Red Sox Acquire Taylor Broadway From White Sox

By Anthony Franco | August 30, 2022 at 10:09pm CDT

The Red Sox announced they’ve acquired minor league reliever Taylor Broadway from the White Sox. He’s the player to be named later in this month’s trade that sent reliever Jake Diekman to Chicago for catcher Reese McGuire.

A closer at Ole Miss, Broadway was selected by the White Sox in the sixth round of the 2021 amateur draft. A college senior, he signed for $30K but has quickly progressed to the upper minors. The right-hander made just 15 appearances in A-ball before getting a bump to Double-A Birmingham. He’s spent most of this season there, pitching to a 4.74 ERA across 49 1/3 innings. While it’s not an especially impressive ERA, the 25-year-old has struck out a strong 33.9% of opposing hitters while issuing walks at only a 6.4% clip.

Broadway was eligible to be traded even after the August 2 deadline, as he’s never occupied a spot on a 40-man roster. As MLBTR’s Steve Adams explored this month, players who have spent the entire season in the minor leagues and haven’t been added to an MLB 40-man or injured list at any point this year are still eligible to be traded. Broadway will report to Double-A Portland and adds an upper level bullpen arm to the system.

As for the big leaguers involved in that swap, the Red Sox have gotten the better results through the first month. McGuire is hitting .396/.412/.500 through 16 games while taking the strong side of a catching platoon with Kevin Plawecki. Diekman has allowed six runs (five earned) with 13 strikeouts but eight walks in 8 1/3 frames with the South Siders. McGuire will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason; Diekman is under contract for $3.5MM next season and has a $4MM club option or a $1MM buyout for 2024.

Spanky for Dickman alone has been well worth that trade.

Looks like Gunnar Henderson is getting the call up. Henderson or McCarthy from the Diamondbacks?

Taylor Broadway a guy who doesnt even have a picture on baseball reference and has struggled significantly at all levels – take me back to 2018

Lots of people, especially prospects, don’t have their picture in Baseball Reference. That doesn’t mean anything. I would have been happy if they took Diekman and his contract for free.

@Drake – He was actually quite good in 2021 across all levels of the White Sox farm teams that he was assigned to. He definitely took a step back this season but it was his first time in AA. He is basically a ‘free’ arm for Boston so welcome to Portland, ME! Perhaps he can turn the corner and add some depth to the system.

What do expect to get back for a terrible reliever on a bad contract?

At least the Sox got the better end of that deal so far.

I’d say which ones but obviously the Red Sox got the better end of this trade. Terrible deal for the White Sox though. Didn’t care for the move when it occurred.

I wonder if he’s related to the former White Sox drafted player Lance Broadway?

Had no idea McGuire was hitting that well with Boston. He’s certainly beating the odds.

Broadway doesn’t seem to be much of a prospect but I had no idea there was a PTBNL involved in the Diekman deal to begin with. It certainly can’t hurt the Red Sox as their bullpen pitching depth in the minors is quite thin. Maybe he can figure things out and eventually become the 12th or 13th man in the bullpen. Stranger things have happened.

Agreed. I think getting rid of Diekman and the $4.5M attached to him while getting something in return was surprising.

And a bit of a coup for Bloom, who managed to undo his 2-year contractual mistake on Diekman with a net positive, as I expect the team will go with McGuire and Wong splitting the catching duties in 2023 and get a good result from that pairing.

I said the same thing before Taylor re-injured himself, and Hernandez blew up. I didn’t see any fit for Diekman, and thought if we moved him in exchange for nothing, it would be a step forward. Taylor & Hernandez haven’t worked out like I hoped, but I am not missing Diekman one bit.

    Broadway at Double A:
13.9 K/9 = He certainly knows how to miss bats
58 hits in 49 inn = He gets hit hard, when he isn’t striking them out

An enigma for sure. But, certainly something that can be built on. He’s still better than a few of Portland’s relievers.

In the minors that might mean his ball does not have a lot of movement?

It’s hard to tell without having the velocity readings. His BABIP in AA was .413, suggesting he might be somewhat unlucky, or they could simply be hard-hit balls.

Bonus, Hahn has Diekman locked in for his 36 yo season as well…so he has that goin’ for him, which is nice. Hahn just can’t stop stepping on rakes.
