2023 Rule 5 Draft Results

The 2023 Rule 5 draft will begin at 1pm Central time today at the Winter Meetings in Nashville.

As a refresher, the Rule 5 draft is a way for players potentially talented enough for the big leagues but blocked by their current clubs to find opportunities elsewhere. Any players that were 18 and under at the time of their original signing and have played five professional seasons, and any players who signed at 19 years of age or older at signing that now have four professional seasons, who are not on a club’s 40-man roster are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft.

The clubs will draft in reverse order of the 2023 standings, with no club obligated to make a selection when it’s their turn. If they do make a pick, they will have to pay $100K to the team they select from. The selected players must stay on the active roster (or injured list) for the entire 2024 season or else be placed on waivers. If they clear waivers, they must be offered back to their original team. They cannot be optioned to the minors. Last year’s edition saw some key players change clubs, such as Ryan Noda going from the Dodgers to the Athletics and Blake Sabol going from the Pirates to the Giants.

The minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft also occurred this afternoon. Those players will not go onto the selecting teams’ 40-man roster. A few former major leaguers changed uniforms. They include 1B Seth Beer going from the Diamondbacks to the Pirates while the Yankees took RHP Kervin Castro from the Astros.

Astros Sign Kervin Castro To Minor League Deal

The Astros have signed right-hander Kervin Castro to a minor league deal, per a report from Evan Woodbery of MLive. The righty won’t be a factor in Spring Training since he underwent Tommy John surgery in June.

Castro, 25 in February, has 20 games of major league experience, suiting up for the Giants and Cubs. He tossed a combined 25 2/3 innings in 2021 and 2022 with a 4.91 earned run average, 21.2% strikeout rate, 9.7% walk rate and 40.3% ground ball rate.

He signed a minor league deal with the Tigers for 2023 and made 10 appearances in Triple-A before going under the knife and getting released. As mentioned by Woodbery, it was the second TJS of Castro’s career, as he underwent the procedure as a minor leaguer with the Giants back in 2017. Recovery from a second such procedure tends to be a little more challenging than the first, so it might be difficult for Castro to be a factor even in the latter half of 2024. Given those circumstances, it’s possible this is a two-year minor league deal, though that’s just speculation.

Throughout his time in the minors, Castro has racked up plenty of strikeouts though he’s also had control issues. He’s punched out 26.6% of the 815 batters he’s faced in the minors but given free passes to 10.8% of them. Once he completes his rehab, he could be a long-term depth piece for the Astros. He still has one option year and just a couple of months of major league service time.

Tigers Release Andrew Knapp, Three Others From Minor League Deals

The Tigers have released catcher Andrew Knapp and right-hander Ashton Goudeau, according to their respective transaction trackers at MLB.com. The club also announced to reporters, including Evan Woodbery of MLive, that pitchers Miguel Del Pozo and Kervin Castro have been released with each having undergone Tommy John surgery earlier this year.

Knapp, 31, is the most experienced of the bunch, having appeared in 325 major league games since his 2017 debut. He signed a minor league deal with the Tigers in January but has been in Triple-A all year. In 70 games at that level, he hit .253/.337/.397 for a wRC+ of 84.

The Tigers have used Jake Rogers and Eric Haase behind the plate in the majors this year, with both of them staying healthy and preventing the club from reaching into its depth. Donny Sands had recently been in Double-A, helping to cover for an injury to prospect Dillon Dingler. But Dingler was recently activated, freeing Sands to return to Triple-A and handle the catching duties there alongside Michael Papierski, which seems to have made Knapp redundant.

Goudeau, 31, has 32 major league appearances on his ledger with a 5.57 ERA. He signed a minor league deal with the Tigers in the offseason but has a 7.42 ERA in 60 2/3 Triple-A innings this year, striking out 16.8% of opponents while walking 10.7%.

The Tigers announced in June that both Del Pozo and Castro underwent Tommy John surgeries, with Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic among those to relay the info at that time. They will each be out of action for the remainder of this season and much of 2024 as well. The 30-year-old Del Pozo has a 9.82 ERA in 27 major league appearances, the last of which was in 2021. The 24-year-old Castro has a 4.91 ERA in 20 big league games, with his last appearance having been in August of 2022.

Each of these players signed minor league deals with the Tigers coming into the year but will now return to the open market and look for their next opportunities. Del Pozo and Castro won’t have any short-term appeal to clubs but could perhaps try to land two-year deals that would allow them to rehab and return late in 2024. Depth catching and pitching tend to always be needed somewhere, which could help Knapp and Goudeau find jobs in the near future.

Tigers Sign Kervin Castro To Minor League Deal

The Tigers have added right-handed reliever Kervin Castro on a minor league deal, according to his MLB transaction log.

Castro, 23, split time between the Cubs and Giants in 2022, tossing 12 1/3 innings of 10.22 ERA ball while striking out batters at a 19.3% clip against a 12.3% walk rate. It was a disappointing step back after a promising first stint in the big leagues back in 2021. That year, Castro threw 13 1/3 innings without giving up an earned run and showing above-average strikeout and walk rates.

Originally signed out of Venezuela back in 2015, Castro came through the Giants system putting up solid numbers. In 2019 he made 14 starts and pitched to a 2.66 ERA in Low-A. With no minor league baseball in 2020, Castro went straight to Triple-A in 2021 and began working as a reliever, pitching to a 2.86 ERA in 44 innings and earning a first call-up to the big leagues.

While the results in 2022 weren’t encouraging, Castro’s shown some promise in the past and is young enough that there’s certainly a chance he’ll find some form again. In any case, he’ll provide the Tigers with a bit of minor league pitching depth going into the 2023 season.

Latest Moves

  • The Pirates outrighted left-hander Cam Vieaux and infielder Josh VanMeter to Triple-A after the duo each cleared waivers, according to John Dreker of Pirates Prospects (Twitter link).  Vieaux and VanMeter were each designated for assignment earlier this week.  VanMeter hit .187/.266/.292 over 192 PA with Pittsburgh this season, while playing all over the field as a defensive fill-in.  Vieaux made his MLB debut this year, with a 10.38 ERA over 8 2/3 innings in his first taste of big league action.
  • The Yankees announced that right-hander Luke Bard has been outrighted to Triple-A.  Since this isn’t the first time Bard has been outrighted in his career, he can opt for free agency rather than accept the Triple-A assignment.  The righty pitched one game in the pinstripes after being claimed off waivers from the Rays in early August, and for the 2022 season in total, Bard has a 1.80 ERA over 15 innings with Tampa Bay and New York.

  • The Orioles announced that infielder Jonathan Araúz cleared outright waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk. He was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox in June and has gotten into 15 games at the big league level this year between the two clubs. The 24-year-old hit just .132/.150/.211 in that time but provided defensive versatility by playing second base, third base and shortstop. In 35 Triple-A games this year, he’s hit .192/.264/.238. Since this is the first outright of his career and he has less than three years of MLB service time, he won’t have the right to reject the assignment and become a free agent.
  • The Mets outrighted right-hander Adonis Medina, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. Medina, 25, was acquired from the Pirates in April for cash considerations and has been tossed between Triple-A and the majors all year long. In 23 2/3 MLB innings, he has a 6.08 ERA, 15.5% strikeout rate and 5.5% walk rate. In 26 2/3 innings for Syracuse, he has a much better 3.71 ERA and 20.2% strikeout rate, though a much higher walk rate of 12.1%. This is the first outright of his career and he has less than three years of MLB service time, meaning he will have to accept the outright assignment to Syracuse.
  • The Cubs sent right-hander Kervin Castro outright to Triple-A Iowa, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The 23-year-old began the season with the Giants but went to the Cubs on a waiver claim in August. Between the two clubs, he’s thrown 12 1/3 MLB innings this year, but with a 10.22 ERA and 12.3% walk rate. In 34 2/3 Triple-A innings between the two organizations, he has a 5.19 ERA with a 16% walk rate. He has less than three years of MLB service time and this is his first career outright, meaning he will not be eligible to reject this assignment.
  • The Twins sent right-hander Jake Jewell outright to Triple-A St. Paul, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The 29-year-old began the year with the Guardians on a minor league deal, getting selected to the big league roster in August but getting optioned before appearing in a game. He lasted just over a week on the 40-man roster before getting designated for assignment and landing with Minnesota on waivers. In 48 2/3 Triple-A innings between the two organizations, he has a 3.14 ERA, 25.9% strikeout rate and 8.8% walk rate. Unlike the others on this list, he has been previously outrighted in his career. That gives him the right to reject this assignment and elect free agency, though it’s unclear at this point if he has done so.

Cubs Select Hayden Wesneski, Designate Kervin Castro

9:05am: The Cubs have now formally announced this set of moves, further specifying that Steele’s injury is a lower back strain. His placement on the 15-day IL is retroactive to Sept. 2, per the team.

8:12am: The Cubs are set to select the contract of pitching prospect Hayden Wesneski for his Major League debut, per the team’s transactions log at MLB.com. Righty Kervin Castro is being designated for assignment in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Left-hander Justin Steele, meanwhile, will be placed on the 15-day injured list. Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times tweeted yesterday that Steele’s next start — which had been scheduled for today — was being pushed to the weekend due to a nagging back injury. Now, it seems the Cubs will now give him at least a two-week break to heal up.

Wesneski, 24, was acquired from the Yankees in the one-for-one trade that sent righty Scott Effross to New York prior to the trade deadline. He currently ranks sixth among Cubs farmhands at Baseball America, 12th at MLB.com and 16th at FanGraphs.

The 6’3″, 210-pound Wesneski has appeared in five games in the Cubs organization, all coming with Triple-A Iowa. He’s posted an ugly 5.66 ERA in that time, although that’s due primarily to a disastrous eight-run clunker through just 1 2/3 innings in his organizational debut. Wesneski has bounced back with a 2.37 ERA and 21-to-6 K/BB ratio over his next four appearances (three starts, one relief outing, 19 total innings).

Wesneski has spent the entire season at the Triple-A level despite this just being his second full season after being drafted in the sixth round back in 2019. (There was, of course, no minor league season in 2020.) He’s turned in a 3.92 ERA with a 23.2% strikeout rate, a 7.9% walk rate and a  42.7% ground-ball rate. Wesneski works primarily off a two-seamer and a lesser-used four-seamer (the latter reaching the upper 90s on occasion), complementing those two heaters with a trio of offspeed offerings, all with at least average potential.

Even at the time of the deal, Wesneski was touted as a quick-rising, near-MLB-ready arm that could find his way into the Cubs’ rotation in the very near future. Whether this will just prove to be a spot start or the first step in a more permanent audition remains to be seen, but Wesneski figures to get legitimate chance to crack the rotation next spring, even if this is just a one-off promotion born out of necessity. The scouting reports at BA, MLB.com and FanGraphs all tab him as likely fourth/fifth starter. He’ll be controllable through at least the 2028 season.

As for the 23-year-old Castro, he was a waiver claim out of the Giants organization in early August who wound up throwing 10 2/3 innings out of the Chicago bullpen. Castro’s 92.7 mph average fastball was down nearly two miles per hour from his 2021 velocity, and he’s had considerable issues throwing strikes both in the big leagues and in Triple-A this season (with both the Giants and Cubs). He’s been tagged for 14 runs in 12 1/3 MLB frames this year (10.22 ERA) and also has a 5.19 ERA in Triple-A. He’s walked 15.1% of his opponents between Triple-A and the Majors this year. The Cubs will place Castro on waivers or release him within a week’s time.

Minor MLB Transactions: Deadline Day

As is the case at every trade deadline, there’s a flurry of activity on deadline day. The most high-profile of the moves are the trades themselves, but the aftermath of that activity often results in a shuffle of minor moves of their own. Plenty of clubs have had to fill or create roster spots depending on the deals they’ve made in the last 24 hours. Giants Designate Kervin Castro For Assignment

The Giants announced tonight they’ve designated reliever Kervin Castro for assignment. The move clears a 40-man roster spot for minor league catcher Ford Proctor, who was acquired in a trade with the Rays.

Castro, 23, has reached the majors in each of the past two seasons. He made ten appearances with the big league club last year and two more this season, working a combined 15 innings. He’s allowed six runs (five earned) over that stretch, striking out a solid 25.4% of batters faced on a lofty 13.9% swinging strike rate. Despite showing some promise in his limited big league time, he’s had a much tougher go of things in Triple-A Sacramento this year.

Through 32 1/3 frames at the minors top level, the righty owns a 5.57 ERA. His strikeout rate is down a few points relative to his big league mark, but the more concerning aspect is that he’s doled out free passes at a massive 15.9% clip. Those control issues eventually squeezed Castro off the roster entirely.

San Francisco can trade him over the next few hours, but the likelier outcome is he winds up on waivers. Between his pair of remaining minor league option years and mid-90s fastball, it stands to reason another club might roll the dice in hopes of adding an effective bullpen depth piece. Baseball America recently rated Castro as the #22 prospect in the San Francisco farm system, praising the downhill action on his low-80s curveball.

Giants Designate Chris Shaw, Aramis Garcia, Jordan Humphreys

The Giants have designated first baseman/outfielder Chris Shaw, catcher Aramis Garcia and right-hander Jordan Humphreys for assignment. They added outfielder Alexander Canario and righties Kervin Castro, Camilo Doval and Gregory Santos to their 40-man roster in corresponding moves.

Shaw was once a well-regarded prospect for the Giants, but the 27-year-old hasn’t gotten an extensive look in the majors yet. He’s the owner of a .153/.244/.222 line in 82 plate appearances as a Giant. Like Shaw, Garcia was seen as a promising farmhand in the past, but he stumbled to a .229/.270/.419  mark in 111 trips to the plate in San Francisco from 2018-19.

Humphreys was the return the Giants received from the Mets for outfielder Billy Hamilton last August. The deal could go down as a wash for both sides, as Hamilton is now a free agent after making little impact with the Mets and Humphreys hasn’t contributed to the Giants. The 24-year-old barely pitched at all from 2018-19 because of arm problems.
