Eduardo Rodriguez Not Traded; Vetoed Deal To Dodgers

By Tim Dierkes | August 1, 2023 at 5:05pm CDT

5:05pm: The Tigers did not trade Rodriguez, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.  If Rodriguez opts out of his contract after the season as expected, the 2023 trade deadline will have to be viewed as a missed opportunity for the club, as he is ineligible for a qualifying offer.  According to Rosenthal’s colleague Fabian Ardaya, Rodriguez vetoed the trade to the Dodgers due to “a desire to remain closer to family on the east coast.”

3:54pm: Tigers lefty Eduardo Rodriguez invoked his no-trade clause to kill a trade to the Dodgers, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.  Passan writes that a deal was in place pending Rodriguez’s approval, but is now dead.  Rodriguez’s contract allows him to block deals to ten teams annually, and the Dodgers were on his list.  Now, the Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris has approximately one hour before today’s trade deadline to find a new deal for Rodriguez.

Earlier this afternoon, the Tigers reached an agreement to send Rodriguez’s rotation-mate Michael Lorenzen to the Phillies for infield prospect Hao-Yu Lee.  Finding a match for Rodriguez is crucial for Detroit, because he’s possibly the best starting pitcher on the trade market, he’s ineligible for a qualifying offer after the season, and he’s likely to opt out of his remaining three years and $49MM.  The Tigers still have 19 teams to which Rodriguez cannot block a deal.

The Padres were said to have interest in Rodriguez, but that may have changed upon their acquisition of Rich Hill.  Plus, it’s possible Rodriguez’s aversion to the Dodgers is a geographical thing and the Padres are also on his list.  The Orioles, Reds, and Diamondbacks could still be possibilities.

The Dodgers, though they’ve added Lance Lynn, have now missed out on top targets Justin Verlander and Rodriguez.  It’s unclear on where they may turn; yesterday, Jack Harris of the L.A. Times suggested Plan C could be to do nothing.  The Cardinals’ Jack Flaherty is still a candidate to move.

I think from experience he doesn’t want to be on the big stage and expected to win a big game. He wants to be a big fish in a small pond with a smaller field of reporters and lights on him after every start.

I love all the morons hating on the city of Detroit that have never even been there! Downtown Detroit is awesome! A ton of things to do, great restaurants, old architecture, etc. The surrounding areas aren’t great, but there are trash ghettos in every big US city. Some people are so shallow!

A world series ring, love, not to mention you don’t pay the tax rate where you work, you pay it where you live. You could have your residence somewhere else. If tax rates were such a big deal big market teams couldn’t sign anyone. Now I will grant you they might have to pay a premium to make up for the tax rate, but apparently that works because they manage to sign some of the best talent.

You pay out of state taxes for work you do in other states, and you pay taxes in the state you live. California has the among the highest of both of those, in addition to outrageous property taxes. If Freddie had accepted the Braves’ five year offer, he’d have made more than he’s making in his current six year deal. That’s just the way it is, love.

You do not pay income tax based on where you live.

Athletes pay prorated taxes based on the number of games they play in different localities. All players play CA state tax for the games they play in CA.

Property tax rates are lower but housing prices are highest in nation in many high end locations, where baseball players live. Your property tax bill in high end areas probably higher than most places in the country. We haven’t even mentioned high sales tax and one of highest gas taxes. Let’s face it. You don’t ever win the tax game living in CA. Price you pay to live here.

Several major insurance companies are no longer issuing new homeowners policies in CA due to wildfires and rising cost to rebuild. What do you think that does to premiums in CA? Property taxes are high when your $10mm home in CA costs a fraction of that in Detroit. If you really want to properly compare it has to be apples to apples. Don’t make me laugh if you think you pay less property taxes in Detroit compared to Los Angeles. It’s not close.

The only way this nakes sense is the ERod camp blew this up at the very last minute and screwed the front office over.

This whole “taxes” thing as a reason for him vetoing this trade is a canard. First of all it’s only for a couple of months, so were not talking about a lot of money. Secondly, he’d stand to make more being in the playoffs than whatever amount of extra tax he’d have to pay. And thirdly, even if the extra tax was his reason (it’s not) it’s inconceivable that one or both teams wouldn’t agree to cover such a relatively modest amount of money to facilitate the deal.

You can’t ‘cover’ someone else taxes legally. You could possibly give him a ‘gift’ but I think that tops at something around $15k (though it might have gone up some). You would have to bump his salary which never seems to be done in MLB unless within the parameters of an extension.

I am in agreement with the rest of your thoughts, though I do believe the immediate income hit would be the most pressing thing a player would likely think about in the terms of money.

More importantly, why would these two front offices not go over it with the player before basically letting everyone know it’s about to happen. I mean, they knew he had a no-trade clause and both organizations come out looking like amateur organizations..

The parties could agree to rewrite his current contract to include any anticipated amount of money he’d need to cover his expenses – whatever they might be. That’s entirely legal. In short, he can accept a small extra payment, if he wants to.

“You would have to bump his salary which never seems to be done in MLB unless within the parameters of an extension.”

As a percentage of his monies owed, it would be miniscule (even if that really was his sole objection). No “extension” required.

Of course you can. It would have to be considered a gift on your next years taxes, but anyone can pay your tax bill for you if they choose to.

You can also be given a raise in salary to cover the difference in tax rates. When recruiting great employees we often took that into account.

Because of Proposition 13, California has a lower property tax rate than most States.
Michigan has a higher property tax rate than CA.
As the Houston Chronicle explained in a detailed analysis, Most Texans actually pay more State taxes than Most Californians.
No State income tax in Texas, but much higher property taxes and they nickel and dime you to death in other fees and taxes.

Flawed analysis for ultra wealthy. Lower property tax rate means nothing when the CA home is much more expensive than MI home. The wealthy pay a much larger portion of taxes in CA.

We haven’t even talked about the new mansion tax in City of LA where seller pays 4% on home sale between $5-10 million and 5.5% on home sale greater than $10 million. Proceeds go to fight homelessness, at least in name because we all know how great that’s working out in LA.

There is also constant attempts to raise highest tax bracket by a couple of percentage points or something else to keep dinging the wealthiest. That’s why so many ultra wealthy individuals and corporations have left in the last few years.

You misunderstand…MLB players are paid per game based on the location of their home team. In E-Rod’s case…he still has like $5M left to be paid this year. Will probably amount to hundred of thousands in tax saved.

I’d be willing to bet majority of mlb players don’t even think about the taxes. That’s the agents job, if he is good & honest. For most players it’s about the long term contract plus the money! Don’t believe them when they say it’s NOT about the money, they always take the bigger & longest deal.

In what world is there less traffic in Cincy than Detroit? I live close to Cincy and they’re all Sunday drivers plus the construction on 75 makes it impossible to move during peak traffic hours. Meanwhile, I go to Detroit frequently. There is congestion on 75 in Detroit as well. Only difference is that in Detroit everyone still goes 70 and you can get from A to B in about half the amount of time.

It’s no way about money. He’d make up far more lost in taxes when he plays in the playoffs. I understand wanting to say with family but as a ball player during the season it’s not like you’re home much anyway. Plus, it’s just two months and playoffs. Not wanting to compete for a championship is a strange choice for any athlete.

@Walk Off, I was hoping for the same. I was not very optimistic tho after he already nixed the first trade.

His and Baez’s contracts were crazy enough. All player options so they have security if they get hurt but opt outs to get paid more if they perform well. Didn’t realize that on top of that, at least ERod if not both have full NTC’s.

To make matters worse he’s not eligible for a QO so they won’t even get a pick if he opts out.

Or an initial we’re thinking about trading you to the Dodgers, would you be open to waiving the NTC? Unless Rodriguez changed his mind it makes the Tigers look incompetent.

Stop repeating the same (wrong) info.

E-Rod has a player opt out. He can choose to become a free agent at the end of this year or opt in to the final 3 years.

Dodgers would have 0 say in it.

And ALL MLB CONTRACTS ARE GUARANTEED. A MLB team cannot offer a non-guaranteed year unless it is specifically tied to a performance clause/bonus.

Read what I said below. I know it’s a player opt-out. The Dodgers usually have a good idea of when players aren’t as good anymore so for them, it’s obviously a better scenario for E-Rod to opt out than for him to opt in for 3 more seasons.

The Verlander deal is not a perfect comparison, but the 3rd year is about innings. If the Dodgers were to limit those innings in his 2nd year, than he wouldn’t get the 3rd year guarantee. It was reported that’s part of the concerns the Dodgers had, that final year

You don’t think it’s a possibilty that a team like the Dodgers, who usually have a history of driving up pitchers’ values, would make him look better over these last two months? It’s certainly been enticing for a lot of other pitchers.

But at the same time, he also knows he probably wouldn’t be as good on another team than someone like the Dodgers. I’m not saying it’s the determining factor, but I’m sure that played at least a little part in it

The more I think about it the more I think it’s the ability to face the AL Central opponents who collectively are the weakest hitting teams by division. Much worse than the NL West, including at Colorado where pitcher ERAs balloon. Also pitching in non-playoff atmosphere is mentally easier. This gives him a higher chance to maintain stats and performance in second half so he can opt out to a fat new contract compared to potentially having to keep remaining three year contact if he faltered with the Dodgers in second half.

Total tax burden. Google it. Its not just about the state income tax rate.

Income tax is relative. I had clients in PA that has a flat tax that paid much more than clients in other states that had a much higher rate but many potential tax credits and other adjustments.

I would bet anyone in an MLB income range has an exceptional tax attorney and accounting firm that they use to maximize the amount of money they keep. Most agents probably make both of those available to all their clients.

I get the vibe he doesn’t want to be on a high-visibility, big media market environment, hence signing with Detroit in FA after playing in Boston. That and/or it was simply something in the details of his contract where he wanted X assurances and LA wouldnt commit to it.

If I’m the Detroit Tigers I would not be happy with E-Rod. He is away from the team for most of the season last year for “personal reasons” and you’re completely accepting and handle the matter with flying colors. You signed him to a very generous contract with a opt out clause that it appears he will take at the end of the season. Then he turns down your trade to the Dodgers for what would have been 2 months of his life.

Maybe LA wanted him to opt in the final 3 years of his contract and he didn’t want to. He’ll definitely get a raise from his current $16.33 million average the next 3 years. What sucks about this for the Tigers is they lose a bit of leverage. Now the Orioles his original team can come in with a low offer and the Tigers will probably take it so they don’t lose him for nothing.

The Dodgers put starters of his caliber in the bullpen over September and October so that would CRUSH his market value. Not saying he should stay in Detroit, but he should accept a trade that would put him on a contender and immediately slot him into a 2 or 3 slot in the rotation…. come back to Boston!

So, the guy takes an unexpected leave during his first season and now he vetos a deal that would help the Tigers? WTF? He should have list his right to veto when he left the team but, oh thats right, Avila was still here. Better get what we can now, this guy isn’t welcomed in the D anymore.

Having lived in LA and traveled all around the country, I find all the LA hate quite hilarious. The traffic sucks, sure, but it sucks in every city. If you know how to do it, then you can really enjoy the great weather, great food, endless things to do, and all the, uh, beauty walking around.

Or you can pretend that you’re living the best life ever, holed up in Land-Locked Wherever.

Cohen got a top 50 SS prospect for a 38 year old pitcher with an era over 4.00

California has the highest population of any state. It would be troubling if they didn’t lead in job creation, especially after all the Covid shutdowns.

It’s probably against the CBA to officially discuss it, but it’s not like they can’t just say we really want you pitching for us next season ‘wink wink’, and ‘I really want to pitch here next season, particularly if you can somehow bring in some more talent, ‘wink wink’.

So the Dodgers get to a deal so late to leave no time for somewhere else to turn to obtain a starter? And they didn’t know that LA was on his no fly list? Isn’t that something you discuss first before getting all the pieces in place for a deal? Sounds like a miscalculation that no one would veto a trade to the Dodgers.

Now, the Dodgers fortunes are left with Grove, Sheehan, Miller, and [maybe] Pepiot. If they make the playoffs, it might be an early exit. A lot of effort for very little return. Lynn, Rosario, and Kike. Not nearly enough.

I don’t see how he opts into his contract after the season at this point, but good luck on the FA market next time around. He earned the right to exercise his NTC but this is the second time he’s invoked his family as a reason to either not play or not play for a team he was about to be traded to. The Tigers stood by him when he took off a large chunk of last season. Not being willing to play potentially for a WS and spending a couple months on the west coast when let’s face it, nowadays distance means nothing. Especially because he’ll be on the road with his team half the time anyway. I’m betting his agent won’t limit his suitors in FA because they are on the wrong coast. If I’m Detroit I ride him like Seabiscuit down the backstretch the rest of the season. 8 innings each start. Give him the C.C. Sabathia treatment.

@TFfI: They may have. Maybe he had conditions that LA wasn’t willing to meet, or maybe he wanted to be close to his family, and they thought they could pressure him into waiving anyway.

E-Rod just cost himself a lot of money. Between his refusal to communicate with the Tigers during his personal leave and leaving the Tigers high and dry today, he has proven his selfishness. He’s not a trustworthy teammate and warrants a discount since he’ll probably find a way to screw his next team as well.

He did not refuse to communicate in this case. Harris did. E-Rod specified which teams he would not accept a trade to. He was upfront about it when he signed. HARRIS is the one who didn’t read/listen to the information he had readily available, and waited until the last minute. What happened that he didn’t pivot back to Baltimore? I’m sure they would have preferred him to Flaherty. Did he draw such a hard line that they refused to take his calls? Did they offer the same players for E-Rod and Harris demanded more, even though he had no leverage? All we will ever know is that this was a FAILURE!

Well, that is total failure for wonderboy Harris. Can’t trade ERod and only got one playerfor Lorenzen. Then didn’t even try to trade anyone else? Wow, great first trade deadline. And I hope all the Tiger fans voice their feelings on ERod himself. He’s been a real treat for the Tigers. Thanks Al.

The Lorenzen trade was not bad. The Erod thing is mind boggling. I’m interested to see what Harris has to say about it and not trading Cisnero and Shreve. Leone fetched a decent 2B prospect from the Angels who I like. How do you get nothing for Shreve and Cisnero? Honestly that pisses me off as bad as the Erod thing.

None of y’all consider the fact that he wants to stay close to his family. Y’all think he is just a baseball playing machine and not a human. He doesn’t want to play with the dodgers get over it. It wasn’t to long ago he took a break from baseball all together for a few months. His family and mental health, if that was the case, should mean a lot more than oh yay I’m a dodger I can win more. Good on him for taking his own life and his family’s importance over moving far away from them just to win more games.

Harris absolutely f-ed up this trade deadline! One marginal minor league infielder and kept everyone, except our best pitcher currently! He makes AA look better every day, and that’s a chore to do. I was hoping he could get rid of Javy too, but he couldn’t even trade tradeable players so that didn’t happen

It makes sense to me. If he was having marital issues as recently as last season, I could see why he would feel like being away from his family for that long could be a problem. Especially if part of the problem was that he wasn’t around enough to help his wife with the kids with all the travel. Players are people just like us and obviously keeping his family together is more important to him than winning baseball games.

That was a lose, lose, lose for all parties involved. I was not aware he had a NTC so if it was filled up with West Coast teams, then the DET Front Office has to take some major heat.

They were 19 teams NOT on his list to deal with + where’s the conversations with the agent and/or the player as to his willingness to waive his NTC? Something has gone sideways, as pointed out here E-Rod likely has cost himself some $.

If healthy he’s still going to exceed the guarantee left on his remaining deal but between what happened in 2022 and now this,

“This” will have little to no effect on his FA. That he is not playing the rest of this season on a contender is on HARRIS. That he did not want to go to LAD was in writing, in his contract. As POBO, it is HARRIS’ job to know this. Every other team will know this happened. Every agent will know this happened. He’s a TOR arm, and a lefty. I doubt it will cost him a dime. After the game today, HARRIS was on the broadcast, never indicated that anything went awry, and hemmed and hawed his way around any commitment to working out an extension with him. What a Putz!

I am sure they had dialog with his agent though the process. He could have considered up until he made his decision. Big decisions like these are as cut and dry as they appear, especially if he is taking family and mental healthy into consideration. I respect ERod for being brave and knowing what he wants and whats important to him. I respect the Tigers for standing behind their players through issue like last year with ERod and the entire Austin Meadows struggle and Javy and his struggles. Loyalty can go a long way for some and it appears it has likely has some influence with ERod.

In the end, it’s unlikely the public will know exactly what happened but MLB insiders to some degree will. So if E-Rod finishes the year healthy and effective and ops out, what’s his ask? In total is ~$100M right?

In general what happened with him stepping away in 2021, specifically not staying in touch with the team AND now this… While it does take only one team to pay, you cannot this isn’t a consideration for the market

I guess ultimately we’ll get a clue when the MLBTR staff make their FA predictions and where he lands

      1) you would have to spend some time in E-Rods shoes, before making a statement like that.
      2) I’m sure both sides knew about the opt out, and his no trade clause. LA probably called with an offer, Harris probably said that sounds good, but I have to ask E-Rod. LA didn’t come up with enough money for R-Rod to forego the non trade clause. Trade over.
      Simple.

    Here’s what I believe happened….

Harris has said that E-Rod was part of the negotiations. Either he is lying, partly lying, or he’s telling the truth.

Let’s give the GM some benefit of doubt. After all, you have to assume Harris knows he has a no trade clause to that team.

Yet, at the last second, E-Rod invokes his no-trade clause. Why would that be?

The clues are in his leave of absence last year. He left the Tigers for 2 months to get his marriage on track. Without pay. Clearly, he values his family more than he values his salary. That’s not normal. And, when he addressed his leave of absence to the Tigers players last year, he referenced his family that lives down in Miami. Then, reports came out today that he prefers the east coast over the west coast so can remain close to his family.

Put it all together and this is what you got…. E-Rod screwed the Tigers and Dodgers at the last second. He led them to believe he would accept the trade because he, himself, was prepared to do just that. But, some last minute force came upon the scene and changed his mind.

Having been there and done that, I’ll tell you what that mysterious force was.

    His wife.

Ridiculously bad Trade Deadline for Scott Harris and the Tigers.

Nothing for E Rod and he walks as a free agent?!
Half the teams in MLB wanted E Rod including: Orioles, Rays, Reds,. Cubs, Phillies,
    Astros, Rangers. Padres, Yankees, Braves?!
    WTF!?
This is a huge fail for the Tigers who had players other teams wanted, but they could not cobble together deals to help jumpstart the rebuild?!

Al Avila had many trade deadlines like the one Scott Harris just had.

Wonder boy Harris just got exposed as the inexperienced novice rookie that he is. What a disaster for the Tigers! To have numerous trade chips and only come away with one player that’s at least 3 years away from the majors is unforgivable. This just sets the team back further in their never ending rebuild. It is very hard to be as bad as Avila but Harris is coming close. To have no backup plan for Erod is unbelievable. Other GMs have to be laughing. And then watching Harris stammering trying to explain his screw up and saying they’re happy that Erod is still with the team is pure BS. Stop it Harris! Put your tail between your legs and just shut up.
As for Erod, he screwed both the Tigers and LA big time. The Tigers stood by him when he bailed on the team last year and this is their reward for doing so. Let’s hope he opts out of the final 3 years of his contract. He put a dagger in the Tigers and the fans won’t be forgiving. Expect some massive boos the next time he pitches at home. He needs to be on the first bus out of town. This whole debacle is incredibly disappointing for the team and the fans. We certainly deserve better

I agree with you, but as I said just a few comments above, I don’t blame Harris anymore. He said E-Rod was part of the negotiation. I do believe that to be true. So, Harris was acting in good faith, finalizing the deal, but when presented to E-Rod to physically sign to waive his no-trade clause, he reneged. And, I’ll bet his wife made him do it.

The other interesting thing is that the Dodgers host the Tigers in September. Wouldn’t it be great to see Rodriguez face the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium? I’m sure the Dodger fans wouldn’t hold it against him. Hahaha…

So while Harris is getting heat, he should unless they genuinely thing they can extent E-Rod, you can argue the LAD front office likely should get as much heat if not more. The LAD front office has yet to put together a roster that can run through a full regular season + the post season and have a WS parade. Every year they do NOT, the asterisk* on 2020 gets bigger.

They had Lance Lynn in the fold and nothing else to compliment their starting rotation. Their rotation has been plagued by injury, ineffectiveness and the fact that everyone not name Urias, Lynn, has some workload limitations. But to recap the trade deadline, the LAD and their GREAT farm were outbid on

    Lucas Giolito
    Jordan Montgomery,
    Jack Flaherty
    Max Scherzer
    Justin Verlander
    Michael Lorenzen

now some of the above had NTC and could direct where they went, but still they chose not to go to LAD does say something.

Einstein’s definition of insanity is ” doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” yet once again the LAD front office is relying on Dave Roberts to “mix & match” his pitching staff to both

    1 win the NL West
2 navigate the Post Season to a WS championship

I do not believe Roberts can lead the LAD to a WS win from the Wild Card. He hasn’t been able to win as a #1 seed and in 2021 his mismanagement in the NLDS messed up their staff for the NLCS. Pitching wins in the post season, you can never have enough yet when you point to most all of the LAD post season exits it’s because they ran out of arms.
