Angels, Jose Marte Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | December 4, 2023 at 7:20pm CDT

The Angels have brought back reliever José Marte on a minor league contract, reports Robert Murray of FanSided (on X). Los Angeles had non-tendered the right-hander a couple weeks ago.

Marte has pitched at the highest level for the Halos in each of the past three seasons. He has logged 24 1/3 innings across 25 major league appearances. Marte has allowed 8.14 earned runs per nine over the stretch, walking an untenable 22.6% of opposing hitters.

A stress reaction in his throwing elbow cost Marte the bulk of this past season. He was limited to 10 big league outings and 11 appearances in the minors. In his most recent extended Triple-A action back in 2022, he worked to a 5.35 ERA while striking out just under 30% of batters faced — albeit with a still alarming 14.5% walk percentage.

Hang in a while longer … once Ohtani signs (or re-signs) things will pick up quick!

It’ll be Ohtani’s fault if he decides to re-sign with the Angels as to why he never won a ring.

Ohtani knew where he’d be going next year before this season was over. He just hasn’t announced it yet. When he does we’ll be seeing insiders falling over themselves trying to be the first to tell everyone who will listen that they knew it all along, someone in the organization told them in secret, that the story breaking the big news is already in their computer. I can’t wait for the arm-pinching and eye- gouging to start.

Marte has a very fast, heavy fastball and a good slider to boot. Hopefully he gets healthy and figures it out.

Hey, he only has an 8.50 ERA. Can we have one player or sign a player that is not a question mark? IF Taylor Ward is okay… If trout can stay on the field… if Adell can figure it out… if Rendon can stay healthy… if Schanuel can hit for power… if Detmars can figure it out… if Sandoval can pitch with control… if, if, if….

I don’t care if Schanuel can’t hit for power. If he continues to get on base at the clip he does, he’s the perfect lead off hitter. Not everyone in the lineup needs to hit homeruns.

Thanks for that Kellin. I would rather hae a team of guys who hit base hits than guys who hit homeruns and strike out. Get them on and get them in. Old school.

Not to mention he pretty much came in straight from college. Neto, schanuel, o hoppe is a good start. We need to fix the bullpen, so far it’s a blank slate besides estevez. I would say two good setup guys in free agency would work with Bachman, Joyce, Daniel, and quijada.

@rex I don’t know how Quijada is still on the team, he doesn’t inspire confidence.

He started out good, fell apart went on the dl. Honestly not sure if anyone inspired confidence.

We should be the preferred landing spot for relievers on minor league deals.
