Blue Jays Acquire Edward Duran From Marlins

By Anthony Franco | August 31, 2022 at 7:43pm CDT

The Blue Jays announced they’ve acquired minor league catcher Edward Duran from the Marlins. He’s the player to be named later in the deadline day swap that sent relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop to Toronto in exchange for infield prospect Jordan Groshans.

Duran was eligible to be traded even after the August 2 deadline, as he’s never occupied a spot on a 40-man roster. As MLBTR’s Steve Adams explored this month, players who have spent the entire season in the minor leagues and haven’t been added to an MLB 40-man or injured list at any point this year are still eligible to be traded.

An 18-year-old catcher, Duran signed with Miami as an amateur free agent from Venezuela before the 2021 season. The right-handed hitter has spent the past two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. He’s never appeared on an organizational prospect ranking at FanGraphs or Baseball America.

Bass has had a solid first month in Toronto, allowing only two runs in 12 1/3 innings. He’s struck out 12 while walking four. Pop has made seven MLB appearances and two in Triple-A since the trade, only allowing two runs in 6 2/3 big league frames despite striking out just one batter. Groshans, meanwhile, has raked with the Marlins top affiliate in Jacksonville. He’s hitting .342/.420/.487 with two homers in 88 plate appearances and will need to be added to Miami’s 40-man roster this offseason.

You mean to tell me that it wasn’t Steve Okert? Why couldn’t it be Okert? That would’ve been the ultimate dump a lot of your garbage in a trade move.

So we’re still stuck with multiple incompetent relievers. Ugh!

Honestly even if duran was on the 40-Man roster he could still have been traded now since the trade became official before the deadline. he was technically still officially traded before the deadline

      @redsfan
Honestly, that’s not how it works. But thanks for playing.

No, but it’d open some really cool ways to circumvent the deadline. Lol

The Red Sox should have captured Duran so that way they can have Duran Duran.

If Groshans needs to be added to the 40-man roster during this offseason and now with Rojas injured, why not calling him up today with the rosters expanded? I see it as an obvious move, but with the Marlins, you never know.

Thank the Lord. Toronto is awfully light on catchers.

this move screams them offloading one of kirk/moreno/Jansen this off-season.

It better be Jansen as he is aweful behind the plate. Not to mention he is still tipping pitches, breaking ball or fastball. I mean I’ve seen this before Joe mentioned it, over a month a go, and I am just an armchair manager, yet the Blue Jays still have not addressed it and they continue to play Jansen. Well at least he is not currently an automatic out, hope it last longer than a “week” this time.

The kid is 18. He’s hardly pushing any plans for the major league roster just by his acquisition.

Maybe they just really like Venezuelan catchers and want someone ready in 4-5 years when Moreno may or may not sign longer term.

Soviet – no it unequivocally does not scream that.

Getting an 18 year old from the Dominican Summer League screams offloading somebody this offseason to you? Duran’s ETA is ~2028.

Shhhh…Blue Jays fans think they make good trades. They feel they ripped the Marlins off when they traded Griffin Conine for Jonathan Villar as a rental. They also think trading a good prospect for Bass and Pop was a good trade too.

I just don’t think Groshans is the prospect he’s made out to be. Unless he magically develops power, his ceiling is basically Santiago Espinal without the stellar defense (that is, Espinal without the whole thing that makes Espinal valuable).

      FYI marlins fan base

Your team is historically one of the worst at trading and dumping great players for nothing. Also I don’t know many jays fans that are happy about any trades we have made recently
