Mets Sign Omar Narvaez

By Anthony Franco | December 22, 2022 at 11:35am CDT

December 22: The Mets have officially announced the deal.

December 15: The Mets have dipped into free agency yet again, agreeing to terms with backstop Omar Narváez. It’s reportedly a two-year, $15MM guarantee that allows him to opt out at the end of next season. Narváez, a client of ISE Baseball, will make $8MM in 2023, leaving him to decide on a $7MM option for the following season.

Narváez, who turns 31 in February, heads to Queens after three seasons in Milwaukee. The Brewers acquired the lefty-hitting backstop from the Mariners during the 2019-20 offseason. Narváez had developed a reputation as a bat-first catcher in the Pacific Northwest. He’d hit .278/.353/.460 during his lone season with Seattle. That’s excellent production for a catcher, but his pitch framing metrics were well below-average.

The Brewers landed the #1 catcher they’d been seeking in that deal, although they likely didn’t foresee the scope of his production changing the way it did. Narváez seemed to make a concerted effort to improving his pitch framing numbers. He posted strong marks in that regard in all three seasons in Wisconsin, with Statcast cumulatively crediting him as 21 runs above average over the three-year stretch. That defensive uptick coincided with a drop in production at the plate, though, as he hasn’t managed to repeat his early-career offensive numbers.

Over his time as a Brewer, Narváez hit .233/.318/.350. He was average or worse in each season, including a lackluster .206/.292/.305 mark in 296 plate appearances during his platform year. The Venezuela native had a pair of injured list stints this year, missing time with COVID-19 and then a left hamstring strain. Even when healthy, Milwaukee deployed a more even split in playing time with Víctor Caratini, who marginally outperformed Narváez at the plate.

Narváez has solid contact skills, but a 22-homer season of 2019 now looks like the product of the very lively ball used that season. He’s only topped 10 homers in another year once, hitting 11 in Milwaukee’s hitter-friendly home environment in 2021. While he rarely hits the ball hard, he’s worked walks at a strong clip in each season of his career and strikes out less often than the average batter (aside from an anomalous spike in the abbreviated 2020 campaign).

It’s a bit surprising to see Narváez secure a $15MM commitment, particularly one that affords him a chance to retest the market a year from now. With Willson Contreras and Christian Vázquez off the board, he was the top remaining free agent backstop. Narváez has showed glimpses of offensive and defensive potential, although he’s never quite put the two together over a full season.

New York has been incredibly aggressive this winter, but they’d sat out the catching market. The Mets could’ve rolled things back with veteran James McCann as the starter, particularly since they have the glove-first Tomás Nido as a depth option and top prospect Francisco Álvarez in the wings. McCann has only a .220/.282/.328 line in 603 plate appearances since signing a four-year free agent deal over the 2020-21 offseason. Nido has never hit enough to be a regular, and the 21-year-old Álvarez still faces questions about his ability to handle the rigors of the position. The presence of Narváez doesn’t figure to stand in Álvarez’s way once the organization deems the youngster ready for a full look, though it’ll afford them some extra veteran security if he needs more time to hone his receiving and game-calling skills.

The Mets would presumably be happy to find a trade partner for McCann. With $24MM still due over the final two years of his contract, the Mets would surely have to pay down some of the money to offload the veteran backstop. They could keep the righty-hitting McCann to partner with Nárvaez in a loose platoon arrangement. Doing so might require parting with Nido, however, since he’s out of minor league option years. All three backstops would have to stay on the MLB roster or be cut loose, and that’s before considering the possibility of an Álvarez promotion. At some point next year, one of McCann or Nido seems likely to have changed uniforms.

Tacking on another $8MM brings the Mets projected 2023 payroll north of $343MM, per Roster Resource. The deal counts for $7.5MM against the luxury tax, since the player option is treated as guaranteed money when calculating its average annual value.

New York has already shattered the fourth and final tier of CBT penalization, subjecting them to a 90% tax on every additional dollar spent. The Narváez deal will cost them an extra $6.75MM in taxes, meaning the Mets are committing $14.75MM to secure his services for next year alone (in addition to the 2024 option). That’s likely a far higher price than any other club would’ve paid, but it’s the latest example owner Steve Cohen is unconcerned about spending when the front office presents him an opportunity to improve the roster.

Robert Murray of FanSided was first to report Narváez and the Mets were nearing agreement on a contract. Joel Sherman of the New York Post  first reported it was a two-year guarantee with an opt-out after 2023. Jon Heyman of the New York Post was first to report the $15MM guarantee and financial breakdown.

This guy was always getting a major league contract. This is a solid price for him. If you are going to spend 400 million you might as well spend 8 to get a good backstop. Guy can frame. Get max value out of that expensive rotation.

Not a Mets fan, and it seems fine. McCann sucks, and shouldn’t play for a contender. Nido has a great glove, but it plays better as a backup. Alvarez does not have a good defensive reputation, and it’s possible the team sees him more as a DH, and they have a lot of room on the roster there. Narvaez has been a top-10 catcher as recently as 2021, and can get back to being a true starter if his bat recovers even a little, so the fit isn’t too crazy

If starting Narvaez at catcher is an upgrade over McCann or Nido then it makes total sense. Any improvement is good. This whole “you have to double the salary for tax purposes” is a strange take, appropriate the total tax proportionately. If the Mets have a $400 M payroll and pay $100M in taxes, then Scherzer, Verlander and Lindor, making $120M are the cause of $30M of the tax. Narvaez at $8M is only causing $2M of the tax.

All this makes sense, but for the Mets, who are so far over the tax penalty that they have to double every contract, this move seems totally unnecessary.

McCann will be a fine backup Catcher or one to split the Catching duties if he can get with another team.

He not a guy that should be catching 5-6 games a week. The Mets misused him, then the fans and media jumped on him.

The Cubs would be a nice landing spot with him sharing the duties with Yan Gomes. He handles pitchers well and that’s what they’re looking for in a Catcher.

His salary is a bit high for a small market team – if it were lower the Rays, Brewers, Guardians, and Orioles would love to have him as a 3-5 in their starting rotations. I’m sure he’ll find a landing spot. Hope it’s with a contender.

But probably packaged with some prospect, unless it is Nido on the move. Tomas is second year arbitration, free agent in 2025.
If it is McCann, maybe he goes with Carrasco to some team who could use a catcher and starting pitching, like the Twins. Maybe an outfielder comes back ( Larnach? Kirillofd ? ) Include another pitcher to the Twins to get them to take on salary, like Butto. Just my thoughts.

I’d say Carrasco is probably about even based on his salary, age and pitching ability. Hes probably not getting 15 a year in free agency. Baseball trade values has him -8.6. McCann probably should be making league minimum or out of the league based on his last two seasons. Baseball trade values has him as -16.9.

But rather concerned with removing as many roster question marks as possible. Scherzer/Verlander are short term hi AAV. NYM upper minors is devoid of SP. 2024 Cano brutal contract is off the books.

Even bad catchers are in demand, which makes moving McCann probable. Lefty/ righty combo with Alvarez used as the righty dh and double switches late in the game. Having 3 catchers is a bonus. It also allows Alvarez to start the year in the minors with McCann going for a bullpen arm or single A prospect.

How many teams really carry three catchers? Really feels like there has to be a follow up move to trade. It’s just the head scratching math of $8M for Navarro vs $10M for McCann. If James is traded Mets surely will need to pay most of it down IMO.

This is a solid move to help out with the development of Álvarez. Mets are investing heavily into making sure he pans out. Álvarez doesn’t speak much English yet and he’s from Venezuela like Narváez. He’ll be an excellent mentor for him. They’ve also moved Glenn Sherlock from bench coach to be a special catching instructor for Álvarez. That’s why they moved Chávez to bench coach and hired another hitting coach. Plus he’s a clear upgrade from McCann, who’s almost certainly on the move now.

He’s been a good hitter in the past. An article on here proposed earlier today that Travis D’arnaud would be a non tender/buyout candidate in 2024 making 8m. Well, look what this guy just got and that seems pretty unlikely, if it didn’t already. Omar is a decent catcher but these contracts are so different now. Surprised they had to go to two years, unless they just wanted to.

@Rishi It aims to just maybe, barely reduce the tax hit in 2024, but mostly to pickup the ROI on the $7m deferred until 2024. There’s also this:

Given the tendency of old catchers to deteriorate even further, he’ll probably be bad in 2023, he’ll then pick up his 7m player option, and the Mets will deal him, picking up most but not all of his salary since as a catcher whose defense has improved a lot he’ll be worth $1m to someone. They won’t get anyone of value for him, but if he’s a little better than bad they might have to pick up only 3m-5m of the 7m salary, saving several million dollars on the $15m total.

Best case? Narvaez finds the fountain of youth as a backup and 3rd catcher (meaning he’s not completely awful), he picks up the player option nonetheless given the chance he gets an offer better than 1/7m for 2024 is small, and with Alvarez as their starting catcher they can deal Nido for a little something given he won’t be a FA until 2025, and go with Narvaez as their second-stringer.

—It may also be that Max would rather pitch to someone other than McCann, and the FO presumably also solicited JV’s opinion along with Quintana’s and Carrasco’s. I have no info on this at all, but if an experience pitching staff doesn’t particularly like him, unless the guy is a stud he’s often gone, so this is an expensive swap of Narvaez for McCann, with some of the potential upside described above.

There’s talk that Narvaez, like Alvarez a Venezuelan, will make a good mentor for the latter, but there are superb bilingual Spanish-speaking catching coaches who bring a lifetime of teaching the arts behind the plate for less than 1% of what Narvaez will be paid—in addition to the extensive FO, managing, coaching, and data guys already in place.

I’d rather have that professional on staff, the best in the business, focused full time on Alvarez for the comparative ‘pittance’ of $100k a year, 1/150th of what Narvaez ultimately receives.

Presumably there’s some upper bound to payroll, as well, so $15m to Narvaez is $15m not spent on an elite setup man (or two) or that didn’t go towards upgrading the rotation, especially the #3 slot, where the Mets weirdly preferred Sunday Pitcher Kodai Senga and now Narveaz by AAV (30m, total), to Rodon at 27m, presuming the latter was available for that amount.

And now there’s reliable talk of the Mets looking to deal Carrasco? They do know that Peterson, Megill, and Lucchesi combined haven’t been close to league average starters over their careers, with only one year (Lucchesi back in 2019, pre-TJS) you could reasonably call “adequate.”

There’s something approaching incoherence here. I doubt the FO even knows what it’s aiming for, something that crippled the 2022 club. Going all out to win the division on a team not built for it? We saw the result of that. Going all in on getting to the postseason then thriving over a 4-round postseason? This isn’t that team.

We’ll see, but to be this wobbly with more than $400m going to payroll for 2023 is a tribute to not really knowing what you’re doing since the end of October 2020.

You sure like to complain a lot about your “favorite” team Jack Strawb. Why don’t you go be GM for a team if you know so much about building a team.

You act this is a 3rd place team and not one that won 101. For the first time ever really this a team behaving and spending like a large-market team. Finally

This is a franchise that years ago traded The Franchise because they were too tight to pay him. Back then at the dawn of FA when there was a draft aside from a half-hearted attempt at Gary Matthews largely sat out FA until the ill-advised George Foster deal. Their frugal ways is largely why the 80s run didn’t continue (except for the anomoly of the 1992 spending spree).

The Mets were smart to sign Navarez. It was unexpected because they already had 3 backstops but it allowed them to dump McCann, add both better defense and some pop with the bat superior to banjo-hitting Tomas Nido (who is strong defensively). I’m not sure how a 110K translator would solve those problems. Most importantly they don’t need to rush Alvarez. They can work with him on his defense behind the dish, letting him develop at his own pace.

Be grateful instead of complaining and coming across as some M. Donald Grant disciple. You seem to want the Mets to operate more like Pirates and Reds. We finally have a ballsy owner who both cares and will do anything to put the best team possible on the field.

There are so many ways this challenging offseason could’ve went sideways several times-resulting in a team ill-equipped to challenge the Phils and Braves. Instead TPTB rose to the challenge and now we have a team potentially the best in MLB.

Yet here you are finding fault and complaining once again like you always do about why the Mets made the wrong moves and yours would’ve been better. Just give it up and enjoy the ride dude. I’ve been a fan nearly 50 years (I started this addiction young) and this is the most excited I’ve ever been about a Mets team. They have hitting to support the pitching in a way this team rarely does. This is a better hitting line-up than even the 80s Mets and probably their best ever eso. 1-6.

Your team wins 101 games and crushes it in the offseason-blowing up the hot stove-and instead of celebrating, being grateful still you complain. I don’t get it.

Completely agree, I understand everyone else in baseball hating the Mets since it’s normal in sports to hate on the powerhouse teams. The grin on my face when fans of other teams hate on us is fun, but the very few Mets fans that do complain is a real head scratcher. It’s almost amnesia-like, we were a laughing stock just 2 years ago. Everyone has an opinion and thats what we’re all doing here on the forums but some of these takes are straight up weird.
I say we can all respectfully agree to disagree and enjoy the games.

        Happy Holidays everyone

So, the Mets announced this as a one year deal. What’s up with that?

The 2nd year is only a player option. I’m not sure why they worded it the way they did in this article.
