Tigers Sign Aneurys Zabala To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | January 8, 2023 at 12:06pm CDT

The Tigers have added right-hander Aneurys Zabala on a minor league deal, according to his MLB transaction log. Zabala was designated for assignment by the Marlins in September last year, and became a free agent at the end of the season.

Zabala, 26, had a very brief stint in the majors last year for Miami, pitching in two games and throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he tossed 17 2/3 innings of of 9.51 ERA ball, where his strong 25.2% strikeout rate was offset by an unsightly 23.5% walk rate.

Originally signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Mariners back in 2014, Zabala bounced around a few teams in addition to Seattle coming up through the minors, getting stints within the Dodgers, Reds and Phillies organizations, before landing with the Marlins. He’s flashed a 99 mph fastball, but has generally struggled with the walks. That became far more pronounced in 2022, as it’s tended to hover in the 12-15% range rather than the 23.5% mark it wound up at in 2022.

FYI -An aneurysm or aneurism is a localized, blood-filled balloon-like bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. Aneurysms can commonly occur in arteries at the base of the brain and an aortic aneurysm occurs in the main artery carrying blood from the left ventricle of the heart.
      Nasty stuff…

If his name was Strok I’d have written it almost gave me a stroke.

If his name was Gonorrh, I’d have written … well, you get the picture.

Why although this signing adds depth to the Tigers organization I don’t quite see it as a move of any real significance hence not a move that would be helping build a dynasty.

If he can be straightened out then cool. If not, cool. There’s a ton of guys throwing heat but walks will kill that potential every time!

Relax. This is a minor league contract. They sign him and either fix his wildness, which means he’s throwing 99 mph Ks, or they can’t and they cut him. No risk all reward.

Since the rotation is filled at the moment, I expect every lefty invited to spring training to be pitching for bullpen roles, including Wentz.

Besides possibly Lorenzen and Boyd, it seems as if Harris is less willing to sign the 1 year trade rentals than Avila was. I figured he would hone in on the unproven guys with team control- Edwin Rios, Alfonso Rivas, Vinny Capra, Allan Cerda types.

I am really hoping this is bedrock for Tiger nation. The amount of unknowns is brutal for us fans. It seems foolish to cast any blame whatsoever on Scott Harris.
It would be great to see Illitch be willing to bring some light into the tunnel, like signing Correa. But, I truly think he wants the organization to be ran more like Cleveland, as oppose to his father who envisioned more of a St Louis org type.

It’s a minor league contract, but we have to laugh at something. The box score during this season will be no laughing matter.
