Astros Interested In Craig Counsell

By Mark Polishuk | October 31, 2023 at 9:07pm CDT

With Craig Counsell already garnering interesting from the Mets and Guardians, it only makes sense that another team with a managerial vacancy would also look into the soon-to-be free agent skipper.  According to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Astros “have expressed interest” in Counsell, “but it’s unclear how serious their pursuit would be.”

It could be that Houston is just doing its due diligence in checking in on Counsell, given his impressive track record over nine seasons with the Brewers.  The Astros naturally expect to contend again in 2024, so hiring a manager like Counsell who has proven he can consistently get teams into the postseason would seem like a logical way to fill the big shoes left behind by the retiring Dusty Baker.

Since it has been barely over a week since the Astros were eliminated from the ALCS and Baker announced his retirement, the club’s managerial search has yet to really kick into full gear.  Bench coach Joe Espada and former Tigers/Angels manager Brad Ausmus are seen as two of the top potential candidates, but word has yet to filter out about what other names Houston could be considering for the job.

As for Counsell, his contract with the Brewers officially ends today, so the manager will be fully available as of Wednesday to be hired by another team.  This doesn’t mean that a decision is necessarily coming quickly, as MLB Network’s Jon Morosi (X link) notes that there isn’t any known timeline Counsell might have in choosing his next job.  The potential inclusion of the Astros adds another wrinkle to a list of suitors that is already three teams deep.

The Brewers already granted the Mets and Guardians permission to interview Counsell, while Hogg hears from a source that the Brewers themselves “have begun the process of requesting interviews with potential managerial replacements.”  This is another natural due-diligence move since obviously the Crew don’t want to start a managerial search from scratch if Counsell does leave, though it does represent some “uncertainty” within Milwaukee’s front office over what Counsell’s decision will be.

By this point, it appears as though Counsell will certainly become the highest-paid manager in the sport, as it’s hard to imagine his next deal wouldn’t top the $4.5MM average annual salary Terry Francona received as the Guards’ former manager.  The Mets and owner Steve Cohen could certainly throw their financial weight around if it means bringing Counsell into the fold, but Hogg argues that the Brewers have no reason to not offer Counsell a big raise, as he was already making a $3.5MM salary.  As Hogg further notes, a manager’s salary is comparatively small in relation to the salaries that even a smaller-market team like the Brewers give to average players.

I think a number of teams will have interest in him and while I have no love for the Astros I think it would be a good fit for both.

While the Brewers always seem to be competitive, was it him, Sterns or both together? It just seems like a lot of money for someone who lacks a championship resume.

Guess we’ll find out. The team does a good job with talent evaluation and player development, which are important for any team, but especially so for one that’s outside the top media markets and can’t afford to miss on big contracts often.

It would be interesting, but I don’t think it will happen. I certainly wouldn’t mind him in Houston though!

The Padres as Preller apparently has no idea how to pick a Manager

Preller has picked Green and Tingler. Quite a few articles and comments on this site about how Peter Seidler overrode Preller’s decision to hire Shildt in 2021 and hired Melvin instead. So this will be his 3rd hire.

Green wasnt a bad manager. He just presided over a rebuild. Tingler took the team to the playoffs then wilted under the pressure of being the favorites in the West in 2021. Melvin did much the same in his tenure.

I’m sure the Padres are at least interested in interviewing Counsell. Whether or not they get that chance is a different discussion.

I still think Shildt is the guy Preller wants.

Padres put $50+ million in 2023 salaries on the credit card and the ownership collective has concern about their debt/income ratio. Should be interesting in San Diego this hot stove.

Seems like history is repeating itself. “Rock Star” GM Preller turns the Baseball world upside down spending with reckless abandon only to jettison the shiny new toys off the roster within a year and a half because the experiment didn’t work

I don’t think counsel would be happy with the Mets with all that media attention and second guessing in New York. Also; New York has a rebuilding at best type team while the Astros are a post season favorite. Houston be his best fit I think

Is Craig Councell all that great? I think the best managers know their teams and can manage their bullpen well.

I watched a few MIL games last year where Coucell called upon Josh Hader in games with good leads. Early on, it was obvious to everyone else that Hader was struggling and should’ve been pulled. Councell not only let Hader give up the lead, he let him lose the games.

Hader had 19 straight saves in 2022 and didn’t give up a run until June.

It wasn’t until July that Hader started struggling. He was traded at the end of that month.

So far, the Brewers traded Josh Hader foro Robert Gasser, the Brewers best AAA Starting Pitcher, and Esuery Ruiz who was turned for William Contreras and Joel Payamps.

What the Brewers got in a trade 4 months later for Ruiz has no bearing on the trade they made to send away Hader. So stop trying to make it out like the Padres gave them Contreras and Payamps. The Padres knew what Ruiz is, a below league average hitter with exceptional speed. That Forst is an idiot and traded too much for him is irrelevant.

The Brewers got Rogers for 2 months, Lamet who never played a game for them, Gasser, and Ruiz who had a .000 BA in 9 AB for them from the Padres. The Padres got Hader for 1 year and 2 months.

Gasser was not great this year. At age 24 he was decidedly meh. 3.79 ERA. He is outside the top 100 prospects and grades out as a 50 or ceiling of a league average pitcher. He only has one plus pitch, that slider. In the majors his command will have to be Maddux precise or his low 90s FB and upper 80s cutter are going to get pounded.

The Padres won that trade. .

De Nile is not just a river in Egypt. Only a Padres fan could perform the mental gymnastic and invalidation of related subsequent trades necessary to mind-blowing affirm the Padres won that trade lol.

It would be a great acquisition for the Astros, but it seems a bit of a stretch that he would go there. He is from Wisconsin and he has one son playing baseball at the University of Minnesota and another one at the University of Michigan. Sounds like he’s kind of a Midwest type of guy. Professionally this would be a great match, but personally Cleveland or Milwaukee would probably have the edge

Craig Counsell is the hot new manager these days. I’ve seen him plenty against the Cubs, I personally think he’s great. Counsell is trying to raise the salary on managers it seems, Ken Rosenthal pointed that out. The man is going to get paid that’s for sure.
