Walker Buehler To Undergo Season-Ending Elbow Surgery

By Steve Adams | August 15, 2022 at 4:44pm CDT

The Dodgers announced Monday that right-hander Walker Buehler will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow on Aug. 23. He’s been out since June 10 after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 flexor strain. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic tweets that Buehler’s recent MRIs weren’t conclusive enough to determine the extent of the damage in his elbow, but Dr. Neal ElAttrache saw enough to recommend surgery. Presumably, the Dodgers will provide further details once the procedure has been performed.

That injury initially called for a six- to eight-week shutdown from throwing, and the Dodgers had surely hoped that Buehler might be able to make a comeback in late September and/or perhaps in the postseason. Instead, he won’t pitch again until next season at the earliest. Further details aren’t clear, as the team declined to provide specifics on the nature of the procedure in its initial announcement.

Buehler, 28, finished fourth in National League Cy Young voting last season but has now had multiple arm issues this season. Once it was clear that the forearm strain would sideline Buehler for as long as three months, he underwent an arthroscopic procedure to remove a bone spur from his elbow — an issue he said had plagued him for the past few seasons.

The arm issue(s) have limited Buehler to 65 innings in 2022, during which time he’s posted a 4.02 ERA with a career-low 21.2% strikeout rate. They’re pedestrian numbers by his lofty standards — both roughly in line with the league-average production among MLB starting pitchers (4.09 ERA, 21.4% strikeout rate).

Dating back to his first full big league season, in 2018, Buehler has established himself as a rock in the Dodgers’ rotation and as one of the most talented arms in the National League. He ranks 23rd in the Majors in innings pitched from 2018-22 — even with this year’s glut of missed time — and also ranks seventh in ERA (2.95), 25th in strikeout rate (27%) and 32nd in walk rate (6.2%) amid a field of 152 qualified starting pitchers in that time.

For the time being, Buehler will join both Clayton Kershaw (lower back discomfort) and Dustin May (recovering from 2021 Tommy John surgery) on the injured list. Both May and Kershaw figure to return before the end of the regular season. May recently punched out 10 hitters over five innings in his fifth Triple-A start of the season. He’s built up to 70 pitches. Kershaw, meanwhile, recently underwent an epidural injection and has resumed throwing, though there’s no immediate timetable for him to return to the Major League mound.

With that trio on the shelf, the Dodgers will look to Julio Urias, Tony Gonsolin, Tyler Anderson, Andrew Heaney and rookie Ryan Pepiot as rotation options — though Pepiot could soon be pushed out by May. Even absent a pair of big-name arms like Kershaw and Buehler, it’s a formidable group thanks to breakout performances from each of Gonsolin (2.24 ERA, 116 1/3 innings pitched), Anderson (2.81 ERA, 128 1/3 innings) and Heaney (1.16 ERA, 32.3% strikeout rate in 31 innings).

Obviously, not being able to pencil Buehler into a hopeful postseason rotation stings, but the group of Urias, Gonsolin and Kershaw is still a formidable top three, with May, Anderson and Heaney  all standing as potential playoff starters as well. The broader question for the Dodgers is just what Buehler’s recovery and 2023 outlook will be.

Even in the event that Buehler required Tommy John surgery and would need to miss the majority of the 2023 season — which, to be emphatically clear, has not been indicated or even implied by the team — he’d still be a lock to be tendered a contract. The 2022 campaign was the second of a two-year, $8MM deal buying out Buehler’s first two arbitration years. He’ll be arb-eligible four times as a Super Two player, meaning he has two raises to go. Because of this year’s limited workload, he’ll be due only a modest raise on his $4.25MM salary, making it a no-brainer for the Dodgers to keep him in the fold.

That said, the extent of Buehler’s recovery period will surely impact the Dodgers’ offseason direction and inform the level of aggression with which they pursue rotation help. The Dodgers currently stand to see Kershaw, Anderson and Heaney all potentially walk as free agents, so they’ll definitely be in the mix for starting pitching help this offseason.

The only things finished are Tony La Russa’s pre-game beers, and the White Sox hopes.

As a guess, this could mean Tommy John Surgery. Often, forearm strains (strain is really a nice way of saying tear) lead to this.
They probably aren’t able to tell from the MRI because of swelling. So, they’ll know once they open him up.

Bauer is a garbage human, and while reasonable doubt would’ve been very difficult to establish–as is the case in virtually all “he raped/she said” cases–which end in conviction less than 1% of the time, by the way–he choked the woman unconscious, and beat her while having sex with her unconscious body (which makes consent rather difficult to provide).

I can’t believe there’s a guy in the Dodgers clubhouse who wants that POS back on the team, and for good reason.

He was a walking red flag before they signed him–and not just because of the curious spin rates that suddenly appeared–and the less that’s said about him, the better.

And because the Dodgers were/are still on the hook for his ludicrous salary, it didn’t allow them to fortify the staff in a way that most Dodgers fans could rather obviously see was necessary.

And hey, those are the breaks.

But don’t bring your Bauer revisionism here, Rando…..

Urias, Gonsolin, Anderson, Kershaw, May, Heaney – only the Dodgers could lose Walker and still hit the ground running.

Walker was very spotty this season when healthy but the Dodgers were relying on him to be one of the big dogs in the post-season. This is a huge blow because playoff baseball is very different. Better hitters, more pressure, etc.

Dodgers also didn’t make a move for a starter as they hoped May and Buehler would return and rest of rotation stayed healthy. I still don’t trust Gonsolin in the playoffs. Kershaw is still a question mark too in the postseason, health and performance. Heaney still a health risk and can’t put too much faith in his numbers as it’s such a small sample size. They’re desperately hoping May can ramp up and be ready for the playoffs. Right now only Urias is a sure thing. Big blow for the Dodgers. They may have to outslug the opposition to win playoff games.

How many innings does Gonsolin have left? Isn’t he over his max ever?

Heaney might revert to his averages.

      Is Kershaw’s back an issue?

Until May is back to form – he isn’t. Not saying he won’t be.

So there is still Urias and Anderson.

Heaney last outing 3.0 2 ER – not the best form?

Not sure why he only pitched 3.0 but that isn’t promising in itself.

He entire season is a combination of short samples so all I’m saying is you can’t say he has some sort of “form”.

But yes, it’s not as though he can be counted upon, as he still profiles more as a bulk-innings guy than someone who faces a deGrom or Scherzer in October…..

“Facing DeGrom” when talking about a pitcher is always crazy. Hate it when they talk about pitchers facing each other. Heaney will never need to bat so he’ll never really face DeGrom. Leave that to the lineup. Who’s on the mound if/when DeGrom makes it that far is obviously not going to be Heaney anyways.

Don’t know of any innings limit for Gonsolin, but as this is his first year as a full-time starter for the entire season his innings pitched are up significantly. He’s already more than doubled his highest single season innings pitched number. Would think that the Dodgers limit his innings down the stretch. Dodgers will be fine from depth point of view but the quality is where it can really go down in the playoffs, as they really don’t have any proven starters with playoff experience. It’s Urias and then May. Gonsolin bombed in playoffs.

No way. Too much of a gap. Dodgers have some depth in the rotation, but when you get to playoffs, it’s down to a three man rotation, and one start by a four starting pitcher in a 7 game series. Buehler was penciled in as one of the big 3 starters for the Dodgers. And he was the potentially dominant starter that you need for the playoffs. Right now the Dodgers don’t have any. Urias is probably the closest thing. If they can get May humming by post season they’ll be okay. But you have to think there will be some rust.

I thought if they didn’t say what procedure they did, it meant the surgery was more of the let’s go in and see how bad it is type. Won’t know more until after they see the extent of the damage. Interesting, as soon as they labeled him the ace, the rock started rolling downhill as far as performance and health, shame.

Who cares if they are in first. Look at the Astros last season. It is fair to argue if they had Verlander and/or McCullers last season in the playoffs, they probably would have beat the Braves in the WS. This injury is very similar in terms of impact (mostly with McCullers). The Dodgers always pull miracles, so they will probably have another nobody come up soon and pitch like a cy-young.

Tyler Anderson, Andrew Heaney are two careers they’ve turned around recently. Lux, Will Smith, Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin are homegrown talent they’ve developed.

I don’t agree with your assessment at all. Teams like LA, ATL, Houston are just better at developing talent than other franchises.

2020 was legit. While it did provide more rest for the pitchers, it applied for all teams. Also, the way the Dodgers have been so dominant in the regular season you don’t think they would have made the playoffs if they played a full 162? Laughable if you don’t think so. And then they had to play that ridiculous best of three series with the Brewers which is a lot more random. Any bad team can beat a good team in a three game series, let alone a playoff team. So, I really don’t understand those that say 2020 was not legit. Only the haters believe that.

“a lot more random” — that Brewers team was historically bad re playoffs, not even a 500 club. Also LA only had to play one more game than the wild-card series Nationals did the previous year.

It’s hilarious when people make that extra game seem like some kind of insurmountable gauntlet. Teams only played inside their divisions in 2020 also, plus a few games vs the AL counterparts. Just a silly season all around.

          Swept Pobres
7 games in 7 days vs. Atl and won series 4-3 coming back from 0-2 & 1-3.
Won WS, in 6, against only other team in MLB to win at least 40 games. Should have won in 5.
Since wildcard inception until this coming playoffs, teams had to win 11 games to be WS champs. 12 if they were the WC.
Dodgers won 13 postseason games in 2020.
But, yeah, tell me more about how illegitimate their title is. Just try to spell it right, though. Okay, Champ?

So, like I said, they won 1 more playoff game than WC teams in years past. Big whoop. Doesn’t change the basic fact that they skipped 102 games. Imagine the NBA or NFL crowning a team after 37% of a season. Even the bubble Lakers had played most of their regular season first.

The ‘19 Nationals & ‘21 Braves would’ve MISSED the playoffs entirely in a 60 game season. Think baseball is maybe, just maybe, more about the grind of 162? This has gotta be a prank.

Dude, you realize there were also no off days in each series, right. The 2019 nationals would have gotten thrashed in 2020. It was the ultimate test of the quality of a team. Had to have all 5 starters pitch or have pitchers go k on n short rest. No home games. It may not have been an insurmountable gauntlet, but it was just as hard or harder a postseason.

And if you think it was illegitimate because more teams for in, I guess there won’t be any more legit championships.

It’s only on online forums where you get a bunch of sour grapes complaining about the Dodgers championship not being legitimate. I’m no Dodger fan but they won playing by the same rules and same structure as every other team in the league. I guarantee that every baseball fan that has called it a fake championship wouldn’t say that if it was their team that won.

MLB put more playoff teams to make sure that the strongest teams didn’t get short-changed by the short season. I think all of us fans of strong teams had some concern but if you look at the teams that made the playoffs they were the usual suspects and stronger teams. So, the playoff format actually was more difficult with the more random three game series. If you can’t see that you don’t know baseball very much.

Walker was the team’s worst starter this year. Mitch White was slightly better than him.

Don’t tell this to people that think the Dodgers are done. It’s gonna be more fun this way come November.

Strong chance Mookie demands a trade this off-season- he hates it there (terrible contract anyway so not all bad for the Dodgers).

Why did he sign instead of going to FA, If he hates it there? He should have signed with the Yankees.

Because even though brian cashman is the only other GM stupid enough and with enough resources at his (garbage) disposal to have given him that contract (your point is right that cashman would have given it to him. No World Series in 13 years and counting and only 1 World Series in the past 22 years, despite staggering payrolls- very often the biggest payroll in MLB- year after year after year. cashman should have been fired years ago), the Dodgers were able to offer it to him 1st and Mookie hates playing in the NE even more than he hates playing in LA- understandably because of his experience with the disgusting bigots of Boston. He has quickly become disillusioned with LA.

Why are you trolling people? Mookie LOVES playing in LA and LOVES playing for the Dodgers even more. Stop drinking and using drugs. For everyone’s sake.

Unfortunate, I was hoping for a Baltimore-LA Dodgers tilt in October.

Is there a pitcher out there anywhere that can get through his career that doesn’t get major hurt or have some major elbow problems? This is absolutely incredibly ridiculous. Players have always got hurt but it’s time to realize something is definitely wrong nowadays. These guys are pulled after 5 innings and STILL can’t stay healthy. Gotta throw 99 mph and have 27 strikeouts a game. Gotta love it.

almost like the human arm is not designed to throw a baseball 100 MPH 70 times a game, every 5 days, for 8-9 months of the year or something

Yet the risk of injury is worth the 43M a year you can possibly earn at age 38. Is it really that hard to understand why guys risk their health? Are you that naive?

I don’t know why you had to say all that. I was talking about the incredible amount of injuries. That’s all.

You complained about velocity. I explained why it’s being constantly pursued. It’s money. Simple.

If anyone thinks these guys aren’t trying to maximize earnings as much as possible for their extremely short careers, they are naive. Not just you

I “complained” about the nonstop injuries. The velocity that you speak of was sarcasm on my part. It’s like if a pitcher can’t throw 98 mph with a 5000% strike out rate they won’t cut it in the statcast world. No kidding the players want to maximize their value. Who would have thought? My comment was about the nonstop ever increasing injuries in baseball. INJURIES! THAT IS THE SUBJECT!

The jealous haters are out in droves tonight. To all you haters, even with this news, they’re still the favorites. And if he misses next year, they’ll still be the favorites again.

Walker wasn’t Walker very often this year. Wish they could have come to a conclusion in regards to the surgery sooner but that wouldn’t have made much difference. Going to have a major effect on his contract year.

If Walker Buehler played for Detroit, there would be a lot of “You should have traded him when you could” posts.

Anyone that gets some satisfaction from seeing a player being injured is quite disturbed, mostly Mets fans who turn up when Braves players are injured, however there seems to be more of them going by some of the mentally unstable comments on this thread. Classless. You aren’t a baseball fan when you like to see players injured, no matter how much you hate a particular team.

So far, I haven’t heard if it’s Tommy John surgery or not. Seeing Dustin May back in the dugout is good to see. With his skillset, he’ll strengthen the pitching staff.

And you won’t, at least until after the procedure. The doctors aren’t even sure what he will need yet.

The Dodgers won’t have Buehler and Kershaw in the playoffs. All that money and the marquee names every year and nothing to show for it.
