Yankees, Franchy Cordero Agree To Major League Deal

By Steve Adams | March 29, 2023 at 11:39am CDT

The Yankees have signed outfielder Franchy Cordero to a Major League contract, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan (Twitter thread). It’s a split deal that’ll pay Cordero $1MM in the big leagues and at a $180K rate in the minors. Yeimel Mendez first reported late last night that Cordero was nearing a deal with the Yankees.

Cordero spent spring training with the Orioles and fared quite well, turning in a .413/.426/.674 slash with a pair of homers, four doubles, a triple and a stolen base. He also fanned 11 times in 47 plate appearances and didn’t draw a walk. The Orioles apparently determined that he wouldn’t make the Opening Day roster, however, and cut him loose earlier this week.

The 28-year-old Cordero has spent parts of six seasons in the Majors, tantalizing the Padres, Royals and Red Sox with off-the-charts tools but a lackluster approach and sub-par feel for making contact. He has immense raw power and speed alike but doesn’t get to that power enough in games due to his lack of selectivity and penchant for putting himself in disadvantageous counts. Cordero has connected on some of the most majestic home runs of the Statcast era, but he’s a career .221/.290/.386 hitter thanks in no small part to a career 34.8% strikeout rate. To his credit, Cordero slightly dropped his strikeout rate with Boston last season (33.5%, down from 35.7% previously) and upped his walk rate (10.2%, up from 8%).

Barring further additions, it now seems likely that Cordero will crack the Yankees’ Opening Day club, perhaps pushing out-of-options Estevan Florial off the roster in the process. The Yankees confirmed this morning that they granted outfielder Rafael Ortega his release — as MLBTR reported yesterday — which left Florial in line for the final outfield spot. The addition of Cordero, however, calls Florial’s role on the club into question.

On the defensive end of things, Cordero has experience at all three outfield spots, and the Red Sox gave him 427 innings at first base over the past two seasons as well. He doesn’t grade out as a strong outfielder by measure of Defensive Runs Saved (-8), Ultimate Zone Rating (-6.3) or Outs Above Average (-1), but he has 1100 innings of big league experience split across all three spots. At least in the early going, he can back up the trio of Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton while providing some lefty thump off the bench.

While Cordero’s contract is a split deal, that’s not likely to come into play right away. Cordero is out of minor league options, so the only way the Yankees could send him to the minors would be by first passing him through waivers. They could opt to do so when Harrison Bader returns from the injured list, but at least for now, the big league agreement seems to signal intent to include him on tomorrow’s 26-mnan roster. He’ll earn the prorated version of that $1MM salary for any time spent on the Major League roster and the prorated $180K for any time spent in the minors.

It’s Joey Gallo without the power, walks, and good defense. What could go wrong?

Actually, he has as much power as Gallo, and he’s much faster, but he’s bad in the field and he doesn’t draw walks much. I’m surprised NY picked him up, except that he had a great spring, which should soon end.

There’s a big difference between a Veteran making an adjustment to his swing to recapture what he had at one time vs a player that has shown nothing but some power and major swing miss issues at the MLB level.

I don’t understand this contract. It’s a major league deal but with a minor league salary pre-determined? So that means Yanks will immediately option him? Or is he on the major league roster and someone else needs to be moved?

I’m guessing they gave him a 40 man spot and will try to get him through waivers to option him. I don’t think he can refuse with the split contract.

I think that’s the philosophy. You basically pay someone off to agree to go to the minors without adding them to the 40. I think the RS did that last year or the year before, and it might have been with Franchy.

I like Franchy Cordero, when he first came up, his swing reminded me of Darryl Strawberry. I hope he puts it together and is a late bloomer with the Yankees.

He’ll earn a $1M pro-rated salary for ML time and $180k prorated while in the minors. When Bader comes back, Cordero will have to pass through waivers before being sent down. They can also option Cabrera down if Cordero stays on the 26-man roster.

It’s likely now that Florial (poor guy) gets traded or waived.

Yankees must keep Franchy on the 26-man roster. He is out of options, so if they want to send him to AAA, they must DFA him and expose him to waivers. At that point any other organization can claim him if they have an open 40-man spot on their roster. The new team assumes the MLB contract (paying the prorated minimum – Yankees prorated amount over the minimum). If Franchy is unclaimed and assigned to AAA, only then does the $180,000 minor league salary apply.

He has great athleticism, but poor outfield and 1B defense. He strikeouts a ton, and after hot starts tends to falls into a funk where he chases pitches and gets himself out. He is fools gold. That said, with the ban box short RF he may hit 10-15 HRs before loosing his job in NY.

A split contract is the same as every player whose salary wasn’t predetermined via the arb process or free agency. Half the players in the bigs are playing on split contracts. It means they receive the prorated big league salary for days in the bigs, and the prorated minor league salary for days in the minors. He still has one option year remaining, he’s on the 40 man roster.

Fangraphs says he has no options. And the negotiated split contract gives him a pretty high AAA salary.

I’ve just spoken to Jason Martinez at fangraphs, he’s in the process of changing the option year status to 1. And the negotiated split contract is not that high, the CBA dictates that all players on optional assignment with 0.001+ years of service make a minimum of 117,400$ this season.

Cabrera probably against lefties and Franchy against righties while also getting some DH AB’s and backing up Rizzo at 1B. Hicks as 4th OF. The Yankees have to know having Judge in CF and Stanton in RF regularly is probably a disaster waiting to happen

Franchy, Ryan O’Hearn, and Terrin Vavra all basically went neck-and-neck with the edge going to Vavra because he can play multiple positions and was already on the 40 man roster. If Franchy had pulled away from the others (which would have been difficult because they all had good springs) the O’s would have made room

Every since I have grown up, Franchy Cordero has been my favorite player. Where he got traded for Tim Hill, I knew it would be a mistake for the Padres. Same thing for the Royals when he got traded for Benintendi. This is a guy I’ve looked up to forever and as a Yankees fan this is a dream come true. Now, he will prove everyone wrong this year and finish with absurd numbers. Not only is he a great players, but he is a great family man who provides for his beautiful wife and kids and donates to charity. This young man will strive in the Bronx.

I can’t imagine there isn’t a better option out there. Cordero has a career ops+ of 83, oh and his defense is terrible too. He’s fast but won’t take a walk, has 13 career stolen bases in 227 games, and improved to only striking out in one of every 3 at bats. The tools are intriguing, but no one has ever made worse use of them.
