Angels Place Zach Neto On Injured List, Outright Kevin Padlo

By Anthony Franco | August 4, 2023 at 6:37pm CDT

The Angels placed shortstop Zach Neto on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation. Brandon Drury was reinstated from his own IL stint to replace Neto on the active roster. Additionally, the Halos announced that corner infielder Kevin Padlo accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Neto told reporters he’s unsure about his return timetable, saying the back discomfort has been a lingering issue (relayed by Sam Blum of the Athletic). It’s his second IL stint in as many months. Neto also lost a few weeks between June and July after straining his oblique. They’ve interrupted a solid rookie campaign. The 22-year-old shortstop is hitting .241/.315/.411 with eight homers across 252 trips to the plate.

Drury can’t play shortstop, but his return at least backfills some of the infield depth they’re losing in Neto’s absence. Luis Rengifo can kick over from second base to cover shortstop with Drury taking the bulk of the reps at the keystone. The righty-swinging infielder has a .277/.322/.500 slash with 14 homers in 75 games during his first season in Orange County.

The Halos have outrighted Padlo twice this season. The right-handed hitting infielder has gotten into three games over a pair of brief MLB stints. He was designated for assignment after the Halos acquired C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk from Colorado last weekend. Padlo bypasses a chance at free agency to head back to Salt Lake, where he’s hitting .257/.385/.464 in 51 games.

The Angels & Padres prove that buying top heavy, mega superstars and not spreading your money around, is a very bad way to build a baseball team.

“Scintillating” is the only word to describe the sheer genius of his post.

What will mlb fan’s beautiful mind think of next? Will he tell an ingenious joke about a Rays waiver claim turning into a Cy Young contender? Will he make an astute observation about how the AL Central is bad? The people NEED answers!!!

As a Mariners fan, I tip my cap to the Angels …great game tonight. Loved the back and forth. When Seattle did something, it wasn’t long before the Angels answered back. Loved the showdown with Ohtani in the 9th with two guys on…man, that was dramatic. Next two games will be tight and down to the wire as well. Cheers

You should probably go back and look at all the moves they’ve made since the offseason. They haven’t actually signed a superstar since 2020.

Maybe Redon and Neto are starting their own league. Call it, The often injured league.
    Who would you add?

I would trade Neto for eight more Rendon’s.

I hope this has nothing to do with rushing him up to the Majors so quickly. He has been such a spark to this team, probably the brightest light after Ohtani. They should shut him down and make sure he is 100% for next season. He is too crucial to F around with.

After going for it at the deadline, that would be a really tough decision to make unless there is some glaring medical issue.

He’s young and aggressive on the bases. I’ve seen him bend like a pretzel and bounce off of some of the older beefier players, who know their limitations. Coaches should definitely shut him down until he is fully recovered.

Get some rest and feel better Neto. Such a good young and important player for us. If he can get healthy then he will be a role player next month and possibly into the playoffs.

Halo11fan you deserve to be taking a victory lap!! Youve long said the organization is poorly ran. Ive often agreed and once again you have been correct. Everyone that thought giolito was enough…..lol!!! The truth is until Arte is gone this franchise never turns it around. Theres too much proof in the sports world that under a bad owner things never get better.

I think most fans know we have a bad manager, a dime a dozen GM, poor scouting and an overly involved owner.

And they are as easily replaced as the order I listed.

What seems weird is how often Angel fans make excuses for Minasian.

What is it about the Angels? I like Trout and Ohtani but I want the Angels to lose. I just can’t stand the Angels. It might be a Mike Socia thing… I thought he was a clown. Same with Ausmus and Madden.

Nevin is worse than any of them. A real bum. An angry toddler running what apparently is the worst run team in baseball.

First of all if Zach Neto is really as tall as his listed 6’0″ then I’m 6 2″. Secondly Zach Neto really hasn’t played a ton of games in a year during his college years. Last year he had a long rest between college and reporting. If NBA rookies are taught to deal w the rigors of a long rookie season, maybe the Angels strategy of “aggressively promoting” inexperienced rookies for the daily rigors of a 162 game season leads to breakdowns.

We now have a solid lock on 4th place thanks entirely to a lack of good pitching.
