White Sox Claim Touki Toussaint From Guardians

By Darragh McDonald | June 20, 2023 at 4:00pm CDT

The White Sox have claimed right-hander Touki Toussaint off waivers from the Guardians, per announcements from both clubs. He had been designated for assignment by the Guards on the weekend. The Sox already had a vacancy on their 40-man and won’t need to make a corresponding move at this time.

The waiver claim serves as something of a birthday present for Toussaint, who turns 27 today. Once a first-round draft pick of the Diamondbacks and top 100 prospect during his time in the minors, he has yet to put it all together in the big leagues. He has a 5.33 ERA in 174 innings dating back to the 2018 season. His strikeout and ground ball numbers have been solid but control has been a frequent issue, with Toussaint walking 13.9% of batters faced in his career.

He qualified for arbitration for the first time as a Super Two player at the end of last season, but the Angels non-tendered him instead. He signed a minor league deal with the Guardians and has been pitching in relief in Triple-A. He posted a 4.06 ERA over 20 appearances, striking out 30.2% of opponents but walking 14.5% of them. He got called up to the big leagues a few days ago to serve as an emergency starter in place of Triston McKenzie. Toussaint tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs despite surrendering three hits and five walks.

The Sox have decided to use their open 40-man slot to take a shot on Toussaint despite the ongoing control problems. Since Toussaint is out of options, they will need to make a corresponding move to get him onto the active roster whenever he reports to the team.

You see a guy who walks 14.5%, has an ERA over 4 in Triple A and isn’t good enough for the pitching-starved Guardians. Who else would take a gem like this but the White Sox?

As a die-hard White Sox fan with a season ticket plan, the White Sox are about as pitching starved as it gets…

27, small injury history, plenty of league level experience. Has an arsenal but wild. Innings eater? Just tell him to don’t think and chunk it up there to the plate. Maybe takes away pressure to be accurate? What’s to lose?

Not a good sign if Cleveland can’t straighten you out. Doubt the Chicago white Sox do but they certainly have roster space and deadline deals coming.

@John Kappel I grew up a Pirates and Sox fan. My grandfather loved the Pirates and my grandmother loved the White Sox. They pretty much raised me as my single mom worked a lot. My grandmother taught me how to hit and my grandfather taught me how to field. I am still a fan of both teams, and both are owned by cheapo owners. If Jerry Reinsdork would spend a little of his mega bucks the Sox could take the AL Central easily this year. Same goes for the Pirates in the NL Central if Bob the knob Nutting would open up his tight fist a little. Once you get into the post season any thing is possible.

I was kind of hoping he’d clear waivers so they could keep him as depth, but in an ideal world they wouldn’t need him and he’d be buried in Columbus. So good for him to get another major league opportunity.

Cleveland calls up Gavin Williams. He was the first round pick After Montgomery. We missed a terrific starting pitcher. Another bad choice by our White Sox!!g

Colson Montgomery has a chance to be really good. He was a great pick at 22……. Gavin Williams happened to be a fantastic pick at 23 also.

I wish him well and success. Go get some more players though Mr Reinsdork. The Sox can take that division easily with a little more boost

So I was at the icon theater on Roosevelt Road a few days ago. I purchased tickets to see the new Indiana Jones movie. So I was waiting in line to get a tub of popcorn and some nachos. So as I’m waiting to get my delicious treats, Steve Stone pony Stone himself walked in. So we chatted for a few moments and he actually bought me a box of milk duds. So I asked him about the soxs current roster and he he just shook his head. By the way I was wearing my 1987 Melido Perez jersey I had just bought off of eBay for $9.99. Sweet !!

White Sox are like a super high performance racing engine. However half of their cylinders misfire at all times. When one kicks in another goes offline.
