The Red Sox acquired reliever Mauricio Llovera from the Giants, per a club announcement. Minor league righty Marques Johnson is going to San Francisco in return. The Sox transferred Kaleb Ort from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list to create space on the 40-man roster for Llovera, whom San Francisco had recently designated for assignment.
Llovera, 27, has pitched for the Giants in each of the past two seasons. The right-hander got into 17 games last year, working to a 4.41 ERA through 16 1/3 innings. San Francisco non-tendered him at the start of the offseason but brought him back on a new minor league pact.
The Venezuela native worked to a 3.92 ERA over 20 2/3 frames in a hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. San Francisco selected his contract in early July, deploying him in five big league contests. He worked 5 1/3 frames, allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Llovera has exhausted his option years, meaning the Giants couldn’t send him back to the minors once they called him up. They designated him for assignment on Saturday to make room in the bullpen for Luke Jackson to return from the injured list. Llovera’s upper minors production intrigued the Sox enough they’re willing to install him in the middle innings.
Boston also can’t option him to the minors, so he’ll be on the MLB roster once he reports to the club. He’s the third upper level right-handed relief arm added to the organization within the past two days. The Sox acquired Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman from the Dodgers in the Enrique Hernández trade. Both those pitchers were assigned to Triple-A Worcester as upper minors depth.
In return for a pitcher who’d been squeezed off the roster, San Francisco picks up a low minors reliever. Johnson was an 11th-round selection out of Long Beach State last season. He owns a 6.55 ERA through 34 1/3 innings across 28 outings at Low-A. Johnson has punched out 27.9% of opponents but is walking batters at an alarming 15.6% clip.
Ort has been out since July 5 with inflammation in his throwing elbow. He’s now ineligible to return to the MLB roster until the first week of September. The 31-year-old has a 6.26 ERA over 23 innings on the season.

I’m guessing you are.

Nope. Definitely did a double take

I dig it. Red Sox are sneaky good.

Another move along the margins I’m good with.
In some ways I’m surprised that the returns/costs on some of these pickups have been so low for the acquiring team.
It’s not a flashy name, and, maybe the track record isn’t the longest, but the results have been decent and the potential is there
DBH1969
@GA. I agree. Bloom is having a good week so far. He is making the kind of moves I expected him make when he was first hired.

It’s Boston, so it’s Wicked Good.

Ugh. Missed opportunity by me. You’re right.

Ton of punch in their lineup.

He’s from Venezuela, where a double L is pronounced as a “soft J” – like the sound in the middle of the word “measure”.
Not a clever name
I feel bad for any one of mixed Venezuelan and welsh heritage. That would be one confused kid named Lloyd pronounced Joyed.

Lot less fun for the Veras of the world too.

Nice, another converted to the faith.
BabeRuthsPiano
I didn’t think so at one time but now I’m buying in to what he us creating. This team is loaded with young talent that is under control fir the foreseeable future.
frugalfarhan
It’s moves like this that really instill faith in the fanbase that our front office is putting their resources where it counts. Really exciting time to be a Giants fan.
Ann Porkins
Llovera was DFA’d and didn’t have a long-term spot on the roster. He would have become a free agent and signed elsewhere if they didn’t trade him, so at least they’ve gotten something in return for a player they just cut.
These trades are minor and time-sensitive, so firing this off a few days before the deadline should have virtually no impact on their plans for August 1st.
Being mad at the front office for this is silly and shortsighted. If an article comes out saying the entire front office was pulling an all-nighter grappling with potential deals to dump Llovera, then you’d be justified. Until then, have a little patience and wait until the deadline to pass judgment
foppert1
Hilarious how the anti Zaidi crew are front and centre during free agency, disappear when the games start, and then come back for trade season. It is so obvious why they are here. It’s a sad existence.
frugalfarhan
What’s hilarious is your loyalty to Farhan after 5 years of winning nothing! You never miss an opportunity to defend him yet have nothing concrete to point to where he has helped this team win.
Most places would expect more after 5 years from their front office under normal circumstances but when it’s Farhan’s dumpster ball strategy and he still hasn’t signed any stars, drafted any stars, developed any stars, or traded for any stars and oh BTW hasnt won anything and is likely 2-3 years away from winning anything if he ever does, its a great example of blind loyalty!
Anyone could have gotten this team to this point in 5 years it didn’t take “The smartest man in baseball!” If they had tanked and rebuilt the first 3-4 years we would probably be looking a lot more like the Reds and Orioles right now with exciting young stars to root for instead of lottery ticket draft picks that have yet to win. Time to wake up and smell the mediocrity that is being shoved down your throat Foppert or maybe you are in to things getting shoved down your throat which explains a lot!
foppert1
Keep crying, sunshine. Looking forward to you gutlessly disappearing again.
frugalfarhan
I’m still here
foppert1
Yes you are. Crying about the trade of a player they dfa’d. Good for you, champ.
frugalfarhan
Do you have anything else going on in your life besides posting here and brown nosing Farhan? Might be a good idea to take some time away you don’t seem like you have anything else going on besides immediately replying unnecessarily
claude raymond
You’re initial post was clueless and thereby unnecessary ff. Clearly ff you have the emptiness in your life that would warrant your misguided, errant and left field initial post. Do us a favor and switch to the Padres. Remember when you whined at how they were so much better ran than Giants.
claude raymond
The throat comment? When you say something that you wouldn’t say to someone’s face, while you sit at your PC, then you reveal your true existence.
frugalfarhan
Ah there he is!! Farhans Brown noser number 2! I didn’t expect you to be smart enough to catch the sarcasm in my first post and can’t remember whining about the padres being better run but they definitely seem like they are trying harder.
If you really have paid that close attention to all my posts you would know that I’m still waiting for either of you guys to come up with a reason why you still think Farhan is so great! You had excuses in years one through 3 (inherited poor team and farm, wait till they have money off the books, Farhan has an eye for talent and will develop prospects, he will sign a star when so and so is off the books).
News flash suckers its been 5 years and none of those have happened! Instead of another short post with weak jabs at me how about you come up with a compelling argument as to why you still think Farhan can win?
foppert1
A little bit going on. Still got enough time to make you squeal. All good.
foppert1
Ok. I didn’t know you wanted that.
1) Culture. No richards or egomaniacs. Universal respect in the organisation. Doesn’t matter whether you are taking the mound on opening day or washing his jockstrap, you get treated with respect. Awesome. I love it.
2) related to 1) but work ethic. You are a Giant, you work hard at getting better. They recruit accordingly and provide them with the resources that make that as easy as possible for players. Coaches, tech, infrastructure. Players love the Giants for that reason. Farhan and Kapler set the example. Players follow. Awesome. I love it.
3) the farm. Have provided the farm with all the resources they need to get better and make it. Coaches, tech, infrastructure, club culture of working hard. Surrounded them with expertise in conditioning, nutrition and obviously baseball knowledge. Given them a place to continue working on the off season under the guidance of the above. Results are appearing. Awesome. I love it.
4) tactics. They do it a bit different. Do the work required for knowing which player is the best fit for the scenarios that are likely to occur on that day. Get the players to put their ego in their back pocket and buy into that team first approach. They know the goal is to put players in positions in which they have the best chance of success.
Awesome. I love it.
5) Flexibility. Farhan has had the team in a position to pull the financial superstar trigger when opportunity arises. Despite the pressure, has shown the discipline required to do that. Hasn’t squandered flexibility on over committing on mid level talent or the volatile pitcher market. Has he failed to pull it off ? Yes. But it ain’t easy and he has staying the course. Awesome.
I love it.
6) they say the right things publicly in regards to fans, but act like they ignore the noise coming from ignorant fans who don’t appreciate what they are about. Awesome. I love it.
That would be the top of my “why I respect and defend” list. No apologies for the brown nosing. I’m good with that. In my eyes, they have earned that from me. I love what they are doing.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
THE RED SOX ARE BUYING !!!
BabeRuthsPiano
Why would they not
BabeRuthsPiano
Another good bullpen piece, I know alot of Sox fans are not crazy about Bloom but with the way our young core is gelling and these arm additions we are adding this team will be good for several years very soon. I’m started to buy Blooms concept and I’m loving it. Just wait to Mayer, and Jordan join them in the future. Great to be a Red Sox fan. I like the Win now concept with high priced free agents. But building from within is what I love.
its_happening
His concept is a clear step backward based on results.
BabeRuthsPiano
You couldn’t be more wrong.
its_happening
You mean he’s been successful than his predecessor? Sorry, I could not be more correct. Bloom’s concept neglects one important facet: winning.
JoeBrady
but with the way our young core is gelling
========================
This is neither pro-Bloom nor pro-DD, but right now, we have:
C-Wong
1B-Casas
2B-
SS-Mayer
3B-Devers
LF-Yoshida
CF-Duran
RF-
DH-
SP-Bello, Houck, Whitlock, Crawford
RP-Winc, Murphy, Schreiber
We have a fair amount of guys with 5 years of control left, who are current contributors. And only two of those guys get paid serious money. Slightly rose-colored glasses here, but I think we are in pretty good shape.
BabeRuthsPiano
I agree with you 100% it’s ashamed that most Sox fans are not catching on to Blooms concept. This club will have a great shot at multiple Championships in the near future
its_happening
They are closer to last than first. Aside from 2021 that has been consistent.
GeezerGeek
I would write in Roman Anthony in RF
JoeBrady
Llovera has a 28/4 and 24/6 K/W the past two years in AAA, albeit at a somewhat advanced age. Just like the two LAD prospects, he’s an underdog to make it, but from an odds perspective, I’d bet that one of the three turn into a decent BP piece.
Cooperdooper7
All the Bloom complainers are that way because they have been told over and over by the negative “stir up controversary for clicks” Boston media that has told them over and over that Bloom is in over his head…. and because most people can’t think for themselves, They believe everything they are told as to be true. Sound familiar? These are the same fans that thought Duran sucked, Casas was overhyped and sucks etc…… They also say Bloom botched the whole Xander thing…. well how many of you morons think they still should have ponied up for Bogaerts? If you think they still should have…. you are wrong again.
its_happening
They need SP. That has been a constant for the last few seasons. That cannot be excused. It’s a big reason why Boston isn’t near the top of the standings.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dodsox – Serious question, are you just trolling us?
How is it “building from within” when Bloom keeps acquiring and using pitchers and infielders that were already discarded numerous times before?
Jake Faria
Zack Littell
Tayler Scott
Matt Dermody
Ryan Sherriff
Zack Kelly
Joe Jacques
Justin Garza
Kaleb Ort
All pitchers discarded by other teams.
All acquired by Bloom and have pitched for the Red Sox this year.
When Bloom can start relying on homegrown talent instead of garbage bin rejects, THEN you can talk about “building from within”.
its_happening
Exactly. Imagine where the Bosox would be if they had a real leader looking at pitching for what is a very potent offense. Pitching has been a need for a while. Years, actually. Has Bloom acquired it? No. Not even close. Hard to buy in to Bloom when he’s squandering golden opportunities with a team who’s willing to go all-out to win World Series titles like they have the last 20 years.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Not sure what to think until I see him. Another Bloom strikeout guy.
I.M. Insane
Another one of Cora’s people. No surprise here.

What is his relationship to Cora? How is he “Cora’s people”?

I think he means a person of color. Which translates to “I’m a racist”.

Noah Song Update:
A decision on Song has to be made by July 28th.
His line from last night:
1.1 Inn, 5 ERs, 3BBs
Fastball has dropped from 96mph on July 4th to topping out at 90mph last night. DD’s strategy all along was to destoy the kids arm, then given him back.
Welcome back to Boston Noah, or is it ‘keep him Phillies you pay his medical bill’.
its_happening
28 innings pitched in MILB. Between 2019 and 2023. Destroying Song’s arm? Highly doubtful.
RSmith
. . . Because playing in recorded games is the only thing that can cause an injury? Tell that to my knee.
He shouldve been kept off the mound for months, while he ramped up.

Mr. Llovera Llovera is bombastic!

While the sox were diddling with this marginal Transaction Lucas giolito was snapped up by the Angels.

These 2 trades are good depth moves for the pen. Kiki was underperforming & redundant. We need Sale, Houck, Whitlock, McGuire & Story back to wipe out the pitching scabs at the bottom & stop the 2 bullpen games a week & stabilize/re-enforce the pen. Story is huge for the middle Defense & a huge power speed boost on an already potent offense. If we get healthy we can beat anybody in the post season & should make it in spite of a brutal schedule left after sf & sea for August/Sept/Oct.
We have tx,tb,balt, hou, nyy, tor & only a few cws & kc games in between. Going to need health!

It’s good to see Luke Jackson killing it in San Francisco.

The trade deadline has not been a historical strength of the GM. Disappointment has been the reaction for 3 years. Let’s hope the 4th year turns things around.
