The Angels are planning to recall right-hander Davis Daniel prior to today’s game, reports Sam Blum of The Athletic. The Halos currently have tonight’s starter listed as TBD, so it would seem the 26-year-old Daniel is in position to make his big league debut.
A seventh-round pick back in 2019, Davis originally had his contract selected to the big league roster last summer but didn’t appear in a game before being optioned back to Triple-A Salt Lake. He’s spent the bulk of the season on the injured list due to a shoulder strain but returned to the mound in early August. He’s worked 25 1/3 innings between rehab stints with the Angels’ Rookie-ball and Class-A affiliates, pitching to a 1.78 ERA with an outstanding 37-to-5 K/BB ratio in that time (against much younger and less experienced competition, of course).
While Daniel has spent this year rehabbing and facing only lower-level minor leaguers as he ramps back up, he did log 102 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level a year ago. In that time, he pitched to a 4.49 ERA in a very hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League environment, striking out 19.4% of his opponents against a 7.5% walk rate.
Daniel ranked among the Angels’ top 30 prospects on most publications heading into the 2022 season, but his velocity and strikeouts were down last year — and this year’s shoulder strain has only further led to concern. Injuries have been an issue for the former Auburn hurler, who also had Tommy John surgery during his draft season. Davis no longer ranks within the Angels’ top 30 prospects at either MLB.com or Baseball America, but FanGraphs tabs him 21st among Anaheim farmhands.
Daniel is fully rested and is stretched out to the point where he’s a clear option to start tonight’s game. He pitched 5 1/3 innings in his most recent start on Aug. 29, and he went six innings and five innings, respectively, in his two starts prior to that outing. He could also provide bulk innings behind an opener if the Halos choose to go that route. That’s not a tactic they’ve used in 2023, but they did turn to openers and bullpen games on occasion last year.
Very happy for Davis. I interviewed him in A and AA ball very nice guy who overcame sone significant injuries to get here.
80-grade picture
Yeah, ‘cause HE’S the answer.
Dayum Daniel
What’s going on with Rendon? I have MLBN on in my office but muted because I have company. Weird headline about pretending to no habla ingles to avoid the media?
Angels need to dump Salt Lake and get a AAA team in SoCal. Then they could evaluate the players with half the games in a similar environment as the Big A. For this article, Davis wouldn’t be judged against “A” competition to see if he is ready.
Well, at least I a more equatable environment.
That is a big wish, to get a AAA team in SoCal. Maybe modify the Lancaster or Adelanto stadiums to AAA standards? I love going to minor league games, so I am all for it.
Anywhere would do.
You are really on point.
Angels brass are more then open to it for one reason, and I’ll use myself as an example why.
I’d love to go see a SLC AAA game.
But since I’m one of those evil Californians and a rare one who was ACTUALLY born here…
I can’t go to Utah anymore.
Despite those visit Utah commercials,
We’ve been told to stay out.
Why do I think you have some sort of “sorted history” haaaaaaaa
AngelsFan1972, Utah’s Governer said stay out.
But yes, i have had experiences.
Been going since the 1970s without issue until the last few years.
I have been to Zion a few times. But never ventured much further.
They seemed to have no issue accepting my money passing through.
AngelsFan1972. Just like the 70s again.
How will this Davis, this weeks call up kid do?
One last Utah….
Zion an absolute zoo thanks to the Vegas bus day trip tours.
Try Bryce, it’s awesome as is the little known Cedar Breaks. Nice change from my Sierra stomping grounds. Beautiful country.
My worst issue encountered was at a rental home at Panguitch lake. The fireman neihbor does not like Californians.
MC – My gut feeling on Davis is he will get in a good start or two, but have a few bad ones as well. I like that the Angels are giving him a look. I like the idea of getting the kids a taste of the bigs, wet their appetite to want more. I don’t see him getting in more than 4 or 5 starts. If he goes 5+ innings in 3 of them, it is a good thing.
Been saying this for years.
I thought this post was about Davis and his promotion.
Yet here we read about Rendon and defense of his behavior. It goes on and on and on. Someone tell (non)Halofan11 Rendon has created his own adversarial behavior. This isn’t the first time he has “misbehaved” in public. I get it not everyone is cut out to be the press poster child but Rendon needs to get out on the field and shut his mouth. If he doesn’t like the press, his performance on the FIELD should do all his talking for him.
It’s a thread, not a post, and sfes added a post about Rendon, which I replied. He seemed to appreciate my response.
Was that not appropriate? Should only posts germane to the topic be addressed? .
Did you break protocol which a couple responses on this thread?
My mom only spoke French, so i’m asking…
Don’t American moms say “most times it’s better to say nothing”?
MC Homer.
Was that to me about Rendon?
Halo, On the fence. But if you want to know..
I see both sides.
On one hand i say just smile and politely say no comment.
On the other…i’d snap worse than him.
He didn’t intentionally foul a ball off his leg, nor does he want to be hurt. Nor did he want to get hit in the hands last year. Bad luck
HALO, After seeing how mixed up my replies are, I get your point. I should start my responses with the username that I am replying to
I’ll tell you, that’s what he should have done.
I just find it ironic that one person insulted someone in private, and the other did it all over the internet.
On this issue, I know which side I’m taking.
Halo, just like i’m trying to learn when being aggressively cut off on the freeway.
Just wave and say “Hi, nice to see you today because we are alive”.
Let it go.
Let the water flow.
ahhhh.
YEAH RIGHT!
I don’t really get offended all that much. My dad had people literally trying to kill him, today some people get worked up if you call someone a punch and judy hitter.
Yeah. Aint no mellow Californians on the freeway. You could start a reality show with the drama i see every day.
Saw 2 mopar hellcats trying to pit manuever each other weaving across 6 lanes doing 100+ mph at 4 am on the wide open 5 freeway in OC last week. Scary. Talk about road rage.
Nope. Hit respond to 1972.
No dog in this race.
Apologies these responses are all showing out of order, at least on my end.
Since we are all still here,
I’d love to hear some ideas. Because i see nothing but doom.
What can this team do to get better this off season?
Sarcasm and the paranormal aside.
Is it possible and how?
My opinion. Spend the money on the bullpen. Get some people who can actually spot talent. Go to a five man rotation with Anderson on the outside looking in.
Let Ward and Trout be your two outfielders.. Decide on Adell and Moniak.
Neto, Drury, Schanule. DH/3B Rendon, Rengifo.
Don’t expect to win. But if the pitchers revert to form, and the bullpen is actually a bullpen, they can.
Find out if most of these guys can be useful players. There are so many question marks that playing whack a mole is going to be a losing game.
Then in 2025, see what questions were answered positively.
Halo, agreed. No more blowpen. Need a functioning bullpen.
My fear, besides the pitching, is that this team has shown a habit of going into such deep dead cold spells 2 years in a row.
Can’t attract free agents.
Nothing left to trade.
When you win games you should win, and battle for close games without imploding, you don’t often go into slumps.
I became a huge believer in the pen when I noticed how important it was to those 2000 teams.
For more than ten years it’s been completely rejected.
Anyway, build a pen, find out what you have.
I’d also bring in a new GM and coaching staff. There is a disconnect between the analytics department and coaching staff.
