Mets To Exercise Club Option On Brooks Raley

By Darragh McDonald | November 3, 2023 at 12:20pm CDT

The Mets will be picking up their club option on left-hander Brooks Raley, retaining him for 2024 via a $6.5MM salary instead of taking the $1.25MM buyout, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

It’s not a surprising decision, as Raley has been an effective reliever for a few years now. The net $5.25MM price point is a perfectly reasonable amount to pay for a reliable left-handed reliever. He posted an earned run average of 2.80 across 66 appearances for the Mets this year. His 10.6% walk rate was on the high side but he struck out 25.8% of opponents and kept the ball on the ground at a 43% clip.

Raley spent 2015 to 2019 in Korea, pitching for the Lotte Giants of the KBO. He came back to North America and got a brief look with the Reds before getting flipped to the Astros. In 2021, He had an ERA of 4.78 for Houston but with encouraging underlying metrics. He struck out 31.7% of batters faced while walking 7.8%, but a 59.7% strand rate led to some extra runs crossing the plate. That’s why ERA estimators were far kinder, including a 3.27 FIP and a 2.91 SIERA.

Raley didn’t have six years of service after that season but reached free agency regardless, a common contractual stipulation given to players coming from playing overseas. That led to a two-year, $10MM deal with the Rays going into 2022. He then registered a 2.68 ERA for Tampa that year before getting flipped to the Mets prior to 2023.

As mentioned, Raley went on to have another solid season in 2023. He got some trade interest prior to the deadline, as the Mets were selling off pieces amid their disappointing season. He ultimately stayed and will now rejoin the Mets’ bullpen for 2024. As of now, he should be the top lefty in the relief corps, with Josh Walker the only other option on the 40-man. José Quintana, David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi are also left-handed and on the roster but they figure to be in the mix for rotation jobs, depending how the rest of the offseason plays out.

Olive Garden is still waiting to see if Daniel Vogelbach picks up his option. Their business most likely depends on it.

Typical garbage time lefty reliever with inflated stats. He is not worth 7 mil a year. You should see his stats when they put him in the closer role for a couple games, couldn’t even record an out vs the Royals. Misleading reliever, I’ve seen enough of him

In the 9th inning he had a 0.93 ERA.

He is a lefty specialist, not a closer. Given the big time LHH in the NL east(Schwarber, Harper, Olson, Arrez, etc)…this makes alot of sense. Had reverse splits last year, but typically has been a really good pitcher against lefties.

@Idosteriods pitching in the 9th inning and closing a game are two different things, you know that right? The score could be 15-0 and he pitches in the 9th, literally your arguement makes no sense

So what your saying his 1 blown save out of 4 defines his closing career? In total for his other 3 save opportunities its no hits and two walks with basically all outs as strike out or ground out with only one of them being a flyball. I wouldnt want him as a closer but either argument is waaaaayyyyy to small to judge by.

by that way of thinking your favorite reliever drew smiths would be a premier reliever as he had an outing with inning and a third of no hit no walk and left a runner stranded (a very clean outing). Lindor should be league mvp with an amazing outing of 5-5 with a homerun and 2 triples.

scherzer would be absolute garbage and not deserving of being in the league with a 3 inning outing against houston where he gave up 7 runs or
how about Mariano Rivera blowing that game against the red sox and letting them go on to win the that series and then the world series. Take him out the hall of fame.

I think he is ok reliever if he starts an inning or no inherited runners. This is where you argument should be as he has let roughly half his inherited runners score which keeps his ERA low even though he gave up runs.

Batters vs Raley in late and close games: .191/.299/.294 (.593 OPS)
Batters vs Raley in high leverage situations: .179/.300/.254 (.554 OPS)
Batters vs Raley in innings 7-9: .214/.314/.330 (.644 OPS)
Batters vs Raley in save situations in 2023: .223/.333/.330 (.663 OPS)
Batters vs Raley in save situations in 2022: .190/.260/.285 (.544 OPS)

If he’s so bad when the game is on the line, then why do batters not hit him in those situations?

Because LFGMets and Camden know more than anyone else on this site and they’re not MLB executives by choice.

@mlb1225 keep throwing out these stats, I got something better, my eyes. Raley doesn’t win games, hes good as a last reliever in garbage time

Then why does he perform so well when he is given the ball in late games and at high leverage?

On top of that, he led all Mets relievers in win percentage added this year. Sounds like your eyes have some bias and you only remember the few times he couldn’t come through.

I don’t think any player would meet your expectations. You do realize everyone has a bad game.

Like Raley a lot. Even closed some games with no Diaz and Robertson. Good option pick up.

Nate Lavender will get every shot in Spring Training to be the Mets other Lefty reliever next year. Pitched to a 2.98 ERA, 86 K’s in 54 inning, and a 1.20 WHIP
between AA and AAA. He’ll be 24 in January. If not sign Matt Moore as another Lefty.

@KennyF’nPowers InEppler never gave Lavender a chance to show what he has in the big leagues. They kept Grant Hartwig and Sean Ried-Foley, some of the worst relievers in the game, over calling him up

That’s a lot of “won” for a guy who was in the KBO not too long ago. Good for him.
