Yasmani Grandal To Miss 10-14 Days With Knee Injury

By Mark Polishuk | August 21, 2022 at 1:25pm CDT

Aug. 21: The White Sox announced that further testing revealed “no acute damage to the ligaments, tendons or cartilage around the knee.” They diagnose the issue as “inflammation caused by the hyperextension of the knee” and say that Grandal should return to action in 10-14 days.

Aug. 20, 10:58PM: Grandal will be going on the injured list and Perez will be called up from Triple-A, manager Tony La Russa told reporters (including Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times).

10:27PM: The White Sox announced that Grandal left the game due to left knee discomfort, and the catcher is still being evaluated.

10:18PM: White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal left Saturday’s game with an apparent left leg injury after a play at the plate.  After Elvis Andrus singled in the seventh inning, Grandal was thrown out trying to score from second base, and seemed to hurt his knee on an awkward attempt to avoid the tag.  Grandal had to be helped off the field, and didn’t return to the game.

More will be known about Grandal’s status after the game, yet it would certainly appear as though the veteran catcher will miss at least some time.  Considering the calendar, anything beyond a minor injury could put the rest of Grandal’s 2022 season in jeopardy.

Grandal already missed five weeks due to back spasms earlier this season, and another significant injury would only add to a nightmarish year for the 33-year-old backstop.  Limited to 287 plate appearances over 73 games, Grandal is hitting only .202/.307/.258, career lows in all three slash-line categories.  His once-notable power has completely declined, with an Isolated Slugging statistic of only .056 (miles beneath the .211 ISO he carried over his first 10 seasons).  While Grandal still has one of the league’s best walk rates, his lack of other production at the plate has made him a sub-replacement player, with a -0.2 fWAR.

As rough as Grandal’s season has been, the White Sox won’t be helped by the possible loss of their starting catcher as the team continues to battle for a playoff spot.  Chicago dealt defensive specialist Reese McGuire to the Red Sox at the trade deadline, leaving Seby Zavala as the primary backup and now potential starter down the stretch.  Zavala (who turns 29 later in August) has posted big numbers at Triple-A this season and has an above-average 108 wRC+ in 142 PA in the majors this season, hitting .281/.329/.398.

Nick Ciuffo and Raudy Read are the only other catchers in Chicago’s farm system with MLB experience.  Neither are on the 40-man roster, and neither is Carlos Perez, a longtime member of the White Sox farm system who is hitting .259/.317/.448 with 17 homers for Triple-A Charlotte this season.  In the event that Grandal misses some of all of the season, the Sox would have to turn to one of these options, or perhaps seek out the waiver wire or minor league trade route to land more catching depth.

This actually makes the Sox better. He has been dreadful this year and yet outside Of injuries la Russa would pencil him every chance he got. Grandal needs to fully heal up and start fresh next year

Yup, he was a gamer for going out there and attempting to take reps while not being all there physically. Bad idea though. Sure they needed him in the lineup for balance and he still had a lot of great ABs, but just didn’t have the lower body strength to rotate and drive balls. Try as he might, agree its much better than he gets healed and right for 23.

Savala and Andrus should go the rest of the way from here. Not a lost season if Sox can just beat up the teams in their division 23 games. They have 18 games with O’s, M’s, Padres, Rockies, and Dbacks. Not a big task for their rotation and pen. Its , all about their defense which should be better with Andrus. Moncada and Harrison on the carpet now to produce. Fortunately TLR has kept them close, its up to the players to step up. Thank God we have Abreu.

Now we need Garcia, Sheets, Engel and Ruiz to go down so TLR can’t use them. Bring up the Neslony, Payton, Sanchez and any other pitcher that’s stringing together good numbers at AAA. I’ve seen enough of those 4 to know they are liabilities.

Grandal is one of the players on this team that losing him is not that much of a step back. Sure he can take a walk, but when you have no speed on the base paths that’s not really helping much. What I find interesting is, in the previous game, Jimenez being taken out of a game due to a ‘tweaked knee’ on a swing of all things, where Vaughn takes a shot to the face and walks to first with a busted lip. Jimenez was back in the lineup the next game, but why was he taken out in the end of the last game then? Its either the ‘want’ of the player or the inept conditioning staff….. Which is it?
Never mind all the swing and misses I see with this club when a 92 MPH fastball is thrown right down the middle of the plate.
This is what is maddening about this club. There are players that have the potential to be great, but its clear they need a manager that will push them (or at least find out of they are worth the hype and if not, get rid of them).. LaRussa is not that guy, he may have been that guy 10 years ago, but that was 10 years ago.

TLR hasn’t been able to manage as he wants. Hahn and KW want him to cater to the media hype of lazy players who don’t like stretching, preparing, or doing drills .
The players need to care for their health and show up ready. TLR can’t do it for them.

That’s a load of BS. LaRussa and the entire coaching staff have fumbled the ball big time.. I get there is the LaRussa fan club, but at some point people need to get over the delusion that he is the same guy that was managing 10 years ago.

Kopech pulled a hamstring today against KC because he didn’t get help stretching before the game, just a fact Jack. Its up to Kopech to be ready he has 4 days between starts. Nothing delusional about that. Jimenez pulls a muscle swinging a bat, how many games has he played. Only 2 Sox players have played 100 games this year. Check your delusional stats NRD1138

Delusional stats? Im sorry, whats their record? What universe are you in where they are doing well this season? Heck they have a losing record at home for crying out loud… What were many delusional fans prognosticating before the season? That they would run away with the division, and where are they now? In third, and only because the division is that awful. LaRussa is lucky that Francona (the real manager in the division) has no team or the Guardians would likely be running away with the division (heck Francona has no team and is in first.. what does that tell you?). If the Sox somehow make the WS, let alone the playoffs, it will be a miracle. The Sox are one of the most undisciplined teams I have witnessed in all of my years watching this team (next to Bevington and Ventura years, Id say Renteria, but they were clearly rebuilding). Poor base running, poor execution at the plate, poor fielding. The same guy making three errors in the game is out there the next day. Guys failing to drive runs in are still in those spots in the order.. Why? Sorry, I guess LaRussa doesn’t fill out the lineup cards each day? Are there players that are performing badly? Sure, but why are they out there? Bench em, get in their face, challenge them…LaRussa can do that, but is he really, not from appearances. ..and that’s just the glaring issues, how about his bullpen decisions and pinch hitter decisions. Now, if you want to think its unfair, go ahead, but the eyes don’t lie.

The White Sox did fire their trainer last offseason after all the 2021 injuries. This offseason Tony La Russa, bench coach Miguel Cairo, hitting coach Frank Menechino and third base coach Joe McEwing should all be candidates for the firing squad.

Yes, Im not sure what got into McEwing, but he had a penchant from trying to get his guys hurt at plays to the plate this season (when he is not thinking that Abreu and Grandal run like Engel).. Awful. Menechino… I mean, what happened? I see a league that made adjustments against this Sox team, but no changes in the way the Sox hitters approach hitting. I mean look I get that he is not holding the bat. but I have seen far too many Sox hitters watching pitches go down the middle for strike 1 and 2 only for them to swing wildly at pitches that were never going to be a strike the minute it left the pitchers hand.. Awful.. Do we even want to bring up the base running? How about the contact play I have seen work only a handful of times vs the majority of time where the Catcher is practically waiting to tag the Sox hitter out? I never thought Id say this, but bring Ozzie back and hope you see more accountability with him at the helm…

9 years 747 – 710 .513 winning pct. Then he insults the Cuban players by praising Fidel Castro in Miami while Abreu is defecting from Cuba. 5 seasons under .500 ball. 4 with Sox , last year with Marlins. Ozzie needs an English class to communicate.

Ozzie was 78-82 his last year with White Sox before he called the management cheap !

Weren’t you also the guy that said they would be in 1st place by the AS break, or was that someone else?
In any case, LaRussa is a shell of his former self. He may have been a good manager 10 years ago, but that was ten years ago. I mean this was a guy who put one of his own players into harms way last season because of a stupid unwritten rule (probably why these guys refuse to listen to anything he says now). However, IF, in the HIGHLY unlikely event (considering they lost to a doormat team like KC today and got utterly destroyed by the Astros in Chicago, 21-5), the Sox win it all this season, I will be the first one to get on here and admit I was wrong in the sense I was jumping to conclusions.. But, and Im sure much to your chagrin, I have no problem doing that, I have been saying all season I hope I’m wrong. I hope this team proves me wrong, but every time they show any signs of life they revert back to being themselves, the silly errors, the inability to drive runners in from 3rd with less than two outs, the comical base running mistakes….In watching Sox teams for over 30 years I can tell you when you see a pretender vs contender and this team fits no such contender billing, and haven’t even before this season started.
However, it works both ways.. If the Sox don’t even make the playoffs, or do and get laughed out of them (like last year), will you have the stones to get in here and admit LaRussa, and the rest of the coaching staff, stink?!

You sure can, its called ‘accountability’. Its also the thing that has been lacking for the whole season. I mean look at LaRussa, he is practically sleeping the dugout! Yeah, Im sure players see that and go “Man I’m motivated to go out there and give it my all’. His Post game comments, he looks (and sounds) like he is still sleeping. Ozzie put it best in a post game, sometimes the compliments work, but sometimes you have to get into the players face and challenge them. That obviously is not occurring here..

The Sox are a joke! They should be embarrassed to have bad teams consistently beat them. Injuries haven’t helped the cause, but you know who uses injuries as an excuse–losers do. Guys like Eloy and Robert are made of glass.

The overall team attitude all year has been, “Don’t worry about us, we’ll be fine” or some other BS. No you’re not. You’re about to get bounced from the playoffs by one of two mediocre teams (the G’s or Minny). Nothing like watching either of those two get swept by the 6th seed. Then again if the Sox by some miracle win the division, they will probably meet the same fate.

The Sox have had so many golden opportunities slip through their fingers. I actually hope they miss the playoffs. They need reality to slap them in the face. It’s too bad, they have good players like Abreu, Vaughn, Cease, but too many look like they are just collecting a paycheck. And I don’t even want to talk about Tony.

Agreed, Poor execution on this club, and no accountability… Wasted seasons by Cueto too, man imagine if the Sox did not have Cueto?! Aside his awesome performance on the field. He played ‘manager’ the other day called out his teammates AND they actually listened and played well for a bunch of games. That actually woke up LaRussa enough to have a ‘chat’ with his ‘leaders’ on the club.. Then they promptly lost the next game 21-5…. I guess we cannot talk about the ‘golden calf’ (LaRussa) though, his followers will get mad…
