The Giants placed infielder Thairo Estrada on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left hand. San Francisco also placed starter Anthony DeSclafani on the 15-day IL (retroactive to July 2) with shoulder fatigue. Mike Yastrzemski was activated from his own IL stint, while Brett Wisely was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Estrada’s injury is the most notable of today’s developments. It’s a brutal blow for the righty-swinging middle infielder. He was hit on the hand by an Adam Ottavino offering in last night’s loss to the Mets. Estrada played out the rest of the contest but apparently fractured his hand on the play.
It’s not clear how long he’ll be out of action, although Andrew Baggarly of the Athletic writes that it’s not believed to be as serious as the broken forearm that’ll cost teammate Mitch Haniger at least two and a half months. A lengthy absence seems a possibility, interrupting the best full season of his career. Estrada was hitting .272/.327/.434 with excellent defensive grades for his second base work.
Wisely steps right into the lineup at the keystone tonight, hitting eighth against Seattle pitcher Bryan Woo. The Giants are using Casey Schmitt at shortstop with Brandon Crawford battling some side discomfort. If Crawford avoids the injured list, Schmitt seems to be the top candidate for second base work while Estrada is down.
DeSclafani vacates a rotation spot, though it’s possible that’s influenced by the All-Star Break. San Francisco is off Thursday, so they won’t need a fifth starter until July 18. If DeSclafani is able to return when first eligible, they can squeeze an extra position player on the roster to weather the infield injuries.
Wilmer the Thrillmer
After literally coming one inch from hitting Wilmer Flores in the head with a 97 mph fastball, Ottavino hit the next batter Thairo Estrada in the hand with another heat seeking fastball. That was the 4th batter the Mets hit yesterday. Bad bad effing karma Mets.
86mets
Boo boo. The NL used the Mets for target practice ALL of last season. Nobody says a damn thing about Lindor getting hit in the mouth or Alonso getting drilled. But let them hit someone accidentally and suddenly they’re the bad guys. Boo freaking boo. Same thing was said about all the Mets getting hit last year. So right back at ya NL.
Candlestoked
@86mets Doesn’t justify yesterday’s unprofessional conduct, dipstick.
Blue Baron
@Candlestoked: No proof that there was any intent, Einstein.
Candlestoked
@blue balls Thank you for the Einstein comparison. I get a lot of that!
Blue Baron
@Candlestoked: At least you know you’re a dumba$$ then. Good for you.
Admitting to frequently being called Einstein is amazing. You obviously are incapable of grasping that it’s not a compliment.
Candlestoked
@blue hoo hoo Amazin’, am I? Like the fourth-place Mets, jajaja! Thanks, bf.
avenger65
When four players on the same team are hit, it sounds intentional. That or crappy pitching.
gmenfan
Hey, I’d rather be called Einsten than Epstien.
Wilmer the Thrillmer
Hey 86, boo hoo.
Braves_saints_celts
I hate to be that guy, but I will be him, a few weeks ago mets fans were being disgraceful saying Charlie Morton hit Alonzo on purpose and injured him even though everyone with a lip of sense could tell that wasn’t intentional. After that fans starting rallying behind each other saying hit acuna in the head etc. Then something like this happens to and you want to stick up saying it was an accident blah blah blah. He about hit someone in the head and then took out one of the giants better players for who knows how long. Don’t be smack talking when a met gets hit tomorrow. And no I don’t want that to happen at all, but what goes around comes around, just remember that.
avenger65
Morton apologized to Alonso after the game, and Alonso accepted it. End of story.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
@Braves Unfortunately “what goes around” does not always come back around. I.E. see example: Domingo German & Perfect Game.
marcfrombrooklyn
They are classless morons who rooted for Mets to get beaned. Classless morons.
Gmen777
I do hope next time the teams meet Doval has 102 pitch ready for a Mets player

Can you imagine what the Giants would be like if not for all these injuries—and all of them to major contributors?
YankeesBleacherCreature
…Says all underperforming contending teams.
pohle
they are an overperforming, middle class team though, who have seen a few key replacement players really step up while their front lines are banged up/not performing well. will be interesting to see how long their performance is kept up
avenger65
Like the Yankees?

and now Estrada? All for significant time. You are a “creature.”

Which makes Garvey’s 1207 consecutive game streak and the fact he’s not in the hall mind blowing.
Wilmer the Thrillmer
Pete, plus DeSclafani, Luke Jackson, Wood, Slater and Flores. Plus season ending injuries to Szapucki, Perez and potentially Gonzales and Ramos.
ElysianPark
Which you can say about a number of teams, including in the NL West
Pete'sView
But not quite at this rate.
stymeedone
Every team has injuries, and they usually happen to the players who play the most (more opportunity to get injured). The Detroit Tigers have 7 on the IL currently from just their starting pitchers. Not like the list above, where only some are out and some are back. Two types of teams win; Those that stay healthy and those with surprising depth. Its never good to see a player injured, but it does give other players opportunities. Enjoy watching them.
Pete'sView
Yeah, Tigers have been hit hard too. Most teams have injuries, I got that. But this year’s Giants have lost starters AND their backups at an alarming rate. In the list above, I forgot about Slater. This is a team not far from the top of the NL West and hardly ever getting to play with their full starting lineup. Not easy to do with the D-Backs, Dodgers and Padres in the same division.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Sucks for Estrada as he was having a breakout year.
mab51357
It just keeps getting worse. I understand all teams have injury troubles as the season unwinds, but I do hate when anyone is hit by pitches on the hands/arms. Haven’t checked other teams injury list’s this season but this now means every starting position player on the Giants has been on the injured list and it’s only the start of July. Also, have had our regular DH on the injured list. And I think the only starting pitcher not visiting the IL yet is Webb. It’s been pretty incredible. We’re running out of “next man up” players and they have had pretty good depth. Getting tough to watch. Feel bad for Thairo and Haniger.
Blue Baron
You’re just focused on the Giants. Cry me a river and whine me a vineyard. Every team has injuries.
foppert1
Nah. It’s been something else. Just like the Dodgers and their rotation. He is not crying. Just stating the facts of the matter.
Blue Baron
He’s crying and whining. No two ways about it.
foppert1
Ha ha. Funny stuff. Try reading it again without the hate.
Blue Baron
Try reading it again with some objectivity.
foppert1
Ha ha. Ok. My mistake, Einstein.
avenger65
Sounds like blue baron wants a little attention tonight.
Pete'sView
Blue Baron is unwilling to accept facts. Just blowin’ his blue horn.
mab51357
Wow. I acknowledged right from the start that everyone has injuries and I hadn’t looked at other team injuries. Just thought it was interesting that every position starters have gone down. Not sure if that’s happened before. Someone has no reading comprehension. Just posting for self gratification is my guess.
LFGMets (Metsin7)
Thats what happens when all your players are taught to stand right on top of the plate
Candlestoked
They figured it would be safer to stand in the strike zone.
Braves_saints_celts
I hope you felt the same when Alonzo was hit, or did you cry and whine with the rest of the mets fans saying Morton intentionally hit him?
LFGMets (Metsin7)
@Braves_saints_celts only an utter moron would think that pitch wasn’t intentional. Alonso talked smack to the Braves at home, which in turn caused the Braves to retaliate. I actually don’t blame the Braves as what Alonso did was disrespectful. But my only gripe is that he should of been hit square in the back, not by the hand/head area
Candlestoked
@LFG I don’t think Morton hit him on purpose and people often mistake me for Albert Einstein.
Braves_saints_celts
One man on base game tied Charlie Morton up in the count 0-1 and he hits him on purpose? Yeah okay buddy, at that point in the game we didn’t know we were going to win so why put an extra runner on base to potentially give up a homer making it 3-0? He wouldn’t have done that Alonzo smack talking or not. The braves wouldn’t be as good as they are if they played stupid baseball, and hitting him on purpose at that point in the game would have been stupid baseball. Charlie is old school he would have put it in his back if he were truly trying to beam him on purpose.
avenger65
Morton sought out Alonso after the game and apologized. Alonso accepted. End of story.
Blue Baron
Nobody’s making that mistake. I don’t have the time or crayons to explain it so you can actually understand.
But stupidity is not a crime, so you’re free to go.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
I mean, Alonso is from Australia so there is only so many ways to get a message across to an Australian.
stymeedone
Must be the hairstyle.
Candlestoked
@BlueBaronTrump Many thanks. I hope they let you earn back your crayon privileges real soon!
foppert1
Lol at Alonso being from Australian.
Oh the irony.
foppert1
Brutal. The Giants are beaten up !
Plenty are though. Take it on the chin and keep swinging.
avenger65
Take it on the chin? Nola, Justin Turner and Houck can all tell you about that.
JayRyder
This is too bad for Estrada. Definitely having a career year. But, get healthy, come back and help the team. That’s about it.
Pete'sView
Out for 6 weeks!
Jacksson13
Ottavino should be suspended immediately and remain suspended for as long as Estrada is out and unable to perform at his utmost ability. This one sided, “OOPS, S-O-R-R-Y, Well it’s just part of the game BS” must come to an end. When a team loses the services of a member of their 26 man roster due to being hit and injured by a pitched ball, then it is only fair and just that both the pitcher who threw the pitch AND his team also suffer a loss.
Additionally, MLB is overdue on taking decisive action to protect defenseless batters my minimizing the occurrence of HBP. Don’t know how many there have been at this point of the season but it does seem as though there are an excessive number taking place. And with each one that takes place there is an opportunity for a lost time resulting injury.
dasit
serious blunder by the yankees to get rid of him. i assume there was some roster crunch issue at the time but he was a highly regarded prospect and they literally sold him off
1958giants
Thairo has been awesome, one of Farhan’s best acquisitions. Now DeSclafani is another story, have lost all confidence in him, got bombed last year, and again this year. Recently when he pitches I say I guess this will have to be another comeback win since you know he will give up runs quickly and in big numbers, Glad he is on DL, maybe we can win when his replacement pitches….he is a bust.
gmenfan
Desclafani was such a head scratcher at the time of the extension. In his first year in SF, he feasted on bad teams and was feasted on by contenders, namely the Dodgers. Why a statistics-first front office like SF gave him a three year deal was quite confusing. His hot start has come imploding in on itself and he seems to have regressed into that Desclafani that we’ve come to know and loathe.
