Rangers To Select Cole Ragans

By Darragh McDonald | August 3, 2022 at 5:45pm CDT

The Rangers are going to be starting left-hander Cole Ragans on Thursday, reports Jeff Wilson of rangerstoday.com. The southpaw will be making his major league debut. He is not currently on the club’s 40-man roster, meaning a corresponding move will be required.

It’s been quite the journey for Ragans, who was selected by the Rangers with the 30th overall pick in the 2016 draft. He had a nice season in the minors in 2017 but then required Tommy John surgery in March of 2018, wiping out that entire campaign. After rehabbing for over a year, he received the terrible news that he would require a second Tommy John surgery in May of 2019. Though he might have been theoretically able to return to a mound in late 2020, the pandemic wiped out the minor leagues that year, meaning the former first-rounder didn’t throw a pitch in an affiliated game for three whole seasons.

Finally able to return to action in 2021, he split his time between High-A and Double-A, putting up a 4.35 ERA in 80 2/3 innings. This year, he’s made ten Double-A starts and eight in Triple-A, with a combined 3.04 ERA, 29.3% strikeout rate and 8% walk rate.

Baseball America considered him one of the top Ranger farmhands in the earlier parts of his minor league career, though he slipped off the list during his extended absence. He return at the start of this year at #24 and jumped up to #11 at the midseason update.

If he’s able to find success at the major league level, there should be an opportunity for him to stay. While the Rangers have gotten strong results from Jon Gray and Martin Perez this year, the rest of the rotation has been flimsy. The other pitchers to make seven or more starts this year are Dane Dunning (4.30 ERA), Glenn Otto (5.50), Taylor Hearn (5.35) and Spencer Howard (6.82). Though there has apparently been some talk of a Perez extension, he’s currently slated to reach free agency at the end of the year. Furthermore, Gray is on the injured list and won’t return for about 4-6 weeks.

Looks like MLB changed the balls up after the deadline. Totally different ball in the Mets game today

Carrying way more. Could just be the weather in Washington but there’s already been a HR by Alonso that normally isn’t out and routine fly balls that carry way more than normal

Baseballs tend to carry much more in the summer in the Mid-Atlantic. I don’t see any conspiracy here (especially with a sample size of one).

Why would they choose the trade deadline to make a change? Doesn’t the All Star break make more sense. Me thinks you are reaching.

No reason to keep Charlie Culberson. Free him up to sign with a contender. Please don’t cut somebody of value.

Sborz or Santana would be good choices

You could easily pick 10-15 Rangers

They have to remove a pitcher, can only carry 13 on active roster

That’s not fair. Doesn’t MLB know the Texas Rangers have no pitching?

My vote would be Garrett Richards or Jose Leclerc. Hopefully neither are in the Rangers future plans.
Just for laughs, Garrett Richards has a 9 million dollar club option for next season.
Jose Leclerc has a 6 million dollar club option.

And I’d still cut Culberson. I’d like to see Bubba at some point. The kid deserves it.

I’d be OK with that, but don’t think it’ll be them bc gray is out. U cut or send down a starter gotta bring another up. Who u gonna bring, keuchel or winn?

Interesting note, Cole Ragans would probably be on another team had the Rule V draft not been cancelled. Bubba Thompson also. Texas did not protect them. Saved by the Baseball Strike!

Texas también necesita una nueva frente oficina. Chris Young merece una oportunidad, sin que los payasos se interpongan en su camino.

Texas spent a boatload of money on semian and seager both good not great players but outside of Gray ignored pitching. I know they get a couple of studs in the minors coming but they better get some pitching this off-season

You know they signed Martin Perez as well. Goal was to have several of the young guys step up for the other three spots. Unfortunately every one failed.

I think they counted their eggs before they hatched and thought Kershaw was gonna sign and give a hometown discount, then he didnt

I find it mind boggling that they didn’t trade for a pitcher. I’d rather have a young controllable starter that’s had success in the majors than any prospects that haven’t done anything yet. Let’s face facts, very seldom do prospects work out. Expecially if they are with the Rangers. There’s no reason why Jung shouldn’t be in the majors in the next week.

And he’s missed most of 3 seasons 2020-22. It’s gonna take him a few weeks to get his timing and everything working. And no reason to even rush him. We’re out of playoff chase and Duran is doing fine

Dane Dunning has been good in spots, ERA is a little high but he has pitched some good innings.

His 1st big league outing will be against a (finally) fully loaded White Sox team, who crush lefties, and have won 2 in a row. Which means bet against the White Sox cause, they can never seem to get out of their own way with obvious advantages this year.

They need to dfa Calhoun, Culberson and Miller. Give the prospects all the opportunities possible. We should care about the record. If anything we get another top 10 pick. The most important thing should be seeing what each of the young guys have to see who can help next season.
