Luis Urias Out 6-8 Weeks With Hamstring Injury

By Simon Hampton | April 1, 2023 at 9:47am CDT

11:14am: Craig Counsell told reporters (including Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) that Urias will miss 6-8 weeks of action.

9:47am: The Brewers announced a couple of roster moves this morning, placing infielder Luis Urias on the 10-day injured list retroactive to March 31 after he sustained a left hamstring injury on Opening Day. The team also announced that left-handed pitcher Justin Wilson has been transferred to the 60-day IL.

It opens the door for the Brewers to officially add prospect Joey Wiemer to their big league roster, as he’ll take the place of Urias, while Wilson’s move to the 60-day IL opens up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Urias hurt his hamstring in the ninth inning of Milwaukee’s 4-0 Opening Day loss to the Cubs, having gone 0-4 in the match. There’s no indication yet of how long Urias will be out for, but this opens the door for Brian Anderson to handle the hot corner in the meantime, with Wiemer taking over in right for the time being.

A fourth round pick in 2020, Wiemer has shot up the Brewers’ prospect charts in recent years, and his .287/.368/.520 line over 174 plate appearances at the highest level of the minors last season showed he was knocking on the door of his first big league call up. While scouts raised concerns over his strikeouts and swing mechanics dating back to the draft, Wiemer’s raw power and athleticism have shone through and he was placed near the back of Keith Law’s recent top-100 prospects in all of baseball.

The move to shift Wilson to the 60-day IL was likely an easy one for the Brewers. The veteran lefty underwent Tommy John surgery in June of last year, so he is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2023 campaign. The Brewers signed him this winter to a one-year deal, but hold a club option on him for 2024.

I’m not sure how much more there is to report other than these moves were expected since they had to add Weimer to the 40 man, so everyone knew a 60 day dl move was coming from Wilson or Ashby and that Urias was likely headed to the 10 day dl. That’s pretty much all there is to this story.

That’s how I feel because the rest of the “story” here is just stuff already discussed about Wiemers call up. There’s not really anything new to this news. It kinda coulda just been an update on the Wiemer call up story.

Huh? Yea they sure don’t…I mean they pitchers throw harder than ever before and hitters have to hit against 100mph while adjusting to nasty off speed pitches…but yea they don’t make’m like the the old days

cards81: You just proved Old York’s point. More pitchers THROW HARDER than they did in the past. However they actually PITCH WORSE than they did in the past.

That wasn’t his point at all. Are you stupid or something? His point was perceived weakness, not how well guys pitch compared to before.

        @cards81

In other words, they pitch faster for a few innings and then have to be injured for the next few years and end up being less effective. So, if by better, you mean, we eat through more pitchers, I guess so???

Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Dwight Gooden, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez all threw absolute gas but also knew how to actually pitch. All the “max effort” pitchers today would be getting lit up if MLB teams didn’t prioritize launch angle and exit velocity getting every single hitter to uppercut and swing out of their shoes to hit everything 500ft

Raox, so you’re saying HOF and near-HOF pitchers were extraordinary good? Consider me shocked.

You left out Lefty Grove. I’ve seen vids of Walter Johnson. His delivery was really scary looking. Righthanded batters must have hated facing him.

Old York it’s reflective of society. Getting softer and softer. Soon we’ll have a 32 hour work week instead of 40 hours.

But you are correct. Back in the day, pitchers threw complete games and pitched on three days rest. Would see Nolan Ryan still throwing 100 mph in the 9th inning.

Yes because it’s not archaic to compare work ethic by how many hours you work instead of how efficient you are with them. I get the notion you are trying to make, but working more isn’t what makes you harder. That just gives your hard earned money more value (to yourself) It’s more likely attributed to those who put their ideals above or ahead of their values. People want to feel instead of learn or be taught. People would rather conform and feel accepted than have a backbone and stand up for something they believe in. These are not byproducts of working less. On the other note, things have never been this competitive before. Throwing harder and hitting harder more likely gets you noticed and/or drafted, regardless of the health implications.

Yet another “player” who doesn’t play much. Could end up being addition by subtraction if it gives one of their young guys a shot in the outfield and that allows Anderson to move to 3B.

Hope Anderson stays healthy. He can be a very good player but injuries have hurt him.
