Giants Place Joc Pederson On Injured List, Activate Mike Yastrzemski

By Anthony Franco | May 15, 2023 at 8:12pm CDT

The Giants announced they’ve placed designated hitter Joc Pederson on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 13, due to a right hand contusion. Outfielder Mike Yastrzemski is back from his own 10-day IL stint to take the vacated active roster spot.

Pederson was injured on Friday when he was struck by a Scott McGough pitch in Arizona. Pederson sat out the rest of the series and apparently needs at least a week more of recovery time. That the Giants didn’t immediately place him on the IL and that x-rays were negative suggests it could be a relatively brief injured list stint, but San Francisco will still be down one of its better bats for the next few games.

Retained over the offseason via the qualifying offer, the lefty-hitting Pederson has had a productive start to his second year in the Bay Area. He’s connected on five home runs, four doubles and a triple over his first 26 games. Pederson has also drawn 14 walks in just 97 trips to the plate, leading to a quality .351 on-base percentage and .494 slugging in spite of a modest .235 batting average. It’s the kind of offensive rate production the Giants were hoping for, although Pederson is now headed to the IL for the second time. He also lost 11 days in April with inflammation in his right wrist.

Yastrzemski missed two weeks with a left hamstring strain. That halted an excellent .292/.333/.521 start to the season for San Francisco’s Opening Day center fielder. He’ll ease back to the roster, as he’s not in tonight’s starting lineup against the Phillies. He’ll be available for skipper Gabe Kapler off the bench and figures to return to the lineup in the next day or two.

I’m really surprised they didn’t call up Arson Judge instead?

I guess Yaz is benefiting from the Shift Rule. With the higher BA. Which is good. Because he was definitely on his way out if he didn’t get it together.

He had one season where he was only a hair below league average with the bat. For a guy that can man center, that isn’t bad. On his way out is laughable

We Giant fans can only hope Yaz picks up where he left off before he went on the IL.

I wonder what the idiots who wanted to DFA him and LaMonte have to say now.

To be fair, Pete, I seem to remember you and I not being overly high on Yaz coming out of spring training ! He showed us as well.
Yes. Here’s hoping the break hasn’t stymied his momentum. They need to get going. Like soon.

Hi foppert! Bryce Johnson covered a lot of ground tonight! He looked great in center 🙂

I’m in rural Thailand for 3 weeks farming water buffalo, Agnes. Internet is costing me a bomb so score updates is the best I can do ! I believe you, though. Good for him. I’m still desperately seeking some consistency, but loving your boys box scores. Go Casey !

Woah! So cool you are there! Hope you are having a great time! I grew up on a farm so I respect what you are doing 🙂

Casey played 2B tonight! He has a rocket of an arm! Got a couple hits too, but he will have to keep adjusting as pitchers throw him more breaking stuff out of the zone. He’s a pretty aggressive hitter, so needs to lay off that stuff. He and Crawford shared some goggles, there’s major good vibes going on with them.

Bryce saved some runs for sure, made a couple of hard catches look effortless.
Conforto is dialing in! Blasted one out and has his timing back. Looks so relieved and much happier.

Joey Bart not so much, I’m not sure what’s going on but maybe he’s guessing too much what is coming. He’s watching fastballs down the middle and swinging at stuff a foot over his head. He has the catching job now but I think Patrick Bailey will be up in August? Who knows.

It was good to see Wood back, he was on a pitch limit. Junis looked ok. Doval closed it out and seems to have mastered the pitch clock now.

          Safe travels! Go Giants!!!

No hot water and not a modern appliance in sight. Just hard work and big smiles. This is living !

I was checking out Casey’s stats today and noticed he is yet to take a walk. Cracking start though. Thanks for the update. You can write a review !

So good to get away from the BS of the world, kudos to you!

Yeah Casey isn’t going to walk much, he’s not Belt or Monty! But that’s ok, plenty of successful aggressive hitters out there, he just needs to be a little more discerning not a ton. I love him!

          Go Giants! Sweep the phils!

foppert — I think we were both worried about his swing and miss on high outside pitches but I’ve never considered DFAing him b/c he’s a terrific OF, with a very accurate arm. His base running is excellent and he has pop. But there were a number of Giants fans who were calling for his ouster, along with LaMonte.
