Yankees Acquire Alex Verdugo

By Anthony Franco | December 5, 2023 at 9:34pm CDT

The Yankees and Red Sox have lined up on a rare major trade. The teams announced a deal sending outfielder Alex Verdugo to the Bronx for reliever Greg Weissert and minor league pitchers Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice.

Verdugo, who turns 28 in May, has spent the past four seasons in Boston. The Sox acquired him from the Dodgers as the key piece of the Mookie Betts trade return. The left-handed hitting outfielder never quite lived up to that lofty billing. Verdugo has settled in as a solid regular without emerging as an impact player on either side of the ball.

Over his time with the Red Sox, Verdugo hit .281/.338/.424 in a little more than 2000 plate appearances. His strongest season was the shortened 2020 campaign. After posting a .308/.367/.478 slash, he has hit at a league average level for three years running. Verdugo owns a .277/.334/.417 mark since the start of 2021. This past season’s .264/.324/.421 line over 602 plate appearances fit that recent body of work.

Verdugo doesn’t have prototypical home run power for a corner outfielder. He has hit between 11 and 13 longballs in each of the last three years. Verdugo has topped 30 doubles in each season, however. He has always had excellent bat-to-ball skills and generally shows an all-fields approach. Aside from a 15-game debut showing in 2017, he has hit .260 or better in every year of his big league career.

Bringing in a hit-over-power lefty bat seems a deliberate effort by the New York front office to add balance to the lineup. The Yankees have skewed right-handed and leaned heavily on power hitters in recent years. They’ve found themselves generally lacking in consistent offensive production beyond Aaron Judge and, to a lesser extent, Gleyber Torres.

Verdugo isn’t an impact lineup presence, but he checks a box which general manager Brian Cashman had identified as a priority. Cashman expressed a desire for two outfielders to join Judge, preferably ones who hit from the left side. Top center field prospect Jasson Domínguez will be out into the middle of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, while left field has been a significant problem for the past couple years. 22-year-old Everson Pereira might be a longer-term solution there but limped to a .151/.233/.194 line in his first month as a big leaguer.

The desire for multiple outfield additions still leaves the Yankees very much in play for bigger stars. New York has been tied to Juan Soto in trade rumors and Cody Bellinger on the free agent market. Various reporters (including Andy Martino of SNY) unsurprisingly relay that the Yankees are still involved on Soto. Talks between the Yankees and Padres reportedly slowed over the weekend after San Diego demanded a pitching-heavy return built around Michael King and prospect Drew Thorpe.

Verdugo won’t take them out of that mix (or presumably impact a run at Bellinger if they can’t line up on a Soto deal). However, it could require the Yankees to lean on Judge in center field for a season if they were to acquire Soto. Verdugo hasn’t played center field since 2021. He has generally received solid marks for his glove in right field. Verdugo has one of the game’s better arms, although his speed and overall range are closer to average.

The outfield alignment is to be determined based on future moves. Verdugo steps in a short-term acquisition who’ll solidify one position while buying time for Domínguez to rehab and Pereira to see more action in Triple-A. The veteran outfielder is a year away from free agency. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz forecasts him for a $9.2MM salary in his final season of arbitration.

That pushes the Yankees’ projected spending to roughly $246MM, as calculated by Roster Resource. Their luxury tax number sits right at the $257MM line that marks the second tier of penalization. Since they’re paying the CBT for what’d be a third consecutive season, the Yankees are taxed at a 50% rate on spending between $237MM and $257MM. That’ll push their overall tab on Verdugo into the $14MM range, while they’re sure to continue adding to the roster (with accompanying higher penalties beyond the $257MM mark).

On the other side of the equation, Boston offloads Verdugo’s salary projection. They’re moving on from a player who, while reasonably effective, had a somewhat disappointing overall run at Fenway Park. In addition to the leveling off in his performance, Verdugo occasionally came under fire with the organization for perceived effort questions.

Beyond that, it’s not uncommon for an incoming baseball operations leader to reshape a roster. This is the first significant trade of Craig Breslow’s tenure as chief baseball officer. It leaves a vacancy in right field, where the Sox seem likely to look to free agency or the trade market. Boston has left-handed hitting Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida in the outfield mix, so the pursuit of a righty bat might make the most sense.

They’ll also add controllable pitching help, with Weissert standing as the most immediate upgrade. The 28-year-old righty has pitched at the MLB level in each of the past two seasons. Weissert has worked 31 1/3 innings, allowing a 4.60 ERA. His underlying numbers are more intriguing. The Fordham product has averaged around 94 MPH on his sinker and four-seam fastball. He has struck out a solid 24.4% of batters faced while keeping the ball on the ground at a 47.3% clip.

Weissert also had an excellent year in Triple-A in 2023. Over 40 1/3 frames, he pitched to a 2.90 ERA while punching out more than 34% of batters faced. Control has been an issue throughout his career, but Weissert has consistently shown the ability to miss bats in the minors. He still has two option years remaining and won’t reach arbitration for three seasons, making him an affordable and flexible bullpen piece.

Fitts, who turns 24 in a few weeks, is the more intriguing of the minor leaguers involved. An Auburn product, he was drafted in the sixth round in 2021. The 6’3″ righty had an impressive year at Double-A Somerset, working to a 3.48 ERA across 152 2/3 innings. He punched out nearly 26% of batters faced against a tidy 6.8% walk percentage. Prospect evaluators praise Fitts’s slider and overall command, projecting him as a potential back-end starter. Boston doesn’t need to add him to the 40-man roster until next offseason to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft, but it’s possible he pitches his way into the MLB rotation mix at some point during the summer.

Judice was an eighth-round pick this year out of UL-Monroe. The 6’8″ hurler had posted a 3.74 ERA over 53 innings in his draft year. BA’s draft report praised his potential plus slider and mid-90s velocity. Judice projects as a reliever and is a low minors development flier.

Big picture I actually kinda like this move.

Verdugo is…. Verdugo. He’s a 1 year rental, who is a solid, but not spectacular player. He may improve some by motivation in his walk year, and he may benefit from the outfield wall dimensions.

But he was never, repeat, NEVER, going to be extended by Breslow.

Fitts has potential, and, 2025 is the year we should be really circling on the calendar with how bloom left the roster. Fitts may be ready by sometime 2025 to give things a shot.

And again, it’s Verdugo. Keep things in perspective when thinking about returns.

First of many moves to come for both sides. Does AV interest the Padres more than what the Yankees offered so far for Soto? Will Boston trade another lefty outfielder to better balance out the offense?

          =======================
I think that is spot-on correct. And a swap, of some sort, involving Verdugo & Grisham, is a great fit both ways.

GASox – We all expected Dugie to be traded so not a shocker. The question is whether the Sox trade any of the prospects they got from the Yankees, way too soon to figure out Breslow’s master plan.

Fever, I dont see these prospects as flip fodder this offseason.

MUCH more likely they view it as next level depth that makes trading from existing MLB arms more palatable.

Fitts makes it easier to trade say, Houck, or Crawford, someone of that group of control/talent level as part ofna package to address other needs. Bello is probably a notch to stay put, and, while I’m tempted to add Whitlock to the tradable group his contract has me leaning towards him staying put as well, maybe going back to the pen if you moved the likes of Jansen while the selling is good if you don’t reel in ‘moto.

Goku, Sox fans don’t want to hear it but this feels like a Bloom early move (after the Betts deal). Pavetta worked out in the deal with Philly and any one of the return guys could ultimately have more value than one year of AV. Moreover, it gives more depth for future trades.

Personally I feel like Fitts alone is a borderline overpay for a rental guy who is a perennial 2 WAR player, but whatever.

All in – Agree 100%! One year of Verdugo for controllable pitching is exactly what the Red Sox need. One year of Verdugo was never going to get a decent MLB rotation piece, so what they got is more than what I expected.

Abreu has more power than Verdugo and needs to play as well as Duran. The Red Sox now need to re-sign Duvall.

but let me guess, you’d trade 4 pitchers (Schmidt, King, Hampton & Thorpe) who are BETTER than Fitts for a perennial 6 WAR player like Soto? whatever. at least Verdugo will HELP our OF defense, not burden it, and Yankee Stadium will help his warning track power numbers more than Soto who hits the ball out of every ballpark anyway. think of how many balls he hit for outs in RF at Fenway that will make it to the short porch.

Soto is a generational talent so it might be worth it but I don’t think I’d trade that package for him, nor do I think they’ll get that package. As good as he is, he’s a rental as well.
I’d do one of Schmidt/King, and one of Hampton/Thorpe, and a few other guys around Fitts’ level. But no way are they getting all 4.

Josh – Agreed, There are very few top 10 prospects in my minor league system I would trade for a one year rental unless the player was the last piece in winning a World Series for Seattle, Colorado, Tampa, Milwaukee, or SanDiego (whose owner wanted a WS before he died). All these teams have never won a WS. One year of any rental, in any other situation is not worth it. Cost controlled controllable players have such a huge value now, it is hard to trade for a rental.

Yeah, generational hitter, so what? I don’t care if he’s not a great defender (although his marks in 2019 and 2021 weren’t bad). Not when you are the active leader in On Base Percentage percentage and have had what, 4 top 10 MVP finishes before the age of 25? Come on now. Those types of players aren’t exactly made available every day.

He’s a left fielder though, not a shortstop, his defense isn’t a huge concern.

I agree to an extent, although I wouldn’t go that far. I think a top 10 guy should be made available for any player you think will add good value to a playoff push. Or at least considered.

Fo a guy like Soto, absolutely. A guy like Verdugo? No way. They could’ve removed Fitts from the deal and that’s about what I would have expected the return to be. Including Fitts’ is a huge overpay.

Nothing for Stanton except a truck load of money and cap space. Whether it is bad trades or FA signings, the Yankees have appeared in 1 WS since 2003. Cashman is not effective unless he is spending $100 million more than anyone else!

his first 3 rings he got as GM were because he traded for Knoblauch (& signed El Duque), traded for Clemens & traded for Justice… the $100 million more than anyone else happened because Hank went out on his own over Cashman’s head and re-signed A-Rod

I wonder if they just wanted to stinkbomb the Yankees clubhouse lol. I mean, what controversy is gonna come first. Will he fight w/ judge over the number 99.? Will he fight him about playing right field? Will he refuse to cut his facial hair? Will he continue to rock Mr. T style gold chains? Will he demand to make the all star team out of spring training? I actually prefer this return over Gleyber.

Different teams can cover a guys weaknesses different ways. Boston CANNOT cover for Gleyber’s shortcomings as a poor defender. The infield is in terrible shape already, what with the butchery by Devers and how Casas has graded out so far. I couldn’t imagine adding Gleyber into that mix when he wouldn’t have any real help to speak of regardless of whether you slotted him as a 2B or back to SS.

In 2023, gleyber logged a bit over 1200 innings at 2B.

          How did he do, using only time at 2B??? -4 DRS. -2.2 UZR/-2.1 UZR150. -3 OAA -3 RAA. -1.5DPR. -1.4 ErrR.

It’s rare that all these metrics turn out negative across the board on a guy, usually in at least one facet they post a positive rating.

He’s a below average defensively 2B as well as SS. You want to claim his BAT profiles as average or better at 2B? OK. But his defense remains a liability.

Payroll. If you add King, and use the $24M difference to sign Snell, for example, you have filled two rotation slots. That value will be higher than the difference between Soto & Verdugo.

Thanks to the health crisis Boston won that trade easily. 2 months of Mookie and zero attendance ouch. Them paying a good chunk of Price was worth it. You had Alex for 3 full seasons and will now have these pitchers.

Think of it from breslows perspective s few years down the line. Verdugo goes to San Diego for Soto, he crushes it in New York and signs long term. Breslow will have to live with his first move making the Yankees a power house. I hope verdugo just stays in New York and sucks like usual

          1) Verdugo would be a very small piece in a deal for Soto.
          2) Soto has to be signed long-term after that.

No one is going to look back (excluding you) and say yep Verdugo going to Padres is the only reason the Yankees got Soto long-term.

Yankees top 15 maybe even top 10 prospect. Any Pirates equivalent I wouldn’t give for Verdugo. Kennedy Mueth Ashcraft area. And they got a potential solid mlb ready reliever and a recent decent reliever draft pick.

Who’s Verdugo going to be better than enough to justify paying this? Reynolds Suwinski don’t think so. Healthy Cutch nope. Conner Joe? Not against lhp. Even rhp I am fine with Joe and keeping my prospects. Hopefully Davis can be at least a 750 ops guy.

One year of Betts $27,000,000 and the Dodgers paid $46,000,000 of David Price’s contract meant the Red Sox did not need to get a lot in return to make the it a win.

Verdugo was average in his 4 seasons. Wong has been one of the better defensive catchers in the league. Jeter Downs was a total bust. It has not been a bad return for what ended up being a 60 game rental.

dirty617water – Nobody wrote hatred of Bloom more than me and this move is very very good for Boston.

1 – $9.2MM not being paid to the 4th or 5th best outfielder on the roster
2 – Yankees, our favorite team, gets to be the sucker in this deal
3 – The money now needs to be directed to things we need

Also, the three pitchers aren’t terrible like Bloom picked em. They each have a degree of potential to help the MLB team. Time will tell but the three players are the icing on the cake. The cake is the $9.2MM we can use to get what we need. Bloom jacked up Verdugo’s salary because he was an idiot and Breslow dodged a bullet by pushing the problem to NY.

Good move unlike a Bloom move!!!

Boston has a group of cheaper players that are the equal to, or better than, Verdugo to play in the OF with only 2 slots given Yoshida is stuck in the third. (Really maybe he ought to be a FH, but, let’s see how the rest of the offseason goes first.)

Why should Verdugo be kept on the roster, especially given he a) will NEVER be worth a QO next year, and b) is a pending free agent after next year that is simply not worth extending given the pre-arb in-house options for the OF.

      So why so upset?

Don’t like Verdugo…and seems like much to pay for him. But if he can hit .280, make contact and play defense that’s better than so many of the Quad A guys they ran out there last year.

All kidding aside, a trade between my Yankees and the Red Sox shows me both organizations don’t care about anything but the bottom line. Sure, it’s “early” to say that but let’s face it, the Yankees of old would’ve already signed Ohtani, Yamamoto, and traded for Soto (eventually). Seeing all the reductions in payroll shows a lack of competitive fortitude. It’s absolutely hindsight but why didn’t the Yankees sign Harper, a lifelong Yankees fan? Manny Machado? Seager? Sure let’s extend Cashman for life…

Interesting trade. The career of Fitts will ultimately determine who wins.

I remember seeing Verdugo as a prospect at Camelback. Though his average would be higher with his quick bat.

HalosHeavenJJ – There is no need to wait to declare a big winner.

BOSTON – Got three nobodies and $9.2MM off their payroll

NEW YORK – Got a $9.2MM league average player who was a finalist for a gold glove despite not being able to play balls that are at his shoulder or higher. He’s a first half player only with a 100 OPS+ AND he’s $9.2MM did I mention that!!

BOSTON WINS TRADE HANDS DOWN with or without anything from the three guys they got.

Verdugo came with lots of promise, but never put it all together. Conner Wong is now the last player standing in the Mookie trade. On the bright side we got 2 high draft picks, 6 & 8, maybe one will pan out. That’s assuming the Yankees know how to draft!! There’s got to be a bigger plan….right !?!?!

This tells me the Yankees couldn’t make any headway with the Padres or Cardinals without having to move one of their big prospects.

This will be an interesting trade to see play out. Verdugo has been a C+. Nothing sticks out but he can hit for some average, some pop and and a decent defender. It will be interesting to see his bat play in Yankee stadium. He does have an attitude problem. I suspect management has had enough and the kids that came up showed they are ready.

This looks like open a slot for a kid, clear payroll and add organizational depth and maybe you get lucky. The Yankees get someone who is a solid defender and may be able to escalate his bat in that park and lineup. It is a question how his attitude plays.

It has been reported the Padres are looking to dump payroll. I don’t know if their owner’s death is what is leading to this reporting. Cut payroll and sell the team.

If this is true, I don’t see them taking on salary. It has been reported they are trying to move Grisham in a Soto deal with the Yankees to move that contract.

Cashman doesn’t like to move the top guys. Every time I hear a Cole Castillo etc to Yankees I am skeptical of it happening. Soto isn’t a arm and only 1 expensive year so better chance than most big names but still should take something.

B for Boston. Solid return. Couldn’t have done much better. Potential starter. 2 promising enough relievers. I would have done this one for sure. Plenty of time to get another corner outfielder.

C for NY City. No bargain but not a overpay at least not much.

    Good fair win win trade.

RedStockings – Stop for one minute and think about it. What happens if he is non-tendered? The Red Sox lose $9.2MM off their payroll and can use it somewhere else.

Now think about this deal. If the three prospects suck and never make a positive contribution to the MLB team is it any different than a non-tender?

I was the person suggesting it because I didn’t believe their was a GM dumb enough to pay Verdugo $9.2MM other than Bloom so you non-tender him to free up the money to use more effectively.

Instead, Breslow must have known he had a sucker in Cashman and effectively non-tendered him to the Yankees and the bonus is three prospects that don’t have to be contributors for this to be a good deal.

Now Breslow needs to take the $9.2MM Bloom was going to waste and use it effectively somewhere we need help like money for Yamamoto or a 3B or a 2B or a lefty relievers.

Guys like fillhok are clueless. They really don’t get how this all works. This was Breslow’s way of non-tendering Verdugo but getting 3 potential pieces that could be icing on the cake if they ever help the MLB team. If they don’t, then it’s the same as a non-tender.

All that mattered was the $9.2MM was no longer on the books.

        “If the three prospects suck”
What “if” all three end up in the HOF.

Now that we’ve gotten the silly future assumptions out of the way:
        ————————–
Fitts is a legit starting pitcher prospect. He was 4th ranked pitching prospect in the Yankee’s system. Weissart is already in the Majors. And Nicolas Judice is a wild card.

Im assuming Breslow was brought in to find pitching and if he traded for these three, he must see something he likes in them. (Example: All three have good sliders.) The proof will be in whether or not some of these players succeed. But until players he brings in start failing we have to assume he knows his stuff.
        —————————-
Verdugo definitely had value. It would have been foolish to have waived him for nothing.

Seriously? A guy with a 100 OPS+ is a reasonable replacement for a guy with a career OPS+ of 157? I don’t think so . In fact 3 Verdugos don’t equal a Soto. If SD deals Soto to anyone else they will suffer for years just like Boston is due to the bonehead move by Bloom and ownership with regards to Mookie. It’s pure stupidity to give up a generational player like Soto. Give up five guys who don’t provide value greater than their cost to save money on the payroll, don’t give up the guy who costs the most but is returning more value than his cost. It’s a horrendous business decision.

It has also been reported they want to move Grisham in the package and his contract is similar to Verdugo’s I don’t see them swapping salaries. I think the hold up is including Grisham and the quality of prospects coming back.

Ok, I get it! Verdugo had to go. I actually always liked the guy. Way more clutch player than people give him credit for.. he had some personal problems, death in the family this year. I’m going to hold this against Cora. I can easily see him hitting 25 home runs into that short right field porch. And the way people hold it against him for this Mookie Betts trade! Crazy! For one year of Betts ( he was definitely not resigning with Boston) we got what 4 years of Verdugo, and who knows how many years of Wong catching. I don’t see how that’s a bad deal. I see Dugie costing RedSox couple games a year against Yankees. Couldn’t he have gone to any other team in baseball? Lastly, I can see a couple of these pitchers working out well for Boston, and think it’s probably a reasonably fair trade, what with the entire world knowing Cora wanted Dugie gone. Well AC, you better pull the right strings this year or you are next!

The prospect lists won’t love him, but he is absolutely a MLB pitcher, although could be a half a season or more away. Saw him pitch in Hudson Valley and he convinced me the pitch clock was a good thing. He has command and is a bulldog. Weissert has some nasty movement on his pitches and can slot right into the Sox’s pen. I know nothing about Judice, though. That concerns me! Deal could work out for both teams.

          A) Yankees farm has little to zero talent.

          B) MLB forced a trade from a perceived small market to a large market

          C) Preller will have sold the Padres out

          D) Padres will now set themselves back years

Do I hate the Yankees? NO.

Way to go Breslow! That counts as a huge win even if the 3 SPs don’t amount to anything because it’s $9.2MM off the books. When I said they needed to non-tender him I couldn’t picture a team that would be so stupid to grab him and his $9.2MM salary but alas I under estimated how incredibly stupid Cashman is!!! WOW.

Fitts is a nice add that could develop into a MLB SP. His AA numbers in 2023 were nice because his H/9 were excellent and his control was solid so he put up a 3.48 ERA and 1.14 WHIP at age 23 in AA. That’s a good sign for the future.

Weissert has potential in that his data is good except for 2023. He’s a reliever with control issues and that might be something Boston can fix. We’ll see. He’s not terrible like many of the Bloom pick-ups.

Judice is a complete unknown to most people but I’m guessing Breslow has information on him to include him in the deal. He’s 6’8″ and 230 lbs and is a right handed starter from the University of Lousiana Monroe.

Three arms is a good thing. If one ends up contributing and the team has $9.2MM more to go after Yamamoto, GREAT!!!

Taking advantage of Cashman this early in your tenure is AWESOME!!!!!

Fitts’ middle name is Logan. Like the airport.

    Breslow: How cute. Sold!

As a Boston Fan, I may be an outlier but I didn’t want to see Verdugo go. He hits for average and has solid defense in the outfield. By far our best defensive player out there. This team was absolutely putrid on defense last year. I understand wanting controllable pitching, but they have to upgrade on defense, not ship out one of their only good defensive players.

What we have here is a clear cut case of “Fitts Law” in order to guage the success or failure of this Trade for The Boston Redsox.

Missed this yesterday as I stopped looking after work lol, but as a NYY fan I don’t hate it. Verdugo may be better suited for Yankee Stadium and as a rental, I’d rather give up these pitchers than what it would take to get Soto. (I think Soto is overrated for the cost/rental) I want them to focus on Bellinger more anyway. Give up the money, not the talent for the splash move.

This is Boston sending in a spy and potential wrecking ball to dismantle (mickey) anything the yankees want to do next year! It’s high level espionage!

We got a loaded outfield. Yoshida had a pretty good rookie year in left (I know defensively he sucks). Duran should be the everyday CF he has the range to help Yoshida. Here’s the interesting move, do they put Abreu in RF so they can move Raffela to 2B? I like the return for Verdugo, a MLB ready reliever, a starting rotation depth piece, and a flier….That’s pretty good for a player with motivation problems.

‘Richard Fitts’ is getting tired of all the childish name puns. He announced he’s going to change his name to put it end to it. From now on, he wants to be known as “Richard Hertz”.
