Pirates Activate, Option Nick Mears

By TC Zencka | August 20, 2022 at 10:32am CDT

Pirates right-hander Nick Mears has been activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A, per Kevin Gorman of Tribune-Review Sports (via Twitter). Mears recently completed a rehab assignment as part of his recovery from right elbow surgery. Now that Mears is back, the Pirates’ 40-man roster is full.

As part of his rehab, Mears made 18 appearances in Triple-A, pitching to a 6.89 ERA over 15 2/3 innings. Before the elbow injury, the 25-year-old right-hander made his debut with the Pirates in 2020 over four outings. He took on a more substantive role last season, making 30 appearances and pitching to a 5.01 ERA/5.66 FIP across 23 1/3 innings.

With an option remaining, the Pirates can easily keep Mears in Triple-A for now as he aims for more consistency on the hill. He will be a depth piece for the rest of the season, though with closer David Bednar hoping to return at some point, the bullpen already may be overcrowded.

Did anyone get bumped from the roster for this? Was a 40-man spot cleared when Austin Brice was DFA’d?

Acura- I thought that Yerry went on the 15 day but it was the 60 day so they must have anticipated Mears coming off the 60 day.The question becomes will he stay on the 40 man roster if he keeps on pitching like he has been in his rehab.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t get called up at all unless someone else gets hurt. I’d imagine Oviedo gets called up before him to get some work although it looks like they’re trying to stretch him out as a starter.

Mears is one of the obvious DFA candidates at the end of the year along with Yajure (pitching poorly at AAA) and Godoy (seems to only be on the roster now in case you need a catcher) and Park (too many ahead of him on the depth chart now). 50/50 on Cedarlind coming off the roster. Kranick keeps his spot.

There are a couple of other candidates to dfa too but I agree with you.I hope Yajure can turn it around as I think that he has some promise.
