Angels Place Mike Trout On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | August 25, 2023 at 1:50pm CDT

August 25: Trout is now officially on the IL, per a club announcement, with Trey Cabbage recalled in a corresponding move.

August 24: The Angels are placing Mike Trout back on the 10-day injured list, general manager Perry Minasian informed reporters (including Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register). The three-time MVP had just returned from an IL stay on Tuesday.

Trout started in center field that night, going 1-4. He sat out both games of today’s doubleheader, ceding the position to Mickey Moniak. Minasian indicated that Trout remained in too much discomfort when hitting to continue playing through the injury. The GM didn’t provide a return timetable beyond noting that Trout won’t swing a bat for at least a few days.

His ’23 campaign was derailed when he broke the hamate bone in his left wrist on a swing. Trout underwent surgery on July 5 and was given a four-to-eight week recovery timetable. He briefly made it back around seven weeks later but evidently can’t proceed.

With five and a half weeks remaining on the schedule, it seems fair to wonder if Trout’s season could be in jeopardy. The Halos’ playoff hopes were already all but extinguished 48 hours ago. Since the 11-time All-Star’s effort to return, Los Angeles was swept in a three-game series by the Reds and lost Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher for the season. This will be their ninth straight year without a playoff appearance and, with the club now six games under .500, likely their eighth consecutive losing record.

As the Angels find themselves in the all too familiar position of playing out the string, they’ll presumably move cautiously with the future Hall of Famer. Trout has hit .263/.367/.490 over 362 plate appearances — still well above-average output but easily his worst rate stats since his age-19 rookie campaign. Moniak, who is hitting .282/.313/.496 through 278 trips to the dish, is likely to take over center field between Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk.

It’s not that how could they miss the postseason with those two players. It’s that how inept must the Angels be that they can build a competitive roster around 2 of the best players in the game. Tampa Bay patches together a roster with a bunch of rethreads and prospects and they continue to make the playoffs every season. Why couldn’t the Angels put together a decent enough team?

Trout’s season is basically done. So let’s look at even the last 7 seasons (including this one). You need to have at least 502 at-bats to qualify for end-of-the-year rankings/stats. In the past 7 seasons, how many times has Trout reached 502 at-bats? Zero.

Trout hasn’t reached 502 ABs since he was 25 years old (2016). Mantle famously faded after 30 years old, Mike’s slide is even sooner.

Its not the ownership. They spend money and make big moves. Its the training and medical staff.
They have mismanaged the health of their players at every turn. They ignored their players taking fetanyl. They used an unorthodox, unsound lifting protocol that nearly broke Trout’s back. They didn’t perform proper progressions on Trout’s hand recovery. Everyone knows Pujols made his miracle late career resurgence outside of Anaheim because he finally got legit foot care. Who knows what signs they missed with Ohtani.

Two mid-level prospects, at best, for a player who could singlehandedly take almost any contending team through the playoffs. These prospect obsessed individuals never cease to amaze. The most fascinating part is they never come back and discuss how over 90% of the prospects never pan out. All you hear is how you can never trade any of them because they’re all better than the guys who have already defied the odds and made it.

That doesn’t help a team like the Angels with literally no farm system. As someone else on here said, it doesn’t budge the needle.

If the Angels were going to move Ohtani, the time to do it was when the team trading for him was getting at least 2 playoff runs. Then they would have gotten much much more.

That is exactly what every single baseball writer that talked about Ohtani said he was worth in trade.

There is no way that the Angels would have gotten 2-3 top 25 overall prospects for him. That is simply delusional to think any team would give that up for 2 months of a player. Even Ohtani.

Or you could lose your mind on the thread and post the same thing 74 more times.

And they don’t need a DH only player on their roster the next 10 years. Trout is going to follow Tim Salmons path to a title. Not as THE MAN, but as a supporting cast member. “Seeing Minasian squirm”…Minasian has never been the problem down in Anaheim. You can’t change GMs every 3 yrs and expect success. The problem has always been the owner, Moreno. One of the GMs he fired, Jerry Dipoto, has built the kind of deep young pitching staff in Seattle, that Anaheim has always lusted after.

their overall depth level. Here’s what Moreno told Verducci about it:

“I kept saying, ‘What about Turner? Is this what we need?'” Moreno says. Minasian, he says, told him the Angels had multiple needs besides shortstop.

“I said, ‘You mean you need more than just Turner?'” Moreno says. “He says, ‘Yeah.’ So, it’s about the distribution of money. Is it one player who makes a splash? Or is it, ‘Hey, we can spend this money on two or three players.'”

And then all season long from Minasian defenders we had to hear when the going was good “Artie’s listening to Perry! He knows how to control him”
Minasian defenders blame Moreno. Nevin defenders blame Minasian. The fans blame the hitting and pitching coaches. The players blame the upstairs office. So everyone’s got someone to blame.

Honestly, it has been a major silver lining in a bad year. It would have been so easy to futilely chase a wild card spot (like they did two years ago when they traded PCA for Baez). I’m glad they recognized they needed to look to the future and leverage Cohen’s willingness to spend to acquire some premium prospects.

Back to the Angels, it’s understandable that they chased a playoff spot, but you have to wonder what the team would look like over the next few years if they’d traded Ohtani and others. Sucks for Angels fans.

But honestly I think Trout secured his bag and doesn’t care anymore. He will be okay or great if he’s healthy, he will possibly be amazing if he’s healthy; but if he isn’t, he got his money. I don’t think he’s squirming for a championship.

I am sure he isn’t mentally checked out of baseball as a skill set and a disciplined practice, but I am also suspecting he’s checked out of championship ambitions if he isn’t asking for a trade- that he will play his game and accept his place in history on his individual stats and not as it relates to the success or failure of the team in terms of seasonal efforts or chances to get to the post season, let alone win the World Series.

Why would you even think Trout has checked out mentally from ANYTHING? That statement alone makes little sense for a professional athlete, let alone one of the best to ever play the game.

Unless you have played the game at it’s highest level, THEN, add to that being one its elite , how could you even assume you know his mindset?

They know how the players think. They know what the front office is planning. Hell some of them think they know the future and can predict someone is going to be a bad draft pick.

It is entertaining to say the least.

Junior had that terrible fracture when he crashed into the wall. It took him several years to recover, but he was never the same.
Trout’s injuries aren’t event specific. I wonder if this current hand injury wasn’t caused in the weight room before the game. He never had a slight frame so it doesn’t make sense that he would break his hand swinging the bat.

Griffey injured his hammett bone in mid 95 season. He made it back later that year.. he actually had several monster years after that.

It makes perfect sense in that a hamate can break as easily as an UCL tear. Doesn’t matter how hard you throw or how big you are. It can just happen. I broke mine in April and it still bugs me.

It’s well known round handles aren’t particularly ergonomic and they put extra strain on the hamate bone, especially with hard impacts. It’s why axe handles are oval. Baseball bats are a little different since the entirety of the bat is the contact point rather than an axe having 1 or 2 potential contact points.

Trout makes very hard impacts on his swings, and his hamate broke. It’s a risk hitters take, and the risk increases with bat speed and hard contact rates. The hamate bone is pretty much not necessary and just sits there most of the time, but when a hitter makes the right kind of contact, it basically turns the bones in the hand/wrist into a hammer and punch on the hamate.

Arte is a terrible owner who only cares about selling tickets. Its why that in the last 8 seasons he has not allowed his GM’s to sign one pitcher to more than a 3 year deal. He gutted the baseball development and scouting departments and the team didn’t have an analytics department at all until Eppler. Minasian has gotten Arte to invest more in scouting, baseball development, and analytics staffs than the last 3 GM’s combined. Scouts don’t sell tickets. Trout, Ohtani, and other big time bats do. That is what is important to Arte.

Minasian did the best he could with the constraints Arte put him under. All blame for the team goes to Arte.

Trout ahs a full NTC and has said repeatedly that he does not want to be traded, including this season. The Angels cannot trade him without his consent and he won’t give it.

Minasian had a trade lined up for Ohtani last season at the deadline back when they could get a return commensurate with his talent, but Arte would not give his ok. The reason given at the time? Trout was on the IL. Arte wanted to make sure there was at least one superstar draw to keep people coming to the ballpark.

The Angels would have gotten two prospects for Ohtani as a rental. One to p100 prospect and one lower down the lists. That was not enough to justify tanking the season. It was also not enough to make up for the money that Ohtani brings in from international sponsorships and ticket sales.

When you said fool, you were looking in the mirror, right?

I was looking at the other team down the 5 fwy and realizing they don’t sign has beens like Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton and Anthony Rendon. The angels also gut their scouting department and refuse to make trades that even an arm chair GM like myself can identify as good trades.

Even if Trout remained in the lineup, that injury usually saps a player’s power for months. Given how badly they’ve played, plus the Ohtani injury, might as well just let him get healthy for 2024.

Other than likely losing Ohtani, Trout’s not the Angels biggest problem. At least he’ll probably play 80-100 games next season, maybe more. If he’s healthy at the deadline, theoretically the Angels could get him to waive his no trade clause and send him to a contender for prospects. If Moreno pays down some of that contract, those prospects could be pretty good too.

Rendon hasn’t played more than 58 games since 2019. He’s older than Trout, making more money ($38 million a year), also has a full no trade clause, and is signed through the end of 2026. Even if they get out from under at least some of Trout’s contract, they’re more than likely going to be stuck with the albatross that is Rendon’s deal for the next couple years.

Arte would have to eat a lot of the money owed to Trout and Rendon, but even then he’s going to have a tough time moving them if they’re not healthy by the trade deadline next year. That’s assuming they waive their no-trade clause.

Not trading Ohtani was a franchise altering error in judgement. To tell Angels fans they were going for it is insulting their intelligence. Going for it with Randall Grichuk, Lucas Giolito and CJ Cron? Really? Moreno’s reluctance to move Ohtani is all about his desire to compete with the Dodgers for exposure. This goes back to the name change from Anaheim to Los Angeles. He wants relevance in the LA market. Having Ohtani keeps attention on the Angels and sells tickets. Now, when Ohtani leaves via free agency, the Angels are toast because there is no indication that Mike Trout is ever going to be healthy enough to make an impact. Even if he is, he is not nearly enough. They could have gotten some great young players for Ohtani to help build this team into something relevant. Sure they have some young pieces but they are still in trouble

There wasn’t a reason not to play him. It’s not like he could do more damage. There are 3 things which could have resulted.

      1. He could play through the pain and it wouldn’t impact his game much.
      2. He could play through the pain, but it would hurt his game at the plate.
      3. He wouldn’t be able to play through the pain so he’d need more rest.

The answer was 3, and now the Angels know he needs more time for the wound to heal.

Ohtani has thrown 481 innings at the MLB level. As a relief pitcher, the most you’d expect a reliever to throw in this day and age is about 60 innings a year.

So, Ohtani has already pitched 8 injury free seasons in relief pitcher terms. The value is not comparable. Even if Ohtani needs surgery and is unable to pitch next year, he’s still far ahead as a starter.

Quite a few questionable comments on here. At this juncture, they are out of it. Let Trout heal.

As an athlete, and regardless of whether you should or shouldn’t play, if you feel like you have a chance you suck it up because even the chance is worth enduring the pain to a true competitor.

None of you know how these athletes feel and none of you sit in the room when they are talking to the trainers. So why comment on the whether the trainers are good or bad?

These are men that are responsible for seaking their own self care, for deciding if they should play or not, and for making good decisions for themselves in general.

I’m not going to blame an owner, manager, coach or trainer. These players have the final say, most of them make enough money to buy a second opinion if they want but ultimately these men want to compete. That is why they work out, push their bodies to the limit and play when they shouldn’t at times.

If there was still a reasonable chance of winning, Mr. Trout wouldn’t be in this article.
