Padres Claim Gary Sanchez Off Waivers From Mets

By Mark Polishuk | May 29, 2023 at 5:33pm CDT

The Padres have acquired catcher Gary Sanchez, according to reporter Miriam Luz (Twitter link).  Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune adds that Sanchez was picked up on a waiver claim, after the backstop was designated for assignment by the Mets last week.

Today’s waiver claim continues a whirlwind of movement for Sanchez, who went through the entire offseason without landing a free agent deal but will now be joining his third different organization in less than two months.  Sanchez inked a minor league contract with the Giants just after Opening Day, but then exercised his opt-out clause in early May when San Francisco didn’t add him to its active roster.  Sanchez quickly landed with the Mets on another minors deal that ended up locking in a prorated $1.5MM guarantee for the catcher when the Amazins selected him to their 26-man roster just before his next opt-out date on May 19.

However, Sanchez’s time in Queens was brief, as he appeared in only three games before the Mets DFA’ed him.  As per the waiver claim, San Diego is now responsible for the roughly $1.1MM owed to Sanchez in remaining salary, and it was a price the Padres felt was worthwhile given the team’s catching woes.

Heading into today’s action, the Padres ranked 26th of 30 teams in catcher bWAR, as San Diego’s backstop had combined for a sub-replacement level -0.2 total.  Austin Nola suffered a fractured nose late in Spring Training, which may have contributed to his dismal .131/.252/.182 slash line over 118 plate appearances this season.  Luis Campusano only made 22 trips to the plate before hitting the injured list with a thumb injury that required surgery, so he won’t be a factor until around the middle of July.  Rookie Brett Sullivan hasn’t hit much in his first 21 MLB games.

The Padres inked Kevin Plawecki to a minor league deal nine days ago, and now they’ve further bolstered their catching depth with Sanchez.  Considering how little the Padres have gotten from the catcher position, it can be argued that Sanchez almost has to be some level of upgrade, as even the subpar .205/.282/.377 slash line he posted over 471 PA with the Twins in 2022 would be a step up for San Diego.  It would seem like Sanchez will get at least six weeks to show the Padres what he can do, as the team might again re-evaluate its catching position when Campusano gets back, and San Diego also figures to check out more catching options prior to the trade deadline.

Once perhaps baseball’s best-hitting catcher in his prime years with the Yankees, Sanchez has hit only .195/.287/.392 in 1096 PA since the start of the 2020 season, translating to an 89 wRC+.  His oft-criticized defensive issues (not to mention the hitting dropoff) led to an increasing lack of playing time with the Yankees, and ultimately led to New York moving him to the Twins as part of their five-player blockbuster trade in March 2022.  While Sanchez’s glovework seemed to improve a bit in Minnesota, the Twins still let him walk in free agency, and the uncertainty surrounding Sanchez led to his long winter in free agency.  The Brewers and Angels were two of the teams linked to his market before the Giants finally made the signing.

Its kind of like Covid. Teams should have gotten the vaccine. Are there really scouts out there saying this guy can solve our catching problems? Can’t be the analytics dept.

You’re saying Sanchez and COVID are similar because they’re both based around bad information being propagated by the powers that be and gobbled up by people who are susceptible to group think?

My predictor quantum calculator says 97.3% chance Sanchez becomes Tampa Ray and resurges to MVP vote getting slugger.
The Rays won’t, can’t sign him until their more advanced predictor quantum calculator tells them exact perfect time for contract call.

Perhaps after he is released later this year? It seems like a good story for Tampa going to the postseason, and Sanchez heating up to win a postseason award.

No reason for the O’s to get Sanchez when they have the Mets paying the vast majority of McCann’s contract through next season.

Dozier does at least bring some versatility and his former Royals teammate Ryan O’Hearn has shown improvement in Baltimore so maybe of a fit than Sanchez

When he was still w/ NYY he was taken out of the lineup for hitting .088 or something as well as being a horror show defensively. He then proceeded to ask Boone why he was being replaced. I honestly think the dude is completely clueless. Hits a homerun and stands back to admire it like he was Johnny Bench. Very very strange story of a fall from grace.

It all started when Cole didn’t want to pitch to him anymore. He couldn’t and still can’t adjust to pitchers when they all started pitching him differently from his banner year. Injuries aside, it’s the same with Luke Voit. Raw skills are there but the good ones are able to make adjustments and execute.

You can’t say for certain he would have cleared; teams are ALWAYS looking for C help. In the meantime, consider Sanchez a 4-6 week placeholder for Campy? Gary can’t do any worse than what we’ve seen so far…

If Sullivan could hit he would be serviceable. He’s made some great plays. The Superman play in Washington and then a couple of great plays in New York. The kid is a gamer and plays b@ll$ out.

I’ve said this in other post, if not for a handful of inconsistent hitters Nino, Soto, Crone, Odor this team would be in the basement. 1/4 through the season and .5 games above Colorado, that’s bleak man. I’m tired of the patience approach, go old school…see ball, hit ball. What is analytics telling the hitting coaches, because it’s not working! It also not working for turning plays behind the plate.

I expected this. But which current SD catcher gets the boot?

Austin Nola is 33 and looks toast. He was good in spring training before getting hit in the face. He has been horrible this season on offense and defense.

Brett Sullivan is a 29 year old rookie who has also been horrible, but not as horrible.

My guess is Sullivan goes back to El Paso, and might return this year. Maybe after Sanchez is truly horrible in SD.

Tough spot for the Padres. They need help at C (and a few other spots) to be able to compete, but they’re faced with the reality that they’re going to have to trade from their already thinned out farm to upgrade. That’s risky – Preller doubling down on a strategy that really hasn’t worked, could do longer term damage.

At the moment they are, these comments could start the losing streak. I’m hesitant to recognize this team for the good month plus of baseball they have played, after digging they giant hole in April.

They look great Conforto has been strong for awhile now, Haniger is coming around. The young guys are over performing for the most part with the exception of maybe wisely and villar so I expect some regression from Schmitt Bailey walker etc. But they are healthier than they have been all season Crawford has had a few good games after a really bad one, he likely won’t replicate that great season in 21 but he really still is kind of the glue that makes this infield steady (people not playing out of position) although with Schmitt spelling thairo from short in most cases it’s a vast improvement defensively when craw isn’t at short.

The starters have for the most part done their job, I haven’t been a fan of kapler so far this season but even he can’t be blamed solely when players don’t perform at this level. Im rather sick of seeing bullpen games and openers when we have so many capable starters. I’ll try and do some digging to see what the record is with openers but my gut doesn’t say it’s significantly higher in the win column.

Well it’s hard to have a good April win you lose A. Wood, Slater, Haniger, Peterson, Yaz, Bart and Crawford. For parts or all of April. Just ask the Yankees when they were dealing with a rash of injuries in April.

What’s particularly odd is that the Padres felt they were potentially missing out on something by not claiming him. There’s nobody in AAA to call up and give a shot to? Furthermore, there’s nobody at AAA on any other team in the league they could have gotten for cash considerations or PTBNL?

Nola has been a decent-for-a-catcher hitter for his career. Doesn’t strike out a lot, so I expect some of the balls he hits to start dropping in for hits.

If the rest of the Padre, even without Mannie, hit like they’re supposed to, then I’d prefer they start the better defender and game caller behind the plate until Campusano returns.

I wouldn’t count on too many more of those Nola balls dropping in for hits. His expected batting average is .171 which is in the 1st percentile of MLB players per statcast. His expected slugging is .228, which is also in the 1st percentile as well. He’s possibly the worst offensive player in MLB right now and the underlying metrics don’t point to him being that unlucky because he’s just making bad contact and striking out way more than he used to.

How much of that do you think is attributable to him getting beaned?

Where are all the guys from the anti-Mets brigade that were dragging them through the mud a few days ago about the guaranteed money?

    LOLCommenters?

Another guy who never got himself in shape and essentially ate his way out of MLB. Were it not for bottom feeders like the Mets and Dads, he’d be somewhere in the Independent league.
Also, hate to say this but, in addition to letting himself go physically, I think he neglected the mental requirements of catching in MLB. The scouting of hitters, pitch selection etc. He was never going to be confused with Yadier Molina but he had natural gifts. He simply needed to work smarter not harder. One of the most crashing busts in MLB in a long time.

So, in the last couple of years the Padres have taken a chance with both Jorge Alfaro and Gary Sanchez.

Poor Padres fans. Poor Padres pitchers.

    My thoughts on Sanchez.

When he first came up, people thought they were getting offense just under Mike Piazza offense and passable defense. Instead, he has close to Jeff Mathis offense with just under Mike Piazza’s defense (which is really bad).

Hey, look at the bright side. At least he ain’t Mackey Sasser!

      His defense remains passable.

      Pitcher delivers the ball……Gary passes.

I remember the days when Yankees fans said that Sanchez was easily better than JT Realmuto.

Funny kidders with those laughable jokes.

It’s a stop gap. He is not a superstar anymore but he got good enough behind the plate.

I think they will make a trade rather than depend on the options they signed or who is in house.

I think Salvador Perez is a distinct possibility if you look at KC’s record. They have M.J. Melendez as someone who can replace him and the Padres are in a window now with their stars that they need to capitalize on before some start their career declines.

They never have won a World Series and I think they should go for broke right now with what they have which is very capable to get it done.

So little positive to say about Sanchez that the Padres article about the signing has a video of a sac fly with the Mets and a HR from 2019.

    That is frickin’ sad.

Sanchez might be signed by 6 teams before the end of the year. At the end of May, 3 teams have signed him. Half way there
