Brewers Acquire Bryse Wilson From Pirates

By Darragh McDonald | January 4, 2023 at 3:55pm CDT

3:55pm: In a corresponding move, the Brewers have designated right-hander Trevor Kelly for assignment, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Kelley, 30, was signed to a minor league deal prior to the 2022 season and was selected to the roster in May. He tossed 34 1/3 Triple-A innings with a 2.36 ERA but posted a 6.08 ERA in 23 2/3 big league innings.

3:10pm: The Brewers announced that they have acquired right-hander Bryse Wilson from the Pirates. Wilson had been designated for assignment last week by the Bucs, who will receive cash considerations from Milwaukee in this deal.

Wilson, 25, was selected by Atlanta in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. He shot up prospect rankings in 2018, as he went from High-A to Double-A to Triple-A and the majors at the age of 20. After that surge, he was ranked the #80 prospect in the league by Baseball America going into the 2019 season.

Unfortunately, Wilson hasn’t been able to deliver on that excitement in the subsequent seasons. Atlanta frequently optioned him to the minors over the 2019-2021 seasons, only allowing him to make 20 big league appearances in that time. They then flipped him to Pittsburgh at the deadline in 2021 as part of the Richard Rodríguez trade.

With the Bucs in 2022, he got his most extended stretch of MLB action thus far in his career, tossing 115 2/3 innings over 20 starts and six relief appearances. He posted a 5.52 ERA in that time with solid a 6.3% walk rate and 43.3% ground ball rate but a meager 15.5% strikeout rate.

Now out of options, it seems Wilson’s rotation opportunities dried up in Pittsburgh, but the Brewers are willing to take a shot. The front of the Milwaukee rotation is spoken for with Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta and Eric Lauer taking the first four spots. Wilson could be in competition for the final spot with the likes of Aaron Ashby and Adrian Houser. An injury to anyone in the rotation could open things up a bit, but it’s also possible that a couple of the guys in that trio end up in the bullpen as long relief options.

Milwaukee’s Best isn’t made anymore so I’m not sure how valuable it is if Pittsburg (they don’t get the H back until they’re relevant) intends on drinking it.

Small chance he’ll start games in Milwaukee. Maybe if they’re ravaged with injuries. I suspect he’d be a prime candidate for the Suter role out of the pen.

Wilson wasn’t good, but after the Pirates recalled him in July, he was better. 4.39 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 4.9% walk rate. Both xFIP and SIERA were pretty much in agreement to his stats as he had a 4.47 and 4.46 mark, respectively. Not saying he was great or anything, but was semi-servicable as a back of the rotation arm.

An ERA / FIP in the lower 4’s is practically Cy Young material these days.

I’m kind of surprised they only got cash for him. I wasn’t expecting some sort of haul or anything, but I would have rather seen a low-level prospect than cash, unless they plan on using that cash toward something. Starting pitchers are pretty valuable and his numbers post-July weren’t any worse than Jordan Lyles.

MLB- It took a very long time for Garcia to get on the roster and it may have been because the Pirates were trying to trade Wilson.I think that they should have given him one more chance as the long man to start the season.I would not doubt that Milwaukee can do something with him.

If Brewers pitching instructors can teach this guy to keep his fastball off of Main Street, he may be ok. Along with his Pirates colleagues, it’s doubtful there has ever been a pitching staff so in love with dead red

The Pirates weren’t that much of a fastball-heavy team last year. Their pitchers only used the FB about 47.7% of the time, which was the 10th lowest mark in baseball. After July, Wilson had pretty much set his fastball on the back-burner as he didn’t use it more than 30% of the time after his game on June 14th. Concidentially, this coinsided with a 4.39 ERA from July-October.

mlb, you are likely right and as such, one must wonder why they have such a difficult time spotting the fastball and either have no control of their spin pitches or again, like hanging them as they do
        I mean, seeing is believing
Having watched these guys for the great majority of their games, I can only hope some progress was or will be made before the ‘23 season begins

Ya know, I’m not a stat guy, but it always seemed like he’d give up 3 or 4 runs during a bad inning, last no more than 5 innings total, and we’d be down 4-1 or 4-0 due to poor run support. Then Counsell would yank him before the 6th and hand it to the pen. We could do a lot worse, ie Jordan Lyles.
