Giants Met With Yoshinobu Yamamoto

By Steve Adams | December 11, 2023 at 3:38pm CDT

The Giants met with star NPB right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Sunday, reports Buster Olney of ESPN. They’re at least the third big-market club to meet with Yamamoto in just over a week’s time; the Yankees are reportedly meeting with the 25-year-old today, and Mets owner Steve Cohen flew to Japan recently to meet with the reigning three-time NPB MVP and Sawamura Award winner (the latter of which is NPB’s Cy Young equivalent).

Interest in Yamamoto on the Giants’ behalf has been expected all winter. It’s not clear exactly which members of the team brass met with Yamamoto, though it’s fair to presume that president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and ownership representatives were present. Half the league (if not more) showed some level of interest when the soon-to-be former Orix Buffaloes ace was posted for MLB clubs. The Giants are one of seven clubs characterized by Will Sammon of The Athletic as a “serious” suitor for Yamamoto, joining the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets and Blue Jays in that regard (plus another two unnamed teams).

The Dodgers, of course, have since signed Shohei Ohtani to a precedent-shattering $700MM contract. Whether they’d make another commitment that most expect to comfortably exceed $200MM remains to be seen. The Giants and Blue Jays, in particular, are two teams that were deeply involved in the bidding for Ohtani and can now pivot to Yamamoto. The two New York clubs have thus far been the most oft-linked clubs to Yamamoto, though that’s certainly not a clear signal that he’ll end up pitching for either.

Signing Yamamoto would require a significant shift in ideology for a Giants front office that in five years under Farhan Zaidi has not signed a free agent pitcher to a contract of more than three years in length. San Francisco did ink current ace Logan Webb to a five-year contract, but that bought out all of Webb’s would-be arbitration seasons as well. Signing Yamamoto would be another proposition entirely: commanding as many as seven, eight, nine or perhaps even ten years to the ballyhooed righty at market-rate prices.

The Giants have been far more wary of paying pitchers who are already into their 30s — hence the ill-fated decision to let Kevin Gausman sign with the Blue Jays on what now looks like a bargain five-year contract. Yamamoto’s youth makes him an atypical case that San Francisco decision-makers could consider an exception, though they’ll be far from alone in that line of thinking.

Payroll-wise, the Giants are positioned as well — if not better — than any of Yamamoto’s known top suitors. Webb, Mitch Haniger and Taylor Rogers are the only players guaranteed any money beyond the 2024 season, and the latter two are both off the books after the 2025 campaign. (Haniger technically could be sooner; he can opt out of the final year and $15.5MM on his contract next offseason, though he’d need a bounceback campaign to consider doing so.)

The Giants are known to be seeking star-caliber players after missing out on previous targets like Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa and now Ohtani. Zaidi was recently extended through the 2026 season, giving him some additional job security, but he’s also surely aware that in five seasons under his watch, the Giants have missed the postseason and finished .500 or worse on four occasions. The team’s farm system also hasn’t produced any star players during this stretch, although catcher Patrick Bailey and lefty Kyle Harrison certainly showed promise in 2023’s rookie efforts.

San Francisco’s rotation is also in dire need of both innings and upside. The Giants regularly leaned on openers and bullpen games in the season’s final months. Webb and veteran Alex Cobb are the only set-in-stone rotation members, but Cobb is also coming off hip surgery. The aforementioned Harrison will surely get a look but isn’t yet entrenched on the staff after serving up an average of 2.08 homers per nine frames in his rookie campaign. Swingman Ross Stripling could start or work out of the bullpen. Anthony DeSclafani — Zaidi’s largest free-agent pitching deal, at three years and $36MM — is still under contract for the 2024 season but pitched just 99 2/3 innings in 2023 due to injury. Twenty-five-year-old righty Keaton Winn posted a 6.04 ERA in his first five MLB starts this past season.

Yamamoto would be a sensible target for the Giants, although in a free-agent market that’s fairly deep in arms, San Francisco has alternative options if the team feels the bidding gets out of hand. That’s less true in a thin market for position players, where the Giants also figure to be active. Zaidi has spoken about adding to his outfield in particular, with Cody Bellinger standing as an oft-speculated fit for the Giants.

Whoever ultimately signs Yamamoto will owe his former club a posting/release fee equivalent to the sum of 20% of the contract’s first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM and 15% of any dollars thereafter. A $225MM investment in Yamamoto, for instance, would cost the signing club an additional $35.625MM. Future money paid out via incentives or contractual options is also subject to that 15% rate. Yamamoto has won three straight Sawamura Awards in Japan and just posted a career-best 1.21 ERA in 2023. He’s logged a sub-2.00 ERA in four of his past five seasons while punching out better than 27% of his opponents against a tidy 5.7% walk rate.

Who hasn’t met with Yamamoto? Let’s stop pretending he’s going to San Francisco lst. It’s going to Yankees or Mets. Let the games begin. Unless the Giants want to give him 1 billion to sign with them? Smh

Hitters don’t want to play there, but pitchers wouldn’t hesitate as much, I don’t think.

Well, I guess who wants to step in human poop or needles on the streets? It would be quite the culture shock for Yamamoto.

Human feces on SF streets is the most overblown myth/lie ever told about the city. There is one little pocket downtown that is awful but 97% of the city is beautiful and clean. LA’s skid row is far larger and nastier than anything in SF.

Seems like according to the numbers, it’s not so much that it’s “a pitcher’s ballpark” but more that it’s a middle of the pack as far as hitting. Remember, Bruce Bochy’s first season without Bam Bam Mullens as hit hitting coach had his Rangers hitting like crazy. Granted, they don’t play in SF, but I believe it’s more than just “park wind bad.” The park was built for Barry Bonds, and he hit well there. So have a lot of other guys. Unfortunately, the Giants haven’t had many/any elite/above average lefty bats since Barry, the best being a switch hitting Sandoval.

The major concern was the this wind tunnel created in the outfield and SF closed that up in like 2019/2020, then had the league’s best offense in 2021.

Though, I think not doing everything to keep Donnie Ecker here was the biggest Farhan mistake. JD Davis would be a .270/20HR guy with Ecker.

no businesses have closed downtown? Yeah, it’s healthy and business is good down there this Christmas season. A simple Google search gives you a list. “AT&T, Banana Republic and First Republic have closed in the past months. Starbucks, Target and CVS closed stores in downtown in October. In August, Westfield gave up its San Francisco mall to lenders after Nordstrom announced its departure, which left the mall only 55% leased.” – sounds like paradise

Why do you think they’d close if it all roses and chocolates down there?

Just an outsiders view, but Giants need to pick up the pace with the rest of the division. LA, SD, and AZ all have young studs…and plenty of FA’s added too. I hope SF gets it right-ed. Free agents alone aren’t gonna solve it, I think you’re right. They need a big trade like for Luis Robert Jr or something.

Yes it is. I live outside the city and used to visit regularly spent lots of money there, never again, the junkies around the stadium are aggressive the parking is ridiculous and it smells and is filthy. I go down to San Diego for work and while the gas lamp has its issues it’s perfectly fine to take my wife and kids to a ball game at petco or a nice meal, I catch the Giants there or at Chavez latrine but won’t go near SF or Oakland anymore. Smartest thing the 49ers did was build
Levi’s in Santa Clara and most folks who have kids from Dublin to Sacramento agree with me.

Not a clever name — I have not had that experience, EXCEPT the parking which is something the Giants must fix. They took the parking lots over the Lefty O’Doul bridge and turned them into another cash cow for the owners, but left the fans without a choice.

If they want fans from Marin and north and the East Bay and south, they better start making space for their cars.

I live in Seoul, which is a modern, clean city. My neighborhood in particular is quite ritzy, however, there is a human poop on the sidewalk quite frequently.
I blame this lack of basic manners on the poor baseball we are forced to consume here. The Dusan Bears are worse than AAA, but the cheerleaders and cheap beer often fool us into thinking we’re getting top baseball action.
There’s probably a correlation with SF. The Giants are the douchiest team in the league. The citizens of the town are probably railling up on ron-ron and duecing on the street in some form of stress release, anger expression, protest.

Pete, having traded ONeill, do you think StL could still trade Edman. I like that you didn’t mention Bellinger. Plus I don’t think he’d want to play in Oracle. I also believe a 2nd starter is needed. Montgomery might not go to Rangers. And do you think Woodruff is worth the risk?

claude raymond — Woodruff won’t pitch in’ 24, so while the Giants might sign and stash him for ’25,he’s not a current solution. Montgomery is a gem but only if Yamamoto goes elsewhere. Giants have the Young arms Cardinals need. C’mon Gibson and Lynn are #5s. They only have Gray. Carlson plays CF. Edman plays SS for SF. A match made in heaven 🙂

Lincecum had a violent motion and was never gonna be a long lasting flamethrower. Yamamoto has about the easiest delivery I can think of, including a barely there leg kick with three plus pitches that come out of the same 3:4ish slot which is about the easiest on the arm slot to come from unless you’re coming underhanded fastpitch style.

How much does SF have to overpay to sign Yamamoto? Going to Frisco and teaming up with Webb might sound good in practice but in reality probably plays out like Trout and Ohtani. Years of losing and playing runner up.

which underlying numbers are you referring to? offensively the giants were piss after the first 1/3 of the year and there is nothing underlying about that – pitching on the other hand had much better underlying numbers and good results. I don’t think there is anything mystifying about what happened last year – the offense died and never recovered and the clubhouse was a mess –

We’ll see. I don’t think Cohen will substantively outbid the Yanks unless he goes to $400M or something. I think the Yanks will stop just short of Cole’s figure, because it would be a very shortsighted move for the Yankees to disrespect Cole like that. But if Cohen goes to $400M and the Yanks bow out at $350, I can’t really complain.

Cole signed his deal 4 years ago being the highest paid pitcher ever so do you think Yankees give a rats ass about Cole’s feelings? Ohtani just got $700 million almost double than Judge. Is Ohtani better than Judge? I dont think so other than he is a pitcher too but offensively I think Judge is the better player with superior defense. Judge going to be very disappointed cause Soto going to destroy Judges 9/360 and end up close to $550-600 million over 14 yrs when all said and done

Maybe I’m wrong. I just figured that was a reasonable cutoff point for the Yanks, whereas Cohen is so hopelessly desperate that he’ll pay any amount, no matter how embarrassing. Having said that, I do feel that the Yanks take Cole’s feelings into consideration, more so than they do any player besides Judge. To be transparent here: I’m just guessing.

Dodgers just put a dagger into the Giants efforts to sign Yamamoto with Ohtani’s signing & deferral. All the Dodgers have to do is have Ohtani sit in during their meeting with Yamamoto.

How can the Giants (or other interested teams) compete against the Dodgers with this disadvantage facing them?

Only option is offer enormous $$$ more than any team; including the Dodgers Yankees & Mets. Anything less & it will a repeat of Ohtani.

The only way to safe this franchise or at least start building a winning and appealing culture again in my opinion, sign Yamamoto, Snell or Montgomery btw they should’ve signed Gray. Lourdes Gurriel is a solid underrated player. Sign J.D Martinez for a year, trade away Yastrzemski, Flores, Bart and Haniger for prospects, trade for Trout now is the best time to do it, let the current prospects develop this year if they don’t pan out trade away next season and sign a couple more players and they got the money so. The most important part, They have to make a much better job in the draft aside from this year which is okay and Harrison and Whisenhunt the rest has not been good let’s be honest. Go Giants

Hopefully the Dodgers get him, Snell, Hader and Bellinger!

The Giants didn’t miss out on any of those players mentioned. We have been in the running for all the top free agents the last 2 off seasons and have been the 2nd or 3rd choice for them. That goes against you clowns arguments that “nobody wants to play in SF”, and that “the Giants have a losing culture”.
