Tigers Sign Kervin Castro To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | December 26, 2022 at 9:50am CDT

The Tigers have added right-handed reliever Kervin Castro on a minor league deal, according to his MLB transaction log.

Castro, 23, split time between the Cubs and Giants in 2022, tossing 12 1/3 innings of 10.22 ERA ball while striking out batters at a 19.3% clip against a 12.3% walk rate. It was a disappointing step back after a promising first stint in the big leagues back in 2021. That year, Castro threw 13 1/3 innings without giving up an earned run and showing above-average strikeout and walk rates.

Originally signed out of Venezuela back in 2015, Castro came through the Giants system putting up solid numbers. In 2019 he made 14 starts and pitched to a 2.66 ERA in Low-A. With no minor league baseball in 2020, Castro went straight to Triple-A in 2021 and began working as a reliever, pitching to a 2.86 ERA in 44 innings and earning a first call-up to the big leagues.

While the results in 2022 weren’t encouraging, Castro’s shown some promise in the past and is young enough that there’s certainly a chance he’ll find some form again. In any case, he’ll provide the Tigers with a bit of minor league pitching depth going into the 2023 season.

This really makes the off season a success.
Another Giants castoff that Harris hopes Fetter can make a pitcher.

Trying to return to the proper level of Castro’s on the roster. I would have rather seen Harold brought back.

Yeah, they need to cut ties with Miggy. Should have long ago. I absolutely love the guy, and appreciate what he did for the team. But, his lackluster attitude cannot be good for the development of this young team. He had the skills to “just have fun” on the diamond, but 99% of other professional baseball players have to stay laser focused. I cannot imagine how frustrating that is for Hinch and Co.

Why do they need to cut ties with Miggy? He is better than most of the garbage on the roster now. Who is he blocking? Zack Short?

Yes, he is blocking a position. There are plenty of players not signed, signed,-shoot even retired that make more sense for the organization then Miggy. Give him a clipboard and a whistle- I don’t care. You’re giving him $30m to block someone out there who is better.

Have you seen the Tigers roster? He was hitting .300 most of the season until he got hurt again.
His 5 homers tied him for 8th on the team last year. 3 of those players are no longer on the roster.

Yupp- I’m clueless for not being an advocate of pounding the round peg through the same square hole, 3 years in a row.

Maybe now, when he turns 40, everything will turn around and all those dividends will finally payoff. But come 2024, this team will forever be lost when the DH slot cannot manage to produce 43 RBI’s and 25 runs. Yupp, you can’t find those kind of numbers.

No, I’m hoping for health. After Harris cut the Castro’s, however, he hasn’t replaced them with players who are better. Right now, Zack Short and Andy Ibanez have the spots. You must see the team as they were last year, as to what they will be going forward. I see last year as an anomaly, and 2021 being more like what I expect. Even though Harris has done nothing to strengthen the team, I expect them to be better than last year.

I’m just saying Miggy will out perform better than half of what the Tigers have at this time. He will probably be on the weak side of a platoon at DH in 2023.
If they don’t want to pick up major league players then why not play Miggy? He is better than many on the roster now.

I, agree w. you Newman. When Miguel Cabrera is 60 yrs old, he’ll be able to smack line drives to RF. B’cuz he’s that naturally gifted a hitter. That’s not what the Tigers need. Chris Ilitch needs to say to Cabrera, “We thank you for everything you’ve done for our organization”! “And, to show you our appreciation, we want to help you end your career w. a chance to win”. “Where would you like to play”? Then allow the new GM to workout a trade?

Nor tell the world how valuable of a commodity are the remains of Miguel Cabrera. That was especially disappointing.

Not calling for Sam’s head. Mainly, wondering why he took this job. Scott seemed smarter than that, until he turned into Sam.

No, a blank check isn’t needed, but if they were going to do nothing, Avila could have done that, and then Chafin wouldn’t have opted out. Other than his trade with Atlanta, every player he’s added has been worse than what he’s cut. While I like Boyd as a person, signing him and Lorenzen puts more money towards injury prone pitchers. I would have preferred to see Brieske, Faedo, and Wentz, or even Hill given those innings to develop.

The Boyd and Lorenzen signings are valid arguments. But, is it that awful when looking at this FA class? They could put up fantastic numbers and possibly be involved in beneficial trades. Or, they could put up Pelfrey and Zimmerman numbers and be a complete bust, for one year. But, $18.5m/1yr for 2 competent veteran pitchers is not horrible when you see someone like Taylor Rogers signing $33m/3year.

A left handed closer for 3/$33MM is a pretty good deal. Wouldn’t work for the Tigers though. He has no history of injury. No fun without the extra risk factor.

So, if Boyd is a reliever that means what? It’s a bad deal, because it’s Boyd? Rogers, like nearly every 4+ year player has been injured too.

The Baez contract is not horrible. He would be making more money- & maybe for more years, if he was a fa this off-season. I didn’t think last year was the time to go “all-in”, but DET had a blatantly obvious hole at ss and made a gutsy move. It’s not horrible by any stretch. IMO, the Swanson, Siemen, Seager, and many other contracts are far more riskier.

The numbers after the decimal points do not have true numerical decimal value. With innings pitched they represent outs. You will get not ever see a .1 or .2 as .3 represents 3 outs or a full inning.
      So 10.2 + 1.2 does = 12.1. (.2 + .2 = .4 with .3 being a full inning so 1.1)

The Tiger’s have to clear the system, so no biggie getting these pitchers. If the farm system and regular Tiger’s don’t hit this year, with the rule changes, it’s bye bye for them. You have to play them to see, so there is no sense getting other teams castaway hitters when we’re loaded with them now.

2023 is looking to be a long painful year unless some offensive upgrades are done soon. Otherwise looks like Harris and Hinch are banking on huge turnaround seasons from all of the underperforming players (like every batter) from 2022. Anyway Get is fans are likely to hear about playing the kids and development all year and hope Illitch opens the wallet for the 2024 season. Yikes!!!

So Harris is on a mission to loot the G’nts of castoffs. Fulmer is still out there….they went through years of misery with him and now that he’s figured out how to stay healthy they ignore him? Bad moon risin….

With the trade of Jimenez, it would not be a bad move to bring Fulmer back, but then it will look even more like Avila’s team, not something Harris wants, I’m sure.

They can’t force Fulmer to sign, whose to say they haven’t offered?

Guys face it we are in full blown rebuild. Unfortunately, Chris should have fired Al after the talent purge of 2017 and had nothing to show for it. Instead Chris gave Al a contract extension. So here we are some five years later looking at another 3 year rebuild if not longer.

The way this guy is proceeding…..we might be saying the same thing then, too.

    One, “No Confidence”, vote here.
If the Reds can just dump a $24Mil contract (Mustakas) and no one offers or they refused to accept to take on that money in exchange for prospects, something is terribly wrong. Cam Collier costs $5Mil to sign. Trading him with Moose to get a team to take Moose is a great financial PROFIT for them.
THERE IS SOMETHING TERRIBLY WRONG WITH THE WAY THE MLB IS BEING RUN.

WE, THE FANS, PAY THE PRICE.

One,” No Confidence “, vote for the MLB, Chris Illich, Scott Harris, Manfred, Joe Torre, ect ect ect
