The Blue Jays have fielded some trade interest in infielder Davis Schneider, writes TSN’s Scott Mitchell. There’s nothing to suggest a trade is either close or probable, as Mitchell categorizes talks as casual.
That Schneider is on the trade radar at all — even as a long shot candidate to move — speaks to the rise he has had over the past few months. A 28th round pick in 2017, Schneider has never featured prominently on rankings of the Toronto farm system. He consistently performed in the minors, hitting his way to Triple-A by the end of the 2022 season.
Schneider, who turns 25 in January, returned to Triple-A Buffalo to open this year. The right-handed hitting infielder had a stellar season for the Bisons, connecting on 21 homers in 392 plate appearances. The Jays selected his contract at the beginning of August. Schneider showed no signs of slowing down, tearing apart major league pitching over his first 35 games. He hit .276/.404/.603 with eight longballs in 143 trips to the plate.
That breakout showing makes Schneider a difficult player to value. The Jays (or any other team) certainly won’t expect him to continue hitting at an MVP-level pace. MLB pitchers are going to adjust to Schneider over the course of a full season. His excellent bottom line results belied some swing-and-miss issues in his first big league look. Schneider made contact on 64.9% of his swings, well below the 76.4% league average.
At the same time, Schneider could be an above-average hitter even if he takes a significant step back from his late-season level. He’s a career .253/.373/.463 hitter in parts of six minor league campaigns. Schneider has shown a very patient plate approach throughout his pro career, which he carried into his MLB time. (His contact problems were tied to whiffs within the zone as opposed to a propensity to chase off the plate.)
Things are perhaps murkier on the other side of the ball. Schneider has primarily played second and third base in the minors; he spent more time at the former position in his brief MLB look. Toronto has question marks at both positions thanks to the free agencies of Whit Merrifield and Matt Chapman. Schneider is seen as more of a bat-first player, however. Toronto still has Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal as multi-positional infielders and figures to add an infielder via free agency or trade. They’ve shown interest in Chapman and Jeimer Candelario, for example.
The Jays have no urgency to trade Schneider from a financial or roster perspective. He has all three minor league options remaining and won’t reach arbitration for three years. It’s likely that any trade talks are mostly a matter of due diligence to gauge whether there’s an opportunity for a sell-high move which the front office couldn’t refuse.

Unless Toronto got an unbelievably awesome return, I think Jays fans would be devastated if they traded him.

Schneider is expected to be traded for Gabe Arias and Eli Morgan of Cleveland by tomorrow evening . The Guardians like his metrics.

just DFA Espinal and problem solved.
bigdaddyt
Think Espi has more value then that, not saying it’s a lot but more than being DFA’d. Problem is that they have no one who can back up Bo at short unless they find that bench bat in FA or minors but Martinez probably isn’t ready at least defensively to play big league short
Diggydugler
Ernie can play short.
bigdaddyt
Would like someone better than a 28 year old who’s got like 340 at bats over the last 3 years
Diggydugler
Well he is better than Espinal, just a wasted roster spot if we are only keeping Espinal for “Bo injury insurance” at SS.
Michael90
Ernie Clement, Otto Lopez, Addison barger, Leo Jimenez all play shortstop on the 40 man.
terrymesmer
Not all of them are very good shortstops. See Sunday post, “In-depth defensive evaluations on Orelvis Martinez, Addison Barger, more” by Jays Journal.

Jays have no backup SS. Espinal stays put.

I want him as the back up IF, sign a 2b and let a rookie handle 3b. Get a big tim OF bat and a legit DH. If the rookie cant handle 3b the Schneider or the 2b signing/trade slides over, either wat Schneider would still get plenty of ABs
Chicken In Philly?
Where does the big-time OF bat come from? Just curious what your thoughts are.

I found Tommy Pham’s burner.

Teoscar is that you?

Well if soto and Ohtani arnt going going to be jays, which i believe both wont then its either sign Teo or make some trades IMO. Ive been saying that Eloy Jeminez or Nick Castellanos would make great DHs that play 40 games or so in the grass and could be had at good prices, Castellanos especially cheap if they pay 10M or so per year of his deal. I think they could get Soto but i think trading 2 of the top 5 prospects and Manoah is worth it. Oneil maybe would fit depending on price. From the sounds of Atkins today he has a trade lined up after Ohtani falls. Getting Kelenic would have been worth while, also signing kyle lewis as the 4th would be a nice move aswell, i dont know if he does that tho. Honestly ST.Louis and the jays lining up on a trade for Manoah+ for an outfield would be nice but Minnesota’s Ed Julien for LF/2B would be amazing
MoneyBallJustWorks
I agree taking a flyer on Lewis might be cool but not sure with the turf how much OF he can do.
and think Jays would prefer Soler over Eloy. likely a shorter deal for Soler for similar if not better production and like a similar amount of OF games (less than 25)
Fenway 1
Red Sox should trade for him just so he can’t torch us next year. Legitimately scarier than vladdy last year
bigdaddyt
Of course everyone wants the Everyman Davis Schneider. The guys a beast and wasn’t given the playing time he should have due to having 3 others who play the same positions he does but with longer track record. I would assume if he’s traded it’s because they want to keep a hold of Santiago and Cavin due to them not having as much value. Personally I would be fine if the jays traded Santi and Biggio for a lottery ticket or 2 and kept Schneider. Let some of these kids who have been in aaa for a few years get some time on the bench instead of a couple low .200 hitters who can play sub par to standard defence. Would like to see Horowitz and Barger get a chance in spring training and give Schneider a chance of being either the everyday 3rd or 2nd basemen.
Ted
Look I liked the story too, but after his historic 27/67 start he was 5/50 with 21 K and 4 BB. It was fun, but I’m not holding out any hope he’ll repeat even his final average line.
Shishka
That’s what I’m thinking too. I’m pretty okay with the Jays selling high on him if they can..
Chicken In Philly?
I think the Blue Jays are waiving him in front of other teams; I don’t think teams are really reaching out to them about him.
Murphy NFLD
Honestly i really like Biggio as the IF/OF utility type plus hes LHH and has power. At gis bes it really gets on base and i truly feel that they asked his to be more aggressive and thats what messed him up plus going to 3b, while nothing major, im sure didn’t help at the same time
Ted
Last three years Biggio has 22 HR and a 327 OBP in 935 PA. That’s not really a lot of power or on base chops.
Hired Gun 23
DAVIS SCHNEIDER…your accident attorneys.
Shishka
That’s not the correct Schneider for the Jays to get rid of.
MoneyBallJustWorks
maybe they can do a Schneider’s deal. take Davis, John and we will throw in a pack of Schneider’s hot dogs
Akakak
Jays have easily 6 – 8 platoon options for 2nd and 3rd.
They should just sign a veteran plugger like candalerio for around 10 -12 and mix and match the majority of the at bats.
Save all your bullets for ohtani or bellinger
GarryHarris
Vladdy needs to loose weight. He’s a cow.
MoneyBallJustWorks
You need to learn English.
Alex Snow
As opposed to needing to tighten weight?
TheBoatmen
Dangle Manoah and Schneider for Soto. Let Martinez play 3rd, Biggio at 2nd, sign Othani. Suddenly you have some power in the lineup.
MoneyBallJustWorks
another insane Jays fan thinking both Ohtani and Soto will be Jays
TheBoatmen
What if I told you insane was working fifty hours a week in some office for fifty years… at the end of which they tell you to pizz off? Ending up in some retirement village… hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time.
jimmertee
Boatmen, glad that you are not bitter.
BoJuBi
Final 2 months of the season he was one of our top hitters and was batting 4th in the lineup along with great defense at 2nd, 1st and rf. Not sure what you were watching
nosake
We’re all watching Biggio. Autumnal comeback is a common disease.
MoneyBallJustWorks
clearly he watched the playoffs when the team couldn’t score
gvnbuist
that someone batted 4th in that lineup isn’t a flex
BoJuBi
Not a flex? Batting 4th in a playoff team lineup for a guy your claiming isn’t mlb caliber player? Look at his numbers on both sides of the ball. Better yet watch the game!! They don’t make the playoffs without him
its_happening
Wasn’t tough being a top hitter on that squad.
terrymesmer
>Cavan Biggio…hasn’t been a MLB calibur player ever
Tsk, tsk. Such lies. Biggio has been a very good player with some bad injury-plagued seasons.
2019-20: 159 games, 107 runs, 20 SB, 5.0 WAR (that’s all-star level production)
2021: Cervical spine ligament sprain and back issues sent him to the IL twice
2022: Another early injury sapped his power
2023: After a very bad April, a swing adjustment resulted in very good .258/.367/.393/.760 slash line from May 1 until the end of the season. His 117 wRC+ after May 1 was better than Springer and Vladdy.
its_happening
The season usually starts March 31 or April 1. Those games do count on the schedule.
BoJuBi
Clearly you don’t actual watch baseball. Love how you look at the stats that fit your narrative and ignore the others. War mean nothing, ops means nothing, but you quote batting average lol
MoneyBallJustWorks
he’s trying to support your argument for Biggio and your dumping on him lol.
jdgoat
He was fine last year
Dustyslambchops23
Tough player to evaluate which leads me to believe he’ll remain with the org.
Sure the rise to prominence was a long shot, but that happens sometimes, he has something about him.
After about a week of success in an interview he talked about how he has struggles with high and tight fastballs (this was the book on him). In the next series he hit 2 up and in fastballs out. It was really impressive, that he was actively focusing on his weaknesses and how they were going to pitch him.
I think the contract rates limit him a bit but I have no issue believing he could be a 3 WAR player moving forward, nothing wrong with that, especially from where he started
tonyinsingapore
Never an impressive prospect and was on the verge of being out of the game altogether.
And then (loud snap of the fingers), just like that he’s hitting like Barry Bonds….
metslvt17
The bluejays have a roster that needs to win now. If they have an offer on the table that helps make this team better right now…you need to consider it.
Catuli Carl
lol wrong picture. That’s Dr. Disrespect AKA The Two Time.
its_happening
Face lefties, wait for Biggio to be exposed and take over starting at 2B. Biggio becomes the utility player.
I understand the Biggio supporters. He has built enough doubt over the years not to be trusted as a full time starter. He improved his defense in 2023 and showed flashes. We also must keep in-mind how bad the Jays offense was in 2023 where Cavan didn’t appear to “look that bad”. Cavan starts, Davis is the 10th man and starts if/when Biggio struggles.
jimmertee
Davis Schneider folded like a cheap suitcase at the end of last season, what 5/50? The opponents figured him out and he couldn’t adjust. Time will tell if he can.
He hunts fastballs and the opponents know it.
Obviously he has major league power, but he needs to be able to swing at strikes and not chase like he did at the end of the season. His defensive range is questionable. He has some trade value but not a tonne.
