Mets closer Edwin Díaz will not return to a major league mound in 2023, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The two-time All-Star has not suffered a setback, and he will continue to throw bullpen sessions, but the team does not want to jeopardize his health by rushing him back for the tail end of what has become a lost season. When Díaz tore his patellar tendon during the World Baseball Classic, the Mets were preseason favorites for an NL postseason berth. Six months later, they find themselves two losses away from a losing campaign.
Díaz always hoped to come back during the regular season – an ambitious goal, but one within the realm of possibility. He deserves credit for how effectively he has worked toward that objective. As pitching coach Jeremy Hefner told DiComo, the flamethrowing righty has progressed to a point where he could, theoretically, be back in the majors before the end of the year. Indeed, if the Mets were in a more competitive position, he might have already made his return.
However, Hefner expressed concern about the star closer re-aggravating his leg injury while running to make a defensive play or avoiding a comebacker to the mound. Thus, Díaz will have to wait until next March to pitch another game at Citi Field.
New York may not be playing for much this September, but it still comes as disheartening news that Díaz won’t rejoin the ’pen. Mets relievers rank 13th in the National League with a 4.53 ERA and last with -0.1 FanGraphs WAR. They have had particular trouble since the trade deadline, pitching to a 5.68 ERA and -0.4 fWAR.
In addition to Díaz, Sean Reid-Foley and John Curtiss are on the injured list, while David Robertson was dealt to Miami at the deadline. Meanwhile, four of the eight relievers on the Mets’ active roster have an ERA over five. This bullpen could certainly use Díaz and his electric arm – for a morale boost, if nothing else – but admittedly, that’s hardly a reason to risk his health. He is on track to return at full strength in 2024.

Oh really? ;’)

Probably for the best at this point
@DaOldDerbyBastard
It would have been idiotic to let him come back. Just prepare for next year. Plus they need their bullpen to keep playing terrible to get that top 6 pick.

For the best.

I’m glad that Diaz prioritized his health over trying to return for just a few games because now he can work all winter to getting himself up to full strength.

So disappointing
No Timmy Trumpet either

WOW!!! A wise decision by the Mets! Shock and awe!
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
Maybe another top 100 prospect for Diaz and some cash? Texas is 3 for its last 19 save opportunities (even if half those were blown before the 9th, that still sucks). I mean… I’d probably rather be a Mets fan at this point since they have hope for a real bullpen nect year. Texas has Chapman, Stratton, and Smith as free agents. That’s 2 of their best 3. How does a team underperform it’s expected win loss by 10 games each season??? I’d trade the farm for Bednar or Classe…
avenger65
In Seager we Trust: From a Texas perspective, Diaz going to the Rangers makes perfect sense. From any other angle, it ain’t gonna happen.
raregokus
What farm?
HatlessPete
Trading the farm for a closer, even an elite one, generally would not be a good call.
miltpappas
Another reason why the WBC is stupid. I know a lot of people like it, but it’s pointless and this isn’t the first serious, needless injury to come from it and it won’t be the last. I expect similar from that mid-season NBA foolishness.
TheOtherMikeD
If he was going to throw, why is the WBC any different than spring training? I guess teams should skip that too. Just show up on May 1 and get it going.
njbirdsfan
Throwing in competition and national pride is likely to make guys try too hard too fast and do things that may not normally do.
ChuckyNJ
Milt doesn’t follow soccer where domestic cups and Champions League are just as important as the domestic leagues.
njbirdsfan
Except any trophies you win from those tournaments go to the team, not the country your guy happens to represent.
And let’s be honest…the WBC will never be the World Cup. It’s just not. Because you’ve got countries where it’s the national sport and already popular, and the rest of the field is filled with countries who have to stretch the limits of genealogy to qualify.
Do we really think some kid in Italy is going to drop football for baseball when the players for Italy don’t come from there, probably don’t speak the language and there’s a good chance have never even visited Italy?
JoeBrady
Basketball managed to spread overseas. BB will too. If nothing else, it has probably made the MLB much more popular in Japan, SK, etc. The Ohtani/Trout matchup is the kid of thing that would be laughed at in Hollywood as being too obvious.
ArianaGrandSlam
But he wasn’t as good as the article sounds just last year he was pretty good and that’s all.
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Edwin Diaz is not good? Okay. Gotcha.
Slow day at work
You might want to read Ariana’s comment again. They literally said Diaz was pretty good.
Lyman Bostock
Only the Mets would be dumb enough to even entertain something so foolish. My goodness it’s embarrassing.
rct
They’re not entertaining it. Read the article. Diaz wanted to come back. It was not the Mets pushing for it. It was Diaz. The Mets are saying ‘no’. Take off the hate goggles for a second.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Mets need a total rebuild. Gotta get rid of deteriorating contracts (Marte e.g.) while there’s still a glimmer of life in the those players.
Gonna be painful if it doesn’t work, but gotta play the kids next year and find out if Baty et al are gonna be the real deal.
Would hate to see him go, but McNeil could bring back something decent from a team looking for a lead-off or #2 hitter. Yankees? Giants? Cubbies?
pdqguy23
McNeil is under contract. Why fix what’s not broken ? He’s decent
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
More than decent. But ya gotta give to get.
ChuckyNJ
The Yankees have their own roster issues to take care of without indulging the ballclub across the Triborough Bridge.
DanzigInTheDark
Disagree on the need for a full rebuild – mostly because there is a strong core there (Lindor/Nimmo/Alonso/Alvarez) and there are enough young position player prospects on hand to easily backfill any holes that injury might create.
The pitching side is the issue – only Quintana and Senga locked in to next years rotation, with Diaz the only plus reliever in the pen. I could see McNeil being expendable if they think they can get good results out of the guys that would replace him (Mauricio/Acuña) and if controllable starting pitching came back, but they’re just not in a position to tear it all down.
JoeBrady
There should be no such thing as a rebuild with an almost $400M team. At this point, the 2024 payroll is probably $100M under 2023. Signing Yamamoto, Lee, Chapman and Monty will cost far less than that.
rct
@JoeBrady: “At this point, the 2024 payroll is probably $100M under 2023”
According to baseball-reference, with Arbitration increases, the Mets payroll for 2024 is close to $300 million. Even if you remove the money they’re paying teams to cover the salaries of Verlander, Scherzer, and McCann, their payroll is still ~$240 million.
Roll
@rct with everything except arbitration according to roster resource they are a little under 220 which includes the 20 or so mil for benefits and bonuses and money owed to other players like verlander and scherzer etc etc.
If you look at arbitration outside of Alonso and Peterson and maybe Smith, i cant see any of them getting more than a million increase and thats not including the people you letting go. I would expect their arbitration to go to 40mil instead of 25 with most of that increase going to alonso and the other increases being washed for non tenders like brigham coonrod and voggelbach. So rough math i see them sitting around 260ish mil.
Still a lot of holes to fill though so will be interesting to see how they roll with it.

Acuna isn’t going to make enough contact to be an everyday player. There is a reason the Braves didn’t try to sign him.
DanzigInTheDark
Acuna showed a better batted ball profile after coming over in the trade – he’s hitting less ground balls and driving the ball a bit while still keeping his K rate relatively low. Not saying he’s fixed, just that he’s showing the ability to make better contact. I think he’s got a good shot at becoming at least a solid utility player who can play few positions, steal some bases, and run into one occasionally.
rct
Mets don’t need a total rebuild. They need to add some pitching this offseason and then some more next offseason. I don’t think they’ll really spend much on position players this offseason. They’ll play Alvarez, Baty, Mauricio, and Vientos heavily next year. Possibly even Acuña and/or Gilbert by year’s end. Run out Senga, Quintana (who if he pitches well could be traded at the deadline), and David Peterson as the starters with a free agent addition or two (or Megill/Butto/Lucchesi as options to round out the staff). Get Diaz back and sign some bullpen help. Shoot for 80-85 wins. To me, that seems like the plan for 2024.
shortstop
WBC ruined the Mets season!!!!!! /s
GarryHarris
Perhaps team chemistry, perhaps season long slumps, perhaps a non murially beneficial lineu and rotation and pen and bench, perhaps injuries, perhaps all of it.
HatlessPete
Oh come on that’s not even remotely logical. First of all no single reliever could possibly be that influential to a teams full season record. The game just simply doesn’t work that way. Secondly, freak injuries just happen sometimes even outside of baseball activities. Take for example Joel Zumaya, former tigers closer who injured himself playing guitar hero. I get that it’s frustrating but it’s just bad luck and it isn’t the wbc’s fault. Guys get hurt in spring training all the time but nobody’s suggesting we get rid of that. At the end of the day there is always some risk of accident and injury in day to day life, let alone for folks exerting themselves to play a sport professionally. Its just how things are.
GarryHarris
Did anyone think Edwin Diaz would take the mound this year?

Pretty wise decision. Don’t want to hurt his trade value
