Mets Place Luis Guillorme On Injured List

By Steve Adams | August 15, 2022 at 4:22pm CDT

The Mets are placing infielder Luis Guillorme on the 10-day injured list due to a groin strain, the team announced. MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported the diagnosis and the potential 3-4 week recovery period that Guillorme will need shortly before the team made it official (Twitter link). Once Guillorme recovers from the injury, he’ll need some time to build back up and go out on a rehab assignment, so he could be on the shelf as long as six weeks, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweets.

There’d already been some speculation about top prospect Brett Baty joining the Mets to make his big league debut in place of Guillorme, but manager Buck Showalter quashed those rumors in meeting with reporters today. Neither Baty nor Mark Vientos are viewed as options to take Guillorme’s spot on the roster at this time, DiComo tweets.

The loss of Guillorme is tough for the Mets, whose infield mix has thinned out a bit recently. Eduardo Escobar isn’t on the injured list but has been battling oblique discomfort. He’s in the lineup tonight, but the veteran switch-hitter is limited to batting left-handed for the time being. J.D. Davis, meanwhile, was traded to the Giants prior to the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

Guillorme has been solid on both sides of the ball in 2022, batting .283/.355/.357 while taking a career-high 289 plate appearances. He’s offered next to no power but has also shown strong bat-to-ball and plate discipline skills, evidenced by a career-low 13.5% strikeout rate and a sharp 10% walk rate.

It’s not yet clear how the Mets will handle filling Guillorme’s spot on the roster, though Showalter indicated that someone is on the way to take that spot, specifically mentioning a need to add a player who can cover some middle infield work as needed, as well. (Guillorme is the team’s lone backup to shortstop Francisco Lindor.) Speculatively, the Mets have both JT Riddle and Deven Marrero as veteran options in Triple-A Syracuse, though there’s been no indication from the team that either is being selected to the MLB roster.

Guillorme isn’t the only player the Mets will be without for the time being, either. Showalter indicated that catcher Tomas Nido is away from the club due to illness, which has prompted the Mets to recall catcher Michael Perez from Triple-A. Perez, acquired from the Pirates in late July, will make his team debut if he gets into a game while Nido is unavailable.

Luis Guillorme has silently been one of the more valuable Mets and has been covering up Eduardo Escobar’s deficiencies. LOL Eduardo Escobar who can’t hit especially LH or play adequate 3B defense and right now needs to be IL’d as he can’t hit RH or even play sub defense. Two horrible FA Mets signings Escobar 3B and McCann C where the Mets have two huge holes along with middle RP.

Baty’s fielding percentage is lower than any third baseman’s at the major league level. I.e. if he were to start today, he would have a lower fielding percentage than any starting 3b in the league.

New or dumb fans don’t understand baseball is played on both sides of the ball. They just look at batting stats and wonder why the team isn’t winning.

new or dumb fans rely on fielding percentage as their only defensive metric. Baty is average or better in every one except fielding percentage. Can’t commit an error on a ball you can’t get to.

        Fielding percentage? Is this 1990?

Baty is more than adequate defensively and he’s been a great hitter in the minors. I understand why they don’t want to bring him up yet, but I would. He’s a far better option than Riddle or Marrero, who are both awful hitters.

Or they won’t – and an October pennant race isn’t the right time to discover if they are capable or not. Baty’s only had a couple dozen AAA plate appearances. Plus – can you tell me how well Baty has hit against the top 20% of pitchers in AA or AAA and not the 80% who will never sniff MLB? As a comparison, Gregg Jefferies was called up from AAA in 1988 at age 20 but also with 540 AAA plate appearances and a meaningful sample size.

-Baty is almost 23. A big difference between that and 20 years old like Jefferies.

-1988 is almost 35 years ago. Baty wasn’t even born until 11 years after Jefferies got called up. The game changes. I’m not sure how Jefferies is even relevant t the discussion.

        Mets team BABIP – .303

        Braves team BABIP – .299

Sooo, almost no difference. The only team between the Mets at 6th in the league in BABIP and the Braves at 8th in the league is the Chicago Cubs.

And literally every team has to use the ‘Manfred Rule’. It’s not an exclusive rule that only the Mets get to use.

So please stop with this nonsense you put out there on every single thread until you can back it up with a single, solitary stat. Your act is tired.

Because they hustle on every play while defenders are making lackadaisical plays. They also don’t strike out and make a ton of contact so the ball is in play much more frequently for them to be able to hustle.

Other teams striking out 20 times a game doesn’t make the Mets “lucky” it makes them disciplined. Other teams half-assing it down the line doesn’t mean the Mets are “lucky,” it means they run hard. Other teams half-asleep in the field doesn’t make the Mets “lucky.” They play extremely fundamentally sound baseball and the team as a whole has a very high baseball IQ.

If your team isn’t hustling as hard or working at bats or making more contact maybe that’s because they’re not as good as the Mets?

When they do it repeatedly, it’s not luck, it’s skill. The Mets remind me so much of the early 90s Braves. They have dominating pitching and play small ball. They don’t crush the ball, but they make good contact. They capitalize on every single opportunity. Sometimes it feels like luck, but they’ve done it all season. It’s not luck.

“ Know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It’s 25 hits – 25 hits in 500 at-bats is 50 points. There’s six months in a season, that’s about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week – just one – you get a ground ball with eyes, you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week … and you’re in Yankee Stadium.”

Alderson needs to go. Eppler needs to go, Steve Cohen needs to clean house in the front office ASAP. Please hire someone with a clue. While the Mets have gotten good results this year, the entire front office process has been flawed, from the draft(not signing 3rd rounder). the trade deadline(not getting a lefty reliever, overpaying for platoon bats), and now the way they are dealing with(read:blocking) their top prospects. I don’t see how you can look at the Braves have success with much younger prospects in the majors and yet keep Vientos and Baty down in favor of the Gosuke Katohs and Deven Marrero’s of the world. I understand the Alvarez situation because he’s freaking 20 and catching full time in the big leagues is hard, but even if Baty or Vientos aren’t ready defensively at 3rd, they are better than putting free outs in the form of Marrero or whoever.

What a weird take for a team 35 games over 500.

Every deadline bat has exceeded expectations so far. The v/r platoon is mashing and Naquin has been as well.

The third rounder was a known financial reach with parada falling to 11. Would you have preferred a slot or underslot pick at 11 and passing on parada for the third rounder who you probably can’t even name? Do they get a comp pick for the unsigned third rounder next year?

Your inability to understand the development process is a personal problem, rather than an organizational one. Here’s one hint re your thoughts on the Braves: survivorship bias

I’m not actually understanding the assumption that Brett Baty is definitely a better option than Marrero or whoever. Do you think Jared Kelenic has been a better hitter than JT Riddle to this point?

Hitting .177 is a better reason for keeping Alvarez down than “catching is hard.”

I legitimately don’t think you’d be satisfied with anything the front office would reasonably do. Because you have weird expectations.

Yes, the Mets get yet another comp pick for not signing Sproat. It’s still the same bad draft process from last year, every other team manages to get pre-draft agreements and sign all their top 10 round picks. Parada fell unexpectedly, I get that, still doesn’t mean you draft a guy you know you won’t be able to afford. Bad process.

Alvarez hitting .177 is irrelevant, his OPS is still over .800, he’s doing fine in AAA and would do fine here, his defense is what needs work.

And yes, Brett Baty is lightyears ahead of Deven Marrero, who has no business being anywhere close to a major league roster. .630 OPS in Independent ball. I’ll say that again. .630 OPS in independent ball. At 31 years of age.

I don’t have an inability to understand the development process. I have an inability following the Mets development process, because it follows no logic and hasn’t for years. It’s the same old, mismanaged organization it’s always been, and the MLB team’s success this year doesn’t invalidate that. Sandy Alderson is a terrible executive, and Billy Eppler’s track record isn’t great either.

The Mets are still a horribly run ballclub, getting a rich owner didn’t change that. Change will come with new FO folks.

Seriously, the Mets one of the rare teams who are playing like a world-class team but top to bottom they have players who are not in the top 5 in any position (other than their top two pitchers). As they say, better be lucky than good – the Mets are the embodiment of that. However, as someone said above, as long as they win, who cares. I agree!

Relax. I would love to see Baty get a taste. He is on fire at the plate. However, let’s see how this plays out this week. The team has handled much larger loses than this to date. Let’s let Baty get that power stroke going at AAA and install him at 3B in Flushing in 2023. No reason the panic over Luis G.

Is Baty better than Katoh, Blankenhorn and Merrero? Absolutely no doubt in my mind. But having him properly groomed for the eventual promotion makes a lot of sense. Many (including me) balked at Vogelbach and Ruf. This management team has performed very well and each move has proved effective. Let the professionals handle this

Besides, we may just get LUCKY this week

Sorry, but I’d rather the random internet commenters calling for the heads of Eppler, Alderson, and Cohen running the show. “Professionals,” what a joke!

First place with a well stocked farm is just bad process. Inexcusable. Should have had several layers of starting caliber redundancy for Luis Guillorme, obviously and in hindsight.

so you logjam 3rd and/or have Baty sit on the bench as a pinch hitter every other day? Do you think Marrero is a starting 3rd baseman??? No he is a utility guy used to give the starters a rest and cover other positions such as 2nd for your banged up 2nd baseman, 3rd for your banged up 3rd baseman, and SS for someone that has played damn near every game.

How is Baty’s glove at short and 2nd? Can he make the turn double play? If all you want is a pinch hitter maybe every other day because the mets dont pinch hit much from what i have seen and slow down his development go for it. Especially against your biggest rivals in your next few games. Lets ruin him like the mariners are doing to Kalenic or so many other mets prospects.

What’s the point of having depth in AAA (Vientos) if your worried about bringing them up. They had no qualms in 1988 when they brought up Gregg Jefferies and threw him in the middle of a tight race. He played great until he got cocky the next year.
