Angels Activate Mike Trout From Injured List

By Darragh McDonald | August 22, 2023 at 5:15pm CDT

The Angels are activating outfielder Mike Trout from the injured list, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Trout tells Sam Blum of The Athletic that he’s still sore but felt time was running out as the end of the season draws closer. The Angels have now officially announced the move, with outfielder Jordyn Adams optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move.

Trout, 32, had his season interrupted in early July by a left hamate fracture that required surgery to correct. At that time, the estimated timeline for his absence was given as four to eight weeks. He now returns in the midst of that window but, as mentioned, he’s not yet at 100% health.

Despite losing Trout, the Angels ended up treading water in July, going 12-11 and staying in the playoff race. That was enough to convince the club to not only take Shohei Ohtani off the trade market but also make aggressive upgrades, acquiring players like Lucas Giolito, C.J. Cron, Randal Grichuk and others, as well as promoting Nolan Schanuel just a few weeks after drafting him. Unfortunately, August has been a nightmare for the club, as they have gone 5-13 and are now nine games out of a playoff spot.

As Trout himself acknowledged, time is running short for the Angels to take advantage of the Trout-Ohtani combo, with the latter set to reach free agency in a couple of months. The playoff odds at FanGraphs give them just a 0.5% chance of making the postseason and that narrowing window seems to have spurred Trout to return quicker than he might have otherwise done. Despite having two of the best players in the world on the same team, the Angels haven’t finished above .500 since 2015 and haven’t made it to the playoffs since 2014.

The club will be hoping that the return of Trout to the lineup can spur a miraculous late-season charge in the final few weeks. Prior to the surgery, he was hitting .263/.369/.493 for a wRC+ of 136. That indicates he was 36% above the league average hitter but that’s actually a significant drop-off relative to his own standards. He hasn’t had a wRC+ lower than 160 since his 40-game debut as a teenager in 2011. Though even if he can get back to that lesser level of production, he will provide a massive boost to the club for the stretch run.

Joe, he really didn’t. There is no downside. Just because something hurts, it doesn’t mean you can damage it further through normal activity.

Go watch the end of Miracle again. Even if you blow it off as fiction, it’s still worth watching again.

@JoeBrady likes to be a contrarian. Trout’s hand has been in a cast for weeks with no activity. Now he’s ramping back up quickly to play pro sports. Of course, there will be soreness/pain. Doesn’t take a genius to deduce that.

I’m so happy the Angels went all in at the deadline. Now, they’ll:

      1. Miss the playoffs.
      2. Get nothing Ohtani.
      3. Get nothing for the prospects they wasted on rentals.

As an Astros fan, all I have to say is, “Angels, keep doing what you’re doing.”

Seriously? The trashstros fan take on this is they get nothing for Ohtani?

What did the Trashstros get for Verlander?
They got negative 2 players. They were such geniuses they let him walk and traded back for the player they let walk. in less than one season

I am glad you an Astros fan and not an Angels fan. My head hurts now.

Have you seen how much of the Verlander contract was paid down? It’s not a bad deal at all.

However, I understand your bitterness and hatred. You have the two best players in baseball in their prime with zero playoff wins. It’s embarrassing.

Ohtani will look great in a Dodger uniform in the playoffs.

We’ll see how those prospects pan out. They are corner outfielders two years away. I think it was a great deal considering that Steve Cohen paid down about half the JV contract. (I don’t remember the exact numbers.)

          Does getting a WSC count?

Seriously, those two are in no way comparative. The Angels gambled (and I agreed) on getting the final WC. The Astros had a decent shot at the WS. It is not even close to the same thing.

I am not really sure what you mean here Joe.

I was comparing the fact that he/ she was stating the Angels let Ohtani walk and get nothing, when the Astro’s did that exact same thing letting Verlander (or others) walk.
I know they won it all. I guess that maybe your point. But my point is it has happened on their side of the fence as well.

I understand wanting to respond to AF84’s trash comment but

The Astros obviously decided that having Verlander for 3 years and $122 million wasn’t as good as having him for 2..3 years and $40.5 million plus the value of the players that they traded away.

If you’re going to try to attack someone, you should do so with a logical argument.

          ============================
The difference is that the Astros were the co-favorites to win a WS. The Angels were an underdog to even make the playoffs.

FWIW, I had no problem with the Angels trying to make a run this year (they should’ve traded him in ’22), but the Astros keeping Verlander and the Angels keeping Ohtani are poor comps.

My point was more directed at: don’t come in and talk trash on a team you don’t root for. Baseball is very cyclical the Astros won’t be at the top forever, enjoy the view in front of you and quit looking in your rear view mirror Astro fans. It is inevitable, you will drop down and have to rebuild at some point.

I have no issue with fans doing it within their own threads, but there is no need to troll and stir it up on other fanbases threads.

By the way filihok, I wasn’t attacking. I was responding. LOL
Yeah yeah I know it is a feeble attempt to defend myself, but it’s all I got.

You’re right. It’s basically when people start throwing out the trashstros comments that I let out a few barbs. I tbink the Astros will be good for a while as long as they continue to churn out minor leaguers from nowhere and avoid too many Jose abreu esque contracts. 2006-2014 were tough years for Astros fans.

The Angels could probably have made a huge haul for Ohtani. Nobody knows what other teams were willing to part with, but it would certainly have been expected to be huge and the Angels farm system is poor. That said, the team went all in for a last chance.

The Angels are likely done at this point as Seattle and Texas have emerged as long term threats to replace the declining Astros. Trout is one of the greatest players of all time and Ohtani is on his way, but even the two of them can’t carry that franchise. Now, Trout is likely exiting his prime and has limited trade value with that monster contract. The Angels knew it was a long shot to make a run in the near future and they went all in on it. It backfired.

The Angels should start the total rebuild this offseason as they’re not going to be competitive for the next 3 years.

Too little too late should have traded Ohtani and built up the farm system instead of getting it for a 4th place finish. May as well trade Trout in the winter and go the Oakland As route because they will be contending for a division before the Angels will.

The Angels had an abysmal record against teams with winning records and an August schedule full of games against teams with winning records.

Not saying I called the wheels coming completely off but I did write in many pieces that I thought our hot streak last month had a lot more to do with the schedule than our talent level.

I don’t think so. How many tickets do you decide to buy in late August, if the team is not in contention? I don’t know the true number, but I’d guess that most tickets are bought in the pre-season, and for non-contenders, almost nothing in August & September.

I’m from NY, and I cannot imagine anyone buying Yankee or Mets tickets right now.

What a waste of a career. Signing a long term deal for a team that simply never will be in a position to compete for the highest honours made little sense at the time of inception and makes less sense with each passing year.

Also, when your comfortable with your playing situation, like where you live, and feel you’ve been treated fairly through your playing time, why would you want to go somewhere else?

Then again, this Trout kid is not done. He just might quiet you in a hurry. With or without Ohtani, if they spend the money, they will play with any team next year.
Bottom line: this Angels team has way more talent than a couple teams that may make it. Injuries suck, that’s sports.

Welcome back Mike Trout! I am hoping this starts a streak! Make this season somewhat respectable.

Who sits now? Renfroe and Girchuk are walk away FA, do you take away playing time from Moniak to play both of them?
I know Trout and Girchuk are still good friends so he may be easier to bring back next year. Play Moniakas much as possible to see what you got. Renfroe plays to give days off and occasional DH.

You can for a while. Just for a rough estimate, take a players BABIP, subtract his career BABIP (or .300 if has only a small amount of career ABs), double that and add it to his OPS. That’s his adjusted OPS.

          In this case, he had a 1.000 OPS thru with a .439 BABIP. (.300 -.439) * 2 +1.000 equals .722.

His hitting since then (28 games) is unbelievably bad with one HR in 106 ABs, and a 45/4 K/W.

He never looked like a core piece. His first 125 ABs produced great results, but the production with those peripherals was unsustainable. .

        A BABIP better than Ty Cobb. A 1o to 1 K to BB rate. A 33 percent k rate.

The BABIP has normalized and the other stuff has gotten worse.

And you do accidentally hit 300 for 125 ABs. It happens all the time.

I forgot you are the all mighty who knows everything about everything.
No you do not accidently hit .300 in 125ABs. It take an immense amount of skill for any of these players to even take the field. Now if we were talking about Adell. You’d be telling us he will get there, just give him time.

and….I started the statement saying he needed to make adjustments, or he would find himself as a 4th outfielder. It seems someone accidently forgot to read the whole statement. I wouldn’t expect anything less from you.

By the way . You may want to check your math skills. He was hitting .300through 230 ABs

          I don’t think he’ll ever steal 20 bases either.

He had one minor league home run a handful of extra base hits and he doesn’t hit the ball hard. So sue me that I think he’ll settle in at 10 to 12 HRs

          Here is what I said.
I was not saying it was an insult to call him a punch and judy hitter.

Shouldn’t every hitter take advantage of their home ballpark?

His profile is elite in that he has shown, thus far, he has a great eye, It definitely warrants the Angels taking him and hoping he carries it throughout his career. Every single person drafted is a HOPE. There is no such thing as a sure thing.

My opinion is a true Halo fan would have a lot less pessimism on a prospect. I know I am a glass half full person, but I think it is a lot more fun to cheer for the player, then it is to look for potential flaws.

I agree that they should have traded Ohtani. I think these huge contracts are boat anchors to the MLB clubs. Look at the Yankees all those massive contract and in last place in the East. I am willing to bet it is 10 to 1 on contracts of 7-10 years that the players being productive even 80% of the life of the contract. vs “the Pulols effect.

It isn’t just Moreno. Look as San Diego. They had the best farm system going and as soon as they sniffed success they traded away everyone and skyrocketed payroll, but look more like the Yankess vs the Braves.

But hey…it is THEIR money afterall.

A player doesn’t need to be productive for more than 80% of a contract for it to be a good contract for the team.

It’s amazing (sad) how many people don’t understand basic finances.

It’s like buying a car. When you buy a car you’re paying, say, $750 a month for a BRAND NEW car. By then end of the loan you’re paying $750 a month for a 6 YEAR OLD CAR – what a rip off – you could get a new car for that.

Everyone wants to talk about how a player “isn’t worth” his contract during the final seasons, but they never want to talk about how the players outperform their contracts in the beginning.

        Ignorance?
        Bootlicking?
        Brainwashed by capital holders?

        Reply
        • JoeBrady

That all depends on the contract and the age. My formula is that you need as many prime years as non-prime years. if you sign a 28 year old for 10 years, you will have maybe 4 prime years, 2 declining years, and 4 poorer years. That’s fine.

When you sign guys like Rendon, you only get two, maybe three good but not great years. It’s like that almost all the time.

That said, I like the car comparison. What I used to tell people was on the oil changes. If you paid $50 for a three-month oil change, the remaining value after 10 weeks is probably a lot less than 3/13 * $50. You might as well change it one week too early.

Trout’s laughable calculus for returning this season: He can’t let Ohtani have the stand-alone glory of the rest of the season tonCEMENT the fact that he’s the best Angels player ever and having the best Angels season ever.

Trout has been and will always be a postseason absentee.

      So……………..
Are you saying Trout is going on a tear and hitting 30HR’s in the last 37 games to take away from Ohtani?

Ohtani has had three great seasons to Trout’s 9.

Nice attempt to stir things up but I think you need to try a little harder. Right now we are just sitting in the stands wondering who the goofball (briar patch) is that ran out onto the field

That’s such an imbecilic take. Few people in this game deserves respect like Mike Trout.

So Trout had surgery and made it back early, but Rendon fouls one off his shin and he’s on the 60 day?

Trout is not coming back early, it’s about the expected time.

Rendon hit a ball off his leg so hard it caused the bone to bleed. What’s the time frame on that?

Scott Boras is the greatest player agent on the planet and I would never want my team to buy his players. He got over half a billion for Rendon and Strasburg after the world series

    Schanuel, Trout, Ohtani.

The top of this order is fun. Add to that, O’Hoppe, and there is more fun.

I would love to see the Angels get hot now and still make the playoffs and even make a run. It would be great to see all the drooling from the braindead trolls who come here to poop,.

Then again, I am a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

I think holding onto Ohtani was defensible. They had won 8-9 recently, and were only 4.5 games back of 1st. Fool’s gold maybe, but you can’t always be selling.

That said, both he and Trout should’ve been traded. They were playing .422 on 7/31/22, and a decent-sized payroll, and in no way looked like they were going to be a .550 team in 2023.

Moniak is going to be a star as well. Over the last 30 years I’ve reviewed all players with a 32 pct KRate and a 6 to 1 K to BB rate who have a war over 1.

    Listed below are those players.

    None.

But Moniak with his 36% KRate and 11 to 1 K to BB rate, will not only be the first, but is going to be a star.

Anyone who has a different opinion is a fake Angel fan.

There are people who like me. 🙂

But I agree, my comments are childish. But it is absurd if I express balanced or skeptical opinions of players, then I’m a fake fan

I’m being childish to make a point. It’s equally childish that my posts have to be all rainbows and unicorns or I’m a lesser fan. It’s absurd.

And if I have to have all the objectivity as someone pushing an agenda to be liked, then I’ll suffer the consequences. I don’t want to write posts like I’m CNN or Fox News. I’d rather be honest.

I would disagree with them being balanced.

I read the war of words between you both. I guess I am wondering why you felt you would mute someone, then continue to poke fun?

I found it entertaining up until that point. Then you lost me.

I gave a 300/400 upside comment about Schanuel, and because I don’t believe he’ll ever slug, my opinion is unbalanced.

If he even slugs a little at 300/400 he’s a borderline hall of famer.

How optimistic do people want me to be?

Are people upset because he has a weird profile to be drafted so high?

    What I so offensive?

I was referring to your muting and then continuing to make comments directed to the person you said you were muting.
      That comes across as unbalanced

I had not taken anyone’s side on the matter. That was between you two. There is no need for you to push your opinion on me.

That was childish. which I completely agree with. My later comments were to make a point.

There is nothing I could have written as actual comments which would have produced a non-insulting response.

        Lord knows I tried.

Just to add, Rod Carew. 328/398/429

    Wade Boggs 328/415/453

    Tony Gwynn 338/388/459.

Boggs and Gwynn were not taken early. Carew was before the draft.

It’s absurd anyone was offended that I wrote 300/400 but i doubt he’ll slug.

The fact that you continue to push your point of view says all I need to know.

By your own admission you muted the person. Yet you keep pushing your point of view.

You are the person who always has to get in the last word and you refuse to accept there is a possibility that some people see it differently.

You are coming across a lot worse than your counterpart ever was.

People may find this interesting. Schanuel is number 1 on the team in sweet spot contact, and next to last in distance. Naturally he’s dead last in launch angle.

My fear is they are going to try to change that swing, and he’ll lose that contact and OBP.

Some people think he will change that swing to get more lift without sacrificing what he’s great at. I think they are wrong. I believe If the Angels screw with him, a lot of things will suffer.

Let him be him. I hope the Angels didn’t draft him 11th in hopes he would become a different kind of player.

Welcome back Mike. Welcome to the end of our August and nightmare season. Hopefully you can help the team’s next 20 games not end with a 6-14 record like the last 20 did.

Can you convince Arte to sell? He might listen to you.

There is still time for a respectable finish.

      Schanuel can hit 10 dingers
Rengifo can play Gold Glove SS
      Moniak will steal 15 bases

Is that me just looking thought be rose colored sunglasses though?
