Padres Sign Aaron Brooks To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | December 24, 2022 at 7:29am CDT

The Padres have added some pitching depth, signing right hander Aaron Brooks to a minor league deal, per Chris Hilburn-Treckle of Baseball America. Brooks was a free agent after being released by the Cardinals at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old pitched 9 1/3 innings for St Louis last season, working to a 7.71 ERA in that short stint. He worked mostly as a starter at Triple-A, making 13 starts and two relief appearances for a 5.56 ERA across 59 1/3 innings.

He’s bounced around the leagues a bit since making his debut for the Royals back in 2016, getting into big league games for Oakland, St Louis and Baltimore since. All told, he owns a 6.55 ERA across 180 innings in the majors. While that’s come with a respectable 6.8% walk rate, his 16.1% strikeout rate is comfortably below league average while his 44.1 HardHit% also sits the wrong side of the league average.

Brooks throws a low-90s fastball, and mixes that in with a slider and changeup, and an occasional curveball. He’ll provide a bit of minor league pitching depth for San Diego, and should he find some success, can be controlled for at least the next three seasons.

^ This guy doesnt read the article, skims to bottom and MUST comment. He also mails in votes of dead relatives AND shows up at precinct himself. This person is a below average contributor to society.

The only depth he provides is how much deeper in the hole your team will be in the games back column after he pitches.

This guy has to be worse than any prospect the Padres have. This kind of signing is not “organizational depth”, it’s blocking the path of a kid that may actually be able to help the team someday.

He provides deep depth for SDP #6 SP… behind Teheran/Avila/Groome/Wethers and Khner
By the time Brooks gets called up ..prospects Wolf + Cienfuegos + Brito will also be ahead of him.. so he comes in at #14 SP on the 2023 Depth Chart… AJP always playing 3 D Chess vs MLB stuck on Checkers… We Deep!

You seem to have missed the point. Whoever you have in AA or even A, is better than this guy. He provides nothing. No, I take that back. He provides whatever is LESS THAN NOTHING.

Is he a dud that pitches when the team is down by like 5 so you don’t waste real pitchers on those worthless innings?

In what way? They signed a guy that put up incredible numbers in limited at bats, 217 OPS+ and 15 HR in 128 at bats, and a pitcher who had a 3.60 ERA last season. That filled the two holes they had at the major league level.

Along the way they signed a ton of depth pieces to minor league deals. Teheran, Severino, Schrock, Dahl, Poppen, and this guy.

Spring training is still 7 weeks away.

Lacking a full time LF. Need another stretched out starter. Could use two bench pieces.

Add a Cueto to lengthen the rotation put.
Sign in the very least a Belt,Longoria or McCutchen for veteran depth/platoon in LF

Maybe re-sign Profar or bring back Voit who can DH play first. Dahl is a question mark. Tehran hasn’t been productive in years.

Severino,Poppen and Schrock are organizational depth.

Still a lot of work to do.

Tatis is the left fielder, Cueto would be great, Profar is overvalued…..

I would agree about Profar due to his inconsistencies at the plate. His defense is underrated. McCutchen off the bench is who I want until Tatis comes back.

Worth the risk, which there really isn’t any. Even if just one of them has a breakthrough year or rebound year, that would be worth it.

I remember when the A’s traded this guy to the Cubs for Coghlan, and Coghlan was all poopy face about it and played terrible for the A’s. He was really pissed off after the season seeing his Cubs win the WS that year.

I have a game-used Aaron Brooks A’s jersey that I got off the rack of other scrub jerseys at the Coliseum. It was cheaper than a new one, so I figured why not?
