Matt Manning Out For Season With Fractured Foot

By Anthony Franco | September 6, 2023 at 9:32pm CDT

Tigers starter Matt Manning fractured his right foot during tonight’s loss to the Yankees, tweets Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. A Giancarlo Stanton line drive that left the bat at a blistering 119.5 MPH hit Manning’s foot in the first inning. While he fielded the ball and recorded the out, Manning was replaced at the start of the second frame.

It’s astoundingly poor luck for Manning, who also broke a bone in the same foot when he was struck by a comebacker in April. McCosky notes that this fracture occurred in a different area, though that’ll be of little consolation with his third MLB season being cut short.

Manning has battled injuries in each of the last two seasons. He lost time with shoulder and forearm injuries a year ago. The foot issues are more clearly fluke occurrences, though they’ll cost him reps just the same. Manning made 14 starts this year, logging 77 innings of 3.62 ERA ball.

The former ninth overall pick hasn’t missed many bats at the big league level. He struck out under 16% of batters faced this season and has fanned only 16.1% of opponents for his career. Manning has shown above-average control and posted consecutive sub-4.00 ERA seasons, though, so he should have a rotation spot secure for 2024.

What a ballsy thing to say! Manning has just cracked the big leagues. Some may even say he has burst into any discussions about the top starter on the Tigers. I think you’re nuts.

Imagine where Stanton would rank in career strikeouts if not for his cavalcade of injuries.

Guy can’t get a break (pun intended). All the best Matt. Next season just has to be better injury wise. Right?

They still are as long as they can all stay on the field next year.

Mize and Turnbull should be sent out in package deal that brings back a proven MLB starter from a tanking team.

Manning, Skubal, and Olson are the only young guns who will deliver next year. ERod won’t be worth what he’ll want if he opts out. All the sudden pitching will go from.a strength to a weakness if they don’t make some shrewd moves.

Turnbull is damaged goods and will be off the roster shortly. Mize still has a relatively high ceiling. He was too over reliant on a splitter that was also hurting his mechanics. He’ll be a solid 3-4 guy in someone’s rotation, maybe better once he cleans up his pitch mix. Overall, I think their pitching will be ok.
Infield defense and corner outfield are much bigger problems, as neither Greene nor Carpenter seem capable of playing Left, and Malloy seems incapable of lateral movement.

The upcoming free agency features a lot of good starters. The Tigers won’t have to part with Mize to add to their rotation.

I didn’t fully realize the extent of animosity between Turnbull and the Tigers until recently. I say screw Turnbull for his shenanigans. I hope they tender him and let him be pssst about playing for Detroit.

Hopefully, he will heal and be ready for next year. Hopefully, people will realize that low strikeout levels, when combined with solid ERAs, is an indication that someone can actually pitch. FIP is a nice metric, you do realize there are 8 other players out on the field with the pitcher? Its not a problem if a pitcher uses them. Saves pitches. Lets them go deeper into games, good stuff.

Didn’t Manning have an ERA under 1.00 for his last 3 starts or something close to that? “The art of pitching” as Mr Price would say.

Manning has that “late movement” and he really “gets em the buggy whip.” He’ll be an excellent pitcher, maybe even a solid number two, if he continues to develop.

Perhaps The Tigers could use this opening to evaluate another young AAA pitcher?? Hinch did say that evaluating players was their intent this season….

There is zero arms in the minors worthy of a starter audition especially in Toledo. Ty Mattison is being groomed as a leverage reliever in AA, he could be a worth a look however Harris has made it very clear, that players advance when they are controlling thier entire game not just a facet where they Excell
