Braves Sign Ty Tice To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | January 13, 2023 at 6:37pm CDT

The Braves have signed right-hander Ty Tice to a minor league deal, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com and Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America. The righty will presumably receive an invitation to major league Spring Training.

Tice, 26, was a 16th round selection of the Blue Jays in the 2017 draft. The reliever worked his way up the minor league ladder quickly, spending 2019 in Double-A and Triple-A. He tossed 57 2/3 innings between the two levels with a 2.34 ERA and 25.5% strikeout rate. His 11.6% walk rate was certainly concerning but he still posted good results overall.

There were no minor leagues in 2020 due to the pandemic but Tice was added to the Jays’ roster in November of that year to protect him from Rule 5 selection. He ended up donning many uniforms in 2021, as he shuffled between the majors and minors for the Jays, Braves and Diamondbacks, going to the latter two clubs on waiver claims. He posted a 4.50 ERA in five major league appearances but an unsightly 9.14 earned run mark in the minors. The D-Backs outrighted him off their roster late in 2021 and he spent 2022 with their Double-A team, posting a 6.45 ERA over 22 1/3 innings, striking out 24.3% of batters faced but walking 10.3% of them.

It’s been a rough couple of years but Tice is still young and will try to get back on track to provide the Braves with some non-roster depth. If he can earn a 40-man spot again, he still has a couple of option years and less than a year of MLB service time.

Meanwhile the Braves show how cheap they are yet again and force to have an arbitration hearing for a second time with Fried.

People really think they’re going to extend him at some point? Fried is as good as gone when we lose control of him. Braves refuse to pay players. People still seem so confused by the fact most of these extensions simply are buying up years they controlled these guys anyway, then bought out the arb years plus maybe 1 or 2 free agent years.

The Braves are too cheap to pay for players free agent years plain and simple.

I’ll enjoy the dwindling moments of Fried while we still have him. Looking forward to another hole not being filled when he finally does depart.

All those extensions and maybe we have 1 more year of this team being competitive before too many holes are exposed and we’re mediocre again.

@MJ I bet you’re a blast at parties. Never in my life have I seen someone so miserable and whinny. Non stop whining, writing novels complaining about a team that has won five straight division titles and has a WS ring in the past five years….and just won 101 games. Typical spoiled Braves fan.

I don’t believe he is actually a Braves fan. If he was, he wouldn’t be so insufferably obnoxious. I think he is like a Mets fan or some other team in that division and he just gets his kicks by being an idiot.

          To quote Michael Jordan:

“It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve done it before. All that matters is you do it now.”

Pointing to 5 division titles and a WS ring in the past 5 years for a reason I should be content is the mentality of a loser. We did good before so we should be happy. That’s the mentality of the Braves FO: “Well we gave them a WS so they should be happy regardless if major holes go unfulfilled now.” Sorry but the winners of the world aren’t content with what they did before.

If you want to call me whiny, fine. But one of the greatest winners in sports shared my perspective about the now, rather than resting on previous successes. Let that sink in, and tell me you’re happy with what the Braves are doing now. It’s not 2022 anymore. They’re objectively worse than their 101 win team.

“I don’t always have to hit the last shot, but I do have to walk away knowing I did everything I could to win the game.”

Say what you want about the Phillies and Mets. They don’t always get it right, that’s for sure, but they do give everything they have to field a winner.

You can’t really say that for the Braves. They like to put together 90% of a team and see what happens from there.

We had the lowest WAR from a corner outfield spot last year out of all 30 teams and did nothing to fix it. Basically, the Braves are choosing to give an automatic out in their lineup – we get 8 guys everyone else gets 9. This team is doing everything they can to win? I don’t know how gullible you have to be to believe that. If you want to say it wasn’t feasible to bring in a capable SS (which I don’t agree with either but whatever) you really have no argument that they couldn’t do something about the outfield. A league average outfielder would have been a significant improvement and not hard. A team supposed to contend for World Series can’t be bothered to bring in a league average outfielder after being exposed hard for an entire 2022 at that position.

But yay we won in 2021 guys!!!!

@MJ: Of course Fried’s going through the arb process. He’s the Braves Player Union Rep. Imo, the Braves shouldn’t extend Fried. They have him under control for 2 more seasons, and he’ll be 31 when he reaches free agency. Why would you want any pitcher signed to a long term expensive contract at that age? He’s already had one TJS as well. He’ll be easily replaced. The Braves have strong pitching prospects in the lower minors and another half dozen plus from the last 2 drafts. Any contract offer to Fried that bought out more than 2-3 years of his free agency would be bad business. Most they should offer him at this time is 5 years @$110M. If he doesn’t bite, deal him next winter.

It’s fine if they don’t extend him assuming they could be trusted to fill the hole he creates when he leaves. But they won’t do that.

Track records speak for themselves and this team is only going to win by overcoming significant odds. Some of you act like they were favorites in 2021 or something. That wasn’t a WS caliber team. We all enjoyed the ride but FO did not have a championship team on the field. Not even close. 2022 was better and the most complete team they’ve had to date in some ways, but even that was a product of unexpected breakouts from Harris and Strider.

@MJ…..yes, that is a quote for Michael Jordan to motivate himself. Now find me the Michael Jordan quote when he complained and whined about not having an all-star at every position? You won’t find that from Jordan, that would be Lebron….you should be quoting him. Y’all definitely have the whining and complaining in common.

I wonder if he has a Braves ring from 2021. He only pitched an inning. I’d lean towards yes considering players are inclined to help their own.
