely was not the BEST fielder in the game.

I do not believe that the players getting on base in front of Griffey make him a better player. As a matter of fact, it makes him a worse hitter in my mind since he had production in front and behind him in the lineup stressing the pitchers out more. Trout has long been the only hitter on the team and is pitched around all the time.

Pitchers don’t have to pitch to Trout and he still tears it up. Pitchers did have to pitch to Griffey. At the end of the day, how many championships did Griffey win?

Trout won the mvp in 2016. Compare Griffey’s 1998 season were he finished fourth. 56 hrs to 29 or is it more important to walk to appease your stats that think walking is the new end all be all.

Both superior athletes with high end baseball skill sets. Fun to watch both play. For whatever reason, that intangible, the phycological skill set, required to win it all was not present in Griffey and Trout ain’t got it either. Those types of players lead/carry their teams to World Series victories.

My favorite ball player in this regard was Jack Morris and I’m an Orioles fan. I admired his tenacity in the highest pressure situations of this game. Fearless. From my beloved Birds, IMHO, the guy that had this was Frank Robinson.

          Wrong. He had 154 assists.

Griffey averaged 0.065 outfield assists per game over his career. Trout is averaging a little over 0.031 outfield assists per game. So Griffey makes about twice the outfield assists per game as Trout.

Griffey also makes 0.037 outfield errors per game. Trout makes 0.016 outfield errors a game. So Griffey makes errors at twice the rate Trout does.

And the first thing you wrote was Gold Gloves. Did Griffey compete for those gloves against players not in his era? So right there you are contradicting yourself,

wRC+. Since 1970, Trout is second to Barry Bonds, one number behind. Griffey is one number ahead of Jim Edmonds.

Edmond has been in the top ten of defensive WAR five times Griffey three. I could make a better argument that out for out, inning for inning, Edmonds was as good as Griffey.

          Griffey first 1050 games = 50.1 WAR
          Trout first 1050 games = 64.5 WAR

          Griffey career (22 seasons) = 83.8 WAR
          Trout career (12 seasons) = 79.9 WAR

@Mets698622 – Trout’s seasonal WAR total will undoubtedly decrease as he ages but they won’t slip into the minus. I suspect Trout will be 100+ WAR if he is able to play out the remaining 8 years of his contract which would make it a 20 year career…..2 less than Griffey.

And yes, Trout has dealt with various injuries over the past few years but I don’t expect to read he was caught sleeping through games like Griffey was.

About right. Inane comment with no sense of perspective or context gets more upvotes than the original post, which actually made a point other than “duh, he dumb!”.

It refers to comments made by Tatis Sr., demonstrating the foolishness of his claim.

He’s 8th in the AL in WAR for Position Players.

He’ll likely move up to the top five before the season is done,

He’ll have to settle for 3rd in wRC+.

There wasn’t a lot of games on TV in the 70s. Before the 90s, fans caught glimpses of players. With that caveat, Trout is the best non PED player I’ve ever seen. And data backs that up.

And OBP and slugging are always my two go two stats, and they are best applied in the era a player played. Anyone who doesn’t compare data that way is clueless. The game is constantly evolving. If the shift goes away, next year’s data will be different than this year’s data.

You don’t compare the great Tom Seaver by using pitcher’s data of the 60s.

DH him rest of the year.(Can Ohtani still play outfield?) Angels aren’t playing for anything. Baseball needs a healthy Trout (preferably on a different team, but one step at a time.)

Trout plays a quality CF and still has elite speed.

He doesn’t get hurt playing CF. This latest injury is from swinging a bat.

      Do you guys follow baseball.

Why so nasty? Sorry that someone actually wants to see him playing and not heading back to the IL. Guess what…if he is playing, he is hitting, and apparently that is where the injury came from per your post.

OK, I may have mixed that last one up with another player…..

Welcome back, Mike. Lets set a goal of playing 37 of the remaining 44 games. It will never happen this year, but I suggest; a move to LF, one game/week at DH and one game/week off. Shohei could use one game/week off also so he doesn’t wear down like last year.

The Angels are spending over $70M per year on Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon. Since Rendon signed with the Angels, I don’t believe they’ve had one season where Trout & Rendon have played 162 total games combined between the two of them. So they are paying $70M+ for the equivalent of one full time (or even part time) player. Maybe next year will be the year where both players stay healthy enough to play at least 120 games apiece. Getting 400+ ABs per player next year would be a huge accomplishment given their track records. It’s a shame that these two contracts are going to prevent them from re-signing Ohtani. They really need to get the Rendon deal over and done with so they can start spending again. This team’s a long ways away from being competitive.

In the two season that Trout and Rendon have played at the same time, they have not played 162 games. Maybe that’s why they stink this year in spite of having good starting pitching.

The Rays have no megastars like Ohtani, Trout, or Rendon; they have been ravaged by injuries, missing five starters from lineup, as much as a full rotation of starters, and a handful of their best relievers…the entire season.

Yet, they are in a wildcard spot. Huh.

The Angels are the reason why long contracts shouldn’t be giving out. As soon as they sign anyone long term that person is doomed for constant IL stints.

I see the Angels have Fletch batting 5th tonight. His OBP is .430+ since his return and .500+ in the past 7 games. With that in mind, I would have gone Fletch, Trout, Ohtani, Rengifo, Ward, etc. If Fletch gets on base tonight from the 5 hole, Walsh, Adell, Rojas and Suzuki will statistically strand him at 1B. Hoping for the best, but fearing a repeat of countless other nights.

“Mike Trout is returning from the IL SOON!”

How many time have you heard that sentence
    Over the past 4 years???

Great Natural ball player. BUT—— He can not stay Healthy over a full season of play.

Could some of these injuries have been caused because of poor workouts due to the frustration toward the Angels for a care less attitude about getting in the playoffs?

I do believe, through his recent interviews, Ohtani has observed a multi time MVP (Trout), being held hostage by a losing team and MLB Franchise!!!!

Look for Ohtani to refuse any offers the Angels propose to him!!!

Ohtani doesn’t want to be an aging Star, stuck on a team who consistently never wants to win their division.

Trust me—— Ohtani is hitting the road to the neighboring Dodgers, as quick as he can get the opportunity to do so!!!

Five years ago, most of the time he missed was due to his best friend and his wife’s brother committing suicide.

Four years? Four years ago he was MVP. 2019.

Three years ago, you never heard it.

Two years ago, you never heard it. He suffered a season ending injury.

This year he tweaked his back.

So to put this into perspective, the last two years he’s had two soft tissue injuries that are a concern. But people are talking about this like this is the end. But he’s still 3rd in the AL in wRC+ and that wRC+ is still higher than anything Griffey Jr put up and there is one poster on this thread that thinks Griffey was the beat player in the last 50 years.

I think people need some perspective
