The Rays closed out the season on a sour note, dropping their final five games but still holding onto the third and final Wild Card spot in the American League. They’ve now formally announced their roster for their Wild Card round showdown against the AL Central champion Guardians — a best-of-three series where all games will take place in Cleveland. Ace Shane McClanahan will take the mound against 2020 Cy Young winner Shane Bieber in Game 1 today. Here’s how the rest of Tampa Bay’s roster shapes up…
Right-Handed Pitchers
- Jason Adam
- Shawn Armstrong
- Pete Fairbanks
- Tyler Glasnow (Game 2 starter)
- Javy Guerra
- Corey Kluber
- Drew Rasmussen
Left-Handed Pitchers
- Jalen Beeks
- Garrett Cleavinger
- Shane McClanahan (Game 1 starter)
- Brooks Raley
- Jeffrey Springs
Catchers
Infielders
- Jonathan Aranda
- Vidal Brujan
- Ji-Man Choi
- Yandy Diaz
- Wander Franco
- Isaac Paredes
- Harold Ramirez
- Taylor Walls
Outfielders
Right-hander JT Chargois, who missed most of the season due to a pair of oblique strains, is a notable omission from the group. The right-hander returned to the roster in late August and tossed 18 1/3 innings of 1.47 ERA ball down the stretch, including a 0.79 ERA and 10-to-1 K/BB ratio in his final 11 1/3 innings. The ostensible final bullpen spot will go to righty Javy Guerra, however, perhaps in deference to the near-99 mph average velocity on his sinker and near-98 mph average on his four-seamer. Guerra tossed 9 2/3 shutout innings to close out his own season, though he did so with a more troublesome 6-to-5 K/BB ratio.

Armstrong on….Chargois off? Really? I’d love to know the reasoning behind that decision.
Yankee Clipper
My guess is: analytics. Probably a deep-dive into how the two perform against their opposition’s lineup.

Shawn Armstrong SO:BB is good. The ERA is misleading.

I thought Harold Ramirez is an outfielder?

Sure wish sports gambling was legal in CA. Even I would throw $25 at both teams.
Yankee Clipper
Sports gambling isn’t? Forgive my ignorance to sports betting in CA, but isn’t virtually everything legal in CA? Kind of weird.
.
YC, Not anymore man. Anything fun is actually “illegal” here now. It was legal up till about 10 years ago if I remember correctly. On the ballot for November. Yeah its weird. They also don’t allow dice in Casinos in CA. Craps and Roulette are played with “cards” haha.
.
I should add, before someone chastizes me, it was legal “online” up till about 10 years ago. Never have they had physical sportsbooks out here that I can recall.

Wow, TB out very quickly. No sports betting in CA just saved you $25 that you can use to buy 3 gallons of gas.
.
I can get that much?? Haven’t got gas in a week….I thought it was $19 a gallon already. $8 a gallon feels like a steal.

I’m surprised Franco made the roster.

G-Man Choi! Always liked that guy.
