Kris Bryant Leaves Game Due To SI Joint/Glute Injury

By Simon Hampton | April 22, 2023 at 5:34pm CDT

5:34PM: Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters (including ESPN) that Bryant is day-to-day.  The injury isn’t specifically to Bryant’s back, but rather to the sacroiliac joint and glute on the left side of Bryant’s body.  “When he put his foot down and landed, there was a little bit of pain,” Black said.

3:21PM: Bryant left the game due to tightness in his lower back, according to Danielle Allentuck of the Denver Post (Twitter link).

2:49PM: The Rockies have removed Kris Bryant in the third inning of their match against the Phillies. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports that “it appeared” Bryant rolled his ankle on a first inning strikeout.

Although it’s not yet known the severity of any injury here, Bryant has struggled in that department since joining the Rockies on a seven-year, $182MM deal last year, landing on the IL on three separate occasions in 2022 and appearing in just 42 games.

The 42 games he did play were hugely valuable to the Rockies, as Bryant slashed .306/.376/.475 with five home runs. He’s off to a similarly strong start to the year in 2023, putting up a .291/.364/.456 line with three home runs through his first 88 plate appearances entering play today.

The Rockies are off to a disappointing start, sitting at 6-15 in the NL West, and any missed time for Bryant would be a significant blow to the team moving forward.

There is a reason the Cubs didn’t try to extend Baez, Bryant and Contreras.
Other GMs should take note, if the team that has them doesn’t want them, neither should you! The Cubs didn’t even kick the tires with extension for these guys in their last year and it doesn’t matter if you’re “rebuilding” or “reloading”, you want to keep quality guys. It doesn’t always happen but the desire to keep them is always there. Especially in Bryant’s case, if a team is trying to trade him 2-3 years before he’s a free agent, big red flag

Contreras walked out the door. Bryant, Rizzo and Baez were traded. Baez had red flags all over him, KB did as well. Rizzo had a lot of concern regarding his back but the Cubs made an honest effort to keep him around.
As far as Cubs fans being mad, most fans are knee jerk reaction morons. I can’t tell you how many people told me Madrigal was the Cubs future lead off hitter and Hoerner was an injury prone piece of trash only to hear the next year that Madrigal should be released or re-assigned to AAA and his defense was awful. Same idiots hate Happ as well

Happ signed for 61m for 24-26. At this point in their careers KB can’t even hold Happ’s jock strap without getting hurt. Today aside Cubs looking like winners this season. Probably even pull a playoff spot to lose the first series. Big improvement by casting off KB and Baez.

After this season he has $136 million left on contract through 2028. Since MLB contracts are guaranteed even if he were to b cut he could not “test free agency” til 2029. He can only sign for the minimum which would b subtracted from what COL would owe. There is also just next to zero chance COL would release anytime soon.

“Four times he’s had over 600 PAs” yep, four in his first five years and never sense.

It’s not that Bryant missed a ton of games, it’s that he is always hurt. He always has a nagging injury where he misses some time.

Bryant played in just over 100 games the year he hurt his shoulder, then 147 I believe, then in 2020 he played just over 30, then just over 140 again and then he missed a ton of time last year and he’s dealing with a back injury again this year, that’s why people think he’s injury prone.

The problem is also in Colorado, the air is super dry and the ground is super hard. I can’t that mixture boding well for Bryant’s injury history.

I don’t count 2020. He was hurt last year and got 586 in 2021.

Maybe he’ll get close to 600 ABs this year, maybe he won’t, but it needs to be a trend before it’s actually a trend.

This again stuff doesn’t make much sense.

Well just because you don’t count a season doesn’t mean that season didn’t take place and he did miss 27 games regardless of wether the Cubs played 60 or 162.

        • flamingbagofpoop

You can be hurt and still play. Normally that causes your production to go down. You’ll notice that when KB started getting hurt, his production also went down, even when he was still playing.

What a waste of money. A very, very small few players over the years openly said they felt bad about their contracts and offers to refund their salary have been made publicly. KB could easily do that, but he won’t. He needs that extra $100,000,000.00… inflation and a private security force because crime is rampant.

A IL stint for being butt-hurt? Fantastic. Let’s pivot to the inevitable, his Yankee tenure. He seems as prime a candidate as any to be traded to the Bronx for Donaldson as a salary dump and join Stanton as perpetual mainstay on the DL. Since Ellsbury departed, Stanton has really stepped up. In case he gets healthy, Bryant seems like a logical choice to fill that void.
