Rockies Place Kris Bryant On Injured List

By Anthony Franco and Steve Adams | August 1, 2022 at 6:34pm CDT

The Rockies have placed Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot, per a team announcement. Infielder Alan Trejo has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in his place.

It’s already the third IL trip of the year for Bryant, who inked a seven-year, $182MM contract with the Rockies over the winter. The first season of that contract clearly hasn’t gone as hoped, although it’s worth pointing out that since returning from his second IL stint due to a back injury, Bryant has been on an absolute tear at the plate. Through his first 17 games with Colorado, the former NL Rookie of the Year and MVP hit .270/.342/.333 without a home run. Since returning from his back troubles, however, Bryant has raked to the tune of a .330/.398/.567 clip with five home runs and eight doubles in 108 trips to the plate.

That production is more in line with what owner Dick Monfort and general manager Bill Schmidt had in mind when signing Bryant to that massive free-agent contract, but there’s no getting around the disappointment in a trio of IL trips before the trade deadline has even arrived. That’s now seven trips to the injured list for Bryant since the 2018 season. In addition to the back strain that twice shelved him this year and this new bout with plantar fasciitis, Bryant has missed time due to a sprained finger and multiple shoulder strains. Dating back to the 2018 season, Bryant has played in just 469 of the 649 games played by his teams (72.2%).

That’s bad. McGwire lost almost two years to plantar fasciitis. We’ll see how serious of a case.

you must be in a wheelchair because if you have plantar fasciitis there’s no way you’re walking around and running I was out of work for 4 weeks with it so it’s nothing to laugh at

Probably sarcasm, but if not a bit of research shows the varying severity of plantar fasciitis. Thanks to getting it in both feet I got to see that difference first hand (foot?).

Hmmm. Look what happened with the Astros when they tore it down and built it back up and a lot of that through their farm. They’ve become yearly powerhouses ever since. The poor Mariners finally did the same thing and are on the cusp of being a real contender next year (and they are currently tied for the second AL wildcard). But you want to watch the once great Rockies wither year after year? That Bryant contract was one of the most foolish trades in the off-season. That’s not a move you make when you’re a distant 3rd or 4th in the division team.

And other fans need to stop telling everyone else what to do as if they know everything and can’t possibly be wrong. I am a PROUD Rockies fan and I will continue to be whether they win 100 games a season or 40 games a season AS LONG AS THEY TRY TO WIN. I wouldn’t be caught dead a fan of the Marlins, Astros, Cubs, Reds, Orioles, Tigers, or any other team that has intentionally broken down their roster in order to win in the future. I find that far more offensive than a few “bad” contracts dished out by Colorado or a few missed trades.

40 wins a season is not based on a team that wants to win. Losing players like DJ, Tulo, Arenado and Story is just like what you mentioned with the teams in your statement. I bleed purple too, but the FO is still not aggressive enough.

Say what you will, plantar can be a significant issue. I had it when I was younger, playing tennis and running. It really hurt. I finally figured out that the only way to heal it was by staying off of the foot as much as possible. Took months.

That said, a solid investigation of Kris’s career would have shown that he didn’t warrant this kind of contract, especially in the context of the recent personnel moves by the Rox. Too much owner weighting?
