Pirates Acquire Jeremy Beasley

By Mark Polishuk | August 2, 2022 at 5:30pm CDT

The Pirates have acquired right-hander Jeremy Beasley from the Blue Jays just prior to the trade deadline, with Toronto getting cash considerations in return.  Beasley has been assigned to Pittsburgh’s Triple-A squad.

The 26-year-old Beasley has a 5.84 ERA over 24 2/3 innings in the majors, appearing in parts of the 2020-22 seasons with the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays.  While Beasley cut back on the control problems that hampered him in 2021, home runs have plagued the righty during his brief career — Beasley has allowed seven homers over his 24 2/3 IP as a big leaguer.

In the minors, Beasley has had a lot more success, including a 3.39 ERA over 327 innings at the Triple-A level.  Since the Jays landed him from the D’Backs in another cash considerations deal in April 2012, Beasley’s strikeout rates have shot upwards, topping the 30% threshold in both of his seasons with Triple-A Buffalo.  His problems keeping the ball in the park have still continued throughout an otherwise strong 2022 season with Buffalo, but clearly the Pirates must feel they can perhaps correct Beasley’s home-run tendencies.

From the Jays’ perspective, Beasley was something of an extra depth arm for the bullpen, and this trade opens up a 40-man roster spot for Toronto’s newer additions.  The Jays landed Whit Merrifield, Mitch White, Zach Pop, and Anthony Bass in today’s trade action, reinforcing the bullpen and adding a former All-Star in Merrifield to the position-player mix.

Poor guy, any other day and him getting moved could have been his chance to shine with write ups and evaluations but he’s totally getting lost in the shuffle of everything that happened today.

Astromule-I don’t follow your team but I saw on this site that your players have a bongo drum in the dugout that someone beats before every pitch. Is that true?

Could be worse places to go as a guy on the fringes of a playoff team’s 40 man. He’ll get more runway here than he would in Toronto, and maybe show what he’s shown in AAA there – ERA in the low 2s and K/9 around 12 with good control numbers.

Toronto fans will say some nasty things about him but I think there’s a good portion of every fan base with a very narrow lens and likes to pick on edge of roster guys who aren’t immediately good.. He has decent enough stuff and command. Has been used in multi inning roles and I really think he’d play up in a more traditional reliever role. He can fool hitters. Today, people were talking about how awesome so many relievers are and how their teams needed to trade for them to be playoff forces. Forgetting that many of them were late bloomers who toiled in pro ball for a long while like Beasley is doing now. It’s easy and safe to bet on failure in baseball. But sometimes it’s kind of fun to look for the things that might make a player beat those odds. Beasley has some traits.

Kamkid- Your’s is a real nice writeup showing knowledge and sensitivity.I hope that you are right.Unfortunately, most of these type of guys fade into the sunset as they sometimes have to impress very quickly.

Yeah. I think he’s not out of runway though. Still optionable through next season. I guess it depends on how much roster turnover Pittsburgh expects. A few years of collecting prospects so they must have some rule 5 considerations.

It was groundbreaking 3 plus weeks ago when they also paid cash for Yohan Ramirez from Cleveland. Twice in less than a month is … I don’t have the words. Bob must have gone through his couch cushions and found more change than expected.

I feel like Jason Kendall was brought in to the organization to be the next manager. He’ll spend this year and next working with the prospects in the minors, and then when most of the top prospects start to get called up by end of next year, he will come along with them.

I am totally dismayed that the pirates didn’t DFA tstusugo
, van meter, underwood. I’m guessing they couldn’t get much for Gamel marisnick and Newman. But to keep these obsolete veterans and keep the young guys down is idiotic. Even the two they got for the Cardinals they sent to Indianapolis. Then they send Castillo down. Puzzling. They better get rid of these bums soon

One word describes why they refuse to bring up young talent
      Nutting
      Cheapest owner in baseball.
Doesn’t want to be on the hook for the remainder of Yoshi’s $4 million dollar salary
Doesn’t want to start the clock for arbitration on the younger players either

        @TheMan3

you really think Nutting makes baseball decisions?

If he did Cutch would most likely still be in Pittsburgh. One of the few times the front office went to Bob about a baseball decision was when the front office wanted to trade him,

Nutting owns the team, therefore makes all of the financial decisions
He’s said as much in older interviews

I find it very hard to believe whether Nutting cares if they dFA Josh Van Meter.Nutting should of course approve all major free agent signings.I do not doubt that they have kept Yoshi ,for example, and Polanco last year, longer for financial considerations. But there is a limit to any GM’s patience if the owner has to approve every transaction.

Gamel and Newman still have control, while they’re not over whelming players they’re not doing too bad. Only real problem with them here is that they’re taking playing time away from others prospects you might want to see.

But yeah the other guys after it was clear they were not getting anything they should’ve been let go.. wouldn’t be surprised if they are in the next couple weeks to free up 40man spots.

Joe- Newman is their current best hitter so he needs to stay until the young players including Cruz prove that they are major leaguers.
They may be able to peddle Gamel via waivers as they need to open up an active roster spot for Suwinski.Gamel is a decent player but they have a lot of outfielders now who they need to find out how good they are.
Give BC a few days to waive Van Meter and Yoshi. They May need to keep the latter though as they do need someone to play first base.
Underwood is underwhelming and he may need to be waived or traded to open up an active roster spot for Bolton.

Diego Castillo is hitting .206 with a OPS+ of 71… He deserves to be in the conversation with Van Meter, Tsutsugo, etc… He’s young, but he’s not a vital piece of the puzzle.

JAson- Castillo definitely needed to be sent down for more seasoning.I do not think that he had much time in AAA.I think that they want him to be their utilityman.I would let him play there the rest of this year and see how he does.I do think that he has some upside.

Now that the deadline has come and gone… Shelton has no business playing Newman, Gamel and van meter, who are all in the lineup tonight. Just because they are on the roster doesn’t mean he has to play them. And I agree that Kendall will be their next manager. But next season if not this season. Another season of Shelton will set the rebuild back. He can’t handle a pitching staff and for sure he can’t manage lineups. Something like 96 different lineups. He’s garbage

Good pickup really. wasn’t really working out up north, Ben knows of him from his time in the Jays.. Take a look at AAA, bring him up and see if it sticks.

He is a reliever now, but I’d start him a few times to see what happens in AAA, though he’ll likely still come out of the pen.
