The Reds have acquired catcher Austin Romine from the Cardinals for cash, per a team announcement. Romine had been designated for assignment but didn’t last long on the DFA wire, quickly getting snapped up by the Reds.
Cincinnati will be Romine’s third different organization of the 2022 season, after he first signed a minor league deal with the Angels in March. He was released in June but caught on with St. Louis on another minors deal a couple of weeks later, when the Cardinals were in need of some extra catching depth when Molina first went on the IL. Overall, Romine has played in 14 total Major League games with his two teams this season.
Romine now joins another team trying to make do in the wake of a notable injury, as Tyler Stephenson could miss the rest of the 2022 campaign after undergoing surgery for a fractured collarbone. With Aramis Garcia also on the IL, rookies Michael Papierski and Mark Kolozsvary comprise the Reds’ current catching corps, and thus an 11-year veteran like Romine brings some needed experience to the roster.
Finally! A catcher.

Reds are taking the central now… with our farm system and adding Romine nothing can stop us.
The guy would be free in just a few days.
The cash could be 20 bucks for all you know.
And free to sign with anyone, not just the Reds.
Romine at bestbis a back up catcher. He’s always been terrible offensively but he’s a decent catcher. Was always better than Gary Sanchez behind the plate and anyone with eyes could figure that out
He will get some PT with Stephenson hurt but they needed a veteran backup long term anyway with all those young pitchers still trying to figure it out at the big league level.
Color me happy there is a sofa in here for two!
Never would have thought the Reds would buy anything today but this is another solid deadline move by them to help with the growth of the young pitchers especially with Stephenson out for most likely the remainder of the season.

Cano only cost the Braves $1. Romine may have cost the price of the plane ticket.
Maybe so, but still shocked if Bob footed the bill for the ticket.. Probably a bus ticket from St. Lou to Cincy is more like it
