Angels Select Chris Devenski, Place Jose Quijada On 15-Day IL

By Simon Hampton | April 29, 2023 at 2:20pm CDT

The Angels announced they’ve selected the contract of right hander Chris Devenski, and placed left hander Jose Quijada on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation. To make room on the 40-man roster, catcher Logan O’Hoppe was transferred to the 60-day IL.

The 32-year-old Devenski was once a top reliever with the Astros, but has struggled in recent years. His last stint in the big leagues resulted in an 8.59 ERA across 14 2/3 innings between the Diamondbacks and Phillies last year.

That’s a far cry from his days with the Astros. Devenski burst onto the scene with Houston, putting up a 2.16 ERA over 108 1/3 innings in his rookie year and finishing fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting. He followed that up with another quality season, posting a 2.68 ERA in 80 2/3 relief innings in 2017 and earning a trip to the All Star game. The wheels began to fall off in 2018 though, and Devenski would work to a 4.88 ERA over the next three seasons before being released by the Astros after the 2020 season.

He latched on with the Diamondbacks in 2021 but in sporadic big league stints hasn’t come close to replicating his early career form. He’ll now get a chance to do just that with the Angels.

Quijada had struggled to a 6.00 ERA in nine innings for the Angels this season. The left hander has been a mainstay in the Halos’ pen over the past few seasons, working to a 4.21 ERA over 66 1/3 innings between 2021-22 with a 12.21 K/9 and a  4.88 BB/9.

16 of their first 28 games have been against bad teams, yet they’re only at .500. They have begun a much more difficult stretch of games and they will be lucky to be better than 5 games below .500 on May 25th.

Bad team is subjective. By your own criteria, the Angels aren’t that good either. So I could say that about the teams they’ve played too.

And I’m betting that if your prediction is wrong, you’ll ignore it. Besides which, your opening premise was about Trout demanding a trade.

          Which is ridiculous.

Bad teams: SEA, WAS, OAK, KC. None of that is really debatable. In fact, those are 3 out of the 5 worst teams in MLB.
Good teams: TOR, BOS, NYY, MIL. The only thing debatable about that is the fact that I consider BOS to be a good team, even though they only have a .500 record- since they play in the hardest division in MLB.

It’s another season of more of the same and they will be lucky to be better than 5 games under .500 on May 25th after playing MIL (good team), STL (bad team), TEX (good team), HOU (good team), BALT (good team), MIN (good team).

And I’m not saying he doesn’t have an amazing life, I’m saying that not having a World Series ring is a huge issue for someone like him- especially someone as competitive as him. It only takes 1- at least Ripken got 1, at least Rodriguez got 1. It’s a huge thing missing from a resume for an all time greats- players like Griffey, Bonds.

“This might be the season Trout demands a trade.”

I cannot fathom Mr. Trout demanding anything. The chances of getting a World Series ring are now so random, with so many teams in the playoffs, that ‘demanding’ to go to a winning team, would be foolish at best.

The Angels are easily my most disappointing team, year after year. I grew up watching Nolan Ryan pitch for them, so I get frustrated watching them toil in mediocrity year after year. It seems the Angels fans may agree, because lately I’ve seen half empty stadiums in Anaheim, when they usually FLOCK to see Ohtani/Trout.

I cannot comment on any one game, but I watch them 3-4 times a week and tv shows quite a few empty seats on several of their games and I’ve not seen this so much in the previous 5 yrs or so. The Angels have been MEDIOCRE for several yrs and you find it impossible that Anaheim fans have seen this too? And because you attended one game?

Several of their games, good trick they have only played 6 home games this year. That means they have had a half empty stadium for every game, just doesn’t seem possible unless you are just making crap up. That seems more likely.

@outinleftfield…Reading is fundamental my little troll, friend. You just made my point for me. Go check the internet and see all the 40,000+ attendance figures from 2010-2019 in Anaheim. 30,000 IS a lot for SOME teams, but when you have Trout/Ohtani and routinely PACK 40k, 31k is a little bit disappointing. I never said they had no fans, only that attendance was down. You’ll always have fans when you have Trout/Ohtani on your team.

Angel haven’t averaged 40k attendance per game since 2010, which pre-dates Trout. The attendance was much higher when the team were perennial playoff contenders., but that is the case anywhere. Arte deciding to stick around doesn’t help attendance.

Every single season since 2003 the Angels have been top 10 in baseball, with the exception of the 2020-2021 COVID years and this year is no different. If you actually followed Angels baseball you would know that come the middle of May the attendance will start to go up and peak in September regardless of the record of the team.

But you are a troll that didn’t even LOOK at Angels attendance before I called you out on your BS. Don’t bother responding. I wont see it. This is the last attention I give to a troll like you.

Attendance is down because school is still in AND the weather, especially early in April, has been abnormally cool and wet by California standards. Another storm next week, more snow in the mountains…in May.

The Angels are far more family centric than those 2 teams.

If one lives along the I-5/I-15 corridors, you have your pick of three teams. What this shows is that coning in third in a vig market can be worse than being in an ACTUAL small market.

The thing most impressive about Shohei is the physical toll pitching takes, and how he overcomes. The other day, when he had both a perfect game and a cycle working, he had that one bad inning… Then bounced back, settled down… and hit a triple!
Pitching is as much LEGS as your arm. To run the bases hard, and then immediately take the mound, is extremely hard! Ohtani has talent, but the dude also leaves it out on the field. Mad props for that.

Did you think he can sustain 2 way greatness?
My thoughts are his piching savvy carries him well into his 30s.
Father time has proven again and again not to be so friendly to the bat.
The point is, is he worth the money to be paid as a 2 way talent?
I still argue the point that the Angels paid Justin Upton and Noah Syndergaard 53 million or whatever to go away/play for them last year!!
Shohei is way better than both.
Short term, 50 million a year for Shohei is an absolute bargain.

I’d have asked Ohtani (around 2021) what he’d hoped to achieve in baseball long term. If it were commensurate with the team winning, I’d have written a check. If not, I’d have moved in a different direction. Re-signing Ohtani should have been done by now… If it were to be done at all.

I disagree with all the $500 million dollar talk. I don’t think a deal that long is worth any risk. If he ‘wants to play with a winner…’, well, if they’re already winners, who needs him?

That’s the LAA average home attendance. 10th in MLB. For what it’s worth. Again, with no dog in this fight, that seems low, for arguably having the two best ballplayers in the game.

      Attendance will improve.
But the confidence of Angels fans has not.
Already feeling uneasy. Typical wierd injuries. The Blowpen. Can’t win with those 2 studs?
      Not quite doom… yet.
Bring on the wave of pitching at AA to the “bullpen” in Anaheim.

Imho, Arte never found his Gabe Paul or his Gene Michael. He never found that guy to whom he could leave the checkbook, tell that guy “build me a winner’, and sit back and relax with a beer as his team conquered. And the ALW has not been a historical powerhouse. Should have gotten done by now.

Stoneman was that guy. So was Reagins until Arte signed the new lease that paid him extra for passing 2.6 million in attendance. From that point on it became about stars to fill seats rather than winning and Arte stepped into every personnel decision to make sure he could fill seats. That was why Tony Reagins quit.

Well, increasing revenue while developing talent actually works… IF you develop the young talent. But if you stunt that development by constantly signing old guys to long contracts…

Arte started chopping scouting, minor league instructors, and anything that didn’t have to do directly with the major league squad and putting more dollars in his pocket immediately. When they started courting Ohtani, the team didn’t have a single pacific rim scout and only one in the Caribbean. They had no analytic department to speak of until Eppler.

Generally, when you’re running through GMs like a fat guy at a deli counter, it’s a sign of a meddling owner. Yanks went through several years of this.

Arte seems like a great businessman. He was absent the day they taught that winning is profitable.

Still a great player but we’ve seen the best of Mike Trout.
Shohei will cost payroll cripling numbers if he stays…And that is the damned if you do or don’t scenario for this team right now.
Because the farm is pitching heavy and offensively barren. Going to have to buy or be forced to trade for hitters in the not so distant future.

Seems like a lot of pitchers have gone down in the last couple of weeks. Could there be a correlation to them having to rush their deliveries due to the pitch clock?

When I get rushed to do what I do, I get sloppy. I’m gonna say yes, it’s a factor. What say you bronx other than “no”?

Bobby Valentine pointed out his drop in velocity during the game on Thursday. Probably explains that outing and the one before.

“Well yeah… But you have to change those unis! Looks like your team rolled in cow patties!”

Shohei and his people, talking with AJ Preller.

    Nightmare scenario:
Shohei gets traded to the Yankees when NYY comes to Anaheim. He merely crosses the field like ICHIRO did… bowing deeply to the fans of his former team.

Off topic… But you guys realize that Mexico City is elevated kind of like Denver? Look at the score of SD/SF. It’s like slo-pitch.

And NELSON CRUZ just stole second!

Could be! Unless it’s Ichiro. Ichiro kept himself fit.
