Yankees Place Andrew Benintendi On IL, Designate Anthony Banda

By Darragh McDonald | September 3, 2022 at 4:10pm CDT

The Yankees announced a series of roster moves today, with outfielder Andrew Benintendi heading to the 10-day injured list with right wrist inflammation. Outfielder Estevan Florial was recalled in a corresponding move. Additionally, right-hander Ryan Weber has been selected to the big league club, with lefty Anthony Banda designated for assignment.

Benintendi, 28, left last night’s game after appearing to injure himself on a swing. Last night’s X-rays came back negative, but it seems the ailment is enough that the Yanks will keep him out of action for another ten days at least, as they try to figure out what’s going on. “Just not sure, like, where we thought, may not be injured,” Boone says in the video shared by Marly Rivera of ESPN. “So, they got to get more CT scans. I just got briefed on it a little bit so I really don’t have much for you other than he is going on the IL but it’s a little inconclusive right now exactly what.”

Given that uncertainty, it’s hard to know exactly how serious this will be for the Yankees. However, even a minimum absence could have an impact in this late stage of the season, as there are just over four weeks remaining on the regular season schedule. Acquired from the Royals prior to the trade deadline, Benintendi is having a solid season at the plate, one of his best showings in years. His .302/.371/.397 battling is 21% better than the league average hitter this year, as evidenced by his 121 wRC+. That’s just shy of his career best in that department, as he registered a 123 wRC+ back in 2018.

The Yanks will have to do without his production for at least the next week and a half, with the results of the continued testing still to determine the next steps. Until then, they will have to get by with an outfield mix consisting of Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Oswaldo Cabrera, Marwin Gonzalez, Tim Locastro and Florial. Giancarlo Stanton could theoretically be a factor as well, though he’s been used exclusively in the designated hitter role since returning from his own IL stint. Despite running away with the AL East for much of the season, the club has been in a rough slide lately, seeing their lead over the Rays slip to just five games. They would surely love for someone in that group to step up and make up for Benintendi’s absence in order to help keep them in the driver’s seat down the stretch.

Banda, 29, previously pitched for the Pirates and Blue Jays earlier this year, in addition to a brief stint in the minors for the Mariners. He signed with the Yankees on Sunday and made two appearances in pinstripes. The first one went well enough, as Banda entered the club’s game against Oakland on Sunday with one out and no one on in the fifth. He surrendered a walk sandwiched between two outs to finish the inning. His second appearance came last night and didn’t go nearly as well. With the Yanks down 5-0 to the Rays in the eighth, Banda entered with two men on and faced six batters, walking three of them, hitting another and giving up two singles. That leaves with a 40.50 ERA through two thirds of an inning as a Yankee, though a 6.75 ERA on the season overall. Despite that unfortunate ERA, he does have a career-high 22.2% strikeout rate on the year. The Yankees will place him on outright waivers or release waivers in the coming days, though Banda would have the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency, by virtue of having been previously outrighted in his career.

As for Weber, 32, he’s bounced on and off New York’s roster all year long, generally faring well in brief stints with the big league club. He was first selected in June but was designated for assignment the next day. He cleared waivers, elected free agency and re-signed with the club on a new minor league deal. That same cycle happened two more times, making today the fourth time he’s been selected to the roster, never staying in the majors more than about a week. He has a 1.17 ERA in 7 2/3 innings over those sporadic showings, in addition to a 3.86 ERA in Triple-A for the year. His control has been excellent at both levels, as he has a 3.8% walk rate in the bigs and a 3.0% rate in the minors, much lower than the 9.1% average for an MLB reliever this year.

Lindsey Adler of The Athletic tweeted word from Boone about Benintendi’s IL placement before the moves were officially announced. Bryan Hoch of MLB.com relayed the Banda-Weber swap before the official announcement.

Finally, a Yankees fan who gets it. Coaches get too much credit for winning and way too much blame for losing. This is on the players. Boone is putting his best available players out there (remember, relievers can’t pitch every night), they just aren’t performing.

Just look at Gabe Kapler. They called for his head in Philadelphia and he got fired. Then he leads a rag-tag Giants team to a 107-win season last year and wins Manager of the Year in the NL. Now with a sub-.500 record, they are calling for his head in SF. While managers can impact a game to a degree, the players win and lose games. The Yankees players have failed since the All Star break, plain and simple.

Joe,Obviously the players have the most to do with it because they play the games.

However, cashman put this team together in his usual half hearted matter, with over the hill ,older players, injury prone, or players he could get on the cheap ,as far as length of contract goes ,or prospects he’d have to give up. This is the end result. It’s the perfect storm of ineptitude. and let’s not forget Boone, who when he gets a chance to contribute to a loss is happy to do it. He still does not know how to manage a bullpen after all these years, always leaves his pitchers in too long ,hoping to squeeze one more out of them, and by the time he gets around to removing them it’s usually too late. This has happened time and time again over his tenure. Do you think he would’ve learned something by now.

You guys are correct, however Cashman is directly responsible for failing to make necessary acquisitions for positions many thought would be problematic and made unnecessary trades that definitively hurt the team. They were also playing Hicks everyday, after extending him to begin with, playing Torres, playing Locastro, and pitching terrible relief options, ie, Banda.

I believe where Boone has demonstrated consistency in poor management is: he does a fine job when they’re winning (obviously), but cannot turn the team around in any season when they start this predictable slide. And, Cashman put this roster together using analytics, he shouldn’t be surprised that so many players regressed to their predictable statistical norms, particularly when we were so lucky regarding injuries in the first-half aberration performance.

Clipper I’ve never been a Boone fan. Even when they’re winning, I don’t see it as anything Boone has done right and when things go bad, he’s useless. As far as Cashman goes he’s got his faults but overall he did a decent job remaking the team in one offseason. I never thought the team was as good as the first half of the season but I don’t think they’re this bad either. The Monty trade is inexcusable.

          ======================================
I appreciate you mentioning this. Too many people ignore the math. Most times, a good stretch is nothing more than a couple of hot players, weak schedule, and one-run wins. In one-run games:

          Apr 2-2
          May 7-2
          Jun 8-3
          Jul 4-6
          Aug 3-8

You add those one-run losses to the fact that a couple of hitters have regressed to their career numbers, and a few injuries, and you can see the difference.

When anyone asks me about the RS, I tell them it is simple. In 2021, we had 3 starts from SPs that weren’t in out top-7. In 2022, we’ve had 35.

And this is the comment of the day. The NYY are on pace for 97 wins. I think every pre-season Yankee fan would’ve been happy with 97 wins. And if the season had happened in reverse, with the NYY playing .750 in the second half rather than the first half, Yankee fans would’ve made Boone the MOTY.

And I can’t recall any Yankee fan liking the Monty trade, like literally 100% were either agnostic or hostile about it.

JoeSays & JoeBrady: Both of you have excellent points. Brady, your one-win, one-loss position is very accurate and is being played out right in front of us Yankees fans.

JoeSays, yeah, I agree, Cashman did an excellent job with retooling the team and maintaining a playoff roster. He’s also made some excellent trades (like Trevino / Holmes / Tallion)

The problem is that I think that’s his ceiling, minus 2009; but we don’t have Jeter, Posada, A-Rod, or Mo anymore, and they were the difference for that team.

It’s a great point you make nonetheless, it’s just he needs to spend (over the CBT) to fill the needs of the team or someone better needs to comprise a championship roster, imo, because I just don’t see Cashman with the ability to build a viable, sustainable championship team (a true dominating team) within Hal’s budget, and with the ability to keep the farm strong without trading key assets like 2016 all over again. He did a great job this past offseason, but many of us said then, he went too far one way… He needed to spend the requisite funds or prospect capital to acquire true two-way talent to take the roster to the next level.

Cashman inherited the Core Four of the 90’s dynasty Yankees (Jeter/Mariano Rivera/Posada/Bernie Williams) from the previous GM. Cashman is simply not the genius some people think he is. He should probably spend more time doing baseball stuff and less time repelling down skyscrapers and having multiple affairs on his wife which led to a expensive messy divorce.

At this point they should consider themselves extremely lucky if they win the division but based on them having the worst record in the AL since August 2nd it’s not looking too good!

What is the Yankees should find to be “EMBARRASSED” and “UNACCEPTABLE” is their FO, their choice of manager, the amateurish trading deadline moves, and finding that they’re no more knowledgeable about building an MLB contending team than their fans are.

This is what happens then the MLB bylaws change so the Yankees and Red Sox can’t just outspend other MLB franchises for 3 decades, and have to compete with other organizations on a semi-level playing field.

          TrumboJumbo;

I didn’t think they would get to the WS in 2022.

For years I’ve been writing here about the Yankees history. Particularly how after winning 10 AL pennants in 12 years they utterly collapsed around 1965 and were a mess until a bit after George Steinbrenner bought the team and free agency came about. What caused that collapse was primarily that MLB put in a draft – prior to that the Yankees could just buy the best minor league players. They could not compete with many other franchises on a level playing field.

The steady modification of MLB bylaws the past 20 or so years regarding drafting, penalties for going over a pseudo-salary cap, etc, has caught up to the Yankees and Red Sox. Their fans (as well as their local baseball media and the national baseball media) don’t know it – they think those franchises are immune.

The building of rosters and running of games has changed. The Yankees are – and have been for years now – well behind the curve. One that doesn’t understand how the game is administered and played has to wonder how the Rays – not just with the roster they opened the season with but the one they now have after an absurd amount of injuries – can possibly be in contention?

This may well be just the beginning of a stretch for Yankee fans that resembles the period between the mid-1960’s and the mid-1970’s.

P..S. A similar thing is in process with the American economy. “Those that don’t know history are doomed to repeat it” is a truism.

What hurt the Yankees was the implementation of the First Year Draft in 1965. The Yankees, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Mets were against it but the MLB voted for the First Year Draft rule.

Actually the Yankees won 14 pennants in 16 years. The reason that they dropped so quickly in 1965 was that all of their superstars got old and unproductive all at once. The institution of the draft could certainly have been a factor for lack of wins in the early 1970’s however.

Agree with you about the Sox not being in the same boat as the Yankees.

To me the difference is that Mr. Henry has a background in analytics from running his investment companies before he ever bought into MLB (same as Mr. Cohen with the Mets). Economics and business for some time now had been all about numbers. Colleges have been teaching it that way for maybe 20 years now.

Hal Cashman do not have that background. They keep trying to pick that up on the run, but because they don’t have an overview they keep lunging this way and that every year or two as they “fill holes” as opposed to having a comprehensive strategy and letting players develop.

To their credit the Sox brought in Mr. Bloom – who gets knocked in the comment section here by 95% of Red Sox fans every time there’s an article on the franchise. And of course they have been far more advanced in using analytics as well as associated processes for MLB franchises since Mr. Henry took over.

Where I wasn’t clear is that the national baseball sports media as well as local sports media in NYC and Boston live on a narrative that they created – MLB revolves around the Yankees and Red Sox. The media keep expecting them to sign the top 4 FA’s each year, and make one-sided trades to get established players from teams that gave them long-term contracts they now can’t afford, in return for an average MLB player and a few so-so prospects. That age (from the late 70’s to maybe the early 2010’s) is over.

Hal needs to find out if David Stearns has an opt-out after the season……

If so he need to give him the most generous FO contract in MLB, allow him to hire whomever he wants, give him a large budget and promise to stay away from anything to do with Baseball Ops. Then he needs to go the fans and explain that they won’t be a WS contender in 2023, and probably not in 2024 as well…..as if they’ve been a serious one more than once or twice since they last went to the WS 12 years ago.

I doubt that will happen. Yankee baseball fans need to realize that their legendary baseball team is no more dominant than the Knicks, Jets or Giants have been for the decade or so. Professional sports leagues give franchises equal opportunities now.

Just because the Yankees do not dominate any more does not mean that mlb “ gives franchises equal opportunities now”.The three other sports do,but not baseball. One WS winner in the last 30 years for small market teams prove that out.And it cannot be said that it is because they are all poorly run.The Pirates and Reds in general may have been, but the Royals and Twins have been managed decently over that period. The Rays,A’s,Brewers, and Guardians have all been competitive in a non competitive environment.
The small market teams do not have the vast financial resources that the large market teams do and can’t afford more than maybe one superstar and those are the players who form the basis of the great teams.
I think that to think otherwise is quite naive.Money runs baseball. It is much more of a business now than a sport.

Bad contracts added to the current roster by Cashman through trade, extension or free agency:

    Hicks
    Stanton
Cole — overpay in money and years without accounting for Spider Tack although it was known a year earlier; a fastball pitcher not likely to age well
    LeMahieu
    Donaldson

That’s a lot of bad contracts for one GM.

Instead of us having to hear “leMahieu is going to struggle for the rest of the year with his toe,” we should be hearing who’s replacing him in the lineup. But, no. He’s being paid too much to sit. Cashman will forfeit the season rather than admit that he wasted ownership’s money. Two years in a row of playing an injured, unproductive LeMahieu, and next year he’ll be 35 years old. And the Ninja added an automatic out in Donaldson for $50M. That’s more than the entire payroll of the A’s and Orioles.

But the Yankees lead the AL in attendance, so Hal’s content.

And Boone says: “We lead the league (meaning the AL) in scoring.” Right. And you’re 10th in the AL and 20th in the majors in scoring since the break. That was then, this is now.

It would suck, but it wouldn’t be one of the two worst collapses in MLB history. The Yankees only lead the division by 4 games on Sept. 3.

The Phillies had a 6.5-game lead in the NL on Sept. 20, 1964 (before divisions and the Wild Card were created) and lost the lead by a game and didn’t make the playoffs.

The Mets had a 7-game lead in the division and a 1-game lead in the NL on Sept. 12, 2007. They didn’t even win a Wild Card and didn’t play in the postseason.

There are several other cases that were worse collapses later in the season than where the Yankees are now.

But, yeah, it would suck. For the record, I said long ago that I didn’t see this as a championship team. The first half was a mirage because it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and a team has to be built to go all the way. This team never was, and Cashman weakened them at the trade deadline. The only hope I see is if he surprises me and gives some rookies a chance and they play out of their minds. I don’t expect him to do that. He seems to think aging veterans are the “safe” play.

Was this an odd injury in terms of swing mechanics? Benny hurt his right wrist which is at the bottom of the bat for him. Which hand/wrist experiences more stress when swinging, the top or bottom? I always thought the top did most of the work when swinging and the bottom was kind of along for ride as a guide. I guess every swing is different. I think the bottom wrist may twist more when swinging, so maybe it does get more stress.

It is about 50-50 and can vary amongst hitters. Both wrists start the swing with top hand as power/lead, once you get down to the hips some guys one hand it (Trea Turner, Justin Turner) or you can follow through with both hands. Different player to player. About 50-50 all in all though.

With Rizzo hurt too, they’re wanting for power from the left side. The righty-heavy lineup last year was easy to pitch to, and so is this one. When Rizzo comes back, I’d like to see them sit Donaldson and LeMahieu, who’ve been useless at the plate lately, move IKF to third base where supposedly he can field better, put Peraza at short, and let Florial, Judge and Cabrera handle the outfield, with Stanton occasionally in right, if the strain isn’t too much for him.

Same crap, different day. Hicks in left field today, IKF booting a routine grounder to make Montas throw more pitches, Judge, the one-man offense, homers in the first. And hitless Donaldson hampers Montas from pitching inside by starting a needless kerfuffle instead of being grateful he got on base for a change.

“In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled outfielder Estevan Florial from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Benintendi’s absence could spell increased at-bats for Oswaldo Cabrera, Aaron Hicks or Tim Locastro, at least in the short term.”

Aaron Hicks or Tim Locastro? How about, for once. giving Florial enough AB’s to show something? I hope Hoch just misspoke and Estevan isn’t going to get the same treatment as usual: ride the pine and then get sent back down.

I only really look at BMI and IP to know whether a team will maintain performance. BMI predicts injuries and IP predicts overuse. The Yankees are full of oversized players (news flash: baseball is not a contact sport, size is meaningless). They also overuse their bullpen every year and this year they overused their rotation. The injuries are not over, that is for sure. Now, they still have to get passed by another team to lose the division. That is in no way a lock to happen. But the outlook is not too rosy.

You’re right but you’re not going anywhere, cheap Steinbrenners not gonna pay their salaries while not working for the Yankees, and while Cashman doesn’t yet have a contract I don’t think, but he and Steinbrenner are best buds ,so he’s not going anywhere either. As long as they’re making money, so Steinbrenner can finance his other interests like soccer leagues, they are not going anywhere.

Not looking very promising for Yankees now, @ 4 game lead. Boone will be fired if NYY loses lead and is a wild card. Gotta move out the dead wood hitting players / errors, and get changes for ‘23: Donaldson, iKF, Hicks, Chapman … get a decent #3 starter. Gleyber needs a retooled swing.

And MLB soils their pants handing today’s game to the Yankees. So they will win the division thanks to the fixamatron dumpires ever expanding strike zone. It is really quite pitiful. The eighth and ninth saw more gift strikes than a bowling lane with the gutter down the middle.

Mets lost again and the Braves won, huh?

Actually, if the gutter were down the middle, it probably wouldn’t lead to a lot of strikes.

I think the only way we can get rid of Boone, if Cashman tosses him into the yes network so they don’t feel they’re losing too much money since they still have to pay him ,and then we can actually get a competent manager. That’s the only way that it happens, or they give them some other role in the organization where he can’t do too much harm.
Because as we see, carp a fill in since boon is thrown out of the game, did a better job of managing the later innings than Boone ever would have.
