White Sox Sign Paul DeJong

By Darragh McDonald | November 28, 2023 at 10:05am CDT

The White Sox announced Tuesday that they’ve signed free agent shortstop Paul DeJong to a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $1.75MM. (Chicago is one of the few MLB organizations that publicly discloses financial terms.) DeJong, a client of the C.L. Rocks Corporation, can reportedly earn another $250K via incentives.

Signing the 30-year-old DeJong is a clear buy-low move for the Sox, as he has struggled badly in recent seasons. He had an incredible debut with the Cardinals in 2017, hitting 25 home runs in his first 108 major league games. His 28% strikeout rate and 4.7% walk rate were not great, but his overall line of .285/.325/.532 translated to a wRC+ of 123.

The Cards made a bet that DeJong could be their shortstop for many years to come, signing him to a six-year, $26MM extension prior to 2018. Unfortunately for them, DeJong’s production slid downhill from the moment that deal was signed. His wRC+ dropped to 103 in 2018, then 101, 87, 84 and 54 through 2022.

In 2023, he seemed to get back on track somewhat. Through 81 games for the Cards, he hit 13 home runs and slashed .233/.297/.412 for a wRC+ of 94. Though he was still below the league average hitter, that kind of production for a strong defensive shortstop was still welcome, and an obvious boost from his previous nosedive.

However, the Cards flipped him to the Blue Jays prior to the deadline, which was the start of another frustrating run for him. The Jays had recently lost Bo Bichette to the injured list and tried to use DeJong to fill the gap, but the move to Toronto didn’t go well, to put it mildly. DeJong hit .068/.068/.068 in his 44 plate appearances, striking out in 40.9% of them without drawing a walk. Once Bichette was reinstated from the injured list, the Jays designated him for assignment and eventually released him. The Giants took a shot on him but he continued to struggle, hitting .184/.180/.286 for that club, striking out at a 32% clip and not drawing a walk for them either. He was released again near the end of September.

The White Sox just moved on from a different shortstop who also endured an awful season in 2023. Tim Anderson had been an above-average hitter from 2019 to 2022 but hit just one home run this past year while batting .245/.286/.296 overall. His wRC+ of 60 was the worst such number from any qualified hitter for the year. The Sox could have retained Anderson via a $14MM buyout and hoped for a bounceback but decided to move on, declining that option.

A couple of weeks ago, general manager Chris Getz said the club would be looking for a veteran with good defense to take over for Anderson, ideally on a short-term deal to bridge the gap to prospect Colson Montgomery. DeJong certainly fits the bill there, having racked up 41 Defensive Runs Saved, four Outs Above Average and earned a grade of 30.5 from Ultimate Zone Rating in his career. He has shown some offensive potential in the past but the recent results have been grisly.

Perhaps the club will only keep DeJong around until the job is wrested away from him, as Montgomery is considered one of the top prospects in the league. He’s currently listed #14 overall at Baseball America, #12 at FanGraphs and #17 at MLB Pipeline, while midseason updates saw him get the #21 spot from Keith Law of The Athletic and #2 from ESPN. Montgomery hit .287/.455/.484 in the minors this year, posting matching strikeout and walk rates of 19%. He finished the year at Double-A and then went to the Arizona Fall League for a bit more action.

Montgomery is still young, turning 22 in February, and has yet to reach Triple-A. But it’s possible he’s not too far away and DeJong may just be a placeholder. The Sox don’t have an obvious solution at second base either, so perhaps DeJong could move across the bag if he is in decent form, but it’s also possible the club could move on if the guarantee isn’t especially burdensome.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported the White Sox and DeJong were nearing a major league deal. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first confirmed a deal was in place. Bob Nightengale of USA Today specified it was a one-year contract, and Heyman first reported the terms — which were subsequently publicly confirmed by the club.

So Nicky Lopez and Shewmake will not be starters on the south side after all.

I would think Nicky slides around as utility infielder. DeJong signing doesn’t necessarily force either out.

DeJong signing doesn’t guarantee that DeJong makes the team. The eventual starting SS will have to earn it in the spring.

MLB contract indicates he will make the team. Otherwise, you would sign a guy to a minors deal.

That’s true, but he will still have to win a starting job if he doesn’t want to just be a bench player who mostly only comes in for late inning defense or an occasional pinch-hitting opportunity against a lefty.

MLB contract means there was some competition and it was necessary to sign him. It doesn’t mean they will keep him no matter how bad he is. MLB contracts get cut all the time, and for a lot more money than this one. Ask Hosmer. Ask Donaldson. Ask Hicks.

All those examples came in the final year of multi-year contacts. You don’t sign a guy to an MLB contract to have him cut by the end of spring training.

They’re barely paying him minimum which is more than he deserves. Bottom line is that he is of no consequence to the Sox. I’m sure they’re hoping someone beats him out for a job.

Of course not. You never sign someone with the intent that it won’t work out. But $1.75mm isn’t enough to force the team to keep him if he he doesn’t show up in the spring.

Arozarena did get a chance and played well in his September cup of coffee for the Cardinals. The Cardinals just felt they were better off trading for Liberatore at the time (as well as dumping Jose Martinez before the DH came to the NL.)

They should’ve just stayed with Andrus. I mean, how bad does a player have to be to find his way to the Sox? DeJong’s stats, three teams dfa’ing him in one season, a .068 BA? How could TA have been the worst player in BB in 2023 with DeJong around? But this is typical of Reinsdorf’s philosophy. He has his own cap: No new player will make more than $3m/year. Wait for teams to throw out their garbage, then put a White Sox uniform on them. This is Reinsdorf’s continuance in disgracing this franchise and spitting in the faces of the fans. He is an insult to baseball.

Technically, he was only DFAed twice, as the Cardinals only traded him. He actually hit decently (for a glove-first SS) up to that point.

Carl, you obviously don’t get the point being made. They are talking about Tim Anderson, who basically stated he was the modern day Jackie Robinson due to all the racial issues he was going through.

Anderson is the one you should be directing your anger towards, or maybe not anger, but constructive mentoring, because he just doesn’t get it. It’s the reason Josh Donaldson was poking fun at him (and rightly so) though so many people called him a racist also when the reality was he was backing Jackie Robinson. Sadly, too many people just jump to conclusions without knowing the facts.

The post was spot on in both the context of DeJong being a better glove, while also ridiculing Anderson for his victim mentality. Even if you didn’t know the back story, your post was just as bad and should not be tolerated.

Dumpster, you seem to know the facts but still bash Donaldson for sticking up for who Jackie Robinson was. Sad man, Sad.

Avenger, that’s basically what I meant. Many clubs not contending pick up guys hoping they rebound so they can dump them for minor leaguers, just one of which could miraculously hit. Otherwise the team would just start a rookie for less $$.

I’m shocked he was able to get a guaranteed $1.75M based on his performance the last 3 seasons. I was thinking it would be much closer to the minimum (somewhere around $800K guaranteed) with incentives that could double that amount. Great job by DeJong and his agents for securing this amount of money when there’s a decent chance he doesn’t even make the team out of spring training.

-.13 WAR in 2023, was probably going to retire after 2021 but had a brief bounceback and got another year or two, his 2022 wasn’t great, barely serviceable really, so 2023 was gonna be it no matter what, most likely and Crawford already said it was his farewell tour, so yeah, I think it’s over. He’s gonna be turning in his retirement papers sooner rather than later.

This isn’t a knock on the man and if has the fire to grind one more season than I wish him the best but it just sounds like Crawford just doesn’t want to do the grind anymore

Strange Sutter seldom gets mentioned, maybe because it isn’t current.

Sutter got a 6 year, $9 mil contract. With 36 years deferred and alot of interest%. He was at the top of paid players then. (Gossage,Schmidt, etc)

I think the Braves finally quit paying in 2022, around $1mil yearly.

        During 6 year contract, Sutter pitched. 88IP, 18IP, 0IP, 45IP, 0 & 0.

How about Al Hrobosky. Found the below on a google search. Probably a nickname that would not be tolerated today, but this is a direct quote so I didn’t want to remove it.

“Al Hrabosky, the “Mad Hungarian” who became a free agent after pitching for the Kansas City Royals two seasons, yesterday signed a five-year pact with the Atlanta Braves that will provide money long after the 30-year-old reliever steps permanently from the mound.

Terms were not disclosed but Hrabosky said the agreement includes deferred payments. It has been estimated those payments will total $5.9 million over 35 years.”

WSox unfortunately cannot teach defense in general. 1 of many player development woes for past couple decades. Montgomery makes a ton of errors. They need to hire coaches in minors who are qualified to turn that around, especially SS and Catchers.

Yep. Ask the Pirates, Royals, and the Astros about that.. Yeah the Astros are good now, but how many rebuilds did that team go through? Same with KC, sure 1 WS, but again how many times where they ‘rebuilding’. Just cause the Cubs managed to pull it off, and the Astros finally happened to get it right does not guarantee anything.

Sorry, forgot the Tigers in there too. I also mean when these teams ‘rebuild on the fly’ as well (which the same teams that eventually tear it down also try to do this). Even by your view, the White Sox fans, suffering already, are likely going to suffer another 5 years at least. Hopefully the ‘Chairman’, and his inflated ego, goes away and the team is sold to someone who cares about winning and not just money. The sad thing is it will be someone who likely has to overpay this buffoon to get him out of his seat will then need to strip the team down to the screws to cover the cost, which will make the Sox mediocre for another x years until the bills are paid.. In any case, White Sox fans are just screwed.

Look. DeJong is a smart quality dude, Who handles the SS better than a average. He runs well, has little injury history. He has 30 homers a years power if he get enough plate appearances. He sure runs hot and cold. But he is a quality guy not exactly similar to a lot of Sox players.

DeJong still got 400 PAs and only hit 14 HRs this past season. That’s only on pace for 21 HRs over 600 PAs, not 30+. In 2022, it would’ve only be 15 HRs if projected to 600 PAs.

I’d wager my Social Security check that if George Brett picked up a bat and slathered it with pine tar he could put up better numbers than Yoan Moncada in 2024.

The easiest projection for me would be to give Jermaine Dye a ring to see if he would like an opportunity to earn another one as the White Sox starting right fielder in the coming decade.

DeJong hardly gets my heart racing, but he should be cheap, which makes him attractive to a team eager to cut payroll and be uncompetitive. Only thing interesting about him is if he can regain his swing or is this his final stop before Taiwan or Seoul?

He’s a good guy for a rebuilding team like the White Sox. He plays good defense, better than people think he does. He’s not flashy but he makes all the plays he can get to.

Negatives are he’s incredibly streaky and he only plays shortstop. He’s worth taking a chance on.

I mean the team will be bad, but they were going to be bad regardless.Adrus could still be back as well, but if I was Adrus, two years of this club would be far enough.. Im guessing Adrus wouldn’t mind trying to find some reserve role on a team trying to win something.

As a Cards fan who’s predisposed to liking Paulie D, the reality is once pitchers figured out they didn’t have to throw it in the strike zone for him to swing at it he was all done.

Again, I love the guy. But he can’t hit major league pitching anymore. He barely hit in AAA on rehab assignments and being sent down. He is a decent SS, and could probably be more than passable at every infield position.

The crazy thing is, he was a CATCHER in college. Not many guys go from college catcher to MLB Shortstop, including one year as an All-Star.

There are minor league systems that skip over certain levels because, maybe, their management believes the player could develop flaws by passing through.

I have noticed the Mariners tend to have their best skip AAA PCL (Gilbert, Miller, Woo, Rodriguez, and Kirby*). Those of the prospects that head to AAA in Seattle have a major flaw or are older prospects. The White Sox are also similar. I believe it has to do with the park factors boosting Charlotte’s hitting power. But it could be that the White Sox have been desperate to get talent up (Vaughn, Colas)

      Reply
      • Aaron Sapoznik

The White Sox have typically been desperate to get talent up quickly. A big part of that had been their affinity for drafting college talent during the Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn era. Andrew Vaughn fits that criteria.

The White Sox also have a tendency to sign older international talent which was the case with both Oscar Colas and Jose Abreu.

All that said, Vaughn not only wound up skipping AAA but AA as well. He was the White Sox 1st round (overall #3) selection of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of California. As an advanced college bat, Vaughn split the remainder of that season quickly progressing from Rk-A-A+ ball appearing in 55 games with 245 PA’s. Because of the cancelled 2020 season due to COVID, that was the extent of his minor league baptism before debuting with the White Sox on April 2, 2021 versus the Angels in Anaheim. Vaughn did spend time at the White Sox alternate summer camp with many of their other top prospects during the shortened 2020 COVID season.

Another hindrance to Vaughn’s development aside from lack of minor league reps was the White Sox decision to force him into positions other than his natural 1B at the MLB level. Abreu was the primary first baseman. The White Sos plan was to let Vaughn mostly DH and occasionally spell ‘Pito’ at 1B. That was before ‘LF’ Eloy Jimenez went down in spring training with a serious injury. That injury prompted the brass to audition Vaughn, along with fellow 1B Gavin Sheets, as a corner OF’s for the remainder of ST. Vaughn wound up starting 102 games at foreign positions including LF (86), RF (14), 3B (1) and 2B (1). He only started 14 games where he was best utilized, 1B (10) and DH (4). This madness continued throughout 2022 as well with zero improvement in his defensive acumen. Vaughn was finally able to settle into his role of primary 1B last season when the White Sox finally decided to let franchise face Abreu leave in free agency. The net result left the White Sox with diminished offense at the cold corner and major issues in their clubhouse.

As for Colas, he actually did accrue reps at all the White Sox minor league levels, albeit just 7 games and 33 PA’s at AAA, before making his MLB debut on March 30, 2023. Poor early performance with the White Sox resulted in a whole lot more playing time for Colas at AAA Charlotte last season.

This is just a 3 month 1.75 million contract to DeJong, unless he switches to 2nd base after Montgomery comes aboard. Or if Montgomery makes team out if Spring Training it’d be a wasted DeJong signing unless he moves to 2nd. This front office is as lost as I’d ever seen. Career BA of 0.229 & wOBA of .307 is more predictive of his future production. Don’t expect much from him but for $1.75M on a 1-year deal is not horrible. Maybe a a bit of an overpay but not a major cost.
