The White Sox announced Tuesday that they’ve signed free agent shortstop Paul DeJong to a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $1.75MM. (Chicago is one of the few MLB organizations that publicly discloses financial terms.) DeJong, a client of the C.L. Rocks Corporation, can reportedly earn another $250K via incentives.
Signing the 30-year-old DeJong is a clear buy-low move for the Sox, as he has struggled badly in recent seasons. He had an incredible debut with the Cardinals in 2017, hitting 25 home runs in his first 108 major league games. His 28% strikeout rate and 4.7% walk rate were not great, but his overall line of .285/.325/.532 translated to a wRC+ of 123.
The Cards made a bet that DeJong could be their shortstop for many years to come, signing him to a six-year, $26MM extension prior to 2018. Unfortunately for them, DeJong’s production slid downhill from the moment that deal was signed. His wRC+ dropped to 103 in 2018, then 101, 87, 84 and 54 through 2022.
In 2023, he seemed to get back on track somewhat. Through 81 games for the Cards, he hit 13 home runs and slashed .233/.297/.412 for a wRC+ of 94. Though he was still below the league average hitter, that kind of production for a strong defensive shortstop was still welcome, and an obvious boost from his previous nosedive.
However, the Cards flipped him to the Blue Jays prior to the deadline, which was the start of another frustrating run for him. The Jays had recently lost Bo Bichette to the injured list and tried to use DeJong to fill the gap, but the move to Toronto didn’t go well, to put it mildly. DeJong hit .068/.068/.068 in his 44 plate appearances, striking out in 40.9% of them without drawing a walk. Once Bichette was reinstated from the injured list, the Jays designated him for assignment and eventually released him. The Giants took a shot on him but he continued to struggle, hitting .184/.180/.286 for that club, striking out at a 32% clip and not drawing a walk for them either. He was released again near the end of September.
The White Sox just moved on from a different shortstop who also endured an awful season in 2023. Tim Anderson had been an above-average hitter from 2019 to 2022 but hit just one home run this past year while batting .245/.286/.296 overall. His wRC+ of 60 was the worst such number from any qualified hitter for the year. The Sox could have retained Anderson via a $14MM buyout and hoped for a bounceback but decided to move on, declining that option.
A couple of weeks ago, general manager Chris Getz said the club would be looking for a veteran with good defense to take over for Anderson, ideally on a short-term deal to bridge the gap to prospect Colson Montgomery. DeJong certainly fits the bill there, having racked up 41 Defensive Runs Saved, four Outs Above Average and earned a grade of 30.5 from Ultimate Zone Rating in his career. He has shown some offensive potential in the past but the recent results have been grisly.
Perhaps the club will only keep DeJong around until the job is wrested away from him, as Montgomery is considered one of the top prospects in the league. He’s currently listed #14 overall at Baseball America, #12 at FanGraphs and #17 at MLB Pipeline, while midseason updates saw him get the #21 spot from Keith Law of The Athletic and #2 from ESPN. Montgomery hit .287/.455/.484 in the minors this year, posting matching strikeout and walk rates of 19%. He finished the year at Double-A and then went to the Arizona Fall League for a bit more action.
Montgomery is still young, turning 22 in February, and has yet to reach Triple-A. But it’s possible he’s not too far away and DeJong may just be a placeholder. The Sox don’t have an obvious solution at second base either, so perhaps DeJong could move across the bag if he is in decent form, but it’s also possible the club could move on if the guarantee isn’t especially burdensome.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported the White Sox and DeJong were nearing a major league deal. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first confirmed a deal was in place. Bob Nightengale of USA Today specified it was a one-year contract, and Heyman first reported the terms — which were subsequently publicly confirmed by the club.
BaseballisLife
So Nicky Lopez and Shewmake will not be starters on the south side after all.
Bob Sacamano 310
Nicky Lopez will be until Montgomery comes up
n2thecards
I would think Nicky slides around as utility infielder. DeJong signing doesn’t necessarily force either out.
stymeedone
DeJong signing doesn’t guarantee that DeJong makes the team. The eventual starting SS will have to earn it in the spring.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s the White Sox and he’s a plus glove. He’s their starting SS.
Probably "Rick hahn"
The ISU Redbirds side of me is extatic!
The rest of me not so much
Chicken In Philly?
MLB contract indicates he will make the team. Otherwise, you would sign a guy to a minors deal.
David Barista
Hahn set a pretty good precedent for DFAs.
Lanidrac
That’s true, but he will still have to win a starting job if he doesn’t want to just be a bench player who mostly only comes in for late inning defense or an occasional pinch-hitting opportunity against a lefty.
stymeedone
MLB contract means there was some competition and it was necessary to sign him. It doesn’t mean they will keep him no matter how bad he is. MLB contracts get cut all the time, and for a lot more money than this one. Ask Hosmer. Ask Donaldson. Ask Hicks.
Chicken In Philly?
All those examples came in the final year of multi-year contacts. You don’t sign a guy to an MLB contract to have him cut by the end of spring training.
roob
They’re barely paying him minimum which is more than he deserves. Bottom line is that he is of no consequence to the Sox. I’m sure they’re hoping someone beats him out for a job.
stymeedone
Of course not. You never sign someone with the intent that it won’t work out. But $1.75mm isn’t enough to force the team to keep him if he he doesn’t show up in the spring.
Lanidrac
Arozarena did get a chance and played well in his September cup of coffee for the Cardinals. The Cardinals just felt they were better off trading for Liberatore at the time (as well as dumping Jose Martinez before the DH came to the NL.)
roob
Would rather have Lopez as my steering SS than DeJong.
avenger65
They should’ve just stayed with Andrus. I mean, how bad does a player have to be to find his way to the Sox? DeJong’s stats, three teams dfa’ing him in one season, a .068 BA? How could TA have been the worst player in BB in 2023 with DeJong around? But this is typical of Reinsdorf’s philosophy. He has his own cap: No new player will make more than $3m/year. Wait for teams to throw out their garbage, then put a White Sox uniform on them. This is Reinsdorf’s continuance in disgracing this franchise and spitting in the faces of the fans. He is an insult to baseball.
Lanidrac
Technically, he was only DFAed twice, as the Cardinals only traded him. He actually hit decently (for a glove-first SS) up to that point.
Bob Sacamano 310
Honestly, I would take his Cardinals numbers in the limited time he should play (place-holder for Colson Montgomery and then bench role).
Aiden Awe
On the flip side, he has an OAA of 9 and plays good defense.

Nobody’s talking about actual Jackie Robinson. If you consider Tim Anderson iconic you probably shouldn’t be watching Baseball

I’m sorry but when you compare your own self to an amazing human being who actually tore down barriers You should a 100% be mocked for it until the day that you die.
UGA_Steve
Carl, you obviously don’t get the point being made. They are talking about Tim Anderson, who basically stated he was the modern day Jackie Robinson due to all the racial issues he was going through.
Anderson is the one you should be directing your anger towards, or maybe not anger, but constructive mentoring, because he just doesn’t get it. It’s the reason Josh Donaldson was poking fun at him (and rightly so) though so many people called him a racist also when the reality was he was backing Jackie Robinson. Sadly, too many people just jump to conclusions without knowing the facts.
The post was spot on in both the context of DeJong being a better glove, while also ridiculing Anderson for his victim mentality. Even if you didn’t know the back story, your post was just as bad and should not be tolerated.
Dumpster, you seem to know the facts but still bash Donaldson for sticking up for who Jackie Robinson was. Sad man, Sad.

Kind of deal that the Sox hope goes surprisingly well and he’s dealt when an injury elsewhere happens. He could also be released by June 1st…
Pete'sView
DeJong looked completely lost with San Francisco.
scottn59c
He did. Only got into 18 games, though. Still, that was enough for SF to cut bait.
Whyme
As A Jay’s fan he looked like he didn’t want to be here lol. He must have carried that to San Fran.
Giant1962
SF fan here. I was at first game against Phillies. HR, think 4 rbis…next 17 games, nothing, maybe 5 hits. Terrible.
avenger65
Dewey: Never. He fits in perfectly with the Sox, who continue to be the biggest joke in bb. Reinsdorf cutting budget? From what? He isn’t paying anyone anything. Cease and Robert are probably praying for a trade to get them out of this mess.
deweybelongsinthehall
Avenger, that’s basically what I meant. Many clubs not contending pick up guys hoping they rebound so they can dump them for minor leaguers, just one of which could miraculously hit. Otherwise the team would just start a rookie for less $$.
Lanidrac
Placeholder vets are also useful to keep a team from promoting a prospect too early and possibly ruin his development.
Dorothy_Mantooth
I’m shocked he was able to get a guaranteed $1.75M based on his performance the last 3 seasons. I was thinking it would be much closer to the minimum (somewhere around $800K guaranteed) with incentives that could double that amount. Great job by DeJong and his agents for securing this amount of money when there’s a decent chance he doesn’t even make the team out of spring training.
JoeBrady
I was surprised as well. It’s been a while since he was even replacement level.
Lanidrac
You mean the first four months of this most recent season? Don’t forget that he was having a decent rebound year until he was traded.

I wonder if Anderson signs for more than DeJong or if they are both vet minimum deals.
GM Wannabe 2
It looks like JR is striving to make the Sox worse than Oakland & KC They let Aubreu walk & despite an extremely slow start he still drove in 90 runs (that’s more than Robert or Vaughn). He also hit well in the playoffs. Then they trade Burger. I guess they didn’t need those 33 HRs
JoeBrady
Abreu is a $58.5M/3 player with a 0.00 bWAR last year. I’m pretty sure the Astros will be glad to let you have that contract.
Gumby82
They picked the wrong ex-Giants SS. Should have gone with Brandon Crawford for a year, or just stuck with Anderson
Blue Baron
Didn’t Crawford retire?
Gumby82
Not yet. He’s looking for an opportunity like the one the White Sox had

Gumby: I’m sure Crawford has more pride than to play for the Sox. Actually, I doubt the Sox will lure anyone of quality to Chicago.

TrillionaireTeamOperator
I don’t think Crawford would play again, let alone on another team, unless it was a truly insane offer of like 1 year/$30M or 2 years/$50M or something like that and even then he might hesitate and wonder if he really needed the extra money.
Gumby82
It’ll take 3 million to keep him playing
scottn59c
As beloved as Crawford is, he looked pretty cooked last season. I think he’ll be wrapping up an admirable career.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
-.13 WAR in 2023, was probably going to retire after 2021 but had a brief bounceback and got another year or two, his 2022 wasn’t great, barely serviceable really, so 2023 was gonna be it no matter what, most likely and Crawford already said it was his farewell tour, so yeah, I think it’s over. He’s gonna be turning in his retirement papers sooner rather than later.
Gumby82
I hope so. He’s earned his respect and retirement
brodie-bruce
I think I read somewhere if sf didn’t want to bring him back this year he was going to retire, either way unless Crawford still has that fire to want to play, tbh doesn’t sound like he has (maybe to play but not the grind) he should retire and enjoy the next chapter in his life. This isn’t a knock on the man and if has the fire to grind one more season than I wish him the best but it just sounds like Crawford just doesn’t want to do the grind anymore
Blue Baron
@brodie-bruce: Unless Crawford still has that fire to want to play AND A TEAM WILLING TO OFFER HIM A CONTRACT.
The second part is vital, actually more important than how the player feels or thinks.
solaris602
If they would have signed Crawford they still would have needed DeJong because someone needs to play SS when Crawford is on the IL half the year.

Strange Sutter seldom gets mentioned, maybe because it isn’t current.
Sutter got a 6 year, $9 mil contract. With 36 years deferred and alot of interest%. He was at the top of paid players then. (Gossage,Schmidt, etc)
I think the Braves finally quit paying in 2022, around $1mil yearly.
During 6 year contract, Sutter pitched. 88IP, 18IP, 0IP, 45IP, 0 & 0.

How about Al Hrobosky. Found the below on a google search. Probably a nickname that would not be tolerated today, but this is a direct quote so I didn’t want to remove it.
“Al Hrabosky, the “Mad Hungarian” who became a free agent after pitching for the Kansas City Royals two seasons, yesterday signed a five-year pact with the Atlanta Braves that will provide money long after the 30-year-old reliever steps permanently from the mound.
Terms were not disclosed but Hrabosky said the agreement includes deferred payments. It has been estimated those payments will total $5.9 million over 35 years.”

Stopgap option at short to buy time for Colson Montgomery if he’s not ready to be the everyday SS on Opening Day.
cwsOverhaul
WSox unfortunately cannot teach defense in general. 1 of many player development woes for past couple decades. Montgomery makes a ton of errors. They need to hire coaches in minors who are qualified to turn that around, especially SS and Catchers.

I don’t follow the White Sox prospects closely but isn’t a Montgomery and poor defender with very little pop? I don’t get all the excitement.

I don’t get it either. He has 39 errors in 1441 innings at SS. He had 36 Ks in 131 AA ABs (165 per 600 ABs) and a 27/6 K/W in the AFL (198/44) per 600 ABs).

Proof just because a team goes full rebuild and tank. Doesn’t mean that it will work
nrd1138
Yep. Ask the Pirates, Royals, and the Astros about that.. Yeah the Astros are good now, but how many rebuilds did that team go through? Same with KC, sure 1 WS, but again how many times where they ‘rebuilding’. Just cause the Cubs managed to pull it off, and the Astros finally happened to get it right does not guarantee anything.
Lanidrac
I’ll give you the others, but the Astros were only bad for 6 years in a row. That’s not an excessively long time for a rebuild.
nrd1138
Sorry, forgot the Tigers in there too. I also mean when these teams ‘rebuild on the fly’ as well (which the same teams that eventually tear it down also try to do this). Even by your view, the White Sox fans, suffering already, are likely going to suffer another 5 years at least. Hopefully the ‘Chairman’, and his inflated ego, goes away and the team is sold to someone who cares about winning and not just money. The sad thing is it will be someone who likely has to overpay this buffoon to get him out of his seat will then need to strip the team down to the screws to cover the cost, which will make the Sox mediocre for another x years until the bills are paid.. In any case, White Sox fans are just screwed.
spudchukar
Look. DeJong is a smart quality dude, Who handles the SS better than a average. He runs well, has little injury history. He has 30 homers a years power if he get enough plate appearances. He sure runs hot and cold. But he is a quality guy not exactly similar to a lot of Sox players.
Lanidrac
DeJong still got 400 PAs and only hit 14 HRs this past season. That’s only on pace for 21 HRs over 600 PAs, not 30+. In 2022, it would’ve only be 15 HRs if projected to 600 PAs.

I’d wager my Social Security check that if George Brett picked up a bat and slathered it with pine tar he could put up better numbers than Yoan Moncada in 2024.
The easiest projection for me would be to give Jermaine Dye a ring to see if he would like an opportunity to earn another one as the White Sox starting right fielder in the coming decade.
Aaron Sapoznik
Oops! No chance the White Sox call on Paul Splittorff. He’d only be an option for the Angels now…

No way is Monty ready to assume the job as F/T SS before ’25. Let the kid play at least a full season at AAA. No reason to rush him into the majors with the club on track for 100+ losses in ’24.
DeJong hardly gets my heart racing, but he should be cheap, which makes him attractive to a team eager to cut payroll and be uncompetitive. Only thing interesting about him is if he can regain his swing or is this his final stop before Taiwan or Seoul?

He’s been on average a 3 win player for his career. He was a positive WAR player before going to Toronto.
He’s a good guy for a rebuilding team like the White Sox. He plays good defense, better than people think he does. He’s not flashy but he makes all the plays he can get to.
Negatives are he’s incredibly streaky and he only plays shortstop. He’s worth taking a chance on.

I mean the team will be bad, but they were going to be bad regardless.Adrus could still be back as well, but if I was Adrus, two years of this club would be far enough.. Im guessing Adrus wouldn’t mind trying to find some reserve role on a team trying to win something.

As a Cards fan who’s predisposed to liking Paulie D, the reality is once pitchers figured out they didn’t have to throw it in the strike zone for him to swing at it he was all done.
Again, I love the guy. But he can’t hit major league pitching anymore. He barely hit in AAA on rehab assignments and being sent down. He is a decent SS, and could probably be more than passable at every infield position.
The crazy thing is, he was a CATCHER in college. Not many guys go from college catcher to MLB Shortstop, including one year as an All-Star.
PutPeteinthehall
This is the end for me. Going to be a long time before they see me at 35th and Shields again.

DeJong will bust out in April hitting 3-4 HRs then go quickly into slump mode and be cut by mid may…..that is likely scenario… That is if he makes team,
Sox need to look for Plan B (Jose Rodriguez) as they have Colson Montgomery coming up — I know AA players have jumped before but likely they will wait til June…
ClevelandSteelEngines
There are minor league systems that skip over certain levels because, maybe, their management believes the player could develop flaws by passing through.
I have noticed the Mariners tend to have their best skip AAA PCL (Gilbert, Miller, Woo, Rodriguez, and Kirby*). Those of the prospects that head to AAA in Seattle have a major flaw or are older prospects. The White Sox are also similar. I believe it has to do with the park factors boosting Charlotte’s hitting power. But it could be that the White Sox have been desperate to get talent up (Vaughn, Colas)
Aaron Sapoznik
The White Sox have typically been desperate to get talent up quickly. A big part of that had been their affinity for drafting college talent during the Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn era. Andrew Vaughn fits that criteria.
The White Sox also have a tendency to sign older international talent which was the case with both Oscar Colas and Jose Abreu.
All that said, Vaughn not only wound up skipping AAA but AA as well. He was the White Sox 1st round (overall #3) selection of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of California. As an advanced college bat, Vaughn split the remainder of that season quickly progressing from Rk-A-A+ ball appearing in 55 games with 245 PA’s. Because of the cancelled 2020 season due to COVID, that was the extent of his minor league baptism before debuting with the White Sox on April 2, 2021 versus the Angels in Anaheim. Vaughn did spend time at the White Sox alternate summer camp with many of their other top prospects during the shortened 2020 COVID season.
Another hindrance to Vaughn’s development aside from lack of minor league reps was the White Sox decision to force him into positions other than his natural 1B at the MLB level. Abreu was the primary first baseman. The White Sos plan was to let Vaughn mostly DH and occasionally spell ‘Pito’ at 1B. That was before ‘LF’ Eloy Jimenez went down in spring training with a serious injury. That injury prompted the brass to audition Vaughn, along with fellow 1B Gavin Sheets, as a corner OF’s for the remainder of ST. Vaughn wound up starting 102 games at foreign positions including LF (86), RF (14), 3B (1) and 2B (1). He only started 14 games where he was best utilized, 1B (10) and DH (4). This madness continued throughout 2022 as well with zero improvement in his defensive acumen. Vaughn was finally able to settle into his role of primary 1B last season when the White Sox finally decided to let franchise face Abreu leave in free agency. The net result left the White Sox with diminished offense at the cold corner and major issues in their clubhouse.
As for Colas, he actually did accrue reps at all the White Sox minor league levels, albeit just 7 games and 33 PA’s at AAA, before making his MLB debut on March 30, 2023. Poor early performance with the White Sox resulted in a whole lot more playing time for Colas at AAA Charlotte last season.
DeepDownSouth
Vaughn well come into his own in 2024 making many fans eat crow. WS fans are not smart as the managers and owners they blast daily. Couch mangers think they could do the things front office & managers do when the purse strings are pull tight.

I am greatly relieved that he has signed with the White Sox. I feared that Mozaliak might bring him back to St Louis as insurance in case Winn doesn’t hit. White Sox making White Sox moves. I still don’t understand why they don’t just bring back Leury. He has the fifth highest salary on the team as it stands. Could have saved the money, already have someone of equal value.

Too much.

So let us look at what Getz has cooked up so far this Thanksgiving Eve……
a) One SS who fields very well but cannot hit
b) One 2B/Util INF who fields very well but cannot hit
c) One C who throws and fields very well but cannot hit
d) One P with 1 year before escaping who could be a steal…..for 1 year
e) One P who strikes out as many as he walks but is left-handed
Happy Turkey Day!!

One way for Jerry to boost value and profits is reduce payroll, long term contractual debt and keep fans away. That way he pays no rent for the stadium and gets his revenue share.

With Paul the Young on board, who’s next for the White Sox? Howard Jones? Hall and Oates? Thomas Dolby? Falco?

The Edge sporting his #7 jersey would be “fire” on Chicago’s south side. If JR can’t afford Ohtani or Yamamoto, he’s definitely not “snatching” my mate. The Cubs have a shot. He may even let Ohtani borrow his shirt after they sign the unicorn. redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/The-Edge-7-Slane-Castle-by…

How do you tell your fan base your non going to be competitive without saying we are not going to be competitive. You Sign Paul DeJong to an MLB deal in November.

That quarter of a mil in incentives put it over the top.

Now if they really want to mail it in, they sign Longoria.
acoss13
Pretty sure Evan Longoria would rather retire than end his career with the 2024 White Sox…

Wonder what it would take for the reds to get cease

Much more than India that’s for sure.

Weird to see a major league contract for a free agent for such a reasonable and cheap $1.75M.
Digdugler
He should probably be paying the White Sox if we are going by $ per WAR.
YourDreamGM
Can’t go wrong at that price. Only upside.
DeepDownSouth
White Sox will definitely feel the wrath of letting TA go, when he regains his offensive and hitting prowess. This is just a 3 month 1.75 million contract to DeJong, unless he switches to 2nd base after Montgomery comes aboard. Or if Montgomery makes team out if Spring Training it’d be a wasted DeJong signing unless he moves to 2nd. This front office is as lost as I’d ever seen. DeLong would have to hit 20 bombs to make contract worthy
muskellunged
His glove alone is worth 1.75 million, even if his bats lost it’s pop. Stop gap ’til the Southside gets the full Monty.
Aiden Awe
Getz wanted a veteran placeholder. Sure his bat is dead. But he does improve the defense and the Lopez addition as well.
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Well now 65 wins is definitely in reach.
Jagsmanohman
Sounds like they could use Vaughn Grissom
Old York
Career BA of 0.229 & wOBA of .307 is more predictive of his future production. Don’t expect much from him but for $1.75M on a 1-year deal is not horrible. Maybe a a bit of an overpay but not a major cost.

he is a cubbie killer so hopefully that chicago atmosphere will transfer over to the southside, sincerely your cardinal fan
